Laeta Kalogridis is adapting GHOST IN THE SHELL for Dreamworks...

Published at:  Oct 23, 2009 3:26:50 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with another Science Fiction project that we need to all pray to the gods that be, will be awesome!

GHOST IN THE SHELL, like AKIRA, is Holy Material in the Manga world. Our good buddy, former Marvel master and Toy Tycoon - Avi Arad is producing this to be a live action 3D movie according to Variety. This is a tremendous project. And while I'm a fan of Laeta Kalogridis' script work, if not always the end results due to powers beyond her control... well... Hollywood has a very bad track record for adapting female driven action/adventure - when not being helmed by James Cameron. It is also interesting because Laeta was involved with BATTLE ANGEL ALITA with Cameron - along with a few other projects of his.

In the wake of AVATAR - it'll be interesting to see how fast Jim gets moving on that project - and who Dreamworks ends up getting attached to direct GHOST IN THE SHELL. Will this turn into a dueling banjo set of projects that we all root for one over another.... or could be possibly end up blessed with two brilliant female driven live-action 3D manga adapted brilliance in a theater near all of us?

God that'd be cool!

    by thoreau

I actually prefer them to the movies, by far, perfect examples of solid serialized storytelling mixed with ideas, visuals, a noir-esque aesthetic and memorable characters.

I would love to see a movie that could capture the brilliance of 2nd gig in particular, I am skeptical but hope the right director can be found to make it happen...

nudity, or at least whoever plays Motoko Kusanagi needs to walk around in a thong and other skimpy clothing ala the tv series, but this isn't gratuitous because it shows how her being a cyborg and all she just doesn't give a fuck about modesty, it adds to the character, no really it does! but will any big name actress do anything like that in modern Hollywood? not bloody likely, just look at the Aeon Flux movie for example that had Charlize Theron running around in a Goddamned leotard while the cartoon had Aeon wearing bondage looking gear (complete with thong) /end of rant

Probably right, inasmuch as it's a brilliant movie that just happens to be animated. Been watching both the movies on Blu-Ray and they aren't the sort of thing you could possibly appreciate on just one viewing. They get better the more times you watch them as they're just so full of great ideas that they need time to sink in. The comics are great, the tv series is amazing, hope the live action doesn't let the side down.

The animation in both are still incredible to me, but I had to go read the comic after seeing the movie because I had no clue WTF was going on. After I read the comic, I understood why, the movie was an extremely poor attempt at mashing several completely seperate "cases" in the comic into one single cohesive story. They failed miserably making the movie a mess. The second was much more coherent in terms of story and far superior. At least that is my 2 cents.

Hollywood does not have the patience for a cerebral movie with an extremely complicated plotline. You have to keep up while watching this. Things will be dumbed down to a ridiculous level and Motoko will be tarted up and given an 'attitude' to sell more seats. Fail before it starts.

I'm a fan of the first film but even more so of the SAC (STAND ALONE COMPLEX) series. With its serial storylines, quality animation, and fantastic voice-work, it really stands out among a rather juvenile medium.

I found it ended kinda abrupt and unfinished. Not in an open-ended kinda cool way but like a movie that just got chopped at the halfway mark. I felt like the story was barely started. I know they made a sequel like ten years later and I'll try to check it out and see if it takes this thing somewhere. But for me, it just felt like either the first half of a great movie or the first couple episodes of a great television serial.

I agree that the opening episodes burn slowly, but the last five or six shows in each series move at a breakneck pace, and they find a way to tie in a lot of the seemingly irrelevant "stand alone" eps. That said, I don't see what a U.S. live action movie would add to this franchise. The premise works better as an animated "24" than a 2 hour film.

Depending on how you approach it. If it's like Mamorou Oshii's flicks set in futuristic urban locatiosn, then Blomkamp is your man! He'd do it with unknown asian actors! This too can be done awesomely within a budget the size of D9's!If you're approaching it like the Stand Alone Complex series, then you'd definately need mroe futuristic exotic sets and colourful digital imagery for the most part that are very Japanese. Damn was that show awesome! I want to grab the boxsets, but something's telling me to hold out for a blu-ray release...SOmething's telling me HOllywood is going to simultaneously green-light and release anime projects. It won't work. It just won't. And I don't really think BATTLE ANGEL ALITA ever would, either.

If Hollywood HAS to try with anime, stick to stuff like Evangelion. Macross/Robotech. Escaflowne. I don't really think they'd work as Hollywood films either, but I'm kind of curious to see them TRY with Evangelion - it just seems like an insane idea, especially given the ages of the kids (13-14) and what they go through in the story, from mutilation and depression to (gasp!) homosexual flirtation.

    by adelai niska

Decent movie (especially for visuals) but I doubt anyone could actually explain the entire storyline of GITS, with all the government doublecrossing and shit. Does not make sense. It's a story about a computer that does bad things and a hot female cop who constantly gets naked for some reason. But invisible-suit gunfights would be neat to see in live action.

    The original film is mediocre;

    by shibi

But the Stand Alone Complex series was amazing. The series was able to tell captivating stories without running into the pacing problems the film had. I think Gits is best suited to serialized adaptation due to the complexity of the setting and storylines. There just isn't enough time to tell a compelling story in the Gits universe and explain it in a 2 hr runtime. Solid State Society is also far superior to the first film.

Alita is being done by James Cameron. It'll work!

    by johnno

Heck, it's an easier sell than Avatar! Evangelion won't have the kids being underage. They'll be 18. And I'm betting money that the new Eva movies will be what they follow as it's being made more broadly appealing. And in any case the whole homosexual flirtation thing didn't really happen, Kowaru speaks of love and stuff in a more existential sense. And Shinji clearly has the hots for all 3 female leads. His fascination with Kowaru was simply from finally finding someone who maybe actually cared and gave a damn about him that he could be more comfortable being with personality-wise. But this will probably be avoided for the more confident ballsy less whiny Shinji from the manga or the recent Rebuild movies. An Escaflowne movie would certainly be cool, but I doubt it'll happen. RObotech is a sure thing. Akira will inevitably happen. And I'm betting we'll also see studios making bids for Gundam and Full Metal Panic at some point, but this will follow if Robotech is successful. I believe Death Note in America will also happen. I'm surprised Ninja Scroll hasn't been done yet, but maybe Ninja Assassin will get it green-lit somewhere. A Vampire Hunter D movie would also be class! Hellsing would be too awesome, but will never happen, at least not in a way where it won't be heavily neutered...Anyway I tihnk it's sad and a given that GITS will take place in America, and we'd be lucky if we so much as get an asian lady to be Motoko, so I'd expect names to be changed to Malary, or they'll just refer to her as the Major. Batou will become Benjamin, Chief Aramaki will be Chief Asimov as some kind of cleer sci-fi reference and played by Morgan Freeman. Quite honestly if they're going to go this route, why not just make new characters and a story that takes place in the America of the GITS universe... At least they can claim it's a companion piece to teh Stand Alone complex series and write a new story. Just take the tech and concepts and say it's a new story taking place in the Ghost in the Shell universe, only in America while the real Section 9 members can be in Japan and maybe even cameo as secondary characters. I'm down with that. but most of you will INSIST on having the Major in it and that it adapt the story form the films/ TV show/ manga so it won't happen.

    Unfortunately....

    by iamlegolas

GHOST IN THE SHELL was already done on the big-screen, it's called THE MATRIX. This will come off as "been there, done that" with the mainstream.

Great idea about an american counterpart of Section 9 set in the Gits world. I believe there are several references made to American intervention made during 2nd Gig, and could see a story of the events from an American perspective being interesting. Plus it would have the added bonus of potentially having section 9 members appear in the story. American studios may not be ready to allow asian leads, but they don't mind asian supporting actors or antagonists.

    GITS

    by quamb

Is the ultimate. Makes me feel sick that hollywood are moving forward on this and I aint part of it :P.
Also - for those that think the Matrix is similar have no imagination. GITS has a completely different look and feel. If the movie was done properly, I'd see it more akin to say the gritiness of the Bourne films. BUt we'll probably get slick michael-bay style 3d shit instead.

Even despite the fact that it's not live action, it's been in the works for over two years and is yet to be completed. At this rate even james cameron's battle angel will more likely make it to the big screen before the "Science Ninja Team".

The new EVA films are clear as mud to n00bs

    by reflecto

From what I'm hearing about the second film it makes things even more complicated and seems to indicate that this is more of a SEQUEL to End Of Evangelion than a redo; Kaworu keeps talking about "here we go again, Shinji." As for the flirtation with Kaworu we'll disagree about the intent, and I heard GAINAX was very dogged and determined about the kids' ages - so it's a hard sell.

The only way to do GITS or Eva in the US is

    by reflecto

do what was suggested above - "the American branch" of Section 9 and of NERV. There is even a Western branch mentioned in Evangelion. Don't try to compete with the original series and make American sensibility correspond to the madness of Japan - find a happy medium that not destroy the stories which have been told.

The American Branch of NERV was (spoiler post)

    by johnno

Destroyed, right? Or wait... there were two branches. One got fucked and so the other wet their pants and shipped Unit 4 to Tokyo 3... I don't know if there's much there to go on with Eva. GITS is an expansive universe, basically a cop show, and cops exist and deal with crazy shit everywhere so there'd be no issues having a totally different set of characters elsewhere dealing with similar cyber crime that can go hand in hand with the original series/movie in the same world. Evangelion on the other hand has to be focused on what's going on in Tokyo-3. And maybe Evangelion could also work if it was Americanized. There's not much 'Japanese' there location wise or personality wise that'd really be lost. NERV seems like a pretty international organization to me and probably has employees from various nations. Don't get me wrong I'd fully want a Tokyo -3 Eva as much as I'd love a Neo-Tokyo only Akira. But I think Evangelion wouldn't lose much being set in America or having the cast culturally changed aside from aesthetics.

Robots are the in thing! Hollywood wil go after those.

    by johnno

Cameron tried in Aliens. Matrix Revolutions finally did something big with them. District 9 nailed it! And Avatar is also gonna up the ante. And let's not forget Transformers. Robotech is pretty much guaranteed to happen at some point. I'm betting some studios are already bidding for the rights to Gundam, Full Metal Panic, and I think someone should honestly grab Escaflowne just so we get robotic things of a different flavor just to change things up! Aim Escaflowne at the Twilight crowd. I can't think of any other large robot shows that'll come to mind. They'll probably try and mine things from videogames at that point like Mechwarrior or Armored Core.

Johnno, an EVA film would not have to correspond

    by reflecto

to the series - just take the idea of the "American branch" from the original show and use it to set an EVA film in America or the West with an international cast. You're right that all the real action of the original story is set in and around Japan; there would be no point in doing a live action US film about "across the pond." Just do a new continuity using that single strand (the Western branch) as a defense against those complaining the cast is not all Japanese.

Gundam is great but would not work over here

    by reflecto

While Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 in particular is a classic story I just can't see them doing it in America. The whole idea of the Gundams is too innately Japanese, and the whole mythology of Lalah Sun, the Newtype, etc is their version of the Star Wars myth and would be called out as derivative in an American film. I do think they can do Cowboy Bebop, but Keanu is not right for Spike. And Macross can be done, so long as they use the original show's story and only change the TITLE to Robotech - don't use the Carl Macek pastiche format.

clearly some people watched and didn't get GITS

    by maniaq

so I've heard Snow Crash, Neuromancer, The Matrix, and many others mentioned so far - clearly GITS fits into the same genre as these other stories - but THEY ARE NOT THE SAME.
in terms of the actual story (not plot, which is not the same thing) it is mostly like Neuromancer - Project 2501, like William Gibson's Matrix, is an artificial intelligence born in cyberspace. So it doesn't have a body, per se - it is a SOFTWARE intelligence, and there's a whole philosophical conversation I'm not going to get into about such matters...
the POINT is mentioned about halfway through the movie, I think just after they find the guy who had his original memories replaced with some bogus ones - in a world full of robots and cyborgs, where do you draw the line and say "here ends human rights and thus begins machine rights" or "here ends human rights and machines have no rights so it just ends here"??
I guess it was kinda explored in Animatrix, which is kinda The Matrix, but it's really just a side issue in all these other stories whereas it is the CENTRAL THEME to this movie - it is what it is basically about...

btw, speaking of side notes, I recently reread Snow Crash - doesn't hold up well - no point in making a film now... CRYPTONOMICON on the other hand...

Patlabor! I forgot about that one!

    by johnno

That's one that could work very well! Though quite honestly I feel things like GITS work better as television shows where every week we can explore a variety of different faucets of its future society. The possibilities truly are endless. As opposed to films where rightly so they must focus on something central. However TV shows, unless animated couldn' possibily get the budget to do a show like that, unless it's a miniseries or somethingbut they'd pretty much require a film budget to get it to look cool ehough...I see what you mean reflecto. That could possibly work as a "What if it happened this way" angle... hmmm maybe... The_Crimson_King, a panel for panel adaptation of Hellsing would really kick ass. Especially if they included a lot of FX work to get the crazy movements, expressions and crazy hellish eyes/shadows of their characters to match the artwork of Hirano. Man it would be outrageous! I think they can pull it off well with a hard R rating. A few concessions can be made in terms of what they show explicitly, just so long as the central ideas are there or at least implied! It would have to go for a trilogy and definately be the Vampire movie to end all Vampire movies! Everything else that's come before it would be a children's happy cartoon in comparison! It's got Vampires, Werewolves, Nazis, and perhaps the most insane badass protrayals of the Protestant and Catholic Church to ever be put down on print! It's so insane and over the top, I love it! If I were to make these films I'd start off with a prequel that mixes in The Dawn and the Cross-fire short stories along with Angel Dust. Then follow it with a proper trilogy that adapts the Hellsing manga. The first movie from where we are introduced to Seras Victoria up to the pint where the Yan Brothers infiltrate the Hellsing manor. The second and third films will be back to back and will follow the Millenium Arc tot he invasion of London and finally to the end. The Manga's still ongoing so I don't know where it'll end, but I think it'll come to a close soon. That said anyone can check out the Hellsing Ultimate OVAs which are pretty good adaptations but I wish they'd kept the music from the original anime show as I liked that it lent a different sort of feel to the sort of music you traditionally find in Vampire movies or even the Euro trash metal found in the more modern ones.

    Snow Crash

    by maniaq

look I was blown away the first time I read it too - that was maybe fifteen years ago, and the ideas it described at the time were pretty cool - at the time...
Ideas like the Metaverse seemed like a cool concept - until they became real in the form of Second Life and WoW and it turns out they're actually quite lame... The single-mum Fed with the rebellious teenager - wasn't all that interesting back then and has proven to be quite lame, featuring in things like the V remake... L Bob Rife - a kind of cross between L Ron Hubbard and Ted Turner - boring. Gated Communities - boring. Mafia-themed pizza delivery chain - I remember one got into trouble a while back for taking their image a little too seriously - I think they got busted dealing drugs? Kinda funny really.. Language is a Virus? Thanks Laurie Anderson (actually I still think this is a cool concept, after all this time).
don't get me wrong - I'm not saying it SUCKS - like I said, first time I read it I thought it was great - I just think it aged badly...

    I dunno

    by betasword

Well, I don't know, if this would result in a good Movie, since Ghost in the Shell was pretty brutal, contains nudity, and some brainwashing.
So it might result in an "Funimation-OnePiece"-like-ish way(I'm soo happy, the German DUB wasn't polluted by this).

Also Story and Presentation in Ghost in he Shell was pretty much awesome, that it might get really tough to get close enough to it's Original(recorded the long Version with my USB2.0-DVB-T-Stick).
If they make it as good as the Original, not leaving any of the details out(like the Nudity of the female Cyborg-Agend for her Cloaking), I thik I'll like it.

But due to some prude people, I think that most scenes will get cut, and they aim for a PG13, which would be annoying.
