Mel Gibson's Back On The Beat In The Brand New Trailer For EDGE OF DARKNESS!
Beaks here...

That Bah-ston accent is going to take some getting used to, but it sure is swell to see Mel Gibson mixing it up in front of the camera again.
Yahoo! Movies has the brand new trailer for Martin Campbell's EDGE OF DARKNESS, and it looks like a high-octane remake of the classic 1985 BBC miniseries - which, coincidentally, was directed by a young chap named Martin Campbell. Obviously, in paring down the running time from 317 minutes to somewhere presumably around two hours, a great deal of storytelling nuance is going to be sacrificed. But I can live with that if we get a pair of terrific tough-guy performances from Gibson and Ray Winstone (as "the guy who usually stops you from connecting A to B").
Check it out!
EDGE OF DARKNESS is currently scheduled for release on January 29, 2010. Andrew Bovell and Academy Award-winner William Monahan tag-teamed the adaptation of Troy Kennedy-Martin's original script.

mel gibson and ray winston in tough guy mode? fuck yeah. bring that shit
-
If Tarantino ever decides to do his John Brown pic, Mel would be perfect to star.

bout time

damn thought I had it then

how many mel gibson movies does it take to make a mel gibson mov
by haterofcrap
looks ok...but really it looks like a bunch of gibson's other movies just pasted together into a new blockbuster.

Will the Polanski defenders please come and condemn Mel...
by thebearovingian
I think you know what I'm gettin' at.
-
Casino Edge of Darkness Royale!
-
Nothin' but love Mel. Sign me up.
-
He's a great actor with an undeniable charisma and presence. THe kind of leading man they just do not make many of these days. I don't give a rats ass about his or any other stars personal life, he doesn't owe me shit.
-
The original series was phenomenal so I was not looking forward to this but maybe they did a good job.
-
He is a solid filmmaker, but I missed him actually acting again. The movie looks good.
-
One of the few people in hollywood who belongs on both sides of the camera.
-
Looks great.
-
Good to see a movie about a tough guy once in awhile. If I have to sit through another movie about a 95 pound chick kicking full grown men's asses.....well, it would suck.
-
However, I am glad to see him FINALLY making a real appearance in front of it for a change. This looks pretty good.
-
Shooting from the hip. Love it.
-
This actually looks good.
-
Bring it on!! Mad Max!!!
-
I thought Riggs' comeback movie was that beaver puppet shit. Looks like a Bruce Willis movie, but Riggs is a better cop than John Mclane anyday.
-
is the most interesting action director around. I'm as excited that he is behind the camera as I am about Mel in front of it. This movie may not root our eyeballs Avatar-style, but will most definitely root our awesome gritty action glands.
-
for non-Aussies.
-
That looks fucking AMAZING! Mel Gibson acting crazy shooting motherfuckers again?? HELL YEAH!
-
A bit sappy start there, but the rest looks like very solid action flick, with some good actors.
-
and I agree with BlackBriar, Mel needs to make us MadMax4!
-
... this just looks generic.
-
At least they could have had Clapton's great theme music from the original. This will be about as good a remake as State of Play and Life of Mars -- i.e. Not Very. Be smart and wait for the inevitable re release of the original.
-
Is that really the same "Edge of Darkness"? High octane indeed..
-
it that the same character from taken?
-
Dunno if anyone remembers but I sent in a test screening review a few months ago. Its a good thriller with a strong comeback performance from Mel, but its NOT an ACTION movie. It's a detective story/mystery, and pretty much ALL the action moments from the film are in this trailer (unless they did reshoots).
-
The dude is the shit. Nil by Mouth, Sexy Beast, The War Zone...jaw dropping performances.
-
...won't be kissing his daughter's vibrator in this one like Bob Peck did in the original.
To everyone here who loves awesome things, please find a copy of the original. I'm looking forward to this and think it could be good, but the original is one of the greatest things broadcast on UK TV. It's up there with The Thick of It, The Prisoner, Cracker, The Day Today and Brasseye. Essential viewing. -
the proposition, scum. i WILL civilise this land.
-
Been way to long since Mel's done a film. look at that guy, there's a man who's got a lot of shit going on in his head. I want lethal weapon 5 and i hate Ray Winston
-
And it's a good thing.
-
just imagine for one second if Mel was on for another one. just imagine. for one second. i mean.... holy fuck.
-
Mel really loved that crucifixtion
-
Mad Max 4 and Lethal Weapon 5 are still viable projects for Gibson. Cool to see someone with presence and charisma back on the screen instead of all these twentysomething bland loons.
-
Bob Peck's performance throughout was superb, top notch in all depts, with a great score courtesy of Kamen and Clapton (wish Campbell could've used the main theme for the movie).
-
This looks like a Dennis Lehane rip-off (yeah I know it was a BBC series) but no matter because I'm off Gibson forever. Some things are unforgivable, and sorry - can't separate the "artist" from the "art" in this case.
-
Fuck off AnnoyYou you sissy cunt.
-
been taking lessons from jason bourne
-
I hope Lethal Weapon 5 contains the intensity of this trailer.
-
Kick-Ass...!
-
99% percentile self-righteous nut... go for 100!
-
Now that is the Mel Gibson I wanna see! I watched the TV original when it came out when I was a kid, real slow pensive moving stuff, really affected me... this looks to be more rock em sock em, but that's cool, no point in slavishly remaking the original. "You on the cross or you banging in the nails"... sex-wee.
-
Sorry, but I have a tough time finding him charismatic after all of his Glenn Beckish shenanigans.
-
Thank God for youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8B8T3XUC-TE -
Mel is back looks to be in top form here. He needs to do more flicks... along with Bruce and Arnie and Sly... some of the last flights for these guys and they can still make some gems...
-
when we heard about this about a year ago. Looks like a good action thriller, and not cheesy like Ransom was. I still think Mel is a sado-masochistic Christian freak though.
-
Oct 15, 2009 6:37:23 AM CDT
Looks far removed from the peerless original
by judge dredds fresh undies
This looks like total shit compared to the mini-series.
Bob Peck was the fucking man! -
I hope this is a solid comeback for Mel...He's been away to long..
-
Nice to see AICN following its usual trend of approving of remakes... oh no wait. This fucking assrape of a perfect perfect mini series deserves to end in the toilet. As does the asshole above who reviewed it in a positive light. Fucking retard.
-
Hope this is as great as it could be!
-
I guess all that drinking takes a toll after awhile. But you know, this doesn't look bad...provided the script doesn't try to pile on too many contrivances and twists at the end. State of Play tried a similar trick with a BBC series and it was OK, nothing great...there's a definitely room in the market for a nice, twisty, smart adult thriller.
-
Splendid. Of course it won't be anything as complex and dark as the BBC mini-series, but what the heck. Manly men doing manly shit. One ticket sold to me already. And Campbell's about the best action director working in mainstream US cinema.
-
Oct 15, 2009 8:10:25 AM CDT
as I've never seen the mini-series, I liked the trailer
by just pillow talk
so I'm down with it.
-
Sweet.
-
This looks really good, and it looks like it capitalizes on Gibson's strengths, which is going batshit crazy and whooping ass (Lethal Weapon, Braveheart, Ransom). Seems like he nailed the Boston accent, too! Count me in opening weekend.
-
...crazy or not, I love Mel Gibson on screen...I forgot how much. And nobody does dead eyed crazy like him...it's contagious. When he goes all dead eyed you want whoever pissed him off dead, their family dead, their dog dead, their house burned to the ground.Unless it's Jews. He's usually off base about Jews.Anyway, this look old school great...Can't wait.
-
haha. You're right. He's got the perfect simmering madness expression where you can feel the rage brewing inside.
-
Hope he says "Sugar Tits" in that Boston accent somewhere in the film.
-
Who died last month. I'll reserve judgement on this, but the original TV series is one of the best pieces of television ever made, so the movie has quite a pedigree to live up to.
-
A winning combo. Martin Campbell is one of the most underrated directors alive, and I've loved everything Monahan has written. Might have to check out his novel (s?).WHAT ARE YOU BUILT FOR?www.thenocturnalthird.com
-
Is BACK. And I could not be happier!
-
does not sound good on film. Remember Costner in Thirteen Days?
-
...it would be to have an older, crusty, pissed off old dog limping around kicking ass and taking names. We all know how that turned out.But this looks great...I want to see this, I want to see two or three more MAD MAX movies...I want more wrinkles of fury!
-
Two adults for 'Edge of Darkness' please?
-
Lethal Weapon and The Road Warrior, two of the greatest action films ever made. Mel Gibson may be a religious nut-job, but he’s still one of the most charismatic anti-semites working today.
-
The Boston accent isn't half bad. Personally I'd like to see a bit of a happy ending i.e. the daughter is shot but in a coma and recovers at the end.
-
Holy shit and here I thought the beaver movie was his new one. January, I am so there.
-
He said something stupid when he was drunk, and got ostracized. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson say that crap stone sober and are worshipped by the ignorant who want to get somewhere by a handout instead of hard work.
-
No wonder it looks good.
-
Now that we all know Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is Jewish, it's hard to hate on Mel.
-

Mel would be all kinds of awesome in a Bad Lieutenant film
by chakraborty
Wandering around drunk, having sex with hookers, pulling young girls over and telling them "show me how you suck a cock" while he jerks off. That would be so great, because you would watch it knowing that's what he's really like. Hollywood, make this happen.
-
Mad Max 4 with Mel Gibson please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Ray Winstone stole your job!! get'em
-
Welcome back Mr. Gibson.
-
Maybe I need to see the trailer on a bigger screen, but was not that impressed. Had a Conspircy Theory vide to it (which isn't bad). And Martin Campbell was the bomb in Vertical Limit, Goldeneye and No Escape so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this one.
-
Please make another romantic comedy, show ricky gervais how its done.
-

Mel Gibson as Bizarro Harrison Ford - I LIKE VERY MUCH!
by royston lodge
Harrison Ford is the middle-aged man always trying to save his family. "I want my wife!"
Mel Gibson is the middle-aged man indiscriminately throwing grenades because his family's been butchered.
I like. I like a lot. -
It could work.
-
I'll check it when it comes out.
-
This looks pretty cool.
-
Its too familiar territory for Mel.
-
I think this is the right movie to come back to. The beaver movie, I don't know. But Jodie knows what she's doing. So I'll wait and see.
-
Gibsons gonna own this shit!!!! http://sickpicks.blogspot.com/
-
But it's good to have him back. I'll take him over Matt Damon any day of the week. And ironically, his boston accent is better then Matt Damon's. HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!
-
..Mossad didn't have their hands in every single country and dirty deal on the globe, FAR WORSE than the CIA and that's saying something. Still a free country last time I checked, Mel's entitled to his opinion drunk or not it's not like AIPAC doesn't fucking own congress and American foreign policy, according to their own leaders.
That aside this movie looks awesome, Mel's awesome, words can't hurt you and unlike Germany we haven't outlawed intellectual discourse. Oh, and go ahead and call me an anti-semite you pathetic ass, cliche'd, lying-assed motherfuckers, I don't give a FUCK what you think and neither does Mel. -
Why wasn't Mel Gibson cast in The Expendables? So good to see Mel in an action movie and not some shite like "What Women Want" - although to be fair it wasn't a bad rom-com..
-
and Winstone is friggin awesome in anything not titled Indy IV.
-
It's been months since we've had a 'America is evil and kills innocent people' movie. Keep up the good work.
-
Welcome back, Mad Max! We missed you!
-
So you yanks are currently working on screwing up Edge of Darkness, State of Play and the Red Riding trilogy? could you not just, y'know, watch the originals? What's the matter, too much talking, not enough explosions?
-
Is really a compliment for him....he's really been forced to grab his ankles and had his shit pushed in the past 3 years, so getting back his old image wouldn't be too bad. I'd rather see Mel back than Chris "maybe if I wear a teal bowtie with a teal sweater on Larry King people will forgive me" Brown come back to prominence.
-
And/or tortured. I have to admit nobody goes into primal rage quite like Mel Gibson. If he were twenty years younger he would have made a great Wolverine. He wouldn't have looked a damn thing like him but he would have nailed the character.
-
That's good; I need to see him in a fliq to wash the crapfest that was UNNECESSARILY LONG TITLE TREATING PEOPLE LIKE THEY WERE STUPID AND DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS AN ORIGIN MOVIE: WOLVERINE.
-
She was the first badass live action chiq I ever saw, I wanted to change my name to Sorsha after seeing how beautiful and kickazz she was in Willow. Does anyone know if this is available in the states?
-
According to Suncoast, anyway. If I play my cards right hopefully I'll get GI JOE RISE OF COBRA AND GI JOE RESOLUTE and this movie.
-
I want to dislike you, but you're so damn badass I'm completely unable to do that. Even your goody "Boston" accent isn't enough, sorry.
-
Fuck news on Twilight or Avatar. This is what ol'Hint wants.
-
A modern take on MM4 with Mel fully behind it would be INCREDIBLE! A perfect tribute to a pivotal role in his career and something to completely reboot his "golden years" acting career. It has such mind-blowing potential, I can't for the life of me understand why Mel and or the studios aren't doing everything in their power to make it happen.
-
Ugh, cliche action movie trailer line to the extreme.Other than that and the fact this is opening in the late-January death slot usually reserved for shitty comedies like Paul Blart: Mall Cop, this looks pretty impressive, and it's great to have Gibson back. Plus, Martin Campbell IS insanely underrated as an action filmmaker.
-

Holy crap..Mel's back..godbless that jewhating badass
by glory_fades_immaxfischer
-
I completely respect the opinion that Mel is best, or more appreciated, as an actor. I've seen most of what he did early, as an actor, especially the action movies. However, I gotta say. When I started really getting into movies, he was just getting into directing them, and he made more of an impression on me behind the camera.I happen to really like only a few directors, like most TBers I guess, and Mel's one of them. There aren't many directors names out there that get me truly excited as his, at the beginning of a trailer. Even Apocalypto, which, I THINK, most people weren't that into, I...LOVED. I found the story choice strange and possibly even pointless, but he made is a movie worth seeing. Almost no one does that nowadays.S'just what I think.
-
to begin with. It wasn't like he was at a press conference or w/ a reporter. He was drunk off his ass yelling at a cop that was taking him to jail. I've gotten a dui and I did the same as he did. I yelled that he was ruining my life and that he was a scumbag etc. Point is, Hollywood is filled w/ so many jewish folk he'd been better off getting pulled over by a black, Asian, woman, any other type of heritage. The jews they don't forget and they blackball you like the mob!
-
This does look pretty amazing. Pretty much every name associated with this gets you excited. And good call Nasty, Campbell is tragically underrated.
-
Mad Max's Son: "why are you still mad daddy?"
Mad Max: "It is the title of the film, I'm not actually mad"
Mad Max's Son: "Can we search the apocalyptic waste lands for dog food?"
Mad Max: "No son, I'm divorcing your ugly mother for a younger woman who loves to lick my wrinkly bits" -
Grrreat looking trailer, and yes the Gibster is also one helluva moviemaker. Apocalyto is indeed Cinematic bliss ( Also know as CineMagic ).
-
Holy shit...that's the best one-liner I have heard in some time. Looks good.
-
You stupid Nazi.
-
So great to see him back! Yeah I know he's a crazy motherfucker, but I love almost all his work, so yeah I'm selfish I want more Mel baby!!!
-
I see it's by BBC films, shouldn't have too long to wait before it's shown on UK TV then. Nice accent Gibbo.
-
If he's in a movie, I go see it (cept for the very few rom coms he's done). It is so good to see so much genuine enthusiasm for the guy here. I've been a fan of his since Tim and Mad Max if you can believe that, and my enthusiasm for his work has never diminished. God, it's been a long wait. I can't believe Apocalypto was the last thing by Mel I saw. Anyway, I'm rambling. Welcome back Mel. You're still the one. And this looks like a great flick. I never tire of a well-done cop revenge thriller. This should be a goddamn corker.
-
Thanks for coming back! Looks great! As South Park once basically said "Say what you like about Mel Gibson, but he certainly knows story structure!"
-
Your top-notch thriller/revenge flick. I've seen Gibson do this one dozens of times, it's completely worth seeing another one in my mind.
-
Shit. That guy is responsible for some of my favorite movies, and certainly movies that I can watch without getting tired of. RIP many times over.
-
What was he thinking (Winstone's role)?
-
Too Soon!
-
Is Mel going to kiss his daughter's dildo in this adaptation?
-
Neither is Eastwood. They should do at least 1 more Dirty Harry and Mad Max and movie.
-
The original was great, Bob Peck played the lead, he was the hunter in Jurassic Park ("Clever Girl!") who became Velociraptor food.
-
I hope he nails those fuckers who killed his daughter and make them PAYBACK. And I hope he makes a one liner about their jews origins too, just to unsettle all the PC crowd !
-
The Swastinka that he is.
-
May he rot in prison with "Bubba" as his cellmate.
-

by vote fa stokes brutha
http://tinyurl.com/yfbq2a7That's awesome, isn't it?I know everyone wants Miller back on Fury Road, but what if Gibson directed? It'd be crazy, of course.thenocturnalthird.comWHAT ARE YOU BUILT FOR?
-
...let this be proof that a Mad Max film without Mel Gibson is no Mad Max film. Bring on Fury Road.
-
You are so F'ing WEAK! That's the best you can come up with? See how tired and sad your whiney positions have become? You know what I say is true and since you can't refute it with facts you call names. Thanks for proving how right I am you lame-assed loser, I couldn't have written 10,000 words that would have proven my point any better than you just did.
-
...none of these new actor/muppets that currently grace our screen- Gibbo is a true star, seeing this trailer after watching Lethal Weapon 2 on TV last week has reinforced how bloody brilliant he is.

Gibson, back on the streets with Murtaugh and Sugartits!
by mrmysteryguest
-
... but then Gibson's American accent has always only been just passable anyway.
-
... or banging in the nails!"Wow!! And people say Mel Gibson is too stuck up on his religion and has no sense of humour about it!
-
Really made me want to see it. Agreed that Gibson is a very charismatic leading man. Suprised it's coming out in the shitty month of January.
-
this looks pretty good :D
-
Bob Peck (Security guy "Clever Girl" from Jurassic Park)is so good in this. Bleak, poignant, and very much a cold war/nuclear age product. Well worth a watch! Plus its got Joe Don Baker in as well (im guessing the Ray Winstine character). And the theme tune is so haunting I had dreams about it as a kid.
-
Quality pedigree so I will check it out for sure.
