What is Butt-Numb-A-Thon?

Published at:  Oct 28, 2009 12:05:42 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here and this is something that a BNAT attendee, a long timer... Pam Nail put together to explain BUTT-NUMB-A-THON in its cinematic terms. And it made me a little misty eyed, I have to say - cuz I'm proud of the programming I've done. Whether it be the greatest of modern film to the absolute funkiest of the funky or the shocking horrific realization or the politically incorrect. The in-jokes and personality of the fest. The quirks and my private fetishes... some of which are of the most childlike wonder as well as perverse and strange. I love Butt-Numb-A-Thon. It isn't easy.

I'm in the midst of programming this year and I'm working to steer away from a mass of clips, back to full on features with limited presentations. But even now I'm pouring over lists of films. Will there be a western, a musical, a porn, an animated film, a cartoon, a 3D film, a silent film, a horror film, etc, etc, etc... It's fun putting these together. Matching modern with vintage, mainstream with subversive cult, horror with Academy Award winners and AFI films. It is all of that and more.

For me, BUTT-NUMB-A-THON is my personal expression of my love of cinema. The possibilities, the passion, the laughter and the communal experience of it all. It is watching New films with the same reverence as the classics and at the same time cherishing the bizarre. Watching all the clips strung together is just a touch of what BNAT is - because honestly, Butt-Numb-A-Thon is nothing without the people that love it. The attendee. As the various applications have come in. I delight at y'all's imagination. It truly is amazing. The response has been pretty incredible and I hope you folks end up getting in.

As for me. The second Halloween in over, I really shift into overdrive for BNAT programming. Watching this just shows me, I got a lot to live up to.

Just 2 more days to apply at BUTT-NUMB-A-THON Application Page! Then look for the November 1st List Announcement!

Harry...

Cool video... although the pics/video of the actual event at the start is from the downtown location 2 years ago and not this previous year at the Alamo South Lamar...South Lamar is a nicer facility but doesn't have the class of the downtown theater. Which I guess is the point.

There are outside and waiting line pictures from all three locations, though the only in-theater ones are from the year it was at the Ritz. That's mostly due to the "no electronics" rule.

Most of the new movies on that vid we saw as the whole things, not just as clips. The ones that were clips were - Watchmen, Up, ... I think that's it. Monsters vs. Aliens, the newest Terminator and the most recent Rambo were also just clips when we got 'em, but usually? It's the whole movie.

I'm not getting my hopes up about Avatar. Harry/AICN & 20th aren't huge fans of each other and I can't find a 20th 'upcoming'/'new' movie that has screened at a BNAT on the list on WikipediaClips of Iron Man 2 are possible (I guess) but the complete film is a stretch. Iron Man is a FX-heavy productionIt will be interesting to see if The Lovely Bones shows up seeing as it is being released that weekendPixar will probably show up again. It was cool when they brought in Up unfinished. I'm sure it's nice having a completed product to show to people but the geeky side of me was much more entertained by seeing in a more extended sense how exactly Pixar goes about making their films.

Am I the only one in the world who thought the one of the only redeeming things about IJ:KOTCS WAS the whole fridge gag? I feel It's one of the only true-to-the-old-Indy moments in that film, and besides: it's just as outrageous as most of Indy's other awesome stunts (being dragged behind an army truck, jumping out of a plane with a rubber dinghy, surviving a tank ride off the edge of the most hugest cliff in the world and somehow getting your hat back too...)

Seeing the clip from OLDBOY made me mad all over again that I loaned it to someone and I don't remember who it was. If it's you, please give it back, it's a great frakkin' film.

A nice guy from Seattle whom I gave vegan cookies to mailed me (post BNAT) Lady Vengeance and The Grifters (both brand new, no less) to say thanks. And, for those who are interested I've organized a few BNAT gift exchanges (like a secret santa) for people to exchange before the film fest begins. Just 'cause we don't get to live in Austin doesn't mean we don't want to meet strangers and sit in the dark with them! And get to know fellow cenephiles as well.

    by thenorthlander

Is that a place? Or just an activity?
By the way, speaking of BBQ, for two years now I've wanted to go to that Texas Chainsaw house they say has been converted into a BBQ restaurant. I need to go there.
If I get the chance to revisit Austin, I have to do that.

Harry posts a fake lineup and you can try and guess from that.

I hope to see you this year! I was the one that sent the DVD's to you (Grifters, Lady Vengence). I thought that it was one of the kindest things anyone has ever done, transport a vegan cookie over state lines. Again, I hope to see you again this year!

drive a few more miles to the city of Lockhart. There you will find the single greatest concentration of great bbq in the state of Texas. Highly recommended to out of state attendees who have an extra day to burn.

    by the reluctant austinite

Every year that fucker burns up in the projector. I think the film used for prints of "Teen Wolf" must have been cheap, but I have to credit the staff of the Alamo for trying to find a better print every year.

That's sort of what sets the Driftwood location apart. If you want to stay inside city limits, a good hole in the wall joint is Sam's on E. 12th Street. Brisket is solid, but I advise staying away from the sides.

    by beeslo

I actually went there with a buddy of mine and was shocked...its almost an exact replica of the pit they have in dripping springs...and the BBQ is pretty much identical. No need to be a BBQ snob about it. Its good BBQ and its nice that there's one closer to me now.

Honestly, if you all want great BBQ...Snow's BBQ, an hour east of Austin...amazing! Only open Saturdays and you got to get there early because they run out of food quickly....thats how good it is...

    Advertising Dollars

    by vincentofvirulence

If over a thousand people sent in applications, how many times do you think they've refreshed the page? Hundreds? About a week of that could certainly raise a sites average of hits per year which influences how much a site charges advertisers. Something to think about.
