Saying Goodbye To Vic Mizzy (1916-2009)

Published at:  Oct 26, 2009 8:56:43 PM CDT

ScoreKeeper here to pay my respects to the "all together ooky" Vic Mizzy who passed away last week at the age of 93.

Mizzy was a veteran composer and songwriter whose credits include the films THE GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN (1966), THE RELUCTANT ASTRONAUT (1967), HOW TO FRAME A FIGG (1971), and television series such as THE ADDAMS FAMILY (1964-1966) and GREEN ACRES (1965-1970) which flaunted two of the most memorable sitcom themes in the history of television.

Mizzy's infectious theme from THE ADDAMS FAMILY, punctuated by two finger snaps, would cement his legacy in the annals of television music forever. A humble man with a glowing sense of humor, Mizzy often joked, "Two finger snaps and you live in Bel-Air," a reference to the affluent section of Los Angeles which he called home.

Here is Mizzy in his own words explaining how he conjured up the iconic theme and used it to direct the opening title sequence himself.

The world can not afford the loss of such a talented tunesmith such as Vic Mizzy. He will be missed and his legacy will endure with the music he left behind. On behalf of Ain't It Cool News I'd like to express our condolences to the Mizzy family.

ScoreKeeper!

the lost art of the sitcom theme...

    by mojination

it's demise goes hand in hand with the quality sitcoms themselves.

There are still a few theme songs

    by i_max_u_mini

Psych and Monk come to mind over on USA. And it seems like all the shows my daughter watches have some sort of theme song. They're annoying as hell. Especially when you catch yourself humming the theme of a show you have never sat down and watched.

    yeah exactly: annoying as hell!

    by mojination

what happened to likes of "hogans heroes", "cheers" and even "seinfeld"?? i argue that the last great theme was Elfman's "Simpsons" theme.

    RIP Mizzy

just a huge icon in and overlooked community. and for my two cents, I think Dexter has the best opening theme song/intro on TV right now, although it's not very traditional.

Love the Ghost and Mr. Chicken theme as well..

    by 2for2true

One of the great haunted house songs ever written. FYI, Mizzy also wrote songs that were recorded by the likes of Billie Holiday.

    Another Vic Mizzy theme

    by sonny_williams

CAPTAIN NICE came out in '67 as a spoof of BATMAN and THE GREEN HORNET. Didn't last even one season, but I can still recall most of Mr. Mizzy's theme. That's how indelible his music could be. RIP

True story, I moved this guy's piano.

    by grammaton cleric binks

I never met the man, and it was either a little summer getaway house, or his daughter's house, but a friend of mine bought an old piano for $100. Turns out the daughter was telling us it belonged to her father, and he wrote The Addams Family theme song and Green Acres. Now I don't know if he did it on this piano or not, but it was kind of cool. Those are classic tv themes.

    Vic Mizzy Trivia tidbit

    by biochemist

Vic Mizzy was the first to record my friend Del Casher (inventor of the wah wah pedal for guitar for Vox) playing the wah wah guitar pedal for the soundtrack to "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken". This is the first time the wah wah guitar pedal was used in a recording.

I think Harry and Company ...

    by i_max_u_mini

... are usually too embarrassed to put up an obit once they're late. Either that or TV icons - even as big as Ed and Soupy (who even got a long piece in Time Magazine)are - are not as worthy as the 2nd Best Boy who worked on Plan 9 From Outer Space for two weeks.
