STAR TREK Writers Kurtzman & Orci Book New HAWAII FIVE-0 Pilot For CBS!! Be There!! Aloha!!

Published at:  Oct 08, 2009 9:34:34 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the screenwriters behind J.J. Abrams’ big-screen “Star Trek” movie, got a pilot commitment from CBS Thursday for a new “Hawaii Five-0” pilot!

Way back in August 2008, CBS announced it was developing a “Five-0” with “Criminal Minds” showrunner Ed Bernero. I guess that one didn’t work out.

The original 1968-1980 crime drama followed a fictional state police agency charged with protecting the citizens of the nation’s 50th state.

“CSI: NY” writer-prouducer Peter Lenkov will serve as “Five-0’s” showrunner should it go to series.

Last year’s Bernero version was to center on Steve McGarrett’s son, who would have exactly the same job his dad did. Had I known of the Orci/Kurtzman this afternoon, when I was attending an Orci/Kurtzman press conference in Santa Monica, I would have asked them if the plan now is truly to reboot.

Perhaps if he notices this article, boborci will offer in talkback more details on the project.

CBS, which is also developing a remake of "The Streets of San Francisco," loves cop shows!

Why not S.W.A.T.? Yes, I know it was done as a film, but I am suprised that it has been choosen to be redone as a TV series, yet.

    Five-O: maybe my favorite series

    by kabong

But I'd rather do without a remake unless it's going to be good . . . and there's no reason to think Orci/Kurtzman will make it good.

The only remade series I ever liked was "Mission Impossible" and it had Peter Graves back in it.

Lord Lord has taken his black suit to a different Paradise.

Why not remake all TV shows...lets do Chips, or Hillstreet Blues, or in a few years, we can remake the X-Files or Lost. Yay, Hollywood!!!!

    by darth fabulous

I saw this idea in a talkback awhile back and I can't get the awesomeness out of my head. It would essentially be like having Jack Bristow back on TV again. These guys should be doing this instead if they have to remake something. These guys essentially know the character having written Alias for several years.

    by tomonicker

Come on... you know it. Hell, that one episode even smirkingly referenced it. The Other Dimension people are "this" versions alien conspiracy. At least so far it's been sorta entertaining... I've lost some hope lately though.

  • I've hated pretty much everything they've done... except Fringe. Really enjoyed it, if they can come up with original material like that, why are they bothering to destroy classic material?

    Fringe needs more Leonard Nimoy.

    by thedarklinglord

Because, really, that's the only reason I even returned for a second season of the otherwise asstastic X-Files ripoff that's minus the hot female lead (Anna Torv just comes across bitchy and as unappealing emotionally as she is physically). The most appealing character in the whole show is Astrid, and she gets almost as much screen time as Bishop's fucking cow.

The only episode I remember was when some "mad scientist" guy tries to drive McGarrett insane by putting him in a sensory deprivation tank and leaving him there for hours/days. They pull him out and he was like..(paraphrase)"..yeah I like occupied my mind by thinking about stuff to avoid going insane...duh." That is pretty much what he said. Book 'em Orci. You can have that one for free.

    All gay, all the time
Also no one arrested is guilty, they are all victims of society or police violence.
In one episode the police will merely stand-by as Critical Mass (cyclist) protesters riot, smashing windows and threatening a family in a mini-van.

    by adelai niska

I'm too young to have ever seen the original, but isn't the basic concept Hawaii + Cops? Did they reeeally need to re-use the name of an old show? Or is it just for the theme song? At least Galactica had some kind of mythology I'd at least heard of before they remade it. This show, all I have ever heard is "book em Dan-O." Will Dan-O return for the new series so they can re-use the catch phrase? Is Dan-O related to five-O?

Maybe I just assumed it would be made into a movie since that's generally what happens with old, successful TV series. Just waiting on a Little House on the Prairie movie announcement. Hopefully Laura Ingles will spend the entire film sucking cock in the background of every scene.

CBS has had some enjoyable non-Survivor tv since Dukes.

    by shermdawg

Raven, Golden Years, American Gothic, and Hard Time on Planet Earth come to mind. Though I was just a lad when several of those were running so they may not be...and probably aren't...as great as I remember.

    Hawaii 50

    by margroks

I remember the original H50 and while it was a big hit and could be very entertaining, it was by no means perfect nor was Jack Lord the be-all and end-all when it comes to actors or his role in it. Hawaiian locals often made fun of the plots and misrepresentation of the Hawaiian islands in the original so an update could be just what it needs.

All remakes DON'T fail as evidenced by the Star Trek movie of last summer which actually recast the original principal cast members with great success. Battlestar Galactica is another example of a remake which succeeded beyond all expectations and there is no reason to think the new H50 won't be another such success.

I can't understand why some people have to be so gloom and doom when they have yet to see a single frame of film from the new series. It's only fair to give a show a chance before declaring it a failure and actually watch it before forming such negative opinions.
