A Trailer For Paul Greengrass & Matt Damon's GREEN ZONE Is Now Online!!

Published at:  Oct 27, 2009 1:38:00 PM CDT

Merrick here...

Yahoo has posted a trailer for the Paul Greengrass military thriller GREEN ZONE, starring Matt Damon, lots of running and 'splosions, and no small amount of shaky cam. Although...did my eyes deceive me?...or were some of those shots reasonably well locked down?

This is "inspired by" a book from Rajiv Chandrasekaran, which is available HERE.

You can view the trailer via the embed below...

    by palimpsest

Like someone said above. That's no bad thing though - BODY was a great movie that got little in the way of love. Some interesting movies are working their way out of the whole conflict issue: HURT LOCKER, SYRIANA, THE KINGDOM, (yeah it was CSI: BAGHDAD, but so what), REDACTED and so on. Part of me wants to see someone make an unapologetic unironic gung-ho war movie though; something like THE GREEN BERETS, rather than the sober-ish meditations on violence that we're tending to get. Closest thing we've had to that recently is BLACK HAWK DOWN, which (in many ways quite sensibly) ignores geo-political considerations and concentrates instead on the business of blowing shit up.

"Thanks, George. Haven't seen you since the Ocean movies. Say, what's Bob Redford and the gay guy from Brokeback doing here?" How many box office failures before they realize that? The Kingdom, Stop-Loss, Body of Lies, Traitor. Even The Hurt Locker with all its raves and excellent word of mouth only did 12.5 million. Not even the Bourne Boys can make this one fly. It's won't even sniff $100 million.

    Delays on this one

    by #1 zero

I think this was supposed to come out some time this year and got pushed back for whatever reason, to the wastelands of March, but hey, march is the new start of summer blockbusters, right? I think the book this was based on was more straightforward approach about the search for WMD and potential government cover up. That's why I thought this would be more serious as well. Is it Damon and Greengrass's fault, was it originally supposed to just be an action movie, or did the execs see the rep that Damon and Greengrass had and just turn it into an action film, possibly causing the delays? Iraq war films haven't succeeded and now that we're out of Iraq or at least going to be this seems dated.

Echo what others have said. My first thought on seeing this trailer is basically: This is where I could see the Bourne character going next (thematically, and perhaps even literally location-wise) -- he'd become re-employed by a different branch to help take out the very rogue elements which spawned him in the first place. Greengrass is one of the best filmmakers working today, in my opinion -- as someone else also noted, he single-handedly raised the caliber of the Bourne franchise (though I still do feel the second film, Greengrass' first, is the best) to something special. I wish they'd just leave it alone at this point -- especially since this film seems, in all capacities, to function as a de-facto Bourne 4 anyway...that being said, it looks great!

It has Matt Damon and the same director. End of comparisons. I don't get you guys. I've only seen a trailer and I can tell the characters are nothing alike. This one's set in a real word. I like war realism and though this has an obvious conspiracy thriller angle, and I think it might be a really good film. I'll reserve judgment until we get a better view. Plus, Holly from The Office. Not only was Identity > Ultimatum, it was the best of the Bourne films, period. Check the fight sequence at the consulate in Identity vs. any fight sequence in the other two films. It's awesome; tight, great use of camera with a nice overhead angle of him taking out two people at once, perfect framing... Greengrass never even came close to approaching anything as good as what was done in the first Bourne film. I like his storytelling, but the shakycam has got to go.

But those with power and influence want these war movies coming out of Hollywood. Without the Iraq setting this could have been a huge commercial film. Instead, it's going to be the slickest, most entertaining war propaganda film yet. I know most of the war films coming out have been anti-war for the most part, but the highest profile one to date, The Kingdom, was pure pro-west propaganda. This movie looks the same.

    by franky 5 fingers

Who has a better career as an actor? DiCaprio and Will Smith are on par, maybe Brad Pitt, but all three of them are permanent fixtures in the shitrags and gossip columns and need a small army of monkey-ass bodyguards wherever they go. Is it because Damon doesn't tease all the shitbrains with useless tidbits from his personal life? The Kimmel bits are great, he does a quality self-parody, and he seems to get that at the end of the day he's just a fucking actor. Maybe its the apparent lack of hubris, or maybe he's just really good. But this guy is killing it right now.

NOT a Bourne movie - am I the only one who's read the books?

    by potter4eva

This is NOT a Bourne movie. Having read every single Bourne book (love the original Ludlum books), this is not what Bourne is about. Bourne is really about a guy (whose real name is NOT Bourne) who went deep cover because of things that happened to his family in Viet Nam and then he lost his memory and only remembered his deep cover name of Bourne. He was then double-crossed.

However, I'm excited to see Matt Damon in another action sequenced film as a military guy who wants to get to the bottom of the truth. LOVE HIM! But love Bourne better. ;)

this is not based on the Chandrasekeran book, unless by 'based on' you mean they're both about the Iraq War. "Imperial Life in the Emerald City" is a non-fiction account behind the politics responsible for the mishandling of many aspects of our initial activity there. It was not anything resembling an action thriller.

Perhaps this is an experiment by Greengrass and Damon? "Let's see if we can get America to consume an anti-Iraq movie by making it look like a Bourne movie?"

By the way, Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are idiot cunt hypocrites. But they make great action movies!

I'm completely against the war and I know these movies are propaganda, but even I liked the Kingdom. It's has to be presented that way. The wars are so unpopular they have to sneak the mind control in by tricking you into believing the movie is presenting a balanced view. In the end the film was 99% pro-west, even though the majority of the world would tell you that we are the bad guys over there. We are living in an age of mass mind control. http://tinyurl.com/yl8wc8z

Looks like every Bourne movie and The Kingdom. I thought the book would've made a great satirical look at war, like a real life Catch 22. Guess they decided to go another, less interesting way.

This is *nothing* related to Chandrasekhar's book...

    by madeyemongo

"Life In the Emerald City" is about the screwed up occupation of iraq and how the bush "administration" sent cronies and political hacks to "take charge" in the Green Zone, who then proceeded to send the entire US occupation circling the bowl. This movie looks like a "bournization" of the search for iraqi WMD--which is also not a reflection of what actually happened.

Although it looks like a good action flick...

    by orbots commander

...it's nothing like the book. At all. The only thing it shares is the setting, the Green Zone in Baghdad.

I sat and read a few chapters of the book in the local public library, and yeah, it definitely bears no resemblance to Bourne 4: Beating the Piss Out of More Dudes. Instead, it's a sober look at the Iraqi occupation in a removed historical account. It's a history book from a major newspaper journalist.

Though, a caveat, I do like the Bourne flicks a whole bunch.

is a great story-teller, but this shaky-cam shit really has to stop. Shaky-cam doesn't make it 'more real and exciting' it makes it nauseating and impossible to follow.

The trailer might even have ALL THE EXPLOSIONS of the movie, and they shove it all in to to try to convince the slackjaws that this is an action movie and please come see it. It's advertizing at its most fraudulent. This fucking retarded idiots at advertize thinks it's more important to make a drama lok dumb and as an action movei to sell to the action junkie idiots, then to sell a smart movie to the people who might actually want to see it and make a trailer accordingly. The new trailers are so fucking bad, i could swear that Michael Bay edits all of them.
