Get that Nazi sniper! Bang! Mana +10. Robert Rodat penning Raimi's WoW movie?

Published at:  Oct 12, 2009 5:28:18 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I must confess I've never played World of Warcraft... not really out of any societal reason, just that I haven't been a big computer gamer since the glory days of Doom and Duke Nuke 'Em 3-D.

But I'm intrigued by the feature adaptation of that universe. I was interested when Sam Raimi signed to direct and am even more interested now that I hear that Raimi has picked Robert Rodat (best known for writing SAVING PRIVATE RYAN) to pen the screenplay.

That's quite a serious pair to put on this material and shows we're (hopefully) not going to end up with a WING COMMANDER type movie. I understand that Frank Darabont did a lot of uncredited work on SPR, but what really matters is that Raimi seems to be going for a real-deal screenwriter, not flavor of the week genre writers.

MTV got the scoop in a phoner with Raimi (click here to read their story and hear Raimi's audio) as well as details on what to expect from the adaptation. Raimi says not to expect a story fans already know, but rather something the encompasses the lands and characters of the game, but that might or might not focus on the central characters of the game. Pretty much meaning that there will be an original story put into this universe.

Thoughts?

Video game adaptations = box office poison

    by wormie1

Why do the studios persist in making movies based on video games? The only movie to crack $100m domestic was Tomb Raider. Video games have proven to be very poor source material for movies, but Hollywood seems incapable of coming up with anything original (i.e. not a sequel, remake or adaptation from another medium) these days.

a family that has lost a member to WoW and they go on an emotional quest to recover him (or her). It'll be a nice family drama. Sure, you have to play religiously to get to level 80, but once you are level capped you can seriously quit and come back whenever you wish. I'm currently taking a couple month vacation from the game in order to fully appreciate all the Fall has to offer (Uncharted, Dragon Age, MW2, AC2, etc), but I'll resubscribe when new content is released. It's a fun game that can get you hooked if you let it... but adults can clearly get their priorities straight. Play what you can, when you can, but don't let it rule your life.

    by ndally

they did uncredited rewrites MAJOR rewrites on Saving Private Ryan. So don't get all excited that the "credited" writer of SPR is writing this movie. Rodats script had to be rewritten 11 times before the producer(not Spiegs) would even buy it only to have it rewritten buy Darabont and Scott Frank. Rodats script didn't even have the opening D-Day scene or Carparso(Vin Diesels character) to name a few. World of Warcraft is just Raimi trying to make a blockbuster that isn't Spider-Man related. he's a one- blockbuster -franchise- wonder. He's trying to proove otherwise but without Spider-Man he's like Peter Jackson without Lord of the Rings. but long story short let's stop giving Rodat credit for SPR and starting giving it to Darabont and Scott Frank starting today!

    by kinguskong

Wack sammy in the head with a sock full of nickles. WoW really does have some amazing stoyline elements as all blizzard games do. if you look past the boar killing you will see something that even wow players dont do, reading TEXT. if people cared five seconds to see what they are saying instead of grabbing thier new sword and running to kill the next boar they would see its joy. alot of the first Warcraft games that were Real time stratagy rather than RPG had incredible story lines. the high elves being changed into forsaken, the demonic orcs from a differant planet shedding thier evil roots to try and become good but the over oppressive and non tolerant humans drove them from peace. Look up some of the CGI videos from the warcraft games (not World of Warcraft) mostley the ones from warcraft 3. if its done more akin to this style, it could be good. and lastly on behalf of wow, i have a lv 80 in full t8 raid gear and in my off spec full gladiator gear and i see movies every weekend with dates and get drunk with many people and occaisionally get laid. i also maintain a full time job and i play guitar in 3 differant musical groups. so to all those who have lost thier lives to wow, its just a game. i only play it as much as i play my xbox or ps3. this talkback---> FTW!

dude, that's like saying Lair is better than Super Mario Bros. 3 cause the graphics are better. There's a reason just as many people play WoW as the total subscribers to xBox live (all games), and it's cause of gameplay.

But keep playing your games with graphics that are "pretty" I'll stick with my original Star Wars and you can have your Prequels (/beatdown)

    by lastofthev8interceptors

I'm a film believer that people should play to their strengths. Hitchcock didn't go off and try to make westerns and there's nothing wrong with that at all. I wish Raimi would primarily stick to horror/comedy... lots and lots of it. Oh and I've never played WoW (wasted many hours on AoC a while back though) Are there comedy elements in WoW like in Xena? Or is it all serious?

but thats the point that WoW is horror/comedy

    by ominus

if you take the undead/forsaken/Lich King part of the Lore.Thats why i consider raimi the perfect director for it.Now if they were doing the part of the Lore about the high elves and their ancient wars,i would say that he is a bad choice for this film,Jackons or del toro whould have been better.
ofc that doesnot mean that raimi is not going to fuck up with this movie, but goddamit if he manages to pull a new AOD with bigger budget, then we will be talking about his magnum opus.

Seriously though the lore is pretty complex and not your standard fantasy fare. I would be curious to be a fly in the brainstorming sessions for the script. . .whether they go Lich King origin, or Dragons being the dictators of Azeroth, it should be intriguing. . . .

    Doubt it will work

    by cartoonfanboy

As others have stated good video games (including PC games) don't translate into good movies. I think it has something to do with the interactive format. After all the thing that makes most games worth playing is the game play. People will overlook derivative story and one dimensional characters if it's fun to play. Halo is a great example of this, fun game but laughable characters and plot. Even the better stories from guys like Bioware would make mediocre sci-fi movies at best. There are also huge differences in area's like story pacing and climax that require significant modification when adapted for film, thus you can never do a direct adaptation. Someday Hollywood might figure out how to translate the video game format but I'm not holding my breath.

CartoonFanboy Warcraft is not only consisted

    by ominus

of games.there are a lot of official books (a few of them awarded and best sellers) and comics who explore the Warcraft Lore. There is also a huge amount of artwork like paintings, sculptures etc who are also part of the whole franchise.Warcraft is a universe of unlimited source of materials to take from.
its not that they will make a movie showing dwarf hunters killing boars to gain experience. But on the other hand, i would really love to watch a battle between a fire specced mage and a demonology specced warlock.it will be an unbalanced battle but totally impressive :P

CharyouTree yes i have seen this, its very good. But if HL is going to be made into a movie someday, they definitely must rewrite the whole story and enrich it,because its crap.

yea your right dude, I think it's more of a case of what story? But to be fair I think thats what the writers at Valve are aiming for, I've read they have the whole storyline planned but could be just bullshit there probably just winging each episode! And a movie couldn't revolve around Freeman, he's never spoken it, would be like Judge Dredd taking his helmet of if he did, but if Gordan has to be in the movie I nominate Hugh Laurie, just look at some of the "House Life" pics on google.

I demand the following from any WoW movie:

    by royston lodge

    - A wussy human priest walks up to the heroes and says, "would you please give me some gold? I need it for a quest."
    - A bulletin board with a notice which reads, "now recruiting high-powered adventurers for non-mean raiding guild."
    - A scene where the characters walk past the Redridge Community College.
    - A character named Leroy Jenkins (That should go without saying, really.)
    - At least one use of the word "pwn".
    - Sitting around the campfire, a human character tells the story of The Brotherhood of the Bracelet.
    - Soundtrack by Level 80 Elite Tauren Chieftain

Great, so instead of adapting the MMORPG they adapt a sub-par fantasy novel. Even though thats probably a step up I still seriously doubt it will make a worthwhile movie. There are tons of fantasy books that would make better films and the idea that WoW would be made instead because it's also a popular online game doesn't increase my confidence in the least.

Vidoe games are execellent source material, there unfortunately hasn't been a studio that actually used it. Studios have epicly changed fundament plot points to entire story lines from games and have put out sub par movies. That is the reason these movies have failed not because they were based on video games.

    by adelai niska

shouldn't Starcraft or Diablo be first in line? Both are badass, and WoW has a serious "pathetic loser" stigma attached to it, even if people do say it's good/fun/whatever. (PS. I've never played it or seen anyone play it so in full disclosure I pretty much have no opinion on the actual world or story or content of the game)

    by royston lodge

Set within the Greyhawk mythos, and exploring all the tidbits of story that Gygax liked to hint at but never explored fully, like the ancient war with the rain of colorless fire, the racial conflict between the different human factions in the Flaeness, and stuff like that.

    Wing Commander? urgh

    by betasword

Well, I played Wing Commander, and the first WC-Movie was mainly a failure.
Especially: Ship-Design for the Carrier(not being true to the Source, but a Cigar), Submarine-Like Acoustic detection(Hello! They're in Space, even when they are in a Nebular, there's no way, that this would be such a big Problem, the Author failed with that), too less ships(During all WC-Titles, I've played, the Player got better ships), a SciFy-Bulldozer removing the wreck from the Landing-Bay(Shouldn't they rather have it taking the Wreck inside, so that the Pilot might be saved + Spare Parts for other Fighters).

If they'd make a new WingCommander, then they should make a Reboot.

A challenge they haven't figured out yet...

    by tes_735

Games like WoW or Half Life (I want to direct that movie, fark everybody else!) are egocentric. What that means is the person playing is seeing everything through their own life filters more than you usually do on a 4th wall movie. The writers, as good as they are, haven't figured out how to make a character that we as viewers can "see through." That's why that short Escape from City17 works... they didn't use Gordon. It gets even more freakin' complicated when we're talking about WoW because there's NO central character! Hell, on second thought, maybe that'll make it easier. In any case, if they fuck it up, it'll probably be some producers fault, not Raimi's

I mean, since X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter would probably cost too much to license from George...
