Tommy Lee Jones And Matthew McConaughey Take On THE LINCOLN LAWYER!!

Published at:  Oct 14, 2009 11:48:01 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Tommy Lee Jones is looking to direct and co-star in an adaptation of Michael Connelly's novel THE LINCOLN LAWYER (available HERE). Matthew McConaughey would star.

"Lawyer," which is set up at Lakeshore Entertainment, centers on Mickey Haller, a wheeler-dealer Los Angeles lawyer who operates out of the back of his Lincoln. Haller is content with a career defending garden-variety criminals until he lands the case of a lifetime: defending a Beverly Hills playboy accused of murder.

McConaughey is on board to play Haller. It's unclear what role Jones would play; the playboy character, which could be the second male lead, is described in the book as somewhat younger than Jones, though the part could be adjusted to accommodate an older interpretation.

...says THR HERE.

Jones' last feature film directorial endeavor was THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA back 'round 2005, although he's currently helming a TV adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's THE SUNSET LIMITED for HBO. I believe that's supposed to broadcast next year.

    HARRY BOSCH !!!!!!!

    by ominus

God dammit when are we going to get a harry bosch movie??? Michael Connelly is my favourite com drama writer and Harry Bosch is one of the best fictional detective/inspector character i have ever read.
Unfortunately they fucked it up completely with Blood Work (i dont blame eastwood but the producers),another great book from Connelly, but i hope they make a better movie from the Lincoln Lawyer. But wasnt the protagonist from that movie black? (who also happens to be Bosch's half brother)

I hope this is McConaughey's return to meatier movie roles instead of the shit rom-com. I quite liked his performance in Reign of Fire, Frailty, Contact, and A Time to Kill. He's a very charismatic actor and I'd like to see him prove himself to be better.

    Harry Bosch casting

    by guy gaduois

That's a toughie. Gary Oldman could do it. Especially in the more recent books, Harry's gettin' old. Brad Johnson's kinda wooden and too leading man burly, but I always thought he deserved better than movie of the week.
I'd cast Bradley Cooper in my brain movie production of Lincoln Lawyer as Haller, but then it didn't seem to work in Brass Verdict. I feel he's more Virgil Flowers material from Sandford
Also, I should get a life and stop oversharing about casting in my mental movies.

I believe that Michael Connelly and also Robert Crais have contracts that state their two main characters Harry Bosch and Elvis Cole, two pretty freaking awesome detective will never be portrayed on film. Though their other works and characters can/will and have been portrayed

    McConaughey

    by dancetothebeatofthelivingdead

He is the laziest and most under performing great actor in the history of cinema. At times, you can see the charisma and natural ease he has in front of the camera manifest itself into a great, great performance. Think back to that one-take closing argument in A Time To Kill. Unfortunately for all of us, a great actor would rather shit his career away in garbage than challenge himself, so fuck him!

Jones must be playing older lawyer

    by aversiontherapy2

He's directing so he need not take a starring role, he would fit for the older family lawyer that has a smallish role. I can't think who else he would play. McConaughey might work as Haller, but he would have to really reign in the "dude"ness. I can think of better better actors to play Haller tho. Hopefully the whole Bosch angle will be out.

...Connelly is one of the best thriller writers out there. I'd love to see a Bosch movie and I could see Brolin as Harry. But for now, yeah, I'd love to see The Lincoln Lawyer. And a Travis Mcgee movie coming, and aren't they still planning a movie on White jazz? Hollywood's gettin' hardboiled!!!!!

    Specter/Evans?

    by doodler

Will it be like when young starlets died at the hands/houses of Specter or Bob Evans? That would adapt well for an older defendant.

I doubt this movie will suck - TLJ is a good director, and wouldn't take a crappy role like "old crotchety opposing counsel in a standard trial drama".

Sounds like it was prompted by B-starlet Lana Clarkson

    by thegreatwhatzit

i.e. Spector was convicted of her murder. Even if "they" only allude to Clarkson, I hope that her past career (frequently nude in drive-in commerce like DEATHSTALKER) will be researched. And how about a movie about the late Cheryl "Rainbeaux" Smith?
