Neil Marshall And Sam Raimi Are Gonna BURST (In 3-D)!!

Published at:  Oct 09, 2009 11:48:40 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Earlier this week we saw some images from Neil Marshall's yet to be released CENTURION (HERE). Although that title is still making its way to screens, Marshall's already setting his sights on his next project - a 3-D movie called BURST.

Ghost House partners Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will produce, and Nathan Kahane will be executive producer. Script is written by Gary Dauberman.

A group of stranded travelers meet during a blizzard and get stalked by a malevolent force that makes people spontaneously combust.

...says Variety HERE.

While completely unrelated to BURST, here's a look at the making of Marshall's CENTURION (didn't get incorporated into our article a few days ago).

seriously, it is a gimmick that adds almost nothing but $3 to my bill when I walk into the theater. If Avatar, which is completely designed for 3D, further makes 3D look like a gimick I'm giving up on the technology

....Avatar, I'm NOT looking atchoo come cinema release day. As for Neil, Dog Soldiers and Descent were awesome. Looking forward to his centurian pic. As to anything after I'm 3D, call me close minded, call me a cinematic bigot, call me shortsighted, call me an enormously well endowed love god if you must - but I'm still not checking it out til it's a DVD rental. And I'm not using those fucking stupid glasses. So it's all lost on me, lost I tells ya! Now fuck off. You kids and your 3D.

Doomsday hurt his rep among a lot of genre fans

    by hint_of_smegma

Seems so anyway, people bitch about it everywhere. Yes it sucks more balls than Pam Anderson's chin has ever seen, but it was only one misstep. That said, going the 3D route is not a good move to repair his rep. Hopefully his centurian flick will mitigate it - bring his stock up before the 3D fall, so to speak.

    by fart_master_flex

Better than it use to be, but still not necessary. It always seems to mute the screen. I saw Up twice in the theater, once in 3D and once without on a digital screen. The non-3D version was crisp and vibrant while the 3-D version's colors were muted.

Hate to say it myself but Doomsday was terrible and the only good part of it was Rhona Mitra's ass in spandex. I won't slag Marshall off fir the movie, as I've said it was his only misstep so far so he's earned a lot of credit as far as I'm concerned, but 'Burst' in 3D is a worrying direction. I'm hoping he goe back to the Lovecraftien western myself, too.

    by charlesbronsonlives

i read this script a couple of weeks back and was pretty interested by the wacked out randomness of the violence, but the characters are like shells of characters. just a bunch of dipshits who argue about the insane situation in front of them as if someone might actually come up with a good reason why everyone is exploding.
hopefully with marshall attached, the script will get a proper re-write to atleast make me give a slight shit about the exploding rednecks.

    by senzafine

Because Dog Soldiers and The Descent were just that good. You'd think Uwe Boll directed Doomsday with how bad people bashed it, but I think it stems more from disappointment in Marshall taking a misstep after two awesome movies. Doomsday is hit and miss, yeah, but it's not this unwatchable piece of shit everyone seems to make it out to be.

I can see it now nightvision audience trailer with the characters screaming and farting/sharting in terror with the audience puking and barfing and holding their noses while cover their faces as the 3d shart juice comes at them. Gallagher shows up for the win killing the shart attack monster with a sledge-o-matic. the audience is surprised by shat colored squib like spewers attached to the seats in front of them. each ticket comes with a plastic bag to cover yourself with.

    by cmdx

The 'silver' screen does add to the contrast a little and it is great seeing digitally projected non-3D stuff in those theaters, but the filter in front of the projector and then the glasses you use remove 50%-75% of the light coming from the projector. Basically to get you a satisfactory level of light you need a projector with a much more powerful lamp than 'normal', and guess how many theaters are going to do that?Add onto that problems with ghosting and you are basically talking about a subpar movie viewing experience in general.Although if a filmmaker wanted me to see a movie in 3D and designed their movie for 3D I'm not going to go see it in 2D. At least not on first viewing.

The only credible (horror) genre director; DOG SOLIDERS is a certified sleeper (premiered on the Sci-Fi Channel! Knew it couldn't be an in-house production ). THE DESCENT is an undiluted classic (a bit flawed but far superior to the Zombie bilge, remakes, et al. See [only] the British, unedited release w/ the ORIGINAL ending). Marshall and Stuart Gordon are the Horror Cinema's genuine auteurs--accept no imtations.

3d as an alternative is fine, but shouldn't be required

    by jack burton

My problem with 3D is there is so much disconnect between the viewer and the movie, at least for me. By wearing the glasses I'm much more aware of watching a movie than normal. Maybe it's just me but it interferes with my ability to just get lost in what is one screen. And until they perfect 3D without needed peripherals, it's just not going to catch on at home either. Most people do other things while watching TV or movies. Dealing with glasses at the same time? Not happening. Will go the way of Divx and laser disc through lack of interest. Just watch.

    3D is getting better

    by tatoosh

I've been watching 3D movies in the same theater for over a year, and it seems that each movie shows an incremental increase in the brightness and color. Saw the 2 toy stories last week and they were as bright and as crisp 'n clear as you could possibly imagine. Some of the movies that were released a year or two ago did suffer from some wash-out, but I think the filmmakers are fixing that with newer releases. I don't blame it on the theater or the screen...I've only seen 3d in my one local theater. I don't understand all the 3D hating on these talkbacks. I want to see all of my films in 3D now. I'm looking forward to Cinema Verite style films shot in 3D.

    LD... Lack if interest? Hardly...

    by replica

Hardly. That's why it had an almost 25 year run. And if it weren't for LD fans embracing the lesser expensive DVD over VHS, DVD might have taken much longer to gain acceptance. Bottom line retailer did not like carrying LD because of shipping and displays costs. VHS and DVD were more attractive and profitable. And if it weren't for many of the special edition carry overs from LD, DVD would likely just be VHS 2.0. It was the LD fanatics and their/our relentless pursuit of the best it can be home theater performance that has led to the home theater boom. Whether you like 3-D or not it's going to be around for a
while. With the BO numbers that have been put up recently by films like FD 3-D it's hard to argue against it whether you like the idea or not.
