1.7 (1.6) (1.7) (1.6) The Vampire Diaries
1.1 (1.2) (1.2) (1.2) Supernatural
(----) (1.8) (1.8) (2.0) SNL Thursday

Figures in grey are for repeats. Find all of the Reporter’s story on the matter here.

* The hour-long Jim/Pam wedding episode gave “The Office” its best numbers of the season.

* “FlashForward” fell another 19%, losing definitively for the first time to “Survivor.”

* With the collapse of “FastForward,” timeslot competitor “Bones” was up and “Parks and Recreation” drew its best number of the season.

* The return of Leonard Nimoy as William Bell failed to keep “Fringe” from its worst overnight score yet.

* “Supernatural,” already way down from last season, hit its season low even as its “Vampire Diaries” lead-in rose a notch.

it just goes up against other good shows, Nielsen ratings are out of date, they need to take into account for DVRs. I tape 2 shows that are on at 9, and then watch a third On Demand.....technology is killing good shows because the ratings system sucks balls

    by rongorongomu

I was so on board with the premise, but it has been squandered in these last two episodes with subplots that have no forward momentum. I'll keep watching, but I'm entirely underwhelmed and now regret recommending it to as many people as I did.

    by zod_

I like quite a few of those shows, and I think the networks should of spread them out a little more. As the first half of the week, there's not much on. I thin I read supernatural was written to be 5 seasons, so hopefully they give it a noble end. They shouldn't of moved fringe to thursdays, too many other programs to compete with. You're just asking people to DVR it, or watch something else.

    by growltiger

I would expect the non-fangirl fair to experience lower ratings moving into sweeps.

I am so happy that NBC does not have baseball this year. They would probably cancel it because demos would find the action to dark and gritty. Either that or they would interrupt the games to show Leno.

    by boe

How is Parks slowly increasing in popularity and Community is decreasing? Parks is moronic by comparison.

If Fringe goes down it will because Fox moved it Thursdays. They should move it to some other day of the week now before it falls off the map.

    by so_here_i_am

Did it? It doesn't look like it according to the list. In fact, it looks like Community is down by almost half since the premiere. But I didn't read the article - the link took me to an article about "Jack" or something.

I do blame Fringe partly for Supernatural's decline and maybe even vice versa. I kinda wish Supernatural was on cable. Maybe it'd get a little more respect. Why the hell is Syfy showing Ghost Whisperer reruns, by the way? Why not Supernatural?

    Regarding DVR and Tivo

    by frodofraggins

While I agree that nielsens are outdated, people that DVR and Tivo get to SKIP commercials so I can see where they wouldn't be counted for much. The whole point of ratings is to use them to sell ad space.
What I'd like to see is atleast let Cable providers allow all their subscribers to let their live watching stats be taken. It would have to be voluntary but it would allow for a HUGE sample size that could be easily automated. I assume there would be no easy way to do that for satellite subscribers.

    Reading Flash Forward

    by boe

I started reading the book after seeing the pilot of the show. Then I stopped watching the show. The book has some great material - I can see why they thought it would make for a good series. Somehow the show just doesn't do it for me. I think part of it is the six month timeframe (the book had it at twenty years). It feels boldly contrived to set the event date to coincide with the end of the season. Also, I'm sorry but I just don't understand who though Joseph Fiennes would make a good hero - the guy is weak.

    Flash Forward and Lost

    by throwmetheidol

Also Lost worked on two levels. It had a complicated long term plot but it also was about people stranded on an island trying to survive which was simple to grasp and immediate. You don't have to care about The Others or Dharma etc to enjoy Lost - for the first couple of seasons at least you can enjoy it on the simple level of interesting characters trying to get along and find a way home.

Nielsen samples a very small margin of the pop.

    by kimrae1977

How many "Nielsen families" are there?

There are 5,000 households in the national People Meter sample, approximately 20,000 households in the local metered market samples, approximately 1,000 metered homes for our national and local Hispanic measurement, and nearly 1.6 million diaries are edited each year.

    Lost v FF

    by miyamoto_musashi

Lost started with a small story, which over time became bigger, but at the end of the day its still about a small group of people.
FF started huge, everyone in the world affected, but they need to make it a smaller story about a group of people who we will care about. Very difficult undertaking to balance that for the small screen. And for me its beyond the likes of Braga and Goyer.

    by american mythos

funny new show of the season. I hate that it's clumped into an hourlong slot with Parks and Rec (could that be why there was a huge dropoff between last week's and this week's Community ratings?) As has been said before, Amy Poeler isn't funny--she's just weird. If NBC suits are looking to trim the fat at the end of the season, and it comes down to a choice between Community and Parks, god let it be the latter.

    by smackfu

would be declining because the show has jumped up 100% in quality so far this season. And it was already pretty damned awesome to begin with. Anyway, regardless of whether you're a Supernatural fan or not, you have to agree that the Vampire Diaries having better ratings than it is one of the signs of the apocalypse. That show shouldn't even be in that list, I simply can't believe there is that disproportionate a distribution of Nielson boxes that so many 12 year old girls seem to be in possession of them.

Every other show can only try to compete but never win. BUT I'm willing to give FF my leap of faith, that I will be rewarded with very interesting hours of entertainment. So far I'm good with their storytelling and I will stay with FF as long as it stays I think. Don't like? Don't watch! I stay! And give MJ back to Peter Parker!!! Flashforward needs some work,

    by ballyhoo

but it easily could be a very good show. I can't remember anything significant happening last week. And this week, the only major thing revealed was that this has happened before, on a smaller scale. Nice tease, but I waited 55 minutes to get to it, and had to pass the time with a drawn out Nazi A-plot, and some uninteresting B-plots. I am already getting tired of the "Wait a second! That lead was in my vision, so it must be important!" motivation. Investigations follow bad leads all the time, just because he was looking into something in the future, doesn't mean it was necessarily valid. I think it would have been a great twist if it turned out that all his leads were wild goose chases, and the only reason he ever followed them was because he saw himself following them. But alas, that has already been screwed up.

Why all the P&R hate from Community fans?

    by burgundy82

BOTH shows are great this year. Only difference is that Community is having a really strong first season whereas it took P&R until Season 2 to find its groove. Did any of you people slagging P&R actually watch it this week? The conceit of having everyone in the office dig up dirt on each other was incredibly funny. Anzari KILLS it on that show week after week, and now that Louis CK is on there (playing AGAINST type, no less) the show is a powerhouse. I really hope both shows survive. Because of NBC (and It's Always Sunny on FX) Thursday is far and away the funniest night of the week.

I'm always shocked at the amount of gore they can get away with on the show, and anybody who can saw off a vampires head while throwing out a one liner like "eat it Twilight",is fucking right up there with Ash in my book of horror icons. Any so called horror movie being released this year would kill for writting like this series. And by the way,JettL,go fuck yourself man. by veritasses

Mostly because of really bad writing and directing. It has no suspense, no characters I care about, nothing that stimulates the mind or emotions and the "mysteries" about the individual Flashforwards are as boring as can be etc. It's just (yet again) really bad execution on an interesting idea. They have some good actors on the show but you'll never see them at their best because of the bad writing/directing. A shame.

And what was that bullshit with them just letting the Nazi out after he failed to live up to his end of the bargain? Made absolutely no sense. And Fiennes is really lousy - the pensive scowling and growl talking. I like Cho, but he is so stiff and humorless (bad writing and direction). I would like to see where they are going to take the arc, but not enough to watch it.

Tough week for the show since it was moved to a different time slot; however, it didn't drop too much which is a good thing. The Office was great except for the ridiculously over the top wedding aisle scene. What were they thinking? It was just stupid.

P&R realize they have a star in Tom. The fact that his wife is now a "green card" marriage allows a lot of freedom for the writers.

    Smallville -- Lois

    by ryanbraun14

The new showrunners took over last season and it was great. However, last season was going so damn good and had great momentum and then we had a several episode lana arc with frutstrated me sooo much. This season its clear they're trying to really get the guy to be superman, but unfortunately the old showrunners screwed the show's future. The biggest problem was that clark didn't have glasses... it could have worked if you had lois meet a geekier clark (or even fiction-geek--geeky w/glasses, good looking w/o glasses). I can live with that. The sad part is that the character lois and the way durance plays lois is one of the things the show has done the best at... smallville's lois is a legit lois lane in every way--but, again because of the old showrunners, lois' character has gotten a little fucked up--since there's no way for lois NOT to see superman and recognize him as clark, so lois is apparantly falling in love with a guy she's never met, never heard his voice, never seen in person, never shared any personal experiences and has no clue what his personality is like. It really hurts the character of lois. Smallville has NAILED green arrow in every way... i'd really like to see a nightwing show, but green arrow could be great.

repeats on Friday and is available online after it airs (most shows are). I'm not excusing anything but have they started taking that stuff into account when they're doing the ratings? Because what if 1/4 of the people who watch it are busy on Thursday and just go "oh I'll catch it Friday" or "I'll just watch it online"? I think it's a decent show and would at least like to see where it's going. I wouldn't want it to get canceled.

But I'll give them a pass, they obviously felt like they had to do something big fir the episode...and that's what we got. Andnit must be great to have a character like Michael, anytime the writers need funny they can just lean on "Michael's" lack of creativity and have him ripoff...or parody/borrow/etc something funny that other people came up with.

Nimoy on Fringe has been b.s.

    by mazzke

I like that they cast him, but the way they've used him has been completely unsatisfying to the point of being insulting. All of the Nimoy hype involves nothing more than one fairly brief scene that occurred at the end of last season. The rub is that they didn't really show most of the scene and have been revealing the it in pieces over multiple episodes. I don't mind watching characters solve deep mysteries gradually over time, but the type of unnecessarily throttled revelation is completely contrived. To give her "travel amnesia" just so they can milk a single scene for multiple episodes is ridiculous. If they don't want people to dropping the show, which seems to be what is happening, perhaps they should respect them enough not to cheaply manipulate them.

    As I Have Often Said..

    by karuma

...and will continue to do so until people wake up, these numbers mean nothing. Look at total viewers. (In Millions) Survivor 11, Flashforward 9.05, Bones 9.92, Community 5.11, Vampire Diaries 3.52. If you were an advertiser where would you put your money? Certainly not on Vampire diaries no matter what the overrated 18-49 demo number says, because just as many if not more 18-49 are watching CBS, NBC, and ABC. Why? Because the older people who fill out the ratings have 18-22 year old's at home who watch with them, that's why, and 18-49 year old's don't have any extra money. Besides, 18-49 year old's aren't home on Fridays and if they are, they are watching what their children or parents want to watch. Who watches commercials anymore anyway? I certainly don't. We DVR everything except sports. And I suspect a lot more viewers do the same thing but don't report it. Final nail. Total viewers-ABC 15 million. ABC 11, Fox 10. NBC 5, CW 2. Now, again, where would you put your advertising dollars? And if you say the CW, you would be fired.

I think people kinda missed the point of the wedding intro dance

    by burgundy82

It was supposed to make you smile a bit, sure, but the real point was how profoundly LAME of an idea it is to tarnish someone's wedding ceremony by copying a YouTube video whose whole appeal was its originality. Not only was it completely in character for Michael, it was also the single least creative thing that could transpire at a wedding -- which contrasted nicely with the intimacy of Jim and Pam's secret nuptials. As soon as that original video (which I loved) hit YouTube, I thought to myself, "Someone else -- someone unfunny and awful -- is going to insist on copying this. And it's going to be the most eyeroll-inducing thing ever." Looks like the Office writers were thinking the exact same thing, and they knew it had to be Michael.

Yeah, but also the dancing was a little sweet as well. I liked the idea that after everyone in the office had been so rude and obnoxious they organized a charming (though entirely unoriginal and ridiculous) way to express their happiness for the couple. Occasionally the show feels like the characters don't actually like one another. I had never seen the youtube video so I was more perplexed than anything for the first couple minutes - once I got the hang of what they were doing, I found it pretty winning; particularly when balanced against the shots of the boat ceremony.

Supernatural's drop in ratings this year may be in part

    by big jim

to having to compete with Fringe this year. I'm sure a considerable chunk of Supernatural's audience is also part of Fringe's and a decision on which to watch "live" has to be made.Flashforward's drop in ratings are, I believe, in part of its audience discovering it is being repeated on Friday and watching that broadcast instead. by shoe1985

If this was 5 years ago, these shows would all be canceled. These shows cost a lot of money to produce, and if people are not watching the commercials during first run, no advertiser is going to want to put their ads on low rating shows. I wouldn't be shocked if a lot of these shows are canceled because of this. If you are downloading these shows, and wondering why they get canceled, get a clue. The commercials pay for the show.

P&R benefitted from SNL Thursdays ending

    by rob0729

SNL Thursday was a ratings bomb. NBC should have known that it was a bad idea to run with it in an non-election year. SNL, the mothership, always gets a huge bump in election years and then drops off especially if they don't have a good President parody going on. Obama hasn't given them good enough material and Fed Armistan hasn't made him funny in any way (Dana Carvey always hit gold with his charicture of Bush Sr. even on the weakest sketches just because his impression was so good in a funny way).
Now that P&R has a stronger lead in, it will have better ratings going forward.
Onto other shows. Got FLashForward DVRed, but haven't watched past the first episode. I think Fringe shot themselves in the foot by not making this week's episode the first episode of the season. I think many fans were pissed off that they didn't address the alternative universe and William Bell right off the bat and then waited a month to reveal it. It could loose even more audience next week because it seems that they are going back to the monster of the week format again and putting William Bell/the war with the alternate universe back on the back burner.

Complaints About Flash Forward Being too Slow...

    by jaydog

...really should be tabled until around episode 6 or 7 which will coincide with November sweeps. The show was not designed to be a miniseries with a 4-8 hour run, so obviously the show is going to show all of its cards in the first 3 or four weeks. It has an interesting premise, has already had a few surprises, and some strong actors. And by November they will likely move it along at a faster clip. If they don't, then yeah, I'll be the first one to complain, a la "The Nine". Geez, what a pointless piece of crap that was, lol. -J.

Has NOT been spot on. Ollie in the comics states that compound bows are for pussies, and he never had a drinking/addiction problem. While I love the fact the GA is on Smallville, they haven't done his character justice. However, that's the Smallville way.

As far as Lois, yeah, she's been great through the whole series. However, I disagree with the Clark/Lois/Supes thing. She's been talking to Supes via phone. Will probably find out he's the Blur avoiding the whole melodrama of the Clark vs Supes romantic interlude, which is fine by me. I'm curious as to where they'll go with it this season and next.

It was kinda nice to see SUpernatural going back to its roots this week, while i love the whole god/lucifer/angels storyline, i do miss the nasty as fuck monsters we used to get each week. Hopefully might get to see a few more before the show comes to a triumphant end that will be ignored by this site as usual.

    Supernatural & Thursday nights

    by ill_have_a_coke

Supernatural is one of the best shows I've ever experienced. The overall story arc has been great and the monster-of-the-week episodes are kickass (beheading Paris Hilton was fun to watch). It is exploring some heady shit this season. I am consistently amazed at what a great show it is and equally shocked at how it gets no love from AICN and other viewers. I will watch it and DVR other shows or watch online (Fringe, FlashForward). It could still continue after this season. The statement was that the current story line will wrap up after this season, but that the show could still continue. The preview from last Thursday was awesome. Some great episodes to come. Here's hoping for season six.

    One more time networks

If you're going to do genre, follow the number one rule (actually, drill it into your think skulls!): Mythology, the core of all genre, takes time to build. Give it that time and focus on action and mystery over TMI. 2nd rule: Stop this Thursday pile-on crap ASAP - or wait until we have quad DVR's. Nobody has any money to go out so, hey! We're home! And knock off the pipe when making the line-up grid and spread the goodies out. 3rd rule: Hire people who're into this shit to begin with.
