Some info on the Stallone Formula One Racing movie, IN THIN AIR
Hey folks, Harry here with some tidbits on Stallone's Racing Movie... IN THIN AIR. I don't believe I have heard that title before... In fact I'm positive I haven't... But then Rum does that to a buffoon like me. I'm sure I just missed it somewhere. If not... Cool Title! I like it. Though I'd be more confident hearing about the quality of the script... as that is usually the chief indicator on the quality of Stallone's films. SO... If you have read it, know anything more than... Old Man makes late start at racing cars... synopsis... let us know...
Hey Harry,
I have some info which is has been released to the public unofficially
during Formula One races this year during broadcasts. I wanted to bring
this info to your attention since I am a big fan of racing movies like
Le Mans, Days of Thunder, and Grand Prix, and have been looking forward
to this project ever since it was a laughable rumor over a year ago
(Stallone fit in a cockpit of a grand prix car? No way.).
Tentative title: "In Thin Air"
Shooting begins next May.
Stallone WILL be acting as well as directing.
Stallone will wear Jean Alesi's helmet colors, but I wouldn't go as far
as to assume he will be portraying Alesi, although Stallone an Alesi
look very similar...besides their builds, of course.
Plot: Stallone portrays an older driver, making a successful new start.
The Rocky themes will be obvious- almost a Rocky with cars, to put it
simply.
The US Grand Prix, F1's return to the United States, will be prominently
featured in the movie.
Several past F1 champions will have small roles- akin to Phil Hill in
James Garner's "Grand Prix".
That is all,
Xyling

like those who race the grand prix, I had my foot on the gas and smoked ya all at the light. By the way, this movie's gonna suck. Guarenteed. Stallone oughta concentrate on dramatic material, like Copland, and leave shit like this on the back-burner until he's taken seriously as an actor (if that's possible). Crap like this is doomed to bomb. Oh yeah, WELCOME BACK HARRY!
-
Well put Shakespeare!!! Dear God, can we cut somebody a little slack in TalkBack. There was no rea,l new info revealed, no surprising plot points given away yet already the backlash has started. Stallone WAS very good in Copland, why was everyone surprised by this... he was fricken great in the original Rocky. Admitttedly he slumpped with the Rambo sequels and that whole embarrasing Comedy period, but please, let's be fair... a big budget flick about F1... sounds very cool. Let's leave the put downs till someone's read the script, or better yet, seen the damn movie. Sorry had to get that off my chest... oh and Harry... I still loves ya Big Guy!!!

Stallone has been visiting several grand prix this season. It's said that he's being instructed by Gerhard Berger (former f1-driver and Head of BMW sports). Alesi is rumoured to be involved in some way to.
Since Alesi is my favorite driver the news about Stallone using his helmet colors is great!! If this movie is about Alesi (but I somehow doubt that) I will for sure see it more than one time!!
Alesi is by the way one of the most experienced drivers in formula one right now. When Gerhard Berger was still racing they were team-mates. Alesi has only won one race in his career and has participated in over 150! The great thing about him is that he's a very very emotional driver and a real daredevil.
I hope this movie reach the screens! -
I love the F too, but how the hell can You be a big fan of Alesi- when was the last time he even scored a point ?
Welcome back Harry- I missed you -
Formula One kicks ass and so can Stallone when given the proper material. I saw him being interviewed at numerous races last season, when he first let it be known that he was making a film centered around F1. At the time, however, he made it clear that he would not be playing a driver, but a team boss who is an ex-driver. Has he changed his mind? He also made it clear that he did not intend to make a corny "from zero to hero" type-movie, but more of a documentary-type film. Hopefully he will stick to this plan, because it would be much more interesting than Rocky on wheels. Racing fans need a decent racing film! Come on Sly, we know you can do a good job!

I have this crazy idea that maybe the whole F-1 racing itself will hold about 3% of the audiences attention. Hoping this movie focuses on relationships around the main character. I'd really like to see Stallone make the same career moves Bruce Willis has recently, and reinvent himself into a true moviestar. I'm not sure if he has recovered from Judge Dredd yet, adn he is too great a talent to waste.
By the way, he would easily fit into a formula one car. He's very, very short. -
Most important - will Murray Walker get a cameo? Apologies for our American friends - Murray Walker is the British F1 commentator famous for his terrible mistakes. Seriouslt though, if this is done in the promised documentary style - with Stallone as the team owner, not the driver - it could be a great film. There's a lot of passion and high tension in Formula One - and that's just my flatmate watching it on the TV. Though I realise the film has got to have an American angle - I wonder tp what extent. F1 has been a pretty big European/rest of world thing for the last few years, I hope it doesn't end up as the comeback kid American vs the dirty cheating German, the hotheaded Italian and the dastardly British cad!

No matter how good The Outpost or Get Carter is, Formula One is the Stallone movie to keep an eye on. This is Stallone's BABY FILM. He has been trying to make this movie for over 2 or 3 years now. He owns the rights. He is writing, producing directing (possibly with Renny Harlin) and starring in this film. Stallone last said that he was putting personal finishing touches into the script to make it as great as the original Rocky. Sly has gone to every formula One race to make sure everything in his movie is as accurate as possible. Expect F1 to make Jerry Bruckheimer's Days Of Thunder look tame in comparison. This could be the big Oscar movie Stallone has been waiting for. To Harry: I don't think the name will be INTO THIN AIR. As far as I know, Into Thin Air was a Brian Grazer action thriller about witness protection that Stallone dropped out of over a year ago.

Stallone as an F1 race driver?! Damn, I was under the impression that he'd just be making movie. I think it would be real hash of a movie if Stallone's playing. I'm not saying he's a bad actor, I just can't picture Stallone racing in an F1 car. He should keep to his original idea of telling the Damon Hill vs Michael Schumacher conflict, the quiet, determind Englishman vs the rotten, cheating German! Now that would make a great F1 movie. Also, this idea of F1 making a return to the US I find highly unrealistic. I haven't heard of anything about America rehosting an F1 Grand Prix in real nor do I think I ever will (Indy Car racing is too popular there).

Ironically enough, I'm reading a 1997 draft of the Formula One script now and will have a review of it on my site FlixBurg by this weekend. This draft, which has Stallone and Renny Harlin's names on the cover, is a biopic of doomed Formula One racer Aryton Senna. If you will recall, Stallone paid a British racing impresario some $ in 1997 to use the terms Formula One in a movie title. Kinda seems like a waste now if he's using the title "In Thin Air"? Well, check out my review for this script in either case this weekend. So far it's a cool script -- but I really couldn't see Stallone involved in it. Here's my URL:

Stallone has not been confirmed to be wearing Alesi's helmet in the film. Fact is, that he recently tested a single seater car and wore a set of Jean Alesi's overalls. Sly and Jean are old mates (maybe its that whole Italian thing going on).
The last synopsis that I read (in F-1 Racing Magazine here in England) is that the film is centered around the oldest driver on the scene (Sly) and his questioning of his outlook on life and racing compared to the new, young, breed of racers entering the F1 scene. Very much a character film set against a Formula One backdrop. Incedentally, Alesi is the eldest and most experienced driver in F1 at the moment.
Cameos from existing drivers is inevitable - I think I read somewhere that Villenueve may actually have a part in the film - but I'm not sure. However, Bernie Ecclestone - the F1 supremo and all round god-like figure of F1; think Zardoz - has sanctioned the film and Sly's involvement. So its a definite go then. Hopefully Sly really feels as passionate about this as he did about the first Rocky film - we should be in for a treat.
Cant wait to get this on DVD - v10 engines screaming around my TV room - kewl.
By the way, Alesi has so far scored 1 point this season, sixth place in San Marino - and I'm not an Alesi fan. -
I heard Sly is planning on doing the majority of the racing scenes on the Gilles Villeneuve track in Montreal. Makes sense since its the only real F1 track in North America.
-
Wasn't that the title of a Mt. Everest documentory? Or maybe it was a Movie Of The Week about some mother's search for her lost child. - Either way, HOW ABOUT AN ORIGINAL TITLE!
-
Han, my boy, F1 is doe back in the US in 2000 and Indy! They're building a complete F1 circuit inside the quad oval. Where have you been?
Also, CART's popularity has been decreasing since the CART/IRL split and the increase in NASCAR... -
No, it's not a law firm! But the F1 script I'm reading has them as supporting characters along with Prost. Again, though, it's a Senna biopic. I think Banderas should star in it (he's got some BO clout now after Zorro and 13th Warrior) and Michael Mann should direct it. Mann's got a cool style and never loses sight of his characters. He tells stories about men who are dedicated to their work at the expense of their personal lives, which would suit this story nicely.

Stallone is average height (5'10 inches) for the person that said he is "very very short". F1 is going to be one hell of a high octain movie to listen to in theaters (imagine the sourround sound). I think this was the perfect movie for Stallone and Renny Harlin to re-team on. Harlin is a master of action (witness his latest Deep Blue Sea) and Stallone knows how to work the dramatics around a sports themed story (the original ROCKY anyone). I have a feeling this movie is going to end up costing over 100 million given the sports (the stunts and races alone will cost alot) not to mention Stallone and Harlin's involvment. I have old interviews taped off from 1997 when Stallone was talking about this movie on Letterman and Entertainment Tonight. Now it is set to be released in summer 2001. Let the RACING begin... vrooooooooooom!!!
-
Even though I really don't know anything about Formula One racing, I'm still really looking forward to this one as a long time Sylvester Stallone fan. If Formula One goes well it could fully re-establish Sly as a good dramatic actor. Hopefully this movie will be part sports film and part human drama all roled into one.
I think that it one way Formula One might resemble Rocky in the sense that you'll get to know the characters first before the racing comes into play, but in another way I think that Sly has something totally original in store for us.
Personally I don't think that Sly could ever top the original Rocky, but Formula One may wind up being his second all time best film.
If Renny Harlin joins this picture I think it would be cool if he and Sly co-directed the movie. Harlin could focus on the racing action, and Sly could focus on character development and the non racing scenes.
-
JSL, I agree with you. Stallone could focus on the character development and Harlin could work on the action scenes (what a great pair). I also think Formula One could be Stallone's best movie since Rocky (it might even match Rocky). I plan on buying the script in a few days. I want to see what Sly has written. Stallone has a great line-up so far going into the millennium: The Outpost, Get Carter and now Formula One. Sly is out to prove he's the best again.

How on Earth is Stallone going to drive a race car up Mount Everest? That's something I'd pay to see :)
