David Tennant And Simon Pegg To Star In John Landis's BURKE AND HARE!

Published at:  Oct 13, 2009 10:37:40 PM CDT

Beaks here...

According to Bloody-Disgusting, John Landis has announced that David Tennant, aka "The Tenth Doctor", will join Simon Pegg in BURKE AND HARE!

Pegg and Tennant will star as the infamous duo who supplied a British medical school with cadavers they either harvested from graves or murdered themselves. Variations on the story have been told in Val Lewton/Robert Wise's classic THE BODY SNATCHER and Freddie Francis's solid THE DOCTOR AND THE DEVILS. Landis's version will be based on a screenplay by Piers Ashworth and Nick Moorcroft, whose previous credits include the non-horror likes of GOAL III, ST. TRINIAN'S, and ST. TRINIAN'S 2: THE LEGEND OF CURLY'S FRITTON'S GOLD. Not the most confidence-inspiring titles, but I can't imagine Landis would be able to get Pegg and Tennant involved if the script were complete rubbish.

While you're waiting for Landis to get started on his first feature since 1998's SUSAN'S GAME, you should absolutely check out his terrific Don Rickles documentary, MR. WARMTH. Here it is in its entirety via Hulu!

And if you're a truly committed Landis fan, you may or may not want to read this interview I conducted years ago for Collider.com (part one and part two).

    Burke and Hare weren't grave-robbers

    by castlemonster

Burke and Hare didn't rob any graves. They just murdered lodgers in their boarding house and local drunks and prostitutes and Knox apparently wasn't particularly concerned how the cadavers were acquired, only that they were as fresh as possible.

American Werewolf, Trading Places, The Blues Brothers are CLASSICS. Sure, he made some dross too but he is a major talent. And as for people calling him a murderer need to get back on their ritalin. What happened on the TWZ set was an accident. It was a horrible, horrible tragedy which I'm sure haunts landis each and every day. Give the man a break. This film should hopefully be a return to form.

... I know because I saw him come out of the screening at Frightfest. Don't think he was very impressed - he overheard me talking about it and said "You liked that movie?!" Tennant & Doctor Who...

    by captainbass

Doctor Who was a waste of Tennant's acting skills (as it was for every other good actor associated with it) because it is shite. Always was, always will be. Tennant was great in the BBC's adaptation of "Casanova", and as a transvestite barmaid/man in "Rab C. Nesbitt" so I have high hopes for this flick. Even with Pegg, who I'd agree is a bit 'one-note' but still enjoyable enough.

    The accident

    by winteralfs

That tragedy was not simply an accident, but an avoidable accident that was caused by Landis skirting around labor laws, and pushing FX past the point of dangerous. Their is a reason Spielberg disowned him. Bottom line is he made questionable decisions, took chances, risked the lives of 2 kids and Vic Morrow, and lost control of his set. He played loose and fast and gambled, and 3 people were killed. After the accident he has not been conciliatory and humbled, he has acted as if he were the victim, like a prima-donna and a martyr. A self absorbed arrogant ass in denial.

Absolutely, FLESH AND THE FIENDS is the definitive "Burke and Hare" movie (Cushing's performance as Dr. Knox is one of his best). Skip the U.S. release, i.e. THE FIENDISH GHOULS (total abortion, it appears someone lost the final reel). The entire cast was flawless--including Billie Whitelaw, a stand-out as the town slut. When the mood strikes, sample CIRCUS OF HORRORS (not Hammer, but the British bombshells [all linked to horror] and Anton Diffring's icy performance combine for one exploitation lassic.

    by shadowcat_664

I just had a geekgasm when I heard about David Tennant being cast in "Burke and Hare along with Simon Pegg. Simon and David are my two most favorite actors ever. I am a huge Dr. Who Fan. IMHO David was the best Dr. ever. Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are my most favorite movies of all time. Simon was awesome as Scotty in ST XI. I have all of David and Simon's TV shows and movies in my DVD collection. "Blink" and "The Long Game" are my two favorite Dr. Who episodes. Simon was fantastic as the Editor in "The Long Game". BTW, David Tennant is a Scot not English. He attended the same drama school in Glasgow as James McAvoy (one of my other fave actors). Burke and Hare were Irish immigrants. I think Burke's wife ran a rooming house and that is how they obtained some of the bodies. I plan to take the Burke and Hare tour when I visit Edinbourgh next year. Sorry haters, but John Landis is one of my favorite horror directors. I will be seeing this film when it comes out in theatres.

    --------

You can appreciate his work as a director, just like you can appreciate Polanski's work as a director, but acknowledge that his negligence was responsible for killing those 2 kids and Vic Morrow, and you just don't care enough for that fact to impact you choosing to watch any more of his films. Landis being an arrogant prick guilty of manslaughter and also an uneven, if relatively talented, director are not mutually exclusive facts. Just like Polanski made a masterpiece in Chinatown, but hes still a rapist. Does that fact make Chinatown any less of a movie?

    Landis screwed up

    by thegreatwhatzit

His behavior in the courtroom, e.g. tripping the (female) proecuting attorney, circumvented any sort of sympathy. Landis is, indisputably, a talented director of comedy. But his arrogance eroded his career. This is all documented in the book (chronicling the TWILIGHT ZONE/court case).

    Landis' killer arrogance

    by flavortime

Numerous members of his film crew testified against him stating he was an egotistical bully who repeatedly refused to listen to the mortal danger he was placing a 6 and 7 year old infant in,he lied to their parents about the obvious jeopardy he planned to put them in.He screamed "LOWER,LOWER,LOWER" through a megaphone to the helicopter pilot until it was 24 feet above the MASSIVE explosions he had insisted upon(as Morrow and the two infants stood underneath). He quipped "We may lose the helicopter".Vic Morrow and a 6 year old child were decapitated and the 7 year old child died instantly solely to feed his overweaning ego.To save his own skin he even had the nerve to turn up (presumably on lawyer's advice) uninvited or wanted at Morrow's funeral, walked up to the pulpit and said to the decapitated man's wife and children "Tragedy can strike in an instant, film is immortal!!".Afterwards,at his trial he relied on the jury's lack of knowledge of the workings of a film set to pretend other people were responsible for his fatal decisions as he simpered (for himself) on the stand. His part of the final film was SLATED.He still tries to blame everyone else and paints himself as the victim.Repugnant.
