* “Big Bang Theory” is suddenly dang close to overtaking “House” as Monday’s top show. All five CBS shows were up; both Fox dramas were down.

* The lesbian-kiss episode of “Heroes” gave the superhero drama a rare uptick. “Leno” climbed slightly too but NBC remains mired in fourth place.

* ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars” hit its season low; “Castle” dipped back to “Heroes” level but still remains north of its season-premiere number.

I hear about BBT fairly often for a sitcom. Not Office/30 Rocks levels, but that's probably because it has an unfashionable laugh track. I am surprised it's as popular as it is, but it's an easy-watch, enjoyable show.

I thought Heroes wasn't half bad. Liked how the carnies were stalking Claire, Sylar/Nathan's whole ordeal, and learning what was so great about the sound color power. Then again, maybe my expectations have been lowered. Either way, hey, Ernie Hudson!

    by jimbojones123

Great detail. The dialed down episode played awesome. Winston, Darth Maul, Greatest American Hero all in one episode! Sylar may be free of himself. More visual sound - it is beautiful. Top 5 episode of the series. Claire and Dad are too damn creepy together. Perv. I love change the world Peter. He has been what has been missing since season one. Traci stay gone. Great job team Heroes.

Agreed, Jimbo. Last night was Heroes' turnaround.

    by starwarsredux

I've watched and enjoyed the show for a while now, but last night's episode was the first time in a while it's really delivered a solid, Season 1-quality episode. I'm genuinely stoked to see how Sylar will fare with the Carnies, how Invisible Girl will screw around with Claire, even how Deaf Girl will learn to use her wierd synesthesia power. I'm reminded of both Daredevil (one sense impaired, another heightened) and Paul Atreides ("My name has become a killing word!"). And now Peter and Hiro again-- perhaps Petrelli can cure Nakamura of his disease, and maybe even his annoying-cute streak, so he can finally become Future-Hiro.
It wasn't just the Lesbian Stalker Girl who helped stop (or at least slow down) the show's fall, Herc. It was a good episode all around, and it shows they don't need Bryan Fuller to deliver Season 1 quality. Like I said, I've enjoyed the show for years, but this is the first time in a while that I've loved it this much. Great job indeed.

for at least this week. The show is moving along very well and the Great American Hero was awesome. I hope Hudson stays, but its probably a one-shot deal. What Heroes is doing right.

    by taking_up_space

I've watched every episode and have bashed on it quite a bit during the past two seasons as it sank into suckiness time after time. Now, however, the show is doing things right.

They are telling stories slowly and not rushing things, taking time to develop the characters (and in some cases, re-develop).

They are building a sense of mystery. Great books, TV shows and movies have something in common - they build the mystery, rather than rushing in with the money shot. Heroes has finally seemed to grasp that and is taking their time to develop this season in a great way. I actually care what happens and can't see every twist a mile away.

They played our expectations well with the development of the Single White Female type roomie for Claire. Come on, most of us thought she was a nutjob killer, right? Awesome twist.

In short, Heroes is finally rewarding the patience of those who have stuck with it. Of course now that it's good again, it will likely be canceled ala Southland.

    by starwarsredux

Synesthesia as a superpower was cool enough-- plenty of artists and musicians have been rumored to have it, and to think of them as superheroes is kind of neat. To see it develop as a way to focus sound into an attack makes it even cooler, though, and I'm really excited to see how it will develop. Season 3 suffered, I thought, because the writers didn't try to develop new characters (besides the bounty-hunter guy who was quickly thrown away this season). Don't let the haters scare you off, Team Heroes-- Season 4 is looking damn good, so far.

    by scumcock

Claire didn't recoil or have her eyes open in shock. They were closed and she was totally into it. THAT'S the plot point I want to see explored! Especially since they made a point of mentioning her history of boyfriendlessness that episode.

    Reply to Talkback

  • I gotta say, after the near-craptacular seasons two and three, HEROES might be making an actual comeback in season four. The GAH theme nod was a touch of genius and how great was it that instead of going the lame "Claire's new roomie friend is a murdering psycho" route, they came up with the "invisible girl is actually manipulating things" explanation instead. Did NOT see that coming.

    NBC

    by jinxo

The Jay Leno thing makes less and less sense to me. Okay, on a ratings-to-cost level Leno is working for them. Fine. But they are ruining the lead in for the local news, screwing their ratings (and ad revenue) as well as all the rest of NBC's late night lineup. And something else just hit me. Part of the ratings news every week is that NBC is in 4th place. Well of course they are! With their willingness to take lower ratings for Jay 5 nights a week, they have no chance at anything but 4th place. Individual show ratings are fine but being the big bragging rights have always been who is the top network and the worst press has always been who's at the bottom of the heap. NBC basically has volunteered to take the title of perpetual loser. How can that in any way be good business?

This was my least favorite HOUSE episode of the season

    by yackbacker

It was still a great hour of television, but the build-up with Chase and Foreman's cover-up had me hoping for some major fall-out. Mind you, Cameron is going to find out and leave Chase at some point, but it felt a little too convenient to get them off the hook so quickly. I do like House's "let's fix everything" hobby entering into Thirteen's world (and Wilson's bluff was awesome) AND I like Cuddy's developing trust with House. Here's hoping next week brings the hammer down on Chase and Foreman via Cameron.

    by jayemel

I watch it every Monday and tell everyone I know about it (and they almost always love it). Of course it's not real. It shouldn't be. Attempting to portray reality and intellecualism only creates hogwash like 30 Rock and Modern Family. Also, I'm not over 60. I'm under 30.

    (2. How I Met Your Mother
    3. Cougar Town

Where Heroes is finally getting it...

    by jimbojones123

You can miss an episode and there has not been a game changer. Sylar has flip flopped a dozen times from good to bad. Hey, so has Nathan, and Mohinder, and Parkman, even the powerless to powerful Ando. HRG ( did producers plant that nickname in talkbacks and chatrooms so they could use the quriky nickname???) has been all over the place. No consistancy from Claire either. The worst is Ma Patrelli. She is played to be good, but she is the worst of all of them. But when they make the soul of the show, Peter, be lost for direction, the show has failed. Future Hiro episode has Peter totally badass and we cheer for him. Then he is pointless and loses his memory. The company was a logistical mess that never came together. The many time travel plots have left nothing but plot holes in their wake. To turn things around, a few key plot points are finally coming together. The world is better without the total screwup that is Nathan Patrelli. Peter is finally getting tired of his evil mother. Noah and Claire are not chummy. He is almost as bad as Nathan. Mom had the right idea, move on. Claire is dealing with her powers and not on the run, just living with them. That is who she was in season one. Why they tried so many other directions is beyond me. Parkman is fighting his own powere. He has the worst of them all. Driving himself insane knowing the thoughts of everybody around him. Hiro is dealing with real death and not the same silly stop time and move the parts a little bit. Mohinder is nowhere to be found. Ari's characters are in the background as well. I still do not understand her point on the show. She must have a very expensive release clause in her contract. It all comes down to Sylar and Peter though. Sylar fighting and hating who his is is frighteningly inspiring. I am cheering for this guy to finally get on the road to somewhere besides just being menacing. But the key is still Peter. The damn show is called Heroes, but nobody ever does ANYTHING HEROIC. They wouldbbe better off calling it "people with abilities". At least that would match the plot of the show better. I am still not sold on the Carnival's point, but at least they are avoiding the 11th reboot on why these people have powers. The White Pocahantas (Colors of the Wind-I admit, that is way too much of a stretch to make a good nickname) Is key as well to the tone of the show. For the first time since Season one, there is joy in having these abilities. Even more from sharing them. Remember Hiro and the Flying Man, or Hiro and Peter on the train, or Claude running into Peter, or people discovering Issac's paintings. These were the golden moments and interactions that stay with us. Claire shutting down Ted. Give meaning to these people, not just make a list of unused powers. Fire person - Claire's mom. Ice person - Ari is still under contract. Electric person - hire Veronica Mars. Earth Person - leader of carnival. Keep the plots moving forward. No more reset buttons. No more side switching. Characters using there powers to be heroic. Less Ari. Less creepy Step Dad and cheerleader near makeout sessions. More characters searching for understanding of why and what to do with their powers as opposed to being hunted down and always on the run.

    by jmyoung666

The laugh track is annoying and I wish I could eradicate it. It 's not perfect and far from the best sitcom ever (which is the laugh track riddled Newsradio), but it is enjoyable. And there are scenes that remind me of some of my acquaintances and/or friends in HS and college. No one actually acts like Sheldon does all the time, but I have seen a number of his individual idiosyncracies manifest in various people from that time.

Too much contempt for those characters, and too much baggage. GAH might have been fun to watch, but not going to invest the time to catch up, at the risk of being let down again. Killing some characters is something they should have done long ago, but now seems like a cheap trick. Can't trust them enough to think it's anything else. Big Bang Theory

    by durikaj

This show is perfect because it doesn't pander to the lowest common denominator. Monday's episode was not the strongest (that has to go to the "Rock paper scissors lizard Spock" episode I think), but I loved the relationship between Sheldon and Raj, and seeing both Raj stand up for himself and Sheldon have to admit that Raj was right (without, of course, admitting that he was wrong). This is very funny stuff, and I'm only 40 (not 60). Of course, in 10 years the networks won't care about me anymore...

    by _maltheus_

Just started watching it as a few friends kept recommending it to me and geeksploitation is indeed the right word for it. It's mildly amusing, but now I know how black people felt watching white people made up in black face singing Mamie. I guess in that sense, it has a kind of 80s/90s retro vibe to it. It just feels dated. I'm only about 6 eps in, so maybe it'll pick up for me, but I'm unlikely to rent the second season based on what I've seen so far.
I finally stopped watching Heroes before this last one, but went back to check it out based on what people were saying. It was alright, god dammit. Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.

Mostly because, for once, they don't have one of those stupid, contrived, 'save the world' plots, which manages to shoehorn everything into some silly climax. Finally, it's more about the characters again. I'm liking Peter's arc (actually heroic for once), Claire in college has some decent Buffy echoes, Hiro's actually learning something useful about life, and the deaf doctor/cellist is pretty inspired (although it seems they might be going the Dazzler route). And we're finally done with Nathan. Oh, and who doesn't love Robert Knepper and Ray Park in a transporting carnival? Of course, it reminds me how much I miss Carnivale. But I'm hoping this stays interesting, for once.

    by gotilk

I showed it to one person close to the age of 60 and the only thing she said about it was..
"Are they all gay, or just the skinny one?"
Trust me, the 60 and up crowd wouldn't be able to get a fraction of the jokes. The characters are hilarious and oddly/frighteningly accurate at times. When they make cultural or sub-cultural references, they're actually accurate for a change. Attention to detail, great writing, hilarious performances... it all adds up to a near perfect show in the vein of a Taxi or a Cheers with memorable characters you actually care about. I would say the best show on TV, ever....
    BAZINGA!

    Defending Big Bang again.

    by jayemel

Really, durikaj, the portrayal of geeks in the show is akin to racism? Either you lack a sense of reality or you lack a sense of reality. Wait, something seems off about what I just typed there.

gotilk, no one ever compared the show to classic sitcoms like Taxi, Cheers, or Friends. Personally, I wonder if the premise has a short half life a la Two and a Half Men, which wouldn't be surprising considering both shows are made by the same guy. However, I don't think I have to point out to you the irony of your using one of the show's catchphrases while mocking it.

What exactly is it about BBT that is funny? I agree with Maltheus... I don't think it's akin to racism, but I get what he or she means. It's like watching a show about geeks written by high school jocks. It's probably funny, if you're a jock (or have the need to boost your own self-esteem by making fun of geeks).
By the way, I'm guessing gotlik understood the irony and was using it to a comedic effect. Maybe he should get a job writing for BBT? :) It couldn't hurt.

...if that was you, then I meant you. Sometimes I struggle to see who posted what. Also, frozen01, if jocks were to write the show, all the characters would be completely dysfunctional, and Penny would hate them (not to mention the pop culture references wouldn't be nearly as precise as they are). The humor is in that each is an "extreme" of "geekdom" in the same way Penny is an "extreme" of "normalcy." I don't laugh because I hate the characters. I laugh because I like them. For instance, Wolowitz is funny because he's like Barney Stinson with less social ability. The outcomes to both characters schemes are irrelevant; it's just funny to see Barney dress up as future Barney and Wolowitz dress up as a Gothowitz.

Charlie just thinks shes dying of a brain tumor. As does Hiro. Their fates aren't tied together. Think of their "tumor" as their power being too great for them. After Hiro makes some past-changes, I'm pretty sure the tumor will be gone. Unless the "healer" does it first ;)

That's utter nonsense. I've known geeks all my life and, in fact, consider myself to be fairly geeky. I actually *love* the show (Big Bang Theory). I think that they do a fairly good job of representing some of the many geek quirks. But...

If you're looking for realistic representation of geeks, then why in hell are you looking for this in a sitcom? I recognize that an inherent geek trait may be that of having difficulty with context and having the propensity to be pedantic, but come on! Watch the Science Channel if you want to see real geekitude.

I agree completely. Or like a gay guy watching WILL AND GRACE. I suppose it's a step closer to acceptance, but still not quite treating geeks like actual humans.

  • Claire's roommate was the girl who had her dog kidnapped in an episode of "Veronica" and Invisible Girl was Wallace's love interest in Season Two. Any more connections between the two shows? (other than past Kristen Bell appearances, of course).

Big Bang Theory has geeks down to the wire

Just look at any "geek" posts on any website, twitter, or Facebook. Some geeks think they're so cool, they even believe in the shit they're talking about.

BBT: Accurate for those born before 1980

    by mgthedj

_Maltheus_ is right, it is closer to geekdom for 80's/90's Generation X, which is standard fair for TV writers. Historically they are always off by 10-15 years, thus you get usually more period pieces (Happy Days, Wonder Years, That 70's Show). They do get their pop-culture references right, with anime references being the best example. The show's co-creator did base the characters on geeky people he knew in college, with Chuck Lorie's contribution the character Penny.-----later-----m
