As someone living in Japan ...

    by takapa

... the truth is that the vast majority of Japanese love dolphins and would never think of killing or being party to the killing of one.

There are plenty of aquariums here and lots of fluffy dolphin toys, the slaughter and eating of dolphins is just covered up by the government (the one town acts in isolation but the government does not allow anyone to interfere). There was a documentory on it in the UK a few years back I recall.

I have never met a single Japanese person that was aware of the Taiji slaughter and most thought I was making it up - until I showed them the evidence. Not that its a hobby-horse, just that the media here is hardly balanced and this particular shame of Japan is never given any coverage.

Looking forward to seeing the ep. Looks to be quality political satire with a worthwhile message.

    Watching South Park is suspenseful

    by chakraborty

It's a 22 minute build up to a punchline at the end...and the suspense is whether or not the punchline will deliver or not, letting us know if those 22 minutes were wasted or worthwhile.

Will be interesting Matt and Trey's take on this

    by miyamoto_musashi

Will they just go for the easy kill, i.e Japanese are bad, or go for the tougher one, i.e. that we the West kill and eat animals that are sacred to others (cows), dirty to others (pigs), or that we have cheap meat because of our treatment of farm animals.
Or just go crazy and take on vegeterians with some new scientific discovery that plants feel pain.

Given Trey's background, I'm looking forward to this.

    by fracturedlojak

IIRC Trey knows a fair bit about Japan and Japanese culture, so I'm not concerned about ignorance or stereotypes -- not that I usually find such things in South Park.

Oh, for the record, it took a second viewing of last week's episode to catch the newspaper headline about the Balloon Boy. It was a nice touch, particularly given many Talkbalker's assumptions that BB would figure prominently. My only problem was that it took a second viewing for me to catch it, thus I experienced a brief period of malaise.

    The Cove

    by spursfanjd

was a very powerful movie that hopefully will help with the terrible things that are going on in Taji. Hopefully Trey and Matt are not comparing Americans eating livestock to the Japanese eating whales. If you saw the Cove you learned that the problem with the Dolphin slaughter is that Dolphins and whales are highly intelligent animals that should not be murdered, captured or eaten.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Where is the delineation between "intelligent enough to not be murdered, captured, or eaten" and "dumb enough to be murdered, captured, and eaten"? Is it on an IQ scale? Is it based upon possible IQ? What effect does this debate have on the abortion debate? Can a fetus be killed because it's not "highly intelligent" yet? Also, are dolphins capable of rational choices the way humans are? If so, I missed that day in science class, because I thought what made humans unique was our ability to reason.

i have to agree with jayemel

    by toe jam

why should there be a hierarchy for animals? if you oppose the killing/eating of any one species, you should oppose the same for all of them. eating livestock SHOULD be compared to the killing of dolphins and whales. why is the former okay and the latter not? if anything, the methods by which livestock in the united states is produced and sold is many times more inhumane than a dolphin or whale kill. that's not to say i approve of either. i just don't think there should be any differentiation. disclaimer: i still eat meat occasionally, but am easing into vegetarianism.

    by iinventedlove

So dolphins who for the most part live free lives until they are rounded into an admittedly brutal murder circle shouldnt be allowed...But cows and pigs that live their entire lives in their own shit, eating crap they're not supposed to, generally hating their lives and living in the darkness before they are all thrown into some giant murder machine IS TOTALLY FINE, because dolphins are slightly more intelligent? Sure I dont like the idea of dolphins beind murdered but its part of a bigger question of killing animals in geneneral. The Japanese Government is right when they say this whole movement against this is purely emotional. Is shit eating Hayden Panetteire even a frikkin vegan or does she only protect the cute animals?

Interesting post. It remind's of a quote from Blood Meridian :"A man's at odds to know his mind cause his mind is aught he has to know it with:. We can not truly understand another creature's mind (or ability to reason) when we barely have the ability to know our own minds.

You think any native Japanese would lose face to a "foreigner" and admit that crap in front of you? If you go by what native Japanese feign ignorance about: Nanjing never happened, they never tortured US POWs, their government never sexually slaved women, and Japanese fascism never existed. They know about that crap, even your Japanese friends will simply never acknowledge that stuff to an American any more than your Israeli friends are going to admit there's apartheid in the West Bank. Denying it is just the polite Japanese way to tell you to STFU about it and not talk about it without insulting you. lol dude dense American.

Finally. It's been awhile, but I thought was episode was actually funny. And it had a completely hilarious and ridiculous twist. The last 5 minutes were great. Also, it was fucking ballsy. All that serious stuff about Hiroshima was both very sad, and yet made the reveal of Whale and Dolphin flying the Enola Gay that much more funny. That was really, really good. And the last line was perfect.

    by zam1138

When they single out one person (or a group) and then proceed to call them on their shit, like when they began calling Paul Watson a hippy pussy. It feels like the show "pauses", and it's just Matt and Trey who take over and rip them a new one. They did it with the steroid-abusing baseball players, OJ Simpson, The Ramseys, Gary Condit. (just to name a few) Just laugh out loud funny. Wish I had a platform to do that with. (It also helps that its not gratuitous, and not being mean for the fun of it. It's thought out and basically what we all wish was really being said)
