Who is up for the role of Sinestro in GREEN LANTERN? Someone Perfect!

Hey folks, Harry here with the most awesome - pretty reliable - rumor of the day. I'm putting this in the caveat as a rumor - as opposed to a rock solid, take it to the bank story. Right now, Martin Campbell is in the process of finalizing the rest of the cast for GREEN LANTERN to surround Ryan Reynolds with. And I'm not sure why, but I've just hit the point where I'm giddy and hopeful about a GREEN LANTERN movie. This story came from someone working on the film. That part is solid, what isn't - and won't be till it all gets finalized is the fact that JACKIE EARLE HALEY is leading the list to play SINESTRO!!! That's just about perfect in my book! Something that makes me absolutely giddy as all hell! Oh... and according to my source, it's looking like SUPERMAN will be making a cameo, but that all depends upon how... other DC things go, but it is an indicator that DC is paying attention and taking note of what MARVEL is doing, which has excited all of us so much! But remember, you heard it all here first!

He'll have to turn everything upside down

    by The Chosen

He's been playing quite some similar characters. Temper guided, crazy, impulsive, or reclusive. I pictured Sinestro as an calculating, almost LawfulEvillian character. If he goes through with it, i think he'll be in for some serious changes in his character perspetives.

    Ryan Reynolds

    by ZooTrain

I have faith in Ryan Reynolds. Just like I had faith in Robert Downey, Jr. Just like I had faith in Michael Keaton. I think the guy has a talent that he hasn't really been able to put to use yet.

    Love JEH, but...

    by Julius Dithers

Jackie Earle Haley=Ther "Christian Bale" of comic book badguys

    by Playkins

Seriously, if there's a psychotic comic-book character, seems Haley is first on everyone's list these days. Not that he shouldn't be, he's tremendously talented, just hope he isn't typecast in his re-found fame.

  • Oct. 16, 2009, 11:51 p.m. CST

Haley was the best part of WATCHMEN

    by YackBacker

The guy brings it. I am pretty happy to be reading this information. Sure, a guy like Hugo Weaving would have been the more obvious choice, but Haley can play this part just as well, maybe even better to be honest. <p> I am actually pretty indifferent to Superman showing up. Unless this is going to be the actor they intend to use in other Superman movies moving forward, I don't see it being of any consequence to the DC movie universe.

  • Oct. 16, 2009, 11:52 p.m. CST

And no chance Daniel Day Lewis does this movie

    by YackBacker

Sure, he'd be the perfect ANYTHING- Batman, Lex Luthor, Sinestro, Wonder Woman- you name it! But the guy is acting royalty, he'd never make a genre pic at this point.

    Jackie is kinda short

    by donduck

There's a picture of him and the 6'1 Paul Dano together, and the 5'5 Jackie barley reaches his shoulders. They can do lifts, but even then that would make him..5'8ish.

  • Oct. 17, 2009, 12:16 a.m. CST

  • Oct. 17, 2009, 12:20 a.m. CST

    jackie again?

    by CrashPanda

he could definitely pull off sinestro's intensity, but he's like a foot shorter than reynolds. unless they do some camera tricks it could just look awkward. the whole superman thing is questionable. if there's a reboot wouldn't they want someone else as superman? would they cast the new superman in gl or bring routh in only to replace him in the next superman movie? sounds crazy.

    More Shakespearean

    by DannyOcean01

Is what you want. A Basil Rathbone type. This feels more go to Hayley, than anyone really thinking about who the character is. I think the reason they haven't picked an actor from say, the stage, is because it'd just show up how much better Reynolds would be in the Rayner role.

  • Oct. 17, 2009, 12:41 a.m. CST

I always saw Sinestro as British

  • Oct. 17, 2009, 2:12 a.m. CST

Haley as Sinestro is as bad as Campbell as director.

    by Professor_Monster

Campbell is a traditional director - the kind who doesn't take things too far and for once - we have a property that is asking for just that. Giant boxing gloves, tanks, walls of green steel - we needed one of those extreme directors on this one to make it fun - if CGI ever had a movie to shine in it should be Green Lantern - Campbell's directing is fine - I have nothing against him, but he wrong for particular hero. He makes movies that you'll see - hell you might even buy them on dvd, but they will remain on your shelf in package because something else has already gotten your attention - he's not that hard to top. And this whole Kelly Leek as every bad guy craze that's sweeping the nation - look, I like him too - but he's going to wear thin real fast - if he already hasn't. I so wish Malkovich (I know it's spelled wrong but I'm tired) was in the lead - it sends a signal that this IS a real film - unlike Watchman. We need someone with credibility to elevate the talking head scenes and make them as powerful as the fighting (might) be. I'll still see it - but if that plastic stick Routh is brought back as Superman - forget it. i can't believe there are those who still think he did a good job. I'd give him first prize in a Chris Reeve look alike contest, but Superman - nope, no way. He sucked - like a cover band.

    by StarchildAD

He is a perfect choice. Recast Batman!!!!!! DDL for Bruce Wayne! You know it all in your fucking hearts. Also when I read the news story I instantly had Ben Kingsleys head flash inside my thoughts... But Jackie oozes the charisma it will take to pull of Sinestro... as long as the dialogue is sick, we are in good hands my friends. Good strong man hands... that belong to... DDL as the BAT!

    Bad Idea

    by cenobiteme

    I second BETTANY!

    by MR. MURDOCH

Haley is wrong, wrong WRONG for this part. AGREED on Paul Bettany -- this dude has ALWAYS been one of my favorites since he emerged some years back -- and it's not just because he gets to bone Jennifer Connelly, aka Goddess Among Women. Bettany's a natural talent who should, by all rights, be much, MUCH more popular/well-regarded than he is, and headlining better movies than LEGION. I'd go with Bettany, Malkovich, or Weaving (though he's cliche by now) over Haley, if I were the casting director or Campbell. SOLD on Martin Campbell -- CASINO ROYALE truly impressed me, and EDGE OF DARKNESS looks equally strong. This guy is a truly great director who is only getting better, in my opinion. Let's just hope he stays on the picture! Reynolds is A-OK, not my first choice, but will probably work. The rumor about Rose Byrne as the female lead sounds perfect as well -- another should-be-a-star-by-now. Haley is the first nail in this table that I'm really not sold on. But hey, I predicted doom and gloom for Craig as Bond, but look at what Campbell delivered in CASINO? Sometimes off-beat casting does work...

JEH was the only non terrible part about Watchmen

    by liesandpicturesofalsolies

It looks like his appearance in this will create a "Jackie Earl Hartley is the only non shitty aspect" double feature. I actually imagine this will be much better than Green Lantern but Ryan Reynolds? I sort of liked him as Berg in Two Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place but his acting style remains the same. The guy is wooden and has no range (which may be redundant). Blade 3 has already proved that he is a terrible action star. Kyle Chandler is the first name that pops into my head as a good replacement but no way that guy ever gets offered a blockbuster lead.

  • Oct. 17, 2009, 3:04 a.m. CST

Also glad to see Routh love in this thread.

    by liesandpicturesofalsolies

I think he just got saddled with a terrible script. The guy was born to play Superman.

  • Oct. 17, 2009, 3:06 a.m. CST

    by KubrickFan69

I don't know about the whole Lantern affair, it could go either way but I hate Reynolds. I can't shake Van Wilder from my memory, when he appeared in Blade 3 I was like Oh look Van Wilder, when he appeared in Wolverine..I thought Oh Look Van Wilder is back.. I do like Haley coming on board and Campbell is a strong filmmaker when he wants to be so who knows... I'm staying slightly optimistic but at the same time fearful of Van Wilder in green tights..

sinestro isn't the villain in this movie, i'm happy. i don't think a big villain should be in an origin movie. origin movies are usually (and should be) about half origin, half villain while other movies work well as more villain. sinestro deserves a movie all to himself as a villain. i like the idea of hector hammond being a villain in this first one

Re: Supes -- Routh won't be back.

    by MR. MURDOCH

You heard it here first...or last. Well, I think it's rather obvious at this point, to all but the most devout-Routh fanboys and girls (and really, how many of those are there, like, 12?) that he won't be suiting up in that getup 'no more. Perhaps not entirely his fault, but he was weak enough that he's definitely not remembered very "fondly" because the movie was such a cluster-f...heck, even Mr. TW won't be very fondly remembered in the grand scheme of things, but I'd venture to say that his legacy as Kal-El will surpass Routh's in the long run by quite a already has, time-wise, literally. Next Supes = Bigger Name, with No "Legacy" to Uphold (i.e. No Donner-isms).

  • Oct. 17, 2009, 3:26 a.m. CST

Okay maybe born to play Superman was a tad hyperbolic.

  • Oct. 17, 2009, 4:52 a.m. CST

    Routh was an OK Superman....

    by BacardiRocky

....but a terrible Clark Kent. Clark is just as important to Kal-El's earth identity as Superman ever was. That's the thing that Christopher Reeve nailed perfectly. You believed he was a bumbling, nervous, clumsy fool, yet at the same time with the removal of his glasses he transformed into the Man of Steel we all know and loved. Routh could never get the Clark side of his character right. Perhaps it was the script. Like I said, I do think he was an OK Superman. Just a poor Clark. As far as Jackie Earl Haley playing Sinestro, i dunno about that one. He is an excellent actor, but I just don't see Sinestro when I see him. I think he would be better suited to play one of those blue big headed "Guardians of the Universe" instead. I would have picked Jude Law instead. Just slap a mustache on him.

    NO SUPERMAN IN GL!?!?!?!

    by Pitofbenders

Why the hell is this happening? Superman isn't in the origin story for GL, so why the fuck is he being put in this? That makes no fucking sense. And as much as I love JEH, which he WAS the BEST part of Watchmen, I don't really see him as a good Sinestro. I was ALL on board for Ledger for Joker right off the bat. I was the only one of my friends who was confident that he would be killer for the part, but I don't see JEH as Sinestro. There are plenty of other actors who could do it more justice. Jeremy Irons for one, or as many have said, Daniel Day Lewis. But that's just my opinion....

    by Kevin Holsinger

What's Sinestro's personality supposed to be like? My main exposure to him was Sinestro Corps War, where he started as a villain who thought he was doing the right thing (like Ozymandias in Watchmen), then quickly changed into a cartoonish villain talking about "FEAR!" as much as Batman's Scarecrow.<p>I only ask because I wouldn't know what actor is supposed to play him until I know how he's supposed to behave.<p>My thanks in advance.

JeH is already signed on for sinestro, WB is waiting until other casting is official before they issue a press release. (there's going to be some other interesting casting) <P>And Yes in the script I read, superman does make an important cameo<P>Martin is interested in casting Branden Routh however WB is trying to figure out what is going on with the superman franchise before they OK the casting (Some at WB are thinking this cameo could be a way to jump start a new superman franchise with a different actor, while others are confident the singer helmed/Routh staring superman returns is the only superman movie we'll see for a long time, so might as well used the established continiuity)

    Not bad

    by nostairway

But they really should get someone taller. I've been impressed so far with what Martin Campbell has done in his career and can only hope he can make a movie that is true to the comic and can still attract casual viewers. It can't be an easy task though.

  • Oct. 17, 2009, 8:40 a.m. CST

There is only one solid reason for Superman in this movie.

    by ButterNipples

And that happens to be that the darker directions WB wants to take their DC Comics adaptations in is actually happening. Origin or not, Sinestro always had ties in the comics to the criminal underworld of the galaxy. Mongol would be one of them. If this geek fever dreams comes true, Martin Campbell, the unlikeliest of directors to helm a superhero movie is being chosen like Jon Favereau was for Iron Man. To launch an ensemble movie in the future. Death and Return of Superman-->Reign of the Supermen--> Emerald Dawn/Twilight--->Zero Hour-->JLA anyone? Sounds like a decent start. Especially if they can find a way to integrate Chris Nolan's universe or a reasonable facsimile with the Superman Recast/reboot. But then again, this IS Hollyphail. They don't care about the movie we want to see. They only care about the grander scale of appeal. But then again, never heard of a a summer superhero movie getting repeat viewing from the dating populace, only the fans who embrace it or damn it. Too bad they don't do demographics on box office sales...

  • Oct. 17, 2009, 8:44 a.m. CST

    Oh and as for JEH...

    by ButterNipples

He was great as Rorschach. But that only worked because of the persona being close to that of a disgruntled and tormented soul, similar to that of a recent revived child actor... Blame Walter Mathau for giving him the beer.

    Jackie's the bomb and all . . .

    by Nice Marmot

. . . but I can't get excited for him as Sinestro. I also always pictured a smarmy thesp-type in the role. Doesn't help that I'm still not over Jackie's lame cash-in with taking the retarded Elm Street part.

    John Hamm

    by Retlaw Kciuq

Would make a great Superman, perhaps surpassing Reeve as the greatest... I said it, I think it's true. I really like what Routh did but Singer cast purely on how incredibly sexy the guy was instead of an actual follow up like he was shooting for. Hamm would have been the best successor for the SR follow up as he would have been adult for it and carried the film a bit more strongly.

Jackie did a nice job in Watchmen and I'm sure he'll be a great Freddy but dial it back Harry. When I clicked your headline I thought it was going to be an A-lister like Brad Pitt. I heard they are remaking Star Wars maybe Jackie could play Luke Skywalker, Jaws 5 is finally getting off the ground how about Jackie as the shark? He's certaintly on a short list for Kahn in Star Trek 2 I hope. How about Ryan Reynold's ex wife in the new Doubtfire "reimagining". Your a tool Harry, settle down.

Welling as Superman in a GL movie? That is truly inspired. I wonder if they'd go for it. As far as Routh, I think he did fine for the materiel he had to work with. Clark Kent does need to be updated, though, ala Smallville. He doesn't need to be a dork. I'd be happy with any Superman cameo as long as it was respectful to the character.

Okay, flavor of the year then?

    by adiehardfanwithalethalweapon

He was a nobody a year or two ago. He has a career because a single role made some box and now they want a piece. He's not a leading man type so it's borrowed time anyway. Despite the fact he's a great actor it doesn't always work the way you suggest. A flop or two and we'll be trying to remember that guys name who played Rorschach. I'll give you this . . . it might be more appropriately said as flavor or the year. ;)

    This should work

    by Turd Furgeson

Campbell will deal with the hieght difference (Reynolds is 6'3"). Both good actors. The only thing that worries me is GL outshining Supes, depending on the size of the cameo. Reynolds is a huge presence on screen, and Routh's Supes was a little more soft than Reeves. Routh was probably directed to play supes that way so I am not going to fault him. Singer F-ed up Supes in EVERY WAY POSSIBLE. If Routh can play supes strong, with conviction, I am all for him coming back. Also, I know he's big too, but he needs to put on some more bulk, about 20lbs. This movie should be fun.

People mistakenly believe Sinestro was based on Niven

    by LyingFuckingBastard

The truth however is that he was based on President Truman. It was only later when people began to point out the similarity in appearance between Niven and Sinestro that there was a backtracking to hide the fact that he looked nothing like Truman despite that being the aim.

    Supermans Cameo!

    by ComicGuru

No one has mentioned that the only reason they are pushing him into this film is so that they can have Supeman feature in a movie so they can maintain their movie rights. Remember if Superman is not used in a movie before 2011 then they lose the motion picture rights for the character back to the siegel and shuster estates. This way will save them millions on a film that could flop at the box office and can only help Green Lanterns chances. (At least in their mind.) Sinestro probably would have been better played by Tim Dalton in his younger days or possibly David Tennant now. As much as I like Jackie Earl Haley I don't think he's right for the part. Thats my two cents for what its worth.

My First Thought Was Jeremy Irons & Superman Cameo

    by nexxus7

Maybe 10 years ago Irons would have been absolutely perfect. Not sure what he's up to these days. I really hope they don't cast "little people" for the guardians. They are not midgets, they are small, finely boned species with large heads. I hope the director stays true to that morphology and tries to do them with live actors in post production image manipulation (see Burton's upcoming Alice in Wonderland). As far as a Superman cameo that would be a perfect chance to test a different approach. It's possible that Routh might have worked in that role, I don't know. But the costume, makeup and direction were so horrible he took the brunt. So if they cast him for the cameo, fine. He's a couple years older now, and if the movie has better art direction and costuming, Routh might get a shot at redemption, and Singer would be further exposed for being in way over his head and responsible for a colossal screw up of a flick.

JEH as Sinestro, CGI and Costumes

    by nexxus7

As long as the director is testing his read and makeup then I'm sure it is in keeping with that vision. Actually I never thought of Sinestro as a particularly tall character. He's been drawn a few different ways, but as I remember from arelier, he was thin (not necessarily tall), beet red/purplish skin, and with a slightly elongated head and a receding hairline. Also, JEH may be this generation's Ron Perleman. RP is a fantastic makeup actor, check out some of his looks from Quest for Fire, Beauty and the Beast, The Name of the Rose, Blade II and of course, Hellboy. CGI is going to make or break the look of the ring constructs (not to mention some of the more radical alien species). I hope they put WETA or ILM on it, rather than going with some of the smaller and cheaper houses thinking it's just gonna be green and yellow shapes. The CGI will determine the overall look of this movie, and a chance to create a true comic universe. As far as costumes, look at Iron Man, Spiderman and the original Superman to realize that comic accurate costumes can equal blockbuster.

    Some Sinestro suggestions are inspired

    by maelstrom_ZERO

<p>Some people have mentioned Hugh Laurie, Jeff Goldblum, Hugo Weaving, and Daniel Day Lewis. . .all of which I can totally see playing Sinestro. Sinestro's supposed to be an egotistical, arrogant prick who deserves every bit of respect for the genius he's admired for, but always expects more. And certainly all the aforementioned actors have played similar roles in the past with high degrees of success. Especially Hugh Laurie.</p> <p>Even though I don't really approve of Jackie Earle Haley as Sinestro, he's earned the goodwill he gets from his fantastic work in Watchmen. I'm interested to see what he'll bring to the role. I just hope he maintains the version of Sinestro that we've seen in the recent Geoff Johns' run, with the Sinestro Corps War.</p>

    Martin Campbell = Brett Ratner

    by spud mcspud

He's a safe pair of hands who will deliver the goods, but nothing more. Look at his CV... VERTICAL LIMIT, GOLDENEYE, CASINO ROYALE, BEYOND BORDERS, NO ESCAPE, both Banderas ZORRO movies...<P> He's not done ANYTHING spectacular, nothing that marks his career out. In fact, Brett Ratner WISHES he was Martin Campbell - at least Campbell doesn't have the fucking risible RUSH HOUR 3 on his resume (I liked the first two RUSH HOURS, and so did you, haters) - but I'm not getting psyched over this movie. It's not like putting Chris Nolan in the seat for a BATMAN reboot- which, while not entirely successful (BEGINS had a fucking terrible Act III, and the most boring chase scenes in any Batman movie EVER - while TDK had a pointless villain in Two-Face, who you could have not bothered with and STILL had a great movie).<P> Prove me wrong, Martin. Give us a kick-ass movie for once!!

Give Welling a go as The Big Blue Boy Scout!

    by spud mcspud

Let's face it, at least he has charisma to go with the dreamy good looks - unlike Routh, who was not only plain looking but fuck-boring to boot. And which fucking genius thought it'd be a great idea to have the third act of SUPERMAN RETURNS feature an unconscious Superman, flown away in a fucking light aircraft by his fluffy white-bread love rival (the couldn't-be-wetter James Marsden) while he's chased BY A FUCKING BIG WAVE.<P> I've changed my mind. For a film lovers' site, you guys sure know bugger-all about moviemaking! <p> <p> As for Welling being an "inspired" choice, look up a dictionary (or just bloody highlight the damn word you typed & right-click the dictionary link, lazybones). It's exactly the OPPOSITE of inspired. That's about as uncreative and predictable as it gets. And as for charisma, I know this is just my subjective opinion, but the reason I stopped watching was because the guy's a charisma vacuum. I mean, Nathan Fillion for Han Solo is also spectacularly uncreative and redundant as he played the poor-man's version already (so therefore typical on-the-nose TBer casting), but at least the guy has a personality. <p> Now, John Waters (as someone mentioned up there) - that's SO damn inspired it MAKES the choice seem obvious! ;)

Remember how badly WB got burned on SUPERMAN RETURNS? Remember how nobody went to see any DC hero movie or show except DARK KNIGHT? Remember how the economy is causing project after project (like the adorementioned "never gonna happen" JUSTICE LEAGUE) to be shut down due to lack fo fiancing? Remember how this was going to be filmed in Australia but got cancelled because of the weak dollar? Remember? This is a guaranteed cancelled project. The character isn't well-known enough. If you really take the work he's done into the abstract - IE, just look at his acting seperated from the source material, just taking him as he is - he's a pretty damn good actor, very believable even in outrageous movies. He's good. He's also woefully underrated. "Superman Returns" sucked and Routh was a terrible Superman. He's like a guy -pretending- to be Superman in a lame costume they designed for him. He looks like a swimmer. There's no sense of awe when you look at him, he has no presence. Superman has to have presence. Especially if they're looking to do a Justice League movie eventually. Honestly, put Tom Welling in the suit. See what it's like. He's already big. If they ripped him up, he'd be Superman level awe-inspiring. Tom Welling's got the Superman presence. Let him play his real age, and bulk him up. Ignore everything from "Smallville," but use Welling. His -is- Superman. He's got the face for it.

    DC entertainment needs to realize

    by MariusXe

the rich possibilitys they have in front of them, but it seems like they still don't get it. The Losers, Jonah Hex, Lobo... and no Flash (wich could easy be DC's answer to Spider-man in terms of success and money milking), no Teen Titans, no new Superman, no Wonder Woman, no plans for Justice League. WTF??? I mean I'm really one of the biggest DC Fans ever (almost collecting everything DC is putting out in trades) but I cannot understand that they don't have their priorities in order. Why bring out the second tier storys and characters when you could do the same with the big guns??? And please, they have to take a page from marvels playbook and start to interlink the movies at least a little bit. I mean a short Bruce wayne cameo in Superman Returns or a short Clark Kent Cameo in the next Batman would do the trick. If they really bring Supes into GL I couldn't be happier! Still very unsure about the GL Movie. I love Green Lantern, but to make this movie work they would have to be extremely faithfull to the sourcematerial. I want to see Oa, kilowog, Mogo (even if hes just in a background shot in space) and I want it to play at least 50% in space. haley as Sinestro is interesting, if not my first choice.

  • Oct. 18, 2009, 7:15 a.m. CST

Oh and by the way... Robin in Batman 3!

    by MariusXe

They should get Robin in the next Batman. They could bring him in only as Dick Grayson in the third one and in the fourth (maybe with a new batman and new director) as robin. Than they could make a Teen titans spin off with that actor playing robin and a few years later he would be old enough to get his own nightwing movie. if done right, with the right actor, the money making possibilities are endless!!! They just have to bind the kid to the franchise like they did with the Harry Potter kids.

I am not sold on Ryan Reynolds as Hal...nothing in his prior work would even allow me to think he could handle it seriously. As for Jeckie- good actor, definitely talented- but he is not Sinestro. Sinestro needs to be the best of the best in the GL Corps. I just cannot see it physically. It is ANYTHING but perfect casting. Its actually piss poor casting. I only hope I am proven wrong.

  • Oct. 18, 2009, 1:53 p.m. CST

Gil Kane based Sinestro on David Niven. The height of urbane sophistication and refined sensibilities. When I think of the modern day equivalent of that, I do NOT think of JEH. Never in a million years. Okay, so people liked him as Rorschach. But don't cast him for everything.

    Sinestro is a fallen hero

    by jocutus

I think Sinestro is best when portayed as the Vic Mackey styled tough cop trying do do things his own way, going to far beyond the law instead of straight-up evil villain. With that sort of portrayal you need an actor who could just as easily play the hero of the piece. That's what I liked about the DC animated GL video, Sinestro was more like Denzel in "Training Day" and not a direct super-criminal. With this choice it seems like they're going with more straight-up villain. We'll see.

  • Oct. 18, 2009, 3:22 p.m. CST

Welling should cross over into the SUperman film department. WHile I will agree his acting the first 3 or 4 seasons was average at best, he really has come into the role the past couple seasons. I would be more than happy to see a Welling cameo in GL. As for Routh, sorry, his contract ended and he will not be returning, thank God. Perfect casting for Sinestro? Stephen Colbert

    by daggor

And I'm not trying to be funny. He'd be great.

  • Oct. 18, 2009, 9:59 p.m. CST

    by maelstrom_ZERO

<p>The problem with casting well-known comedians in dramatic roles is that you always end up waiting for them to deliver some kind of punchline. When I watched Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, or Will Farrell in Stranger than Fiction, I always expected them to suddenly break character and act funny, which took me out of the movie. Not that they were bad in their respective roles (they were quite good, actually), but it's just disconcerting watching them play serious dramatic roles.</p> <p>So when you say that Stephen Colbert would make a decent Sinestro. . .I would actually agree with you. But it'd probably be pretty distracting watching Colbert pull off a serious role like that.</p>

Why are fanboys so hell bent on casting Hugo Weaving as Sinestro? The guy is completly typed cast it's not even funny. It is as if poeple like seeing him play the same character over and over. WTF! Was Brandon Routh that good of a Superman? Hell no! Superman Returns sucked and Routh was just an OK Superman. He is too skinny and he is not a very good actor. by The Merk

when I thought of who should play Sinestro, and I'm glad I wasn't the only one. He physically has the right look (with red makeup) and the chops to play the character well. Haley is a great actor, and if they go with a CGI Sinestro (Like Dr. Manhattan in Watchmen) to get the physicality right (Tall, slender, red and with, yes, a big head) then he'd do fine. Frankly, with all do respect to Haley, I have doubts about the producers knowing anything about the character if he was their first choice for the part.

    Haley, Routh

    by Rommel Catuncan

Well, Haley would bring that psychotic baggage and that would be good for Sinestro, to be truly menacing, instead of sophisticated and dapper and refined. You'd believe he would hate someone like Hal Jordan/Ryan Reynolds, with his Van Wilder/Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place quips and his pretty boy face. Haley is not the pretty boy, he hates the pretty boy, he is the sociopath/social outcast etc.- that's his thing now, and yes, it is typecast but hey next you'll tell me Tommy Lee Jones is going to play someone stoic and no-nonsense or Parker Posey is going to play a bitch. <p> I want Superman to really go through a trial for his next movie, something that really messes with his mind and body, beliefs etc. It would need someone to suit that, to give that dramatic weight. I'm not sure it is Routh. But I'd rather him than a bigger name who is nothing like Superman.

... and I agree: Brandon Routh definitely as Superman.

    by riskebiz

Apart from Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh is as much the personification of Superman on the big screen as we'll get. He was excellent and there is no reason to recast the part. I, for one, would be tickled by him playing the part in GREEN LANTERN. If Warner Bros. had been smart, they would have cast him in a small cameo part as reporter Clark Kent in THE DARK KNIGHT. If they want buzz back on a Superman movie, that would have been a smart way to go. But I guess they aren't smart. Or they are petty ... or both.

  • Oct. 19, 2009, 9:08 a.m. CST

    SUPERMAN...I Agree

You guys at Warners want the next SUPERMAN film to be a MAJOR hit? THen listen to the talkbackers. Throw cameos with Superman or Clark Kent (Brandon Routh) into the next several DC Universe films that are turned out-the DARK KNIGHT sequel, GREEN LANTERN, WONDER WOMAN, FLASH, et. al.-and you will have viewers chomping at the bit to see the Man of Steel in another feature again. Do it right, or don't bother doing it at all.

    Superman Returns sequel

    by Rommel Catuncan

Apparently they're still considering a Superman Returns sequel because BRYAN has expressed interest and they've come up with a couple of solutions to the problems of the first movie- namely, Jason White aka "The Kid" aka as Jason-El. A studio stooge wandering around the lot told a guy who runs a movie website that:<p> 1)Jason, the reunion with Lois, the dialogue, the pacing, ALL of Superman Returns is merely an IMPLANTED MEMORY. In the sequel, Superman wakes up and he is still in deep space, floating through the debris that was his beloved Krypton. He then sees an approaching ship- it is Brainiac! Brainiac laughs and reveals that he implanted those memories as a joke, to kill time, he was bored, was just playin' etc. Cue sequel...<p> The other possibility overheard was: 2)Superman, Jason and Lois travel to space so Jason can get used to being half-alien. However, Lois and Jason are killed in their cryogenic chambers when their ship crashes on a planet full of all men called Fiory 16. In one gruesome and heartbreaking scene, Superman has to perform a painful and quite graphic autopsy on Jason, with help from Charles Dance. It is very existential and bleak. But it clears the way for them to "update the mythos" and "respect the source material."

    by Mr_Satan

<p>And no I refuse to place him in that role. Just on principle of I don't like my actors switching hero roles willy nilly. I would complain about Reynolds doing that.... But I give him a pass because he gets to do Scar Jo and I'm living vicariously through him.<p> <p>Back to Cpt Marvel, Alex Ross rendered the perfect Cpt. Marvel and it looks like George Reeves looking guy. Big barrel chested guy. And not to many actors look like that anymore. Scratch that no one does.<p> So I which they would go with someone who has the similar facial structure of the character and a presence of grandeur. Warburton just makes you want to laugh just looking at him. Maybe he can be Prime. Yeah that's the ticket. Someone get JettL on that project pronto. And someone get me Danielle Fishel, Amy Jo Johnson and Danica McKellar... Not for any roles just to you know hang out with get a sarsaparilla.

    by Rommel Catuncan

This Clark Kent cameo seems tricky still, what with the "to Routh or not to Routh" situation. All I'm really expecting to see is maybe the back of Clark's head and his name plate on his desk for a split second. Or maybe he flies by really fast one time so you can't see his face. I don't know. I agree that putting Superman in this could diminish Hal's story, since he could be overshadowed. And what about Flash? His movie seems more likely next, so they'll probably try to fit him in somewhere. <p> And again, I don't expect a Superman cameo in Nolan's Batman movies, since Nolan doesn't want other superheroes. <p> I think if Routh is replaced and the new guy impresses then not many people will lament the loss of Routh anymore. How can you know that there aren't others out there (since they're unknowns) who could also do the role justice? <p> Yeah, Puddy as the Tick, Buscemi as "Vegetable Lasagna".

<p>Dude is like 4'6"! In the recent animated feature Sinestro is tall and muscular. I like that incarnation as opposed to the gigantic-headed scrawney weirdness of past incarnations. It looks like that's the way they are going here and for that I suppose Jackie is perfect. Brandon Routh was great as Supes

    by ominus

and as clark kent too.Or u rather to have nic cage as supes? Now if they go with routh as supes for the next movie, they should retcon the previous, the kid HAS to go,supes having children might work in comic, but not in movies, its not what the fans want to see. <p>You know the problem the stuidos have with their big-budget mainstream comic-movies,is not if they please the fans and get their money. They need the money from the average movie-goer,who might know who supes is,but doesnt buy all the superman comics or sleep on pillows imprinted with the letter S. <P>That means that they cant risk their investment on a new, expensive movie with Routh, despite if he is perfect for supes and accepted by the fans, because he didnt manage to make an impact with his first introductory movie (Not that this is his fault) <p>So its not likely that they are going to make a new supes movie,or even a cameo with Routh as supes, not even if singer will agree to work for free for the new supes movie. They will just wait 2-3 years,so that SR is a long past memory, and they will start from start, with new creators, ideas, cast, vision etc.Just like what Paramount did with ST. <p>guys holywood cinema is business above all.The studio exec think as businessmen, their aim is as much as possible to profit. They are not going to risk for a new movie,in fact to jump start the movie franchise of supes, with the same elements (director, protagonist, vision) which proved to be not so successful. would u?

  • Oct. 19, 2009, 11:59 a.m. CST

Routh is hardly "perfect" and "accepted by the fans"!

    by REVENGE_of_FETT

<p>He CLEARLY can't act. For the central character he barely has any lines! I'll grant you did an excellent Chris Reeve Clark Kent impression, but that's it. His Superman was like an emo zombie.</p><p>There's so many problems with Superman Returns I'm not going to get into it, but Routh WAS one of them. If you look at comparison pictures between him and Reeve, Reeve was clearly bigger. Please note that REEVE DID NOT USE A PADDED SUIT and STILL looked bigger....because HE WAS!</p><p>The fact is that the Singer camp lied repeatedly about Superman Returns. They said at Comic Con that the kid wasn't Superman's and in a press release they said the suit wasn't padded. So it's pretty suspect that Routh ever achieved anywhere near Reeve's weight.</p><p>But be that as it may, Superman Returns failed at the box office and I'll grant you that opinion is at least divided on Routh's fittingness as Superman. Since there has been much talk of a reboot, it is likely they will recast. I say that is a good thing. I can't believe that on all the Earth, Brandon fricken' Routh is best suited for Superman. He was only cast for his resemblance to Reeve and probably his Reeve impression. Since a reboot would not require that, there really is no reason to cast him again.</p>

But Sinestro should be English. David Niven. Can't get more English than that. GL is one of the few comics where the artist admitted to using real life models for his characters. Hal Jordan is Paul Newman, Sinestro is David Niven, and The Guardians are (believe it or not) Israeli Prime Minister David Ben Gurion.

  • Oct. 19, 2009, 1:54 p.m. CST

    You know what

    by ominus

the problem is that if you go with the niven like sinestro appearance in the big screen, then the character will evoke more laughs than a sense of threat, since he will be the epitome of the arch-stereotype of the villain: the english guy with the twirling mustache.u can not go more cliche than that. <p>so imho they should go for a different route with sinestro, his core character should be remain intact, but his appearance and his personality expressions (the way he talks,he walks,he reacts with the others, his presence etc) should be changed a bit. <p>Sinestro is fascinating as a villain, because he DOES believe that he is correct about his view of the GL corps and how they should be.he doesnt want to conquer the world or destroy it because his father didnt buy him lollipops as a kid.He believes in his duty and in GL,but he doesnt believe in the means of their mission.

    by Rorschach1

I've been worried that they're going to make it "easier to identify with" and go with an all human Corps. But that'll take away from everything about GL that's fun. But maybe they'll get some people involved that respect the material and the universe it creates and go with it. Jackie Earle Haley is the breakout actor right now, and for once the "breakout actor" is actually good. I say give him a shot. He's got enough charisma to carry that side of Sinestro and when he turns.. I think we know how Haley does evil. In the GL: First Flight film, Michael Madsen does Kilowog and I think he'd actually be pretty great in the live action too. And no Brandon Routh. Please no. I don't know what it is about him that made him so NOT Superman to me, but it's still there.

    Haley as Sinestro?

    by Andrew1417

No. It isn't a knock against Haley, because he's a great actor. Part of the reason he fit the Rorschach role so well was because he physically fit the role, In addition to his amazing portrayal of the character. I don't doubt he would do well, however, physically he cannot pull off a convincing Sinestro. Sinestro is always depicted as a towering, domineering, confident, arrogant individual. The key focal point of that sentence, is TOWERING. This isn't Rudy. In this regard we're talking about a character who's supposed to be taller than Hal Jordan. I'm not even saying the actor who plays him has to be 6'6-6'7, but can anyone really fathom a Sinestro where Reynolds' Jordan is looking down at him? I'd be much less opposed to him playing Hector Hammond.

by screedle has a first draft review of the script and it seems that Sinestro isn't in it? Then again, it is only a first draft

iesb has a script review and says that Sinestro is in it, but that he is not the main villain, he is more or less being set up. The script review that you linked to (as well as Latino Review) also states that GL fights with other Lanterns on Oa- that's where Sinestro comes in.
