What is Butt-Numb-A-Thon?
Hey folks, Harry here and this is something that a BNAT attendee, a long timer... Pam Nail put together to explain BUTT-NUMB-A-THON in its cinematic terms. And it made me a little misty eyed, I have to say - cuz I'm proud of the programming I've done. Whether it be the greatest of modern film to the absolute funkiest of the funky or the shocking horrific realization or the politically incorrect. The in-jokes and personality of the fest. The quirks and my private fetishes... some of which are of the most childlike wonder as well as perverse and strange. I love Butt-Numb-A-Thon. It isn't easy.
I'm in the midst of programming this year and I'm working to steer away from a mass of clips, back to full on features with limited presentations. But even now I'm pouring over lists of films. Will there be a western, a musical, a porn, an animated film, a cartoon, a 3D film, a silent film, a horror film, etc, etc, etc... It's fun putting these together. Matching modern with vintage, mainstream with subversive cult, horror with Academy Award winners and AFI films. It is all of that and more.
For me, BUTT-NUMB-A-THON is my personal expression of my love of cinema. The possibilities, the passion, the laughter and the communal experience of it all. It is watching New films with the same reverence as the classics and at the same time cherishing the bizarre. Watching all the clips strung together is just a touch of what BNAT is - because honestly, Butt-Numb-A-Thon is nothing without the people that love it. The attendee. As the various applications have come in. I delight at y'all's imagination. It truly is amazing. The response has been pretty incredible and I hope you folks end up getting in.
As for me. The second Halloween in over, I really shift into overdrive for BNAT programming. Watching this just shows me, I got a lot to live up to.
Just 2 more days to apply at BUTT-NUMB-A-THON Application Page! Then look for the November 1st List Announcement!

Cool video... although the pics/video of the actual event at the start is from the downtown location 2 years ago and not this previous year at the Alamo South Lamar...South Lamar is a nicer facility but doesn't have the class of the downtown theater. Which I guess is the point.
-
nicely done!
-
nicely done!
-
There are outside and waiting line pictures from all three locations, though the only in-theater ones are from the year it was at the Ritz. That's mostly due to the "no electronics" rule.
-
i thought the Raider's March music at the end was a nice fit for your credits. That and I just love that song. I have it on my mp3 player too.
-
I feel nothing but pity for you.
-
Can't beat that. I love BNAT. Thanks for posting this, Harry.
-
Great clips and music! Hope I can attend this year!
-
I seriously need to send in my application tomorrow. I've been waiting for time off from work to do it with my best friend, we'll be going together (one can hope).
-
I almost forgot the explicit, deeply unsettling antics of our favorite horse-on-bird pornography! Now if only that video was still online...

It's a lot of clips of new movies with showings of movies
by lockesbrokenleg
you never heard of basically.
-
Most of the new movies on that vid we saw as the whole things, not just as clips. The ones that were clips were - Watchmen, Up, ... I think that's it. Monsters vs. Aliens, the newest Terminator and the most recent Rambo were also just clips when we got 'em, but usually? It's the whole movie.
-
Those clips make me want to go so bad. I just submitted my application earlier tonight. My friend is busting his ass to make another deadline and won't get his in until the last minute. Go, Rob! Go! Make it happen! Hopefully, maybe, we'll be lucky this year.

Maybe my enthusiam just bubbled over.
-
Avatar? Iron Man 2? Tron 2?
-
Amazing job, Pam. Thank you so much for posting and I saw myself and my sister in the video. Yay! I'm sitting down in the Ritz theater with my sister. Very cool news, indeed, Harry.
-
I'm not getting my hopes up about Avatar. Harry/AICN & 20th aren't huge fans of each other and I can't find a 20th 'upcoming'/'new' movie that has screened at a BNAT on the list on WikipediaClips of Iron Man 2 are possible (I guess) but the complete film is a stretch. Iron Man is a FX-heavy productionIt will be interesting to see if The Lovely Bones shows up seeing as it is being released that weekendPixar will probably show up again. It was cool when they brought in Up unfinished. I'm sure it's nice having a completed product to show to people but the geeky side of me was much more entertained by seeing in a more extended sense how exactly Pixar goes about making their films.
-
Seeing that two second clip scared me all over again. Nothing like a slow-moving, four-hour historical epic at the end of a 24 hour movie marathon. Harry, you sadistic bastard!
-
Seriously, man, I teared up.
-
Jealous, as always, of you lucky bastards that get to go to this.
-
Maybe I will get in this year and experience it for myself!
-
awesome video--actually started laughing out loud during end credit music...mornin
-
Greatest combination ever. Something tells me Pam is getting in this year.
-
Wow, the memories... That brought chills AND a tear. I'm getting sentimental in my old age.
-
I thought she did a GREAT job on it. I posted the link on my FB last night, and even sent it to a few peeps on the ol' Twit. I was practically yellin' the titles out to my BF as they came up I was so excited. It makes me all the more anxious and hopeful I'll be able to come this year to see more of the awesome. And, Smallerdemon's done a few retrospectives as well, covering individual BNATs.
-
Fag!
-
That was fantastic and makes me very, very sad about not applying this year. :-(

I would have loved to hear the audio for each clip over the music. Is there a master list of BNAT movies anywhere?
-
Am I the only one in the world who thought the one of the only redeeming things about IJ:KOTCS WAS the whole fridge gag? I feel It's one of the only true-to-the-old-Indy moments in that film, and besides: it's just as outrageous as most of Indy's other awesome stunts (being dragged behind an army truck, jumping out of a plane with a rubber dinghy, surviving a tank ride off the edge of the most hugest cliff in the world and somehow getting your hat back too...)
-
Someone break out the ban hammer...
-
check the Yo Olde Wikipedia for info. It's got a filmography. And if you IMDB some of the films, it lists that the premier for more then a few of them was at BNAT. Seeing the clip from OLDBOY made me mad all over again that I loaned it to someone and I don't remember who it was. If it's you, please give it back, it's a great frakkin' film.
-
Same shit happened to me. Infernal Affairs, too.
-
I love comps like that. Nice to see some love for BLACK SNAKE MOAN, but has anyone even sat through UNFORTUNATE EVENTS?
-
...that Unfortunate Events was at BNAT... tho at the time I called peeps after the screening to tell them I'd seen it. The books were better, though repetitive as hell.
-
got banned for a rampant case of retardation!
-
Economy and my lack of employment won't allow it. Maybe for Butt-Numb-A-Thon 12...
-
I have some on my Original Alamo memories site. tinyurl.com/yljopdt
Those are from BNAT3.

Hey Harry, you should throw the trailer for the film I'm currently shooting in the mix. It's not a theater experience without some trailers man! http://tinyurl.com/yjrcslo (voice over will be different by the time BNAT comes around)
-
Thanks. It looks like the folks in the last 2 years really got a treat.
-
Every year I see this and every year I'm disappointed for about 3 or 4 days. I'm a med student, there's no way I'd be able to get away to do this. Looks really fun.

I thought you guys got together and put ice on your butts
by cherryvalance
This makes more sense.
-
Well, unfortunately, we can't all go, so maybe I'll watch all those movies in my home with my missus :-)
I didn't recognize some of them though, so can someone list them ( in order if you like ? ) -
As mentioned above, there's a link to the complete list of the films on the BNAT Wikipedia page, as well as the BNAT website. Or, you know, you could stick around for the credit crawl at the end of the video, which lists all the movies the clips were taken from, in the order they appeared.
-
Abso-fucking-lutely nothing if you don't live in Texas, so how about you stop talking about it 5 times a day? Thanks.
-
Butt-NomNomNom-a-Thon
-
Only about half the attendees are from Texas, the rest are from all over the world.
-
The rest are from all over the world, my arse!
-
There is a group of folks from Minnesota that have gone BNAT II -> X (and I'm assuming Harry isn't going to turn them away this year.) Over the past 2 years in the limited mingling I have done I met people from California, New York, Canada, Minnesota and a few other states/countries. I believe I met folks from the UK or Australia there. It is NOT just a Texas thing
-
I've met folks from New Zealand, Poland, Norway, Scotland...
-
The Northlander's come from there for 2 years now. And I have been fortunate enough to come from Atlanta. A nice guy from Seattle whom I gave vegan cookies to mailed me (post BNAT) Lady Vengeance and The Grifters (both brand new, no less) to say thanks. And, for those who are interested I've organized a few BNAT gift exchanges (like a secret santa) for people to exchange before the film fest begins. Just 'cause we don't get to live in Austin doesn't mean we don't want to meet strangers and sit in the dark with them! And get to know fellow cenephiles as well.
-
I made the trip from England for BNAT 10. Unfortunately now I'm poor so a mad cinema infused six days in Texas, is somewhat out of the question...
-
The largest collection of virgins in one room.
-
Made the trip last year and I hope to
make it again this year. Where is the best bbq in Austin. How do I get in on the gift exchange lark. -
is usually put together by Grendy on the LiveJournal community ("bnatters"). If you don't have an account there, you can still see the posts and there should still be a way to put your name in the hat.
-
I wondered what happened to you after last year! Pls find me there on the LJ group. or on the facebook or the myspace groups.
And Stubbs' was pretty good, tho I am sure other local peeps will have other ideas. When I went to Stubbs' in '07, I had lunch with England, Panama and Sweden... it was like a UN meeting. Later we went to the airport to pick up France that night. Yay for International BNAT peoples!
-
I asked the LiveJournal BNATters crew to start giving up their vital geographical statistics. http://tinyurl.com/y9ec92l

Best BBQ in Austin? Stubs seem to be on the top of the list. Does the Alamo do BBQ on teh menu?
-
Stubbs has some fine ribs. Last year I went to this other place that I can't really remember the name of at the moment, but it was a bit outside town I believe, and got a HUGE plate with half a rack of beef ribs and half a rack of pork ribs.
They told me I wouldn't be able to finish it all, but I showed them. I've also got the photos to prove it. Yay for Texas BBQ! -
Salt Lick?
-
Is that a place? Or just an activity?
By the way, speaking of BBQ, for two years now I've wanted to go to that Texas Chainsaw house they say has been converted into a BBQ restaurant. I need to go there.
If I get the chance to revisit Austin, I have to do that. -
The Salt Lick is the best BBQ in the state. That was probably where you went.
-
The name doesn't ring a bell. I'll have to ask around. How far from Austin by car i Salt Lick?
-
thereabouts
-
How does one find out the program lineup? One more question too. Are there any seats left or Is it too late to register? Thanks.
-
Not knowing whats going to show is 1/2 the fun.
Harry posts a fake lineup and you can try and guess from that.
And BNAT is not just a local thing. I live local and I haven't managed to get in yet. Maybe this will be my lucky year! -
My favorite BBQ place in Austin is The Green Mesquite. It's just south of downtown on Barton Springs Road.
-
I hope to see you this year! I was the one that sent the DVD's to you (Grifters, Lady Vengence). I thought that it was one of the kindest things anyone has ever done, transport a vegan cookie over state lines. Again, I hope to see you again this year!

If you're willing to drive to Salt Lick, you might as well...
by chaplinatemyshoe
drive a few more miles to the city of Lockhart. There you will find the single greatest concentration of great bbq in the state of Texas. Highly recommended to out of state attendees who have an extra day to burn.

Maybe this year they'll find a good "Teen Wolf" print!
by the reluctant austinite
Every year that fucker burns up in the projector. I think the film used for prints of "Teen Wolf" must have been cheap, but I have to credit the staff of the Alamo for trying to find a better print every year.
-
Yup.

Grendy, don't forget your "White Girls Can't Mix" CDs...
by bob loblaw law blog
I've enjoyed those the last couple of years as well! :)
-
If I get in this year I will try to get in on the 9th to give me a chance to do non film related stuff.
-
Hells yeah. I have 2 ideas on where to go with that. and Nordling's making 2 discs of music from movies that played at the last 10 BNATS.
I am glad you like them. I love to make them. oohhh! I just thought of another idea now. cool. hope it comes out well. -
mmmmm best BBQ I've ever had! (but I didn't go to that farther place that was mentioned here).
-
The Austin Airport has some great restaurants.
-
Is anyone else refreshing the website every ten seconds to see if the list has been added?
-
I'm not getting anything else done.
-
Same here. I'm looking forward to the drug like high if I get in and trying to figure out how to handle the gut punch to my soul if I don't.
-
I agree...I will either being screaming like a little girl or trying to stay positive as everyone I've shared my excitement with asks me if I got in or not.
-
There is always standby.
-
...and if you're really into heart attacks, you can go to Round Rock donuts afterwards.
-
The only good Salt Lick is the one in Dripping Springs. All the other locations are pale imitations of the original.
-
Nov 02, 2009 4:26:07 PM CST
Yeah, I'm not sure they have the open pit in Round Rock...
by chaplinatemyshoe
That's sort of what sets the Driftwood location apart. If you want to stay inside city limits, a good hole in the wall joint is Sam's on E. 12th Street. Brisket is solid, but I advise staying away from the sides.
-
Thank God I'm already in Austin.
-
I has it.
-
Flames .... heaving ... heaving flames!
-
I actually went there with a buddy of mine and was shocked...its almost an exact replica of the pit they have in dripping springs...and the BBQ is pretty much identical. No need to be a BBQ snob about it. Its good BBQ and its nice that there's one closer to me now.
Honestly, if you all want great BBQ...Snow's BBQ, an hour east of Austin...amazing! Only open Saturdays and you got to get there early because they run out of food quickly....thats how good it is... -
The answer was:
Annual event, put on by Harry Knowles, that should have had a list released for it 2 days ago.
I kid, I kid. -
Seriously dude, I've worn out the refresh button.
-
It must have been a whole mess more than expected. Just a ton of work to sort through each entry.
-
---I has it. Anxious. Hope to go. Can't speak complete sentences.
Going to Star Wars Orchestra tonight, maybe the Lucas-love will help me get into BNAT1138? -
....Don't you get really nervous?
-
I had one of those dreams I swore I thought was real last night and I didn't make the BNAT list. I was actually pleasantly surprised to not see it up this morning.
-
just to see if Harry will say, "BNAT list now up here: [link]".Sometimes having Twitter and an Internet browser on your BlackBerry is NOT good for your sanity!!
-
went to bed looking, woke up and looked. dang. if this is sweeps week Harry's winning!
-
I have a really good feeling it's going to be today. Very similar to the feeling I had yesterday.
-
Oh god yes about the "Takes a second to refresh" thing. This is driving me up the frickin' wall! If I get in, I think ill probably just pass right out.
-
any little extra pause in the refreshing is an instant nervous stomach. The anticipation has made it into something even bigger than it already was for me, but I am trying to tell myself that it probably wont happen just so my balls wont hurt too bad if they are kicked in.
-
Ack! Ack! Ack! My "Refresh" button has dents from me hitting so frequently! My girlfriend keeps asking if he posted yet, so i'll calm down. Its affecting my personal life! I literally cannot remember the last time I was this anxious about something. Maybe christmas 1992. Ack!
-
Haa, exactly, same here, I think she is silently starting to become as obsessed with me as well...
-
-to be rejected.
-
I mean, we're 3 days late at this point. And its looking like we're probaby gonna hit 4 days, as its 9:23pm(EST) now. Maybe there is no BNAT 1138 at all. Maybe its all a collective dream of film fanboys everywhere...
-
have to go to bed now cos it is already Thursday for me and I'm knackered.
-
baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me, no more....
-
Might be nice to take advantage of that before it expires this afternoon. Just sayin'...
-
Day 4: Ive stopped eating. My family keeps knocking on my front door, but I cant tear myself away from the refresh button. It...calls to me....Win or lose....I just need to know....
Actually, im at work on lunch break. So none of what I just said was remotely true. Except for the needing to know. -
If over a thousand people sent in applications, how many times do you think they've refreshed the page? Hundreds? About a week of that could certainly raise a sites average of hits per year which influences how much a site charges advertisers. Something to think about.
-
As long as I make it, I'm glad to send ad dollars Harry's way.
-
A co-worker of mine entered and just won't shut up about it. I want him to find out about it so we can stop hearing about it!
I'm not saying there's some conspiracy theory. Just made me wonder -
headgeek666
Placing the final 21 attendees into my BNAT list - finally got the seat number cleared up. BNAT LIST Coming soon -
Crap, now my heart starts racing... and I have to go to a meeting in half an hour! Dammit... how am I going to concentrate...
-
I'm about to have to leave for a 45 minute drive. I feel you. Good Luck!
-
I can get AICN on my BlackBerry, but it might be kind of distracting if I'm scrolling and maximizing a tiny screen during my meeting. Good thing it's just for coffee and a quick chat about a business proposal. It'd kill me if it were some long-ass 3 hour meeting!!Good luck to you too, bobbyjoe!
-
Oh BNAT, you saucy mistress of temptation and cinema. We shall finally know 1138's chosen few. Heres hoping im among them! But, as I said, good luck to all as well.
-
lol..yeah thats pretty much buttnumbathon right there.
-
Dude, that is a kickass SN. That movie is so badass. Kudos.
-
than BNAT. Just did a numbers check, and BNAT is a 3.0% admission rate which makes Harvard applicants a little more than three times as likely to get into their school of choice...
-
That means I'll get into BNAT?
I didn't get into Harvard though. -
actually gives you more time to photoshop your submission picture and work on oh so clever application answers.
