NBC Cancels SOUTHLAND!!

Published at:  Oct 08, 2009 10:47:04 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

NBC has cancelled both “Southland” and plans to air “Southland” on Fridays this autumn.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

While "Southland" enjoyed support among NBC brass last season, after screening the finished episodes from the upcoming second season, the show's content was deemed too dark and gritty for broadcast TV, especially for 9 p.m. Additionally, a high-end drama like "Southland" is certainly far more expensive than newsmagazine "Dateline" for low-trafficked Friday night.

Six unaired second-season episodes are in the can. NBC is currently airing repeats of “Law & Order SVU” Saturdays at 10 p.m.

NBC has also cancelled Chuck, Heroes, Law and Order, The Office, Trauma, Mercy, Parenthood and Community and will be replacing it at 8pm M-F with 5 nts of Happy Hour with Carson Daley, followed at 9 by repeats of Dateline NBC on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Biggest Loser will stay put on Tuesdays and Thursdays will see the addition at 9 of their brand new "Spencer Pratt Show starring Jon Gosselin".

    by shabbyblue

I recall the network hyping it as the new great drama that was going to replace ER last year once ER finished. Pretty sad how it only got 7 episodes its first season and then gets cancelled a couple weeks before its 2nd season premiere.

Southland was a cop show with some innovation, really gritty and... wait for it... IT WAS ACTUALLY FUCKING INTERESTING AND ENTERTAINING! I've been waiting for Southland to come back all year, it had great acting and some really scary cop situations that were fun to watch play out. ugh. completely ridiculous. Network TV is dead. LENO will be the death of NBC. They've realized they can downsize their programming to bare-bones talent with super cheap overhead then make up their revenue with way-too-expensive advertising. LENO will turn a profit of 300 Million if it keeps a 1.5 average all year? What the FUCK. Television needs some fucking quality control or else we'll have Ellen, Opera and The View in prime time when we COULD have actual entertainment. FUCK. this just ruins my week. assholes.

I'm sorry, I've never watched Southland, and I never really intended to, but "too gritty for 9 pm" that's bullshit. That's a cop-out (no pun intended) excuse that they can only justify because for some ungodly reason they're still backing Leno's abortion of a show that took the 10 pm slot.

I'm shocked that Heroes is still on the air considering how awful it continues to be. I like how they cancel shows when they're "too gritty" but when they're "FUCKING AWFUL DERIVATIVE BULLSHIT" they get picked up for 5 seasons and every pats the back for a job well done. i'll bet he watched the canned episodes and was worried it would be too "dark and gritty" and wouldn't serve as a good lead in for his 10pm light and airy crapfest, so he put the kibosh on it. The NBC suits are so far up his ass they probably went along with it, to say nothing of the fact they seem to have bet the whole g-damn farm on his show and are probably paranoid as hell to start with that it's not gonna make a 1.5 rating every night and make them some money. It's a sad situation, thank God for cable...

    Friday nights: an open letter

    by adelai niska

Here's a free tip for TV executives: If a show is one of the most expensive to produce, don't put it on the night with the lowest audience. Because you will not turn a profit. Your monetary investment will be wasted. From a purely business standpoint, Friday is for reality shit, Mon-Thurs is for more expensive shows. Got the concept? P.S., NBC should forward this letter to FOX, who have put expensive sci-fi shows on Fridays for about ten years now.

The curse of Ben Silvermann continues

    by rob0729

Wow! What one man has done to destroy a complete network. The Leno decision has complete fucked everyone associated with NBC. The Law and Order franchise has already got to shit because of their moves to a crowded 9PM on Wednesday (SVU) and purgatory on Friday (the mothership). Affiliates local news across the country have had ratings drops of 20% or more. Conan's ratings are going to pot. Other series that might thrive at 10PM are getting killed because they are forced to compete in more competitive hours. Now Southland is being axed before they even air the series because they don't have a timeslot that they can air the show without getting backlash.
The Leno move may single handily destroy this network. They have already been surpassed by Fox to become the fourth network. At this rate, the CW could be competiting with them for fourth within a couple of years.
I give it a month before the affiliates either become vocal and complain about Leno or do what Boston was originally going to do and pull Leno all together to air local news at 10PM. The 11PM news is a big revenue generator for local TV stations that are affiliates to either NBC, ABC, or CBS (10PM News is the same for Fox). Ad revenues are going to drop exponentially for NBC affiliates because of Leno.

    by rob0729

I don't blame Leno for this, but I do blame the move to make Leno at 10PM for this. That isn't Leno's fault. It is Ben Silvermann who jumped ship before the fruits of his labor (or shit) could hit the fan. Leno was offered the 10PM slot and he took it. It isn't his fault that offering Leno the 10PM slot was monumentally stupid to begin with.
The theory of putting Leno at 10PM was that he was cheap because he is making about as much as Charlie Sheen is and he does as many episodes that Sheen does in a year in one month or less. When you factor that Two and a Half Men is a half hour vs. an hour for Jay, Leno gives the same amout of time of TV broadcasting time in two weeks as Charlie Sheen does in an entire year. What the NBC executives failed to account for was how would moving Leno to 10PM would affect their current 10PM dramas, local affiliates news, and their late night line up. So far it is a disaster worse than even the cynics imagined.

Rumor has it that drug addiction killed Southland

    by johnnyangel

"This B- list television actor is one of the leads on a big hit network drama. One of those police type shows. Our actor has not shown up on set for almost two weeks. It isn't about contracts or anything like that. Nope. It is because he is on the drug bender to end all benders and won't stop using. Producers are getting worried because they need him on set and functioning soon or they are going to have some huge story gaps that will need explaining."

    by cartoonfanboy

Though I agree with just about all your views on religion and religious institutions Asimov I can't help but chuckle at the irony of all this. What you have done here is preach at people, telling them just how absurd their beliefs really are (and make no mistake you are preaching). While I agree with that the fact that you have taken such a black and white, I'm right and you're wrong, stance on the subject shows just how narrow minded you are in your non-belief. In essence you have condemned, damned if you will, people of faith for believing in something you don't.

All that's left is for you to gather the rest of us non-believers and kill off the heretics. Of course there will be the inevitable dissention among us, leading to splintered groups with different views of the same basic thing. We'll probably get into some fights over that ... wiat isn't this an episode of South Park?

.....will never be equaled, especially on network T.V. Still, Southland was decent, if not great, and I believe it had potential to be pretty good. I liked most of the cast (especially Regina King), and I liked that it tried to be a little different from the typical network cop show. Network t.v. with all of it's silly "reality" shows, and unfunny comedies, is becoming more of a vast wasteland than ever. And right now, NBC is the worst!

    Miles Teg...

    by furzee

Totally agree man. I think a mini series or some kind of wrap up would have been nice. As of now I thinkk The Office is the only thing I watch on NBC right now. The Leno backlash has got to hit soon. I hope, he sucks it.

    The OC curse

    by boe

The OC was unstoppable for the first couple of season. The four leads all looked like they were going to be stars and now they are nowhere. Bilson seems like the one with the best shot at becoming something (very hot, that one).

"Dark & Gritty" is a crap excuse.

    by big jim

Mostly because they are, to me, simply buzzwords, and partly because they are subjective. Honestly, what does it even mean? Does it mean it is too violent, too gory, a lot of drug use, profanity? I would never describe The Wire as "dark & gritty" yet am fully aware it could not run on NBC. I'm even more interested now in seeing these episodes (really enjoyed the first mini-season of the show). I would like to understand where NBC is coming from or see if they are just full of crap. Last night's Supernatural depicted a decapitation, complete with a big blood-splatter and a lingering shot the the severed head. That's a 9:00 pm show but it was done in a somewhat humorous (no matter how sick) way, and it is on the CW not NBC. Does that make a difference?

    Mercy

    by andy_dufresne

I actually like Mercy quite a bit. It's not nearly as soapy as that shit show Grays Anatomy. The lead actress has a really interesting character and Michelle Trachtenberg is a pill. The show mixes pathos with comedy pretty well and the only thing that I really don't care for is the McDreamy Dr. the main character had an affair with when she was stationed in Iraq.

I Liked It Better When It Was Called The Shield

    by wrath4771

I saw the first two episodes and gave up on it. I could see what they were trying for and though I thought they would fall short on their own, I knew NBC would never give it a real shot. NBC is to the point they should just show reruns of The Cosby Show and Family Ties.

So how fucked up IS NBC?

    by non-american

How many times does NBC have to put a show on, let it find an audience, let everyone get comfortable in their skin, then watch the ratings grow before they realize THIS IS THE PROCESS!!! NOT this idiotic cannibalistic "If it's not a 40 share for the first six episodes, it dies!" attitude. NBC deserve to tank, and I think Leno's leading the march off the cliff, and the stupid fuckers are happy about it. Let 'em go.

There needs to be a revolution in TV

    by spectrebeeyatch

I'm serious these suits ass holes base EVERYTHING off small core of viewers. They ask old shits in the Mid-west what they are watching and base everything on them. WHY? Those people are idiots they don't like "challenging" or "dark" material that is why CBS has huge ratings. They need to change everything and stop being lazy. Look at online numbers. HULU will save shows if they actually cared to see how many people tune in online. I never watch shows when they air I'm either working or watching football or baseball at that time. They need to expand to see who is watching what instead of killing off the good shows and leaving the shit for the mid-west on.

    by lockesbrokenleg

They show repeated footage of gruesome murder scenes. The Unit was also a pretty dark show. Southland was like Brady Bunch compared to some of the shit I've seen on CSI.

What next NBC? Replace the peacock with a phoenix?

    by growltiger

This is sad. NBC programming is bankrupt and hamstrung. What were they thinking? How can they only now realize that they committed to programming which they are unable to air.
The sad thing is that I bet Wells & company lightened up the content for the new airtime. Sadder still I bet NBC is so hamstrung by their format that they may have nothing in the pipeline that fits their format.
How did it come to pass that the network that brought us L.A. Law, e.r., Hill Street Blues is no longer in a position to program drama? Wow, it must be like the end of the world over there.

Is anyone suprised given NBC history

    by fenroth

This is the same network that cancelled Freaks and Geeks, now look at the profitability of Apatow and friends. They also gave Homicide a hard time when it was on, and it was critically acclaimed as well. Someone needs to take these good cancelled shows to another network, let them grow there then crap on NBC when they run wild at the Emmy's. Not FX, AMC, etc. doing well at the Emmy's but no more Seinfelds, Cheers, etc. anymore. Also, NBC is not realizing the audience growth from DVD's. These networks are too reactive when they should just wait it out a little more than half a season...

Make it like some stupid funniest crap "reality" show. Then follow it with two hours of dramas.

Keep beating us over the heads with those dead dogs called "Heroes" and the Leno show. But good shows like "Life" and "Southland" get tossed out like a used condom. No wonder they're in the toilet. Hope it gets picked up by FX or AMC then it can comeback and win a ton of Emmys.

    TV is DEAD

    by cherryvalance

Seriously. It's all over. That was a good show and they're getting rid of it because of Leno. Many people including myself are over watching shows at the same time every week and are perfectly willing to wait for DVD. Don't ask me how there will be shows to watch on DVD if they don't air on TV first but it's all over. It's just going to take time to actually peter out. LOST is my last event TV show. I'm watching Flashforward because I'm bored. But I don't care if I miss it because I can catch it on Friday or online. I'm kinda surprised how fast this is happening though. I thought it would take longer for the internets to completely take over.

    It Was Pretty Fucked Up

    by crow3711

One of the grittiest and most fucked shows ever put on network television I'm gonna guess. I enjoyed the first in spite of myself, because cop shops are what they are...especially after The Wire...but this one was at least acceptable different and raw. I liked the handheld, gritty style and the way they swore and beeped it out, they made an attempt to be real. Too bad this gets cancelled when CSI: Lake Erie will probably be coming on the air next season. Too bad.

    by jjwalrus

I was rooting for this to be cancelled. Hated ER and it's Gunsmoke like run. I REALLY hated Third Watch and it's generic characters. I was hoping that this one wouldn't make it so I am glad. It looked like Third Watch 2.0 mixed with a poor man's version of Training Day. I watched one episode and thought it was more of the same shite.
