Mel Gibson's Back On The Beat In The Brand New Trailer For EDGE OF DARKNESS!

Published at:  Oct 15, 2009 1:17:26 AM CDT

Beaks here...

That Bah-ston accent is going to take some getting used to, but it sure is swell to see Mel Gibson mixing it up in front of the camera again.

Yahoo! Movies has the brand new trailer for Martin Campbell's EDGE OF DARKNESS, and it looks like a high-octane remake of the classic 1985 BBC miniseries - which, coincidentally, was directed by a young chap named Martin Campbell. Obviously, in paring down the running time from 317 minutes to somewhere presumably around two hours, a great deal of storytelling nuance is going to be sacrificed. But I can live with that if we get a pair of terrific tough-guy performances from Gibson and Ray Winstone (as "the guy who usually stops you from connecting A to B").

Check it out!

EDGE OF DARKNESS is currently scheduled for release on January 29, 2010. Andrew Bovell and Academy Award-winner William Monahan tag-teamed the adaptation of Troy Kennedy-Martin's original script.

Dunno if anyone remembers but I sent in a test screening review a few months ago. Its a good thriller with a strong comeback performance from Mel, but its NOT an ACTION movie. It's a detective story/mystery, and pretty much ALL the action moments from the film are in this trailer (unless they did reshoots).

I guess all that drinking takes a toll after awhile. But you know, this doesn't look bad...provided the script doesn't try to pile on too many contrivances and twists at the end. State of Play tried a similar trick with a BBC series and it was OK, nothing great...there's a definitely room in the market for a nice, twisty, smart adult thriller.

..Mossad didn't have their hands in every single country and dirty deal on the globe, FAR WORSE than the CIA and that's saying something. Still a free country last time I checked, Mel's entitled to his opinion drunk or not it's not like AIPAC doesn't fucking own congress and American foreign policy, according to their own leaders.
That aside this movie looks awesome, Mel's awesome, words can't hurt you and unlike Germany we haven't outlawed intellectual discourse. Oh, and go ahead and call me an anti-semite you pathetic ass, cliche'd, lying-assed motherfuckers, I don't give a FUCK what you think and neither does Mel.

    The Expendables

    by theeternalhipster

Why wasn't Mel Gibson cast in The Expendables? So good to see Mel in an action movie and not some shite like "What Women Want" - although to be fair it wasn't a bad rom-com..

    by meadowe

Is really a compliment for him....he's really been forced to grab his ankles and had his shit pushed in the past 3 years, so getting back his old image wouldn't be too bad. I'd rather see Mel back than Chris "maybe if I wear a teal bowtie with a teal sweater on Larry King people will forgive me" Brown come back to prominence.

And/or tortured. I have to admit nobody goes into primal rage quite like Mel Gibson. If he were twenty years younger he would have made a great Wolverine. He wouldn't have looked a damn thing like him but he would have nailed the character.

    MadMax 4: PERFECT Tribute

    by darkplanet

A modern take on MM4 with Mel fully behind it would be INCREDIBLE! A perfect tribute to a pivotal role in his career and something to completely reboot his "golden years" acting career. It has such mind-blowing potential, I can't for the life of me understand why Mel and or the studios aren't doing everything in their power to make it happen.

    by nasty in the pasty

Ugh, cliche action movie trailer line to the extreme.Other than that and the fact this is opening in the late-January death slot usually reserved for shitty comedies like Paul Blart: Mall Cop, this looks pretty impressive, and it's great to have Gibson back. Plus, Martin Campbell IS insanely underrated as an action filmmaker.

    Mel Gibson: Director

    by hyphin

I completely respect the opinion that Mel is best, or more appreciated, as an actor. I've seen most of what he did early, as an actor, especially the action movies. However, I gotta say. When I started really getting into movies, he was just getting into directing them, and he made more of an impression on me behind the camera.I happen to really like only a few directors, like most TBers I guess, and Mel's one of them. There aren't many directors names out there that get me truly excited as his, at the beginning of a trailer. Even Apocalypto, which, I THINK, most people weren't that into, I...LOVED. I found the story choice strange and possibly even pointless, but he made is a movie worth seeing. Almost no one does that nowadays.S'just what I think.

Gibson never should have gotten the grief he got

    by gqtaste

to begin with. It wasn't like he was at a press conference or w/ a reporter. He was drunk off his ass yelling at a cop that was taking him to jail. I've gotten a dui and I did the same as he did. I yelled that he was ruining my life and that he was a scumbag etc. Point is, Hollywood is filled w/ so many jewish folk he'd been better off getting pulled over by a black, Asian, woman, any other type of heritage. The jews they don't forget and they blackball you like the mob!

    by star hump

If he's in a movie, I go see it (cept for the very few rom coms he's done). It is so good to see so much genuine enthusiasm for the guy here. I've been a fan of his since Tim and Mad Max if you can believe that, and my enthusiasm for his work has never diminished. God, it's been a long wait. I can't believe Apocalypto was the last thing by Mel I saw. Anyway, I'm rambling. Welcome back Mel. You're still the one. And this looks like a great flick. I never tire of a well-done cop revenge thriller. This should be a goddamn corker.

Bob Peck (Security guy "Clever Girl" from Jurassic Park)is so good in this. Bleak, poignant, and very much a cold war/nuclear age product. Well worth a watch! Plus its got Joe Don Baker in as well (im guessing the Ray Winstine character). And the theme tune is so haunting I had dreams about it as a kid.
