The Writer (And Maybe Director) Of The VENOM Movie Is...

Published at:  Oct 08, 2009 9:27:22 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Looks like Columbia may be closer to giving Venom his own movie.

Venom was introduced into the SPIDER-MAN film franchise via SPIDER-MAN 3, in which he was played by Topher Grace (who seemed way more alive than Maguire did in that film). It's unclear whether Grace...or a differtent actor...would portray Venom in a full-on feature built around the character.

Gary Ross is writing “Venom,” Columbia’s “Spider-Man” spinoff based on one of the villains from “Spider-Man 3,” as a potential directing vehicle. Ross is already writing “Spider-Man 4” for the studio.
[EDIT]
The studio had no comment on Grace’s involvement nor on Ross writing the project.

...says The Hollywood Reporter HERE.

Gary Ross is the most recent screenwriter charged with beating SPIDER-MAN 4 into shape . Previously he wrote and directed PLEASANTVILLE and SEABISCUIT.

I can't even remember Venom in Spiderman 3, he was handled that badly. Does he deserve his own movie? As an original villain from the comics, or as the useless shit from Emo3? When Venom first came out in the comics I would have said Fuck Yeah bring that movie on! But that was, what, 1991? or something? He was cool back then, and I suppose he could be in his own movie handled properly. But was the piece of shit called Spiderman 3 the launching point for a Venom movie. No. You dumb Hollywood fucks. Although what am I moaning for, they already made two piece of shit alien and predator movies, so fuck me and fuck you the paying public I guess. Now, where's Adrien Brody, he'll set things right...

    by dave i

I think there is some potential for the character to be a decent anti-hero. The character is not portrayed as a total monster (ala. Sabertooth or Carnage), he tries to become a good guy, has his own morals, and it could potentially be a good story. That said, I think it would take a great script, a good actor (I think Topher Grace was fine, I think he can be a very good actor), and a balance between the comic book action, skewed morality of the character, and a compelling reason for Venom to be the protagonist (as opposed to harassing Spider-man).

Nuclear Man from Superman IV: The Quest for Peace never got his own spin-off franchise so why should Venom? Also, Megan is right. Topher's balls haven't fully descended and therefore has no biz attempting Venom. He's funny and charismatic and I enjoy his work otherwise.

My cynical self suspects the Daredevil reboot

    by big jim

will largely be an origin story where he fights the Kingpin in the climax. Why? Because the majority of "creative" people who make superhero movies don't know how to tell a story that isn't an origin story. Also, they like to focus on the villain they know (the one they saw in a previous film). Even the Spider-Man films, with the many villains we've seen, have been mainly origin stories. Spider-Man 1 was his origin, along with that of the Green Goblin. #2 focused on Dock Ock's origin. #3 was how Sandman came to be, as well as Venom, and they retconned Spidey's origin with the ridiculously unnecessary Sandman connection. One thing I liked about Daredevil was the conservative use of how he came to be. If there is to be a Daredevil reboot, hopefully they adapt Miller's "Born Again" storyline.

  • I even completed an entire story outline as well as about a third of a finished script. However Sony said my idea would push the film over 150 million in terms of budget and it wasn't where they wanted to take the spiderman franchise at this point

My idea involved Venom being sent to a alternate universe at the end of spiderman 3. The movie would open minutes after spiderman 3 finished with venom arriving at the alternate universe. This alternate universe is just like our earth only with minor differances... mainly being that Characters fates and personalities are different (for example Mary Jane was killed by the mugger and thats why peter decided to fight crime, JJ jameson was also a timd man who supported spiderman). After trying to fitr into this new world Venom teams up with that worlds Green goblin, hobgoblin and doc ok (all who are still alive in this universe) to take down spiderman. In the end they do manage to kill spiderman, But they begin fighting among eachother and they realize without spiderman in their lives they have no true enemy, So eddie Brock informs them That the spiderman of his world was twice as powerful as the one they defeated and that if doc ock could find a way to conect the universes again they could all cross over and take on our world's spiderman. Eddie of course is only in it to get home and plans on double crossing the gang once he has what he wants. The film would end with the entire team making our way to our world and just as they start causing destruction Spidey shows up...The movie would end just as the fight was about to begin and the stopry would them be resolved in spiderman 5 (making Venom a sort of spiderman 4.5 if you will and more of a prequel to spidey 5 then an actual spin off) Sony said the idea was far too over the top and that the fact that The story calls for several actors to return (actors that would all demand high salaries) as well as how the story would lead into spiderman 5 (potentially shoehorning raimi and co into finishing the story, even if they didn't want to) the film just wouldn't work and they wanted the Venom movie to be in the spirt of the spdierman films but to be it's own story seperate of spiderman 4 and 5 I tried hard to push for this even getting tobey to agree to cameo (he loved the diea of a mirror iniverse psider getting killed) but Sony didn't want to take the riskI may still finish my script and maybe it will pop up online someday

    by righteousbrother

holds the Spidey films back. It was the same with the first Batman movies. Joker origin, Penquin origin, Catwoman origin, Riddler origin - they take up most of the movie. You never see origins of villains in the Bond movies, or westerns, or other action movies, you just accept that they're bad guys.

Miguel O'Hara a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099 would be a great film. While all these nerds were going gaga because Ultimate Spider-Man's origin took multiple issues Peter David already did it back in 92-93; it took Miguel O'Hara 10 issues to finally realize that with great power comes great responsibility and to start kickin ass in the name of good. And I loved the Irish/Mexican ethnicity S2099 has, but then again I think at least the Irish part was negated a little later on in a twist that was revealed in the 25th issue. And Spider-Man 2099 had a pretty damn good costume too.

    by meadowe

The only upstaging (if you can call it that) was JK Simmons doing another great performance. Raimi said he didn't want to include Venom until he saw how cool the s3 script was and its characterization of Venom was; we all know now that Raimi was just hustling for the movie. S3 Brock was an ass kissing back stabbing stalker; Raimi said he was what Peter Parker would be if he didn't have good parents. But all I saw was a guy that doqtored photos, had no game for women and stalked them when rejected. Peter's landlord and his daughter were better characters than Brock.

Acting does not exist in this dojo

Tobey Maguire is a practitoner of 'internalized acting'. Just like De Niro and Redford. Where without dialogue, or obvious facial expressions they can convey to the audience what the character is feeling and thinking. Using only their eyes and the most subtle of movements.
Only problem is, he is shit at it.

I would rather see Guardian Devil be made into a movie or a TV series and continue from there through Brubaker's first Arc. A complete recast as well.

    John Goodman as King Pin
    Michael Vartan as Matt/Daredevil
    Robert Knepper as Bullseye
    Patton Ozwald as Foggy
and HRG from heroes as Ben Urich.

Spiderman was great, 2 was better

    by powerring

Spiderman 1 had a superb story. The weaknesses were the then-new special effects and the shitty green goblin. Spiderman 2 was a fucking masterpiece. Spiderman 3 was incredibly fucking bad. Poorly done villains, convoluted script and hyper-gay dance routine. So, when spidey has the venom suit on he becomes a flaming colon diver? What happened to remorseless badass instead of broadway dance number? Sandman could have been the lone villain and wrecked half the city. Venom could have been the lone villain and the story would have had more focus. Instead it was like the contents of a lower intestine after a buffet. A confused mass of shit.

The actor i hear the studio is interested in is Jake Gylenhall and that a mentor role is being written in hopes that Danny glover accept the partthat idea sound terrible compared to my script but then again i might be baised

    by big jim

that does sound terrible. Reminds me of the so-called Superman movie idea where he would wear all black and not have a cape. Is there any relationship between the symbiote and Spider-Man? Because if there isn't, it isn't Venom (not to mention the whole Sam Blake instead of Eddie Brock "alter-ego"). Also reminds me of the Catwoman movie. Why bother with source material when you can take the character name and make up everything else yourself? Hey Hollywood, I have an idea for a Wonder Woman movie. A model/actress, Paulette Paisley, finds a magic tiara that gives her super strength. She wears a designer couture gown, with a cape and cowl. She fights corruption on the set of her CW show about superheros (she plays the obligatory damsel in distress/girlfriend) and has a crush on her co-star who only has eyes for her alter-ego. Hey, as long as it has the familiar title of "Wonder Woman" people will go see it, right?

UH OH BAD NEWS GUYS- CHECK THIS MERRICK

    by gravitysrainbow

    from splashpage:
Following up on yesterday’s news that “Spider-Man 4” scribe Gary Ross will write and direct the “Venom” spin-off; new details about the plot and story direction have emerged.

Variety is reporting that the new film will transform Venom into “an anti-hero who becomes a defender of the innocent.”

The move seems reminiscent of the '90s era “Venom” comics that cast the character as a “Lethal Protector.” However, it should be noted that while the reinvention of the character was initially successful, his popularity started to fade shortly thereafter.

Since the new movie is starting “from the drawing board," it’s not certain whether Topher Grace will reprise his role as Venom’s alter-ego, Eddie Brock. [SPOILER ALERT!] With Brock’s demise at the end of “Spider-Man 3,” it will be interesting to see if his resurrection is explained in the film or if the events of the previous movie will simply be ignored.

The “Venom” movie has been in development for several years, thanks to Marvel’s deal with Sony that allows the studio to use “Spider-Man” characters “in perpetuity.”

At this point, there is no date set for the release of the “Venom” film. However, given the speed of the most recent announcements, further news may be coming soon.

.. what kind of bonehead one would have to be to sign an "in perpetuity" contract knowing the state that Hollywood is in these days. One of three things can happen.. you'll never get your property back OR if you ever do get it back it will be jacked up beyond all recognition at that point. Otherwise the studio wouldn't let the rights revert back to you. Third option would be Disney buying out of the contract out for insane amounts of money. I hope that person was shown the door.

IMO, yes. It's a black symbiote that Spider-man originally got during "Secret wars" All it really does is make the wearer uninhibited and usually, destructively evil. It's only as interesting as who it takes over. The closest approximation would be that Jackie Chan movie "The tuxedo." Then again, venom has to be better than a daredevil movie.

Sea Biscuit/Pleasantville guy = We're stuck with Toby's fat bald

    by thecomedian

The only way most would give a shit about Spider-man 4 would be for them to start fresh with a new cast. Raimi could even stay on since he can change up his style with little to no effort. A 4th Toby movie where he's all fat and bald intercut with the same CGI spiderman doing shit a stunt man could do is gonna be lame. Especially with "Turn Off The Dark" coming out next year. If that play is a gangbusters hit like Tommy was in the 90s then no one's gonna give a shit about a cash in Toby sequel. Just my two cents. And it's not all hate for Toby Maguire. He's a talented actor. Just think they could use some new blood...or just sit down with Paramount and Disney have the old "we're all grown ups here." pow wow and let him be in the same movie as the rest of the Marvel heroes. That's the only way I'd give a shit about another Toby Maguire Spider-man movie.

    by jettl93

Disney now owns the Marvel, its inevitable that eventually Sony will lose the spiderman movie rights so they may as well pump out as many movies with the characters while they can. Fox is doing the same thing. Daredevil and Fantstic 4 where dead projects (trust me i know, i tried to get FOx to Ok my FF3script) but as soon as disney aquired Marvel FOx all of a suden anno8unded reboots of both franchises where in the works, and then they have hinted that X4 is a possibility (2 months ago the X-men franchise was over, spin offs and new mutants was to be all we saw). It's a business and these are bankable characters, so you can't really blame them...and hey for people like me that write this stuff its a great time to be working. I'd still love to jump on board the FF reboot, and i did some spec designs for a new daredevil costime, hope they use it

    Idea for S4 &5

    by tai_pan

    Here's my idea:

S4 starts with MJ angry that Peter is always out doing his thing and not having time for her. Peter is running against Michael Morbius for a research position with Curt Connors and Miles Warren, who are working on a way to regrow limbs for amputees.

Everyone disagrees with each other. Miles favors cloning the limb right onto the body. Connors suggests recombining human and lizard DNA. Morbius says that neither idea would work because the human body isn't strong enough. Peter secretly studies his own blood as a catalyst to regrowing limbs, and accidently discovers a way to rid himself of his powers. Peter would never consider it, and leaves the project cold... but his work is discovered by Morbius, Connors, and Warren. Each man greedily goes about implementing Peter's blood in a new way. Warren clones Peter outright as well as making himself stronger (and insane, of course... that's how these things usually work).

Peter and his clone are unaware of each other and both try to live the Peter/Spidey life for a few days, pissing off everyone (Mostly Morbius, who hates Peter) with a bunch of "what are you doing' "don't you remember what we just talked about" "why are you acting so differently" cliches until they run into each other and shit gets real. They become competitive as to who the real Parker is, and naturally fight to keep the other away from MJ, who is horrified by all this. In the end, the Jackal (Warren) dies, as does one of the two Spideys. The other one is horrified that he may be the clone and the real Parker dead, until he remembers something from AFTER Peter's DNA was sampled but BEFORE the clone was created, thus proving himself the real Parker. AFter talking with MJ, Peter decides that if he continues being Spider-man, he could loose his identity like he almost did with the clone, so he resolves to rid himself of his Spider-powers. The movie ends six-months later, with Morbius, Connors, and Parker all working on their own little science project. Morbius- blinded by his competition with Parker-accidently turns himself into a vampire. Connors does likewise, becoming the Lizard. And Parker... his attempt backfires and causes him to grow extra arms, becoming the eight-limbed Spider-man. End credits. Spider-Man 5 picks right off. Peter is horrified. Why didn't the process rid him of his powers and why did he grow extra limbs? To get the answers and cure himself, he has to track down Doc Connors. But Connors is now transforming into the Lizard- arguably Spidey's most savage foe. To make it worse, Morbius is also on the Doc's trail, and really pissed off at Parker, who he blames for his condition. Meanwhile, the media turns against Spidey, who they now regard as a monster/freak, and start blaming him for Morbius' murders. All the while, someone in the shadows is watching these three men who have turned themselves into monsters. It's Ben Reilly- the clone thought dead from the previous film. Turns out he survived, and came to grips with the horrible realization that he was the clone. He has come back after six months in exile to help his brother Peter cure himself. The climax of the story is the death of Morbius at the hands of the Lizard, and the horrible realization that not only is Connors uncurable, but that Peter is actually the clone.

That's why the formula made him grow arms instead of ridding him of his powers. His DNA is unstable, and slowly "Peter" will become a disgusting creature. THe man who has lived the past 6 months as Ben Reilly takes his rightful place and tries to make piece with the 6-armed Spider-clone, but the clone is inconsolable, noting that at some point he will lose all humanity and Spidey will probably have to defeat him in combat. Peter picks up the pieces of his life alongside MJ, while Connors and the clone run off in search of their respective cures.

"S4 starts with MJ angry that Peter is always out doing his thing and not having time for her." You accurately postulate the ongoing problems between Raimi's Peter and MJ, and that is precisely why these movies can be tedious. Spider-Man has a lot of angst, that's the comic version and I get that-- but every so often they let the guy loose and he kicks ass and takes names. If we get another movie where MJ's menstrual cycle dictates the action, I'm going to fucking cry more than the the combined weeping that took place in SPIDER-MAN 3.

    by big jim

The film's climax will have Spider-Man rescuing Mary Jane, who was kidnapped by the villain in order to lure Spidey into a fight, again. Why can't Spider-Man in the movies go after a villain because it is the right thing to do, not because his dumbass girlfriend got kidnapped, again? Why even bother with the line "with great power comes great responsibility"? Unless by "responsibility" the writers meant, as the villain's nemesis, being responsible for your girlfriend getting nabbed by the bad guy and feeling like it's on you to get her back safely".I'd love to see a cinema Spider-Man that gets his ass handed to him but goes back for seconds because he is the only one with a chance of stopping the bad guy. Not doing it because some family member is in trouble, and not because the villain is suddenly the one who was really responsible for his uncle's death (I will never get over how enormously stupid that was).

    by the bicycle sharer

Channing Tatum is in G.I. Joe. You know that, right? If you're not sure about this, I'll remind you -- he's the one that you probably mistook for a blank-faced vaguely human-shaped boulder in almost every scene. I know, I know. You probably thought that the boulder was some artsy "choice" that the director made, some avant-garde statement, that war is a mountain that fills our lives with boring blandness and a stunning inability to act, emote, or even read lines. But, no. No European fancy-schmancy here. Just, possibly, the all-time worst actor in the fucking history of the world. The kinda guy that the first cave man who got lied to would find hard to believe. Even Channing Tatum's family wants someone else to take over his role in their lives as they find that "the role of 'person' doesn't really suit Channing's strengths; he'd have been a much better paperweight." (That was his mom I quoted, by the way)See, you don't criticize anyone for anything when they're in a movie that Channing Tatum appears in. It's just not done. It's like trying to grab a stray hair on your head at the edge of a black hole.

  • Topher was the PERFECT Brock. Sure he wasn't 280lbs of muscle, but I don't recall Wolf Blitzer, Larry King, or any other journalist fit that mold either. Eddie Brock in the comics was a whiny, pathetic, clingy man who lost his job, his wife, and his sanity when he made an ass of himself by publishing a fake story. Spider-Man catches the real villain, and Brock blames Spider-Man for his problems. Movie Brock is a whiny, pathetic kid who loses everything after doctoring up a photo.
After praying to god, both versions of Eddie bond with the Symbiote, and are promised great power and revenge on the one Brock sees as ruining his life: Spider-Man (even though Brock is 100% at fault, but like most people these days, cannot take responsibility for his actions). Basically, of all the movie SM villains, Venom was the most faithful to the comics. How to bring him back? Easy. Since the SM universe seems to blend aspects of all the various versions of Spider-Man, we don't need some stupid alternate reality. All we need is a tiny sliver of the symbiote to survive. In Ultimate Spider-Man, the symbiote is able to regenerate not only itself, but its host's DNA as well. This would allow Eddie Brock to come back. Weakened and confused, Brock heads out to San Francisco, his birthplace. While out there, a government agency, realizing the potential of the alien (having seized the shred Conners has at ESU) persues Venom in an attempt to collect him for use as a super soldier program. Venom objects and fights back. The General in charge, using prisoners as test subjects, bonds a freak (Cletus Kassidy) with the shred Conners had, and creates Carnage. Carnage gets loose, and it's up to Venom to kill the offspring before San Fran is destroyed, and Venom escapes the General at the end and is seen sitting on a bus tow New York, for a 'reunion' with dear ol' Petey.

Channing Tatum is the worst actor I've ever seen

    by d.vader

Regardless of how bad other actors may be, or how over-the-top they get, they at least know how to emote. Channing Tatum seems to lack the muscles required to raise an eyebrow. His idea of getting angry of course is just getting louder.

The jerk just prattles on about sparing "the innocent" and has this really inflated sense of self-importance. Now he's Anti-Venom (lame) and nothing's changed. Can't imagine what a movie is going to be like. At any rate I think Scorpion has made a much more interesting fit for the symbiote.

Why does Venom have to be the main character?

    by cgih8r

A great formula would be to make a movie about an unknown or made-up Marvel character like a regular dude without powers and just tell a cool gritty story with some edge about some guy living in the Marvel universe. That way Venom and other awesome characters can show up in the background and be absolutes like the Joker in the Dark Knight that don't require an explanation or a story arc (That's how they appear in comics anyway). I think the mystery of these characters makes them the most interesting. One of the problems with origin movies is that they spoil the mystery by revealing too much and smear shit all over the 'sacred' origin that defines who the character is to fans.

    by orbots commander

I loved Seabiscuit; it reminded me of an old school B&W sports drama from the 1940's. Back then, it could have easily starred, say, James Cagney in the title role. Pleasantville was also a delight of a movie, though some of the points---black and white= close minded conservative and closeted gay vs. enlightened artists in Technicolor---were pretty simplistic.

I'm confident Ross can make a good super hero movie, but given his filmography you can guess what the tone of Venom would be. I'd say he's more suited to a sense of wonder, 'gee-whiz', Flash or even Superman film.
