That Rapscallion DEXTER Is Up To More Mischief, And Capone Calls 4.4 A Game-Changer!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!
Everybody knows the actors who play Laguerta and Angel co-starred on “Oz,” right?
Dexter nearly gets caught again in tonight's episode, scripted by Melissa Rosenberg (not Joan Rivers' daughter; I speak of the gal writing all those “Twilight” movies).
Here’s AICN’s crazy-busy man in the Midwest, “Capone”:
Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago. Sorry I dropped the ball on last week's great Dexter. The Chicago Film Festival has been stomping my ass as I try to keep up with it, but I wanted to make sure to clue you all in to this week's game-changing episode. I'm sure this season has a whole lot more in terms of the direction of the show, but the cliffhanger ending this week I did not see coming and I can't imagine what the fallout is going to be. Here we go…
What's the title of "Dexter" 404?
"Dex Takes A Holiday"
Who directed?
My favorite "Dexter" director John Dahl, the filmmaker who helmed the films KILL ME AGAIN, THE LAST SEDUCTION, JOY RIDE, RED ROCK WEST, ROUNDERS, and YOU KILL me. In recent years, he's been one of television's best directors, having taken the reigns on key episodes of "Californication," "Battlestar Galactica," "Breaking Bad," "True Blood," "The Vampire Diaries," "United States of Tara," and two previous episodes of "Dexter." There's a reason they brought him in to direct this particular episode; they needed the best from their pool of regulars.
Who wrote it?
Co-written by series executive producer Melissa Rosenberg, who has also written eight other episodes of the series and is probably best known for adapting the TWILIGHT movies. But the bottom line is, she's the best writer this series has. Her co-scripter here is supervising producer Wendy West, who has also written episodes of "The Closer," "The Beast," "K-Ville," Numb3rs," "The Practice," and "Law & Order: SVU."
Where do we pick things up?
After we witnessed the Trinity killer (the great John Lithgow) take his second victim last week (the mother who fell to her death), Debra and Lundy (the equally great Keith Carradine) are trying to figure out where Trinity's next murder will happen by figuring it out where he murdered 30 years earlier in Miami. Does anyone else find it a bit strange that Dexter isn't really involved deeply with the Trinity killer investigation? I'm not sure it bothers me and I'm pretty sure it won't last long, but it does seem conspicuously unlikely. But I digress…
After Rita sees Dexter smash out security lights in his suburban neighborhood, she decides Dexter needs to take some time away from the family to wind down. She takes the kids to a wedding, leaving Dexter at home to carry out his latest act of twisted justice.
Any blowback from Quinn's pillow talk with the hot reporter?
You bet. An article detailing how Miami homicide resources are being taken away from the vacation killer murders to investigate a possible serial killer lands on the front page, all based on what the reporter learned last week in bed. Quinn takes swift action after getting chewed out by, well, everyone he works with, Debra in particular. As a result, Lundy knows his free pass to use police resources has likely expired.
He and Debra think they have it narrowed down the exact location of Trinity's next murder--a dive bar. Meanwhile, it's becoming increasingly clear that Lundy has strong feelings for Debra, to the point where she feels the need to say something to him. At home, Debra must deal with a jealous Anton, who has every reason to feel threatened.
How does Dexter choose to spend his three days off from the family?
Killing. He has his sights set on a beautiful female police officer who he suspects of murdering her husband and young daughter and framing another criminal. The blood analyst on the case tipped Dexter that something wasn't quite right. Ghost father Harry prods Dexter about his reasons for picking this particular victim--perhaps the idea of taking a permanent vacation from the family appeals to Dexter?
Does the Trinity Killer do anything exciting this week?
A series of strange moves from Lithgow's character this week. We see him at the aforementioned dive bar getting his ass kicked He also spends a little time in the library researching home layouts when he spots the article in the paper about Lundy investigating him. Also, he makes direct contact with Lundy for the first time in his career. His response, "I'm found."
How about the vacation killer murders?
No movement there this week, other than as a talking point.
How's the blossoming office romance going between Lt. Laguerta and Angel?
Being the political being that she is, she wants to formally disclose their relationship to the brass in case it would ever come up in a trial that two investigators were sleeping together. He's against it for purely emotional reasons. Both of them go to, of all people, Dexter for advice.
What I liked.
It's been a very long while since the show has really shown us Dexter's entire process, and I didn't realize until this episode how much I missed it. We see his investigation, his clever way of getting into the well-secured house of a fellow cop to look for evidence in the killings. He inadvertently meets his intended victim, flirts, gets busted looking into her case, threatened all sorts of way by the cop, and their final showdown actually takes place in Dexter’s empty house. Dexter is unusually bold with this control-freak victim. He bats her beehive and gets her to come to him. Way to improvise, Dexter.
What I didn't like.
There's nothing in this episode that doesn't work. As a result, my only complaints about it are that I wanted more of certain things, especially Trinity. But I suspect that after this week's final scene, more of what I'm desiring will be in wild abundance in coming episodes.
How does it end, you tease?
Invisotext on! Rita and the kids come home early from the wedding. Three shots ring out; two bodies fall.

Otherwise this seems like a standard, if well-executed, Dexter ep. And it's "Quinn", not "Flynn." And I think you mean Rita and the kids, not Debra and the kids. Unless I'm wrong of course, though Debra isn't the kiddie type.
-
Maybe Tron's Flynn is hiding out in the world of Dexter?

Oh, and Deb went with Rita and the kids to the wedding?

Must have been a mutual friend :\

...last week's episode of Dexter was awful. The pool party bit reminded me of Star Trek: Generations and I wanted to turn the show off for good. That was only the tip of the iceberg. Then Rita told Dexter that he's barely been there as a husband and as a father. And I literally shouted at my television that he was the only one who was waking up at night to rock the baby. It was utterly absurd. Then Dexter pushed Astor into the swimming pool. I get that Dexter is a psychopath, but that doesn't mean he has the IQ of a gnat. It was so fucking infuriating that the episode shat all over everything they've so carefully established for the past 3 and change seasons.
Secondly, I figured that Dex wasn't into the Trinity killer because Lithgow didn't tickle his Dark Passenger. I may have been unduly influenced by the latest novel in this aspect, but it kind of makes sense. Trinity is very alien to Dex; a serial killer who has accomplished everything Dex wants to do, in a sense. And Dex has only ever been told that he will fail, so all he's doing is staving off that failure and the electric chair. Trinity doesn't think like that, so it's totally alien to Dex. -
I agree with almost everything you're saying. I had the same reminiscing of Star Trek: Generations when he pushed her into the pool. I like the idea of Dexter being a bit of a blank slate in terms of his humanity, but it was a stupid scene and was obviously ripped off because one of the writers loved Data. It was a very poorly executed moment on all fronts (acting, directing, writing).
And Rita accusing Dexter of not being there for the family? Horrible. -
I don't know if you've seen the Rifftrax for Generations, but their comment on that scene was the first thing that popped into my head while watching that scene. "Pointing-and-laughing-is-more-fun-than-pointing."
-
Suburban Shenanigans in a show about a deranged, maladjusted serial killer. Give me a break. And I agree that Rita is the dumbest, most annoying character on television, whose sole purpose is plot construction. This season is incredibly weak compared to all three seasons so far. It's still a good show, but I'm disappointed, And I hate Rita. So much.
-
Cause that would suck, because Jennifer Carpenter is awesome and Deb is one of my favorite female characters on tv. The only other option is Rita, but I really don't see the show abandoning those children into the sole care of Dexter the murderer. I'm sure it ends with someone bleeding out on a sidewalk, and they inevitably won't die next week. At least I hope. Unless its Rita. Then let her die. And then let the kids die. And then let this show get back on track without them.
-
I don't think that Lundy, Quinn or the reporter are game changers. If I had to bet I would maybe say that we see a flashback murder or a Miami PD season 1'er go down.
-
That book looks fing sick man. http://sickpicks.blogspot.com/
-
I agree Rita is a joke of a character. It seems like they don't know what to do with her anymore except make drama for Dexter. It's almost as if they are making her unlikeable so when someone kills her she won't be missed...
-
Honestly, what do they do with the kids if Rita gets whacked? Its been thoroughly established that, murderer he may be, Dexter truly, seriously CARES about those kids. He won't let anything happen to them, its been demonstrated. He framed Paul for them. He almost abandoned Rita one time, but I'm pretty sure one of his main staying points was those kids. They can't kill Rita and have Dexter handle those fucking kids by himself, and it would be too fucked up to kill Rita and then send the kids to foster care or some shit. They really, really have written themselves into a corner with Rita. There is nowhere left to take the character, and the only function they can give her is silly foil to complicate Dexter's life. To up tension in the silliest of ways. The only direction they could go is to let her in on Dexters secret, but again, that would never work. Rita isn't that type of person who could see through it, or past it. She would kill herself. There's no way they can let Rita into Dexters true world, ever. It just wouldn't work.
-
Rita getting whacked - she has a mother who could take the kids at some point.
-
allready mentioned it would be a man for the 3rd kill so im guessing... anton, lundy or angel
-
In the books Cody, Astor and Debs know Dexter's secret and I think they have to expand the series at some point to follow this if they want to keep it interesting. I can't see Rita finding out playing too well and if this happens I foresee amnesia in her future.

and you know this from the books only to come on here and spoil it then that is fucked up. when i see spoiler i expect it in the article not the TB. thanks a lot. guess i can start watching desperate housewives. assholes.
-
they are just making educated guesses. Although it does make sense, I am hoping the writers planned on us figuring that out and then throw in a curve ball to throse us off again. I can only hope, but you guys are probably right.
-
and I'm hoping that Lundy and Trinity aren't related - it's been done with the ice-truck killer already. Far better to have Trinity kill Lundy/Angel/Anton/ Quinn/Masuka?!? to up the stakes. Oh and why's some dude mention Stephen King and then shill his blog-site above??
-
No offense, but in my opinion, that would be fucking retarded. There is absolutely no way it turns out that way, I'd bet money.
-
Shows love that kind of poetic, ironic justice, where the guy he chased for his entire career ends up being the one to put him down. And it will probably happen an episode after Lundy discovers what Dexter really is.
As far as the Stephen King thing goes, its because they advertised his new book up above, below the story, above the talkback. He's either a huge fan, or paid to do this whereever the book is being advertised. -
I think Dexter has become TOO likable. He needs to do something so evil, it makes us question if we really should be rooting for him or not. But I still love the show.
-
Lundy doesn't qualify, as he borderline wasn't in the game to begin with.
-
Crow3711 i agree with most of what your saying. I want Lundy to go out in style though. Not a victim. Deb isn't going anywhere either. Isn't she dating Dexter in real life? Kill Laquerta*spelling?* She has been a blind useless character for far to long. Dokes? Prado? Strikes 1 and 2.
-
and i liked last weeks epi and i hope trinity kills lundy...then caine will be killed off both of my fav shows
-
Trinity kills ladies with two kids. God, I hope it's her.
-
I'm not counting Dexter's obviously
-
Ok, so Lundy is gunned down and likely dead. Deb will recover and be racked with guilt and self doubt (again). Lundy's character could have developed into something interesting, but it was wasted before it could be explored. Are the writers from the show Heroes working on Dexter now?
-
i was just wondering if im the only one who finds debs character annoying as hell. i really like this show but everytime i see her on it , it takes away from the show. i dont mind a woman with a sarcastic smart ass mouth but she goes wayyyyy to far with it. i actually really like this season so far, prob cause i think john lithgow is awesome and the invetiable showdown between trinity and dexter is coming.
-
is obviously the one who gunned them down.he's jealous,he catches the 2 of them 2gether and blam!!!deb will live-she's a main character, lundy dies-dex goes after trinity.simple really
-
I'm currently reading 'Darkly Dreaming Dexter.' I have to say, the show is one of the best adaptions I've ever seen out of any adaption. Michael C. Hall owns the role. Would I enjoy book #2 or no? I've heard different things from different people.
-
I've read all of them and none have been disappointing; you should enjoy them.
... as far as this season:
I'd prefer a better build-up towards the inevitable Dexter-Trinity showdown. Last season's Finale was extremely anti-climactic because the entire face-to-face took about 5-10 minutes from start to finish.
I think Dex has the advantage here because Trinity has been methodical for 30 years while Dexter has proven he can adapt to situations (so long as he can get some sleep; give the baby a capful of cough syrup dude!).
The Trinity/Lundy theory (brothers?) would ruin the plot. Lundy has said he's been married, maybe the ashes in the urn Trinity worships is Trinity's sister ... who was also Lundy's ex-wife. Maybe she was his ex-partner and got killed on the job ... who knows.
Oh yeah, killing Rita: the cons here that it'd leave Dexter with 3 kids is valid; except that in the books, not only do they know his secret ... they have their own Dark Passengers: and Dexter becomes their Harry.
I think our overly PC society would trip over itself if they tried to incorporate this into the show, so I think Rita is safe.
Anton going from pot-head musician to jealous-gun-toting-boyfriend is a bit of a stretch ... but I likes!
Gloria & Angel ... meh ... wtfever
Anyway, I'll keep watching. It's the only show that comes close to the other serial killer who was always a step ahead of everyone ("Epitafios" ... highly recommended!) -
Books 1,2 and 4 are good. 3 changes the game, but in a bad way - avoid. Any character they're trying to get us to like recently is in danger - Lundy and Masuka. I don't think either will survive this season.
-
Unless Capone was referring to Dexter coming to the realization that he needs Rita and the kids, which it seems most of us hate nowadays anyway. How annoying is Rita going to be next week bitching at Dexter about that goddam apartment? UGGHH She was way more interesting when she was mentally fucked up in the first season.
Lundy dying was way obvious, the surprise was that it was the vacation killer and not Trinity. I thought for sure that Lundy would end up being the older man that gets bludgeoned. -
Now that I think back, you're right about #3. That book was nothing like the others. It seemed a little too ... I dunno ... "rushed in order to tie things up"?
Good call tho -
spoilers below
i thought it was anton that gunned down lundy and deb but i think that is just a red herring, they were gunned down by the vacation killer.
also the trinity killer's M.O. is a young woman, then a MILF and then an older man. If Lundy survives the robbery then I think he will be the final victim. -
as the shooter. He shot Deb first and then Lundy.
I was expecting the trinity killer to wait til deb left and kill lundy.
Personally I'm hoping Deb dies but knowing standard tv rules, lundy dies and Deb lives on. -
We're going to have to get used to the idea that Herc is not alone in making the headlines unrepresentative of the actual story.
It's not a sickness, they're just treating the stories the way the mainstream news does. Get hits/viewers at the expense of accuracy.
Its a strategy that can only work in the short term, as readers/viewers tend to value accuracy more though it takes them some time to realise it. -
He seemed to be breathing in that final scene.
-
I think it's most likely the Trinity Killer shot Lundy and Deb, given the scenes immediately prior. I doubt Trinity and Lundy are brothers-- when Trinity bumped into him, Lundy didn't recognize him. I honestly don't think there's any relation between Trinity and Lundy, other than hunted and hunter.
-
But if a supporting character getting killed off is considered one then every other episode of 24, Heroes, or Lost would be a game changer. -
Fuck, that ending was unexpected. It looked like a mugging but I'm assuming it's Trinity taking Lundy out and making it look like a simple mugging.
After shooting Deb I can see Dex devoting the rest of the season to hunting down Trinity. -

I thought Dex's feelings about his family were game changing
by photoboy
He's gone from being a lone hunter with no attachments to someone brought to tears by the thought of losing his family. He only used to fear being caught and executed, now he fears losing his family. I think that's a pretty big change.
-
Dexter realizing he would rather his family know about what he does/is vs. losing them was pretty outstanding. I'm wondering if he's going to reveal it to them (or they find out) this season[?]
Lithgow is excellent - the scene where he was prodding the guy outside the bar was freaking creepy. I'm figuring the 3 kills are a parallel to his sister, mother and father plus the mother with two kids would make the children him and his [dead] sister.
re: the ending shot (pun intended I guess...), Anton? As someone else mentioned, that would be a pretty fucking radical shift in what seems like an otherwise pretty mellow personality (granted he has some criminal past, but it wasn't AFAIR, anything violent). Trinity seemed to be a little rattled about Lundy since he's flown under the radar for so long, seems like a simple way to make sure he can stay free.
FWIW, I kept expecting Imogen Heap to kick in during that last scene :)
-
I would say I'm almost positive, based on how rattled he was when Lundy caught up to him, the fact that he went so far out of his way to really get a good look at Lundy and have that interaction, and that he has the perfect cover-up with the recent tourist murders. He shoots Deb to wound, because he isn't threatened by her, shoots Lundy (two or three times, which is important. he only shot Deb once, because hes not itnerested, just wanted to make it seem like a robbery. But he really tried to kill Lundy, two or three to the chest. And then he takes the watch and wallet and runs off. No hint of serial killer retribution. Until Deb hears the voice recorder of Lundy describing Trinity, and she wil get revenge. Maybe Dex will help her murder him. Now that would be a fucking game changer.
-
Check out (or don't, depending on how much you want to know...) the extended preview [for next EP] on the SHO site. It makes it pretty clear the aftermath of the shooting.
-
i just dont get why trinity bump into lundy (obviously on purpose). my guess was to make sure lundy didnt really know who he was, but im sure he would have noticed lundy following him to the bus? i really did not see that ending coming though, i thought it would end with deb leaving and then we see trinity watching them. i didnt think they'd go all out. i guess hurting deb is the shoe in way of getting dexter involved though. great episode (after last week's abortion)
-
I think that Trinity's MO requires the third victim to have some sort of physical alteraction with him prior to the kill. In Lundy's case, it was as simple as Trinity just bumping into him...the guy outside the bar, a little more. That said, the deliberate dropping and leaving of the keys has some relevance too, I'm sure, just not sure what.
-
if this sets Deb down the path (whether for revenge or in honor of Lundy) to becoming a serial killer hunter, leading to her finding out Dex's secret. And I really want to read the books, the more that I hear about them.
-
The second book was just awful on every possible level. The show is such an improvement on them.
-
I quit reading the books after finishing the 2nd one. Piss poor plot and writing. I heard 3 was terrible, but was told that 4 might be worth checking out. TV show on the other hand in still great.
-
Very good ep.
-
She is anoying beyond belief. Dexter does everything for he,r and she still complains? That's a definition of a bitch right there! Anoyng ingrateful skank! Little she knows she could had her pretty head in a spike!
-
is right on. Dexter is being too good. He's pratically emasculated, specially after the wedding. Whielthere's good comedy being milked on thenotion of a murdering psycho in the middle of suburbia, the fact is that the people behind the series are making Dexter too much of a ncie guy. Too nice with Rit,a too nice with the kids, too nice with everybody. He should feel more false, more like he's pretending all the time, even with Rita and the kids.I think should always be on the edge of losing his Code Of Harry, in that Dexter would had no problem killing anybody, even some innocent if he could not find a suitable guilty person soon. He should be more on the edge. He should be always on the edge of losing his adherence to the Code to satisfy his "Dark Passenger". And one of those could be Rita. Dexter should always be shown as being this close to kill Rita, but backing out by a hair's width because of an victim from the Code Of Harry.I think the show should never try to make us sympathetic to Dexter. Dexter should be like Dallas' JR, the villainous protagonist everybody loves to hate and always gets away with murder (pun intended), to our frustration and amusement.
-
Dexter, Trinity, the tourist killers, a drunk driver, whoeverer! Just please kill the anoying ingrateful bitch! Now i know why the other guy she used to be married beat her and took to drugs. I would took to drugs too if i was married to that cunt!
-
That the locals and the feds, and even Dexter to some extent, haven't really paid too much attention to Lundy and his theories about Trinity even with his credentials. The locals are too worried about the vacation killer and in his entire prestigious career he said no one really believed him that Trinity existed. With the death of Lundy and Deb shot and likely being hospitalized, it will rally the troops so to speak and they will start taking Trinity seriously, and Trinity will start becoming more of the focus of the season. Dex will, for the first time we've seen other than the nurse who was poisoning Harry, go after someone not only because they deserve it, but because they hurt one of the few people he truly considers close to him. In that way, and in respect to this season, the shootings that ended this ep. did change the game. As for thinking the vacation killer shot them, I doubt it. They wouldn't have made a big deal about Trinity being "found" and then bumping into Lundy (which was obviously to see how truly "found" he was) if it wasn't Trinity that shot them. I assumed what he took out of Lundy's pocket was the tape recorder he saw Lundy using earlier that day. Just my thoughts.
-
Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter had been dating since early into season 2 and were married about 6 months ago.
-
spoilers warnings for book and show ... the 2nd book is my favorite-- dont get me wrong, I loved the first one too, (hated the third) ... but the 2nd had a truly sick killer, one that in the show, both ideologically and visually, could have been the most sick, scarring and terrifying thing on tv in a long long time, if not ever.... and before the show went in these similar directions (albeit far less interestingly IMO), the 2nd book made some really bold moves with the characters (doakes), and the whole marriage plot is handled about twice as in the show .... although if anyone is actually paying attention season three was much like the second book, with the exception of prada ... south american wartime vet torture specialist killer, inadvertant/accidental marriage proposal, bachelor party abduction, and deborah's boyfriend and dexter are victims of the killer.... although the killer paled in comparison to the book's, IMO... but I was NOT fond of the second season of the show ... dexter's graveyard being found was an inevitability in my mind, at least the plot of him being the main suspect for a crime or series of crimes, so I was disappointed to see them tap that well so early in the series... seemed lazy. Plus the brunette woman was awful and almost all of dexter's actions with her are not supported by any intelligent, rational or plausible thought-process, the AA sub plot was awful and belies dexters intelligence as well... ugh and the ending for doakes was sloppy and poorly executed, a pathetic end to the season, and an awful reason to kill off the best chemistry and counterpoint for dexter in the show.
Oh and I saw last nights ending coming .. something abotu the photography and the way the trinity had seen him earlier in the episode, I knew he was gonna kill him, but I thought he'd bash in his skull like the third and final trinity victim is supposed to be.... -
thats not what capone meant or what wioll happen .... I missed the scenes from the next so I cant be sure, but trinity was stealing his wallet, and he shot deb too so it looks far more like a mugging than the trinity, thus the police wont lend any more credence to his theories, in my best guess ... but dexter probably will, and accordingly the show itself will focus more on it as well ... thats my guess
-
could very well be, although he seems very soft-spoken and sensitive to shoot her and him, and then have the presence of mind to make it look like a robbery....
-
I'd have to rewatch, but was the shooter wearing gloves when he reaches down and takes Lundy's wallet+watch?

Things that would help Herc enjoy this show more
by liesandpicturesofalsolies
-Every character is young and blandly attractive.
-Dexter actually spoke his quips aloud and every conversation with constructed by pithy nothings
-The show took place in high school. -
LUndy was hunting clues, and bumped into Trinity accidentally, which put him on Trinity's scope (he'd seen the paper). Trinity kills Lundy, almost kills Dex's sister. This ups the ante. As far as Rita being needy or whatever--what the hell do you expect? You think Dexter could attract and hold a woman without problems? That's pretty unrealistic. She's a hell of a lot healthier than HE is!
-
I am starting to rethink Trinity as the shooter. It makes sense that he wants Lundy out of the way. But Trinity has refined his technique and it bothers me that he would not assure the demise of both his victims.
Could it be Anton? I guess. But Anton does not strike me as the deadly violence type. I think it could be those non-descript scumbags of crime, the vacation killers or whatever their moniker is.
Great episode and it focuses Dexter on avenging his sister. And I have to say I did not see it coming. What a game changer. -
he is a serial killer and he has a process that he has to follow. He isn't just going to throw 30 yrs of work away to gun down lundy.
I still think it is the vacation killer but since deb got shot in the back it could be anton as the big swerve. -
Why would he be throwing it away ... If anything he's protecting it ... He was intentionally involving Lundy, thus the bumping and key dropping, to what end we dont know ... but Lithgow was playing that as overtly worried, even saying something like, "this was bound to happen", so clearly this was not his original plan, but something he's dealing with ... and what better way than kill Lundy ... not that I think its him, I have no idea anymore, hadnt even considered the vacation murderers, forgot all about them, but I'm feeling like there's too much uncertainty to even make an educated guess.... And AlienToast, I think I remember the hand was wearing motorcycle gloves, but I could be wrong
-
the person is wearing black leather gloves
-
who spends many of his nights out stalking and killing people. He's not exactly emotionally available, which is why she's constantly trying to get more out of him. Yeah, she's needy, but I hardly think that warrants her death. She's Dexter's heart, and without her he'd simply be a killer and nothing more. His relationship with her should not be easy, or there would be no conflict (and by the way most relationships aren't easy... even if you aren't a serial killer by night).
-

And without Rita, Dexter would have to look after the kids
by mattmanbegins
And he'd NEVER have time for any killin'. Unless you think he should just abandon the family altogether, and thus negate 3+ seasons of story?
-
maybe dexter should have raped her like she suggested twice
-
i mean how hard is it to realize that lundy and deb were obviously not shot by the trinity killer. the shooter shot and then robbed them. its a red herring. its just gonna be end being some random dude that shot them and robbed them and has no conection to trinity. but everyone will think lundy is right and will but dexter's attetion on trinity.
-
I agree. He's not as "code" driven as Dexter only in that he has to perform this specific set of killings/rituals every x amount of time. I would think that _anything_ that might prevent it would be dealt with as needed: including an FBI agent that's making progress. It hasn't been shown that he's playing games with the FBI (or Lundy specifically, you know, like HL), he's got his own internal set of conflicts.
I thought JL/TK the bumping into Lundy - obviously on purpose - really interesting (including conspicuously dropping the keys). Good stuff, and Lithgow is really making this role something special. I loved when he was prompting the dude outside the bar to beat him up (just like the scalding hot shower), punishing himself - though I'm not sure if he's doing it because he kills *or* because of something he did _not_ do originally (that triggered his behavior). Good stuff!
-
She was. She looked a little like a young Tiffany Minx :D
-
Anyone else get the not so subtle hint about the dripping faucet in Dexter's apartment? Will it overflow and flood the apartment and cause someone to find his stash of blood samples?
Trinity bumped Lundy to ensure that Lundy didn't recognize him. He thought he was found out and needed to know if Lundy showed recognition. It IS possible that he pickpocketed him, of course. -
more of that same theme, leaving things unattended and unfixed. He'll take Deb's shooting personally, probably one of the first things he's ever taken personally. He'll snap back to focus on Trinity, but the shooter will be someone else, probably the vacation killers
-
i don't get the hate. or the desire to have her killed so dexter can let loose. does everyone remember the code? what did harry tell dexter as a kid, fit in, pretend to be "normal" well the family is normal. even if she is bitchy he still needs in to keep him from getting caught, no one ever suspects the family man to be the one dismembering people. and i just caught up on all the episodes from this year, so far it's so much better than season 3.

I took the faucet to be a metaphor for Dexter's humanity.
by liesandpicturesofalsolies
It's starting to seep out. He's been having more and more little emotional outbursts. I might be stretching it but I think he's slowly beginning to realize, on a subconscious level, how dangerous his dark passenger is to his family. If hot murdercop has come in while his family was home, they could have been seriously hurt.
I hope the Deb/Lundy shooter is tied to Dexter somehow even though it doesn't make much sense. This season, Dexter's life seems to a B-plot and there doesn't seem to be much overall show drama about him except for his self-contained "How will Dexter get out of the poop this week?" That said this is the best John Lithgow I've ever seen. I was never a huge fan before but that dude is acting up a hurricane. -
I immediately thought of the twisted irony of the great serial killer hunters becoming victims to the other crime wave sweeping the season that they seemed to have forgotten. They took his watch after all.
-
What if Trinity is both "Trinity" and the vacation killers?
Lundy would never link seemingly random acts of killing/robbing to his serial killer, but one thing we know for sure is that the Vacation and Trinity killings began around the same time. We don't know the reasons for or the extent of Trinity's ritual, random acts of violence may play into his pattern somehow, and why not include the guy hunting you as a bonus? -
When I first read the TB, and the "game changer" I thought maybe Lundy and Trinity were paired up or something, which woulda been lame because how many serial killers can Deb have orbiting her before you stretch all bounds of believability?
I think it's the vacation killer, also. I think she would have been looking more at the killer if it was her bf (even if he had a mask, she'd at least consider it, maybe). -
Shame on Showtime for spoiling everything but the clip from next weeks episdoe with Trinity at the diner answers both questions about the shooting.
1) Deb survived and Lundy died
2) Trinity did it. Why? The reporter says "FBI agent murdered and miami police officer shot" and he gets upset, panicked. Why would this bother him if he didnt do it? How would he even know the "FBI agent" was HIS FBI agent had he not murdered him (stealing the wallet was obviously done for show). I would assume his anger came over the fact that he didnt kill deb. the news attributes it to the tourist killer though, probably to his delight -
he wanted to be caught & thought Lundy was the best chance of finally stopping him. (fingerprint @ suicide + bumping into Lundy) Series 4 is approaching awesome.
-
"The Bump" was to see if how far Lundy's investigation has gotten. When they looked at each other, Trinity was checking Lundy's eyes for any recognition. The "Key Drop" was to give Lundy a second look in case his mind was initially distracted. It was that second look that stuck with Lundy. Then again, there's also the tried & true theory that serial killers really want to get caught and this might've been Trinity's way to push Lundy in the right direction. Come to think of it, after his second kill, Trinity DID wipe some of those ashes next to the body. I hope he wasn't the shooter because it would be dumb to set the guy up as the most methodical killer ever only to have him chance leaving a clue with a shooting. My vote is the Vacation Killer. The ONE thing that I sincerely hope the writers have NOT done is have this season's "shocker" be that Trinity is Dexter's relative. As far as the family: if pets start disappearing in the neighborhood it'd be one of the best things to happen to the show (I mean, seriously, how many serial killers can Miami have year after year??)
-
It's like the Cloverfield trailer... when so many were saying "Its a lion" and you're going... What? It's clearly "It's alive!".
Some people just don't see/hear the obvious, I guess. -
my bad
-
Honestly, I also thought Trinity shot them and I still think that. But if we go the route that maybe the Vacation killer is the one that shot them, then maybe Anton is the Vacation Killer. Has that been suggested? Dude goes on boats with his "band" and what not. Now hes home for good and more killings start happening. Just a thought. I mean that would suck for her because that means everyone who enters her life is crazy
-
think this is part of Trinity's compulsive ritual and he has no choice. I think Trinity is recreating the past tragedy of his sister and mother committing suicide and then Trinity confronting the man Trinity felt pushed them to it.
He wasn't really talking to the drunk in the ally when he said "It's your fault." I think, when the first real tragedy occurred, he confronted the real person he held responsible for the other two original deaths and got beat up. He may not have been able to kill this abusor in real life, maybe he was just a child. So now he recreates it all and this time he kills the 'bad guy". Or even if he did kill the original evil father figure, Trinity is so damaged inside he has to kill "father" again and again for the rest of his life.
The same imaginary person Trinity toasted and said "Drink up, your next" is the same person he was fighting in his mind in that ally, telling them "It's your fault."
In the original three murders that created Trinity, I imagine he confronted the evil father figure and got his ass kicked, just like he did in the ally. He was looking to get his ass kicked a part of his ceremony, his recreation of the original tragedy. Now comes the revenge. The two previous "suicides" combined with him getting beaten justifies the third murder in the cycle.

...it's the only way to bring Dexter to bear on him now that Lundy is dead. It's necessary for the story, so there can be no one else behind it. Anton is not a killer and the vacation killer will be next week's red herring (I assume, I don't watch previews).
I wasn't surprised to see Lundy bite it, but I was always hoping they'd keep him around for the Dexter manhunt. I worry more and more that this show won't ever go there. This show will be a failure in the end if they never show everyone's reactions to what he is. And Lundy could have played a critical role when that time came. -
not trinity.. thats my guess
-
Maybe only one is a serial killer.
-
Sometimes I go with Trinity being the shooter. The article that tipped him off to Lundy, also mentioned the vacation killer case and how resources were being moved AWAY from that case to investigate Trinity. So killing Lundy and making it look like the vacation murders (which have been on hiatus it would seem) would renew interest in that case and stop the serial killer investigation. Also, I'm pretty sure they were called the vacation murders because only tourists were being killed.
However, it would seem to me that Lundy would have been the perfect final victim for Trinity and that Trinity would want to toy with him for a while the way Dexter toys with his victims. So having Lundy, his potential final victim, be killed BEFORE he could do anything, could be what sets him off an angers him when he reads the story.
The question is, which is the red herring? Is it the Trinity killer made to appear like the vacation killer, or is the show trying to make the vacation killer seem like Trinity? -
It seems pretty clear that Trinity's murders (only ever three) is him reproducing some family trauma her suffered through. A young woman's suicide, a mother of two's suicide, and the bludgeoning of a father or two? Plus he rubbed his mothers ashes on the scene of the second killing. So I think that is saying that Trinity's mother jumped off a building, his sister killed herself in the tub and then Trinity murdered (or wanted to murder) his own father.
-
bumping into lundy, dropping the keys was done to satisfy his MO for the 3rd kill. he knew he was made, so he had to off Lundy. so he improvised by initiating the encounter with lundy. so the question is: how was the lundy encounter similar to the bar alley confrontation, and obviously it's not as simple as getting the guy to attack him, but it was about provoking a type of response, one that getting lundy to pick up the keys elicited. The only thing that I can think of is that it made lundy take off his shades, so they looked at each other in the eyes. probably not part of the MO. god, this is really irking me not knowing.
-
Lundy doesn't fit the MO for Trinity's 3rd kill: The person has to be a father of 2 (no doubt to represent his own father). AFAIK, Lundy didn't have 2 kids, so Lundy cannot be the 3rd kill. I don't think Trinity is the shooter. Lundy's expression wasn't just one of shock, it was one of shocked acknowledgement. They were -VERY- careful not to show us the shooter or their skin (which could tell us things like age, race, gender, etc). The preview then goes into Dexter thinking Trinity did it (or Harry suggesting he may have done it). I can almost %100 guarantee that he didn't do it...especially if you read some of the vague TV-Guide episode summaries for the next few episodes, which don't actually say anything to the outright dismiss it, but the context of what the characters are doing almost suggests it. I think Dexter will meet Trinity and Trinity will tell him he didn't shoot Deb/Lundy. Trinity will talk about losing his family and they will both relate their daddy issues to eachother. Dexter will no doubt draw comparissons (lost mother+sibling and an evil biological father), but Dexter will probably come to realize that Trinity didn't have a figure like Harry in his life and thus why he is trapped. Think about Ice Truck. Ice Truck was basically killing based on his past trauma re: the loss of his mother. He was never able to progress past that. Dexter was too young to remember at first, but Dexter had the advantage of a supporting and loving father figure which helped Dexter avoid the "trapped in my suffering" kill mode that Trinity and Ice Truck were stuck in. I think this will give Dexter a deeper appreciation of what Harry did for him and he will come to understand that he wasn't made into a monster by Harry, but rather he was somehow dimished in terms of how monsterous he could truely be. I think Trinity, in a way, wanted Lundy to catch him...after 30 years of reliving the same things over and over, he wants some manner of forceful intervention. I think Dexter will ultimately deliver that intervention in his own particular style after Dexter learns what he needs to learn from Trinity. I also think Deb will find out about the Ice Truck Killer/Dexter connection finally and she will flash back to the finale of S1 and realize that Dexter chose her over his biological brother, which will help give her some acceptance of the fact that regardless how messed up Dexter might be, he will still protect those he cares about.
-
I think they were just trying to get viewers to wonder if it was Trinity or a jealous Anton that shot Lundy and Deb. The irony would be that Lundy has spent all his time looking for Trinity, came face to face with him without knowing, and then ended up getting killed by some hack robbers, the vacation killers. Also, Deb was supposed to be spending all of her time on the vacation killer crimes, but was being distracted by the Trinity case, and then ended up being shot by someone involved in her case that she might have already found if she wasn't so occupied with Lundy and his case. Trinity doesn't want to be caught, but probably wouldn't go as far as to kill Lundy because he seems to have a very specific plan in doing what he does. I'm not sure if he would actually kill someone outside of his plan, even if it meant his capture.
-
When I saw the Lundy and Morgan shootings go down the Trinity Killer did not come to mind. But then the promos draws you into that conclusion.
Could Trinity have done it? Sure, why not? The guy is a stone killer who may have been forced to break his pattern out of self-preservation, not unlike what Dexter did some seasons ago. It is tempting but I do not think I can buy it.
I like your point, Alientoast, that Lundy saw or understood something before he died. Was it Anton? Maybe he turned bad after being tortured and/or jealousy is one of the oldest motives there is, but I am not ready to buy that theory just yet. The Vacation Murderers fill the bill, but for the look on Lundy's face and that those two are almost too easy a pick.
I have to hand it to Team Dexter, this sure is an intriguing turn of events. I am looking forward to seeing how this plays out over the balance of the season. -
Lundy was a truly amazing character and i really really hate to see him go even more so than James in season 2. LAME! yet it is a incredibly compelling move. also wanted to point out that I believe dexter killed the cop in her own house (in the room he said his daughter would love)
-
I mean first off we have seen nothing, nothing, in his character whatsoever that would point to him being a crazed impulse heat of passion killer. It would also stretch imagination to have 2 of Deb's last 3 boyfriends be murderers. I would think they would have given us some bait if it was Anton, some sign of his rage of jealousy (there was a twinge of jealousy in that episode but nothing even close to showing anger). And, again, I still dont see why Trinity would get so upset about the nameless news flash in the scene from next week if he didnt know exactly who was shot. Makes much more sense that he was upset cause he didnt finish the job and Deb lived. Finally, if its this Tourist killer, I think thats equally lame, I mean, wow what a coincidence he just happens to kill two serial killer hunters, which is completely out of his MO (even though I do believe all his kills come at hotels and Lundy was staying in a hotel).
-
when dex was stuffed in the trunk - its not what we think it is.
-
fuh realz
-
...I hadn't considered the reporter, but that's so insanely out of left field it could just work! The hints are there: Desperate reporter becomes killer in order to generate headlines for herself. After Quinn dumps her, she shoots Lundy and Deb.
-
The shooter wasn't Trinity. Watching the promo scenes seems to indicate that Trinity is VERY particular about order. I think that when he says "You did it wrong" to the waitress, forcing her to start all over again, meant that he needed to start all over again, because he was surprised that Lundy was killed. His ritual was interrupted by Lundy's premature murder, as he was the one who should have done it.
-
Trinity will be revealed as the shooter of Lundy and Deb, but because he has killed someone outside his usual "ritual" he will be forced to start again with another girl in the bathtub.(See the showtime clip where Trinity goes off on the waitress and makes her start over a new omelette because the first is made wrong). Dexter will get the pattern(and no one else will since Lundy is dead and Deb is hospitalized). Dexter will thwart him during the forced suicide, saving the victim and putting himself in Trinity's crosshairs. This will force a "killer-off" where they will have to try and outmaneuver each other for the last 3 episodes or so. Deb will find out Dexter's secret in the process. He will likely say something incriminating while he thinks she in unconscious in the hospital, but it will turn out she isn't completely out of it.
Next season Rita will be more bitchy. She loses all respect for Dexter, because he doesn't treat her like shit, so she goes out and cheats on him with someone who she does respect (and who treats her like shit). She's that kind of damaged. -
he clearly knew there was something off about the guy. That's why he started describing him in the dictaphone.
THAT'S what Lundy is reacting to when he sees the shooter. He puts it all together and realises he exchanged words with Trinity.
The only reason the viewer is left in doubt, is because the camera was in Debs position, and the viewer was supposed to realise that Deb saw nothing of interest about the killer. She can't identify him.
Honestly, all this "Is it Anton?" "I bet it wasn't Trinity" is just ridiculous.
@Nerdator, I think you're right that Trinity will have to do another bath killing and start all over again. -
We knew that he had on all along, but now Dexter knows it too. No longer will he need to question his missing emotions after his little breakthrough. He's no longer a psycho-killer - he's just a killer.Good for Dex.
-
Only joking:) Of course it was Trinity. Dexter might be the Tin Man, but some people round here are more like the Straw Man!
-
Anton is not a murderer. He'd be hurt over losing Deb, but then he'd move on. Plus that would just muddle this season's story. Dexter doesn't go after people who commit crimes of passion. And Debs story gets more interesting, since how do you go back to Anton, when you already moved on to Lundy in your heart?
I love this show, but it's always been rather obvious. It was no great surprise that Rudy was the ice truck killer and there's no great surprise that Trinity was behind this. Again, it's the only way to move the story forward. And I'm not positive, but I think I remember Lundy commenting on his two kids during his first season (not that it would necessarily matter). -
And didn't Deb freak out a bit over that? Or am I completely misremembering?
-
Lundy has detected a pattern to Trinity's killing. That doesn't mean Trinity doesn't or wouldn't kill outside the pattern, especially if it is a matter of his survival. Goodness sakes, Lundy could even be WRONG about the pattern...although he probably isn't, this being fiction with all the loose ends needing to be neatly tied up.
-
If the 30 year old murders were the first for Trinity, then shouldn't somebody be looking for a connection between the victims from 30 years ago?
