For Immediate Release

HBO RENEWS CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED DRAMA SERIES IN TREATMENT FOR THIRD SEASON, WITH PRODUCTION TO START IN NEW YORK NEXT YEAR; GABRIEL BYRNE STARS

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 23, 2009 - HBO has renewed the Emmy®-winning half-hour drama series IN TREATMENT, which will begin production on its third season in New York in early 2010, with debut scheduled for later in the year, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, Programming Group and West Coast Operations, HBO.

“IN TREATMENT is synonymous with inspired writing and brilliant acting,” noted Lombardo. “This is the kind of show that could only flourish on HBO, and we’re proud to bring it back.”

Gabriel Byrne (Emmy® nominee and Golden Globe winner for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama) stars in the series as Dr. Paul Weston, with additional cast members to be announced as they are confirmed.

The second season of IN TREATMENT inspired resounding critical praise, with the New York Times hailing the show for “powerful acting and well-wrought dialogue,” while the Los Angeles Times said the “well-drawn and compelling performances are uniformly terrific.” The Chicago Sun-Times called the series “fascinating” and Newsday termed it a “fine and absorbing show.”

Joining the show as executive producers are Anya Epstein (HBO’s “Tell Me You Love Me”) and Danny Futterman (“Capote”). Returning executive producers on the show include Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg and Hagai Levi. It is expected that Paris Barclay will return as an executive producer/director.

IN TREATMENT is produced by HBO Entertainment; executive producers, Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg, Hagai Levi, Anya Epstein and Danny Futterman; co-executive producers, Noa Tishby and Gabriel Byrne; producer, Sarah Lum.

IN TREATMENT is produced by HBO Entertainment in association with Leverage, Closest to the Hole Productions and Sheleg.

I'm gonna bet this won't be a long talkback. There are shows people love and shows people hate. Then there are the shows that nobody watches or cares about. This is one of those shows.

    Great news.

    by starwarsredux

This is one of the best things on American TV. Granted, it started out as one of the best things on Israeli TV, but hey, it seems like everybody has their favorite off-shore remake program... One man's "The Office" is another man's "Ugly Betty"...

I'm really interested to see how this turns out, as the first two seasons were based on BeTipul, an Israeli show. As that show only lasted two seasons, this time the writers will be on their own with no reference material to adapt. As far as Cory849's dismissive comments go, this is an easy show to miss, but those who do are the poorer for it. Season one is all-around incredible, particularly Sophie's episodes. Those episodes made Mia Wasikowska's career. I didn't like season two as much, but it still had some absolutely incredible acting.

    by nudeandaroused

Well, I am a fan of the show. It is a great actor's program. It is all about the ability to present. Didn;'t necessarily like the conflict with Diane Wiest. That would be the one thing I would change. I would also bring Michelle Forbes. Man, she is hot. She also is an excellent actor.

Incredible, finely-nuanced acting. Like watching a well-written stage play, with five episode a week. So glad it's coming back! If you've never seen it, rent it. One of the best shows on TV.

Check it out, Locke. The acting and characterization are fucking fantastic on this show. It's basically two actors (sometimes three, in a few joint-therapy cases) sitting together talking to each other for twenty minutes (they're half hour long episodes).

    by rhuragh

...if you enjoy incredible acting (Gabriel Byrne should be your first clue that the acting is good), with incredibly deep characterizations (they have to be, the characters sit talking about their thoughts and feelings for 20 minutes), then just buy the first season of In Treatment. You won't be disappointed.

    by ribbons

Ugh. Enough already, nerds. I just finished reading A Game of Thrones and people like you make me ashamed to admit that I thought it was great. Comparing a twenty-minute single-stage contemporary drama to an hour-long medieval fantasy is pretty much the height of jackassery. There's room in this world for two (and three, if you want to get really crazy!) TV shows, especially two as radically different as "In Treatment" and "A Song of Ice and Fire." Just because you're feeling insecure about your disgusting ignorance of anything that exists outside of your little subculture doesn't mean the appropriate response is to attack it. Or did you learn nothing from the people who I can only assume were giving you swirlies in high school?

    This is great news.

    by growltiger

I enjoyed the one episode a night format, but I can see how that may be asking too much. Although in the era of time-shifted programming it should not be that big an issue.

I thought the first series was outstanding. The second series was great but for some reason I found the stories in the premier season a bit more involving.

And yes, Ribbons, I just do not fathom how anyone could think two very different genres are in competition with each other. I love fantasy and I am pleased that HBO can find a place for that sort of programming along with fascinating drama like "In Treatment."

His show was such a treat. Talking about what Soupy did was like water cooler talk for kids. And the show was so innovative and subversive.

    Love the Show

    by mrpoop

Glad it is back for a third season. I decided to check it out when it was On-Demand after the first season ended and I was hooked right away. It is nice to see a show about people dealing with and accepting bad things, curve balls thrown at them and just life in general. Like Mia can't have a baby and probably never will have a family. It deals with her having to come to terms with that and doensn't cheese out with and ending where she adopts a baby after a long wait or has a miracle pregnancy.

    Great show

    by jocutus

I missed the first season but got hooked by the first 2 episodes of season 2 with Hope Davis as the lawyer and Alison Pill as the architecture student (my favorites of season two). The conversations are like puzzles being slowly put together. Each patient has pieces they try to keep hidden. In each session they have their own agendas, methods of deflecting analysis and attempts to counter attack and pick apart their therapist. At the end of each episode the picture becomes a little clearer. And the end of week sessions where Gabriel Byrne reveals what he's really thinking while putting up a calm face to his patients lets you go back and see each session in a new light. I'd suggest to anyone new to the show to try the first episode of each patient and see if you find any one story interesting. It's possible to just follow one patient and really enjoy the show.

    FANTASTIC News!

    by loose_seal

Season One was absolutely incredible, television at its finest. Every episode left your emotionally drained, yet you HAD to see the next one. Season 2 was a little less compelling but still excellent television, and Gabriel Byrne HAS to win an Emmy for this some day (though Cranston deserved his this year). So happy to hear it's going to get a third season. HBO is getting great again, with this coming back, Boardwalk Empire looking stunning, and of course, A Game of Thrones arriving soon as well (hopefully). Looking forward to some great television!

I agree completely. One of the things that's great about this show is that you can choose to watch only one "day," or patient, per season, and you wouldn't even realize you're missing anything. However, when you watch the entire season in order, you see a chain of events that leads from one episode to the next.
