Epic air-drumming road trip comedy ADVENTURES OF POWER hits Salt Lake City and Austin today!

Published at:  Oct 23, 2009 1:15:03 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I've been following Ari Gold's ADVENTURES OF POWER since seeing it premiere in the midnight slot at Sundance last year. I really enjoyed myself (as can be evidenced by my review) and dug the world Ari Gold created. Yeah, I know his name's familiar to fans of Entourage and the fact that Vinny Chase himself is in this movie doubles the hilarity I'm sure, but the dude's a real deal talent.

Instead of taking a pitiful direct to video offer, Gold is going old school and four-walling his movie across the country. It opens in SLC at the Tower Theater and here in Austin at the Regal Arbor today.

What you get in Adventures of Power: Michael McKean as a hard-ass father, Jane Lynch as a smart-ass matronly figure, Adrian Grenier as a rapping country star named Dallas Houston with a hidden air-drumming passion, lots of Rush, the awesome character actor Steven Williams playing a handless air-drumming coach and a deaf love interest for Ari Gold's lead character played by the adorable Shoshannah Stern.

It takes a lot of courage to self-distribute and Gold has a movie that will gain a lot of fans. It might be too crazy for some people out there, but if you dig off-kilter comedy check it out if you can.

As of Friday it's in Austin and Salt Lake City and they're moving on to Phoenix, Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Portland after that.

Check out the trailer!

Anyone seen that movie called NAPOLEON DYNOMITE?

    by redyossarian

Cause this looks almost exactly like it. At least they could have dressed the main character differently.

    The rocker II?

    by powerring

The premise might be ok, but it seems wafer-thin and has a high potential to simply be stupid...I will be shocked if it doesn't suck.

    Um...it's NOT Napoleon

    by jotham

While the comparison to Napoleon Dynomite are bound to happen. The story here looks totally different. Just because someone else made a movie about a lovable loser doesn't mean they are copying ND.

    Tower.

    by earl warren

The one thing I miss about living in SLC is the Tower. Took my wife to see Monty Python and the Holy Grail for her first time. Oh, as far as this movie; it looks like someone combined Hot Rod and Napoleon Dynamite. Meh. Not gonna seek it out.

Any fan of Neil and Rush is a friend of mine. Bless you, sir!

Regarding the movie, I'm not too sure. It just doesn't look all that funny to me. However, I'd be remiss if I didn't express sincere kudos to Ari Gold for legging this thing all over the place. That's true dedication and I salute it. I also wish him lots of success. Whereas I'm not expecting to love it, I shall go to see this movie. It will be a great day if I wind up being pleasantly surprised.

    Good film, great people

    by marbles12078

As a friend of both Ari Gold and Adrian Grenier (together members of NYC band The Honey Brothers) I had seen this movie a while ago. Adrian is actually the drummer in his band, and when he ventures out from behind the kit, Ari takes the throne. Ari's early short Helicopter is a fantastic short. It is now online here http://vimeo.com/6887916 and worth watching.
