‘It Is Really Special!!’ Thursday Brings The Big Hour Wedding Episode of NBC's THE OFFICE!!

Published at:  Oct 08, 2009 10:58:10 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

The big wedding “Office,” written by Greg Daniels and Mindy Kaling, airs tonight. Will it make up for last week’s inert installment about who gets the salary increases? Six scenes to help you judge:

Tonight:

6.4/5 “Niagara”
The Office travels to Niagara Falls to celebrate Jim and Pam’s wedding under strict orders not to mention Pam’s pregnancy. Michael, Dwight, and Andy all want to hook up with guests at the wedding and Michael and Dwight meet twins.

Next week:

6.6 “Mafia”
Michael meets with an insurance salesman who visits the office and is later convinced by Dwight and Andy that he is part of the Mafia. Erin accidentally ruins Pam’s painting.

Oct. 22:

6.7 “The Lover”
Michael shocks Jim and Pam when he reveals the identity of the new woman he has been dating. Dwight apologizes to Jim for years of torment with a strange peace offering.

Oct. 29:

6.8 “Koi Pond”
It’s Halloween and the office plans a “Haunted House” for the children in the community. And at an important business meeting, Michael falls into a koi pond. Meanwhile, Pam and Andy go cold calling to drum up more sales.

Deleted scenes from last week’s installment, “The Promotion”:

deleted scenes from last week? great.

    by badmrwonka

scenes from an episode that hasn't aired yet? not so much. these posts never used to have those, and even though they're making them available, I don't know, it just feels silly. it's like a preview for a show that's 23 minutes long, it doesn't make sense. no one is going to watch those, and decide NOT to watch the show. and people who are already going to watch the show, what's the point in spoiling a few funny moments for yourself? I just don't get it.

    Jim & Pam

    by boe

Jim & Pam are the soul of the show. Now that their arc is coming to a conclusion, the show should go one more season (Michael finally meets someone over the course of this season, gets married next) and then go away before they beat it to death. It has had a good run, but unless they are willing to really shake things up somehow, it is going to continue to get stale.

Deleted scenes always so much better...

    by adrianveidt

And last week's should be a prime example. It's not ALWAYS the case, but watching last week's episode was slightly painful. Kevin talking to Jim, and the talking heads about who they like better, were by far better than most of the scenes from last week's uncomfortable-without-being-funny episode. When the show first came out, I would say the BBC one was better. But after seasons 2 and 3, I decided that the American one had it's one unique charm and was extremely funny in its own right. However, perhaps Gervais was right to cut his short, and solely because of the character of Jim/Tim. Remember how much Jim hates his job? And how we used to pity him because he clearly was made for much bigger and better things? And now, since we need to have more seasons, and clearly need Jim around, he is perennially stuck in Scranton, and to make matters worse, we're starting like him less? This is unfortunate character development.

There is a fan campaign going on after last week's horrendous ratings, lots of articles about those ratings & some speculation that it might not return after the baseball hiatus on the 16th. They are still fliming the 7th ep. & they are going to see if Eliza's P/R blitz is going to cause an upswing. But yeah, this Friday's ep is probably very important to what they are going to do.

The hour longs that aren't season enders are usually weak. Last week was OK, the two other episodes though were damn good. I wonder if the wedding is actually going to happen. Also whats the deal with all the directors of this show getting movie gigs? Is it because Ramis works on the show all the time? Granted Lisence to Wed was one of the movies from a Office Director, but Ramis doesn't make good movies these days.

    by 2for2true

While SNL Thursday and P&R have been better than expected, Office and Community have been just average. I actually got more laughs out of one episode of Earl than I have out of the entire season of Community thus far.

To date, the high point of Must See TV Thursday has definitely been Sunny in Philly - 3 great episodes that beat the pants off anything NBC has done this season.

Respectfully, dude - fuck off. I really tire of snobs tossing that tired comment into every discussion of the Office. Very different tone between the two shows. No doubt, Gervais was great as were the other cast members, right down to Merchant's "don't have a go at the eyes" cameo. All the same, it was maudlin
and even a bit nasty on occasion (much like the Brits themselves) and a little of that goes a long way. I personally think Peep Show is a superior comedy, in part because they know when to lighten the mood a little.

but this shows just how fucked-up NBC is. Showrunner John Wells let 'em have it with both barrels: "I'm disappointed that NBC no longer has the time periods available to support the kind of critically-acclaimed series that was for so many years, a hallmark of their success."

One more casualty of the network mortgaging their future on a comedian who's quickly becoming an act of the past. I'm talkin' to you, Mr. Chin-Head Leno. NBC raised the white flag on their season this afternoon, IMO.

Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily's comments...

    by pennsydeux

"NBC has axed Southland...I hear Trauma is next because of its ridiculouly excessive $3m pricetag an episode. (When I screened the show, I was rooting for the helicopter to kill off every character). My NBC insiders are letting Angela Bromstad off the hook, saying "she picked the best of shit" from Ben Silverman's failed development. "This is the last gift that keeps on giving from Ben Silverman." The insiders are even going so far as to give up on the rest of the primetime schedule for their network.

"There's nothing watchable the rest of the year." Even midseason and spring of 2010? "Nothing watchable the rest of the season," I'm told. "Maybe Jerry Seinfeld's The Marriage Ref will work, but he's not even in it. This is not a fun place to be right now. *And we committed to Jay Leno on the air for 2 years because he was worried we'd have an itchy trigger finger*. It's an embarrassment for all of us. Maybe he'll get fed up - he's not right now - and then we can renegotiate."

This is beyond sad. It's the destruction of a brand."

It is completely lifeless, dull, unfunny and coma-inducing. The people who find it funny and make a point of broadcasting so among social circles in an effort to appear sophisticated are, almost without exception, the most boring, socially awkward people in any given room. by stlost

that was the point. They knew their friends would do something like that, because the office group would think it would be awesome and hip to do the song like on youtube. That's why jim and pam went to niagara falls and did the boat tour to have the wedding vows the way they wanted to.

I thought it was a great episode. I really dig the Jim/Pam relationship and think it's great they didn't mess it up and have them actually have a good relationship throughout the seasons.

Do we really need to see the baby be born? Or Michael do his same old schtick for 4 more years? Or Dwight being weird? It would have been awesome to just kill it there.

Agreed on all accounts. It's makes the British version so legendary. It's consistency. People wanted more and yet, it came to the absolute perfect conclusion.

The Office is, at its core, about the Jim-Pam, Tim-Dawn relationship. Now would be the appropriate time to end it.

That people have said it should be a series finale, that pops up whenever it's a major episode about Jim and Pam, but whether we like it or not the US version of the show is about Michael not them. It will probably end with a Michael/Holly wedding.
As to Carell having one less year on his contract than others, that just means he had a better agent. He hasn't resigned yet because he's waiting for them to give him a big check, that's how it works and why you always hear actors say they aren't sure if they are going to do another year or another sequel. If they pay him enough I'm sure Carell would do the show forever.

You are correct. And now I don't feel so alone. The Actress is Linda Purl, and she played Fonzie's girlfriend near the end of Happy Days. by coughlins laws

The Jim character has been neutered in my eyes ever since they let him "get the girl". It's the same thing with Chandler on Friends. He was the funniest character as the wise-cracking geek who could never get a chick. But as soon as he scores the Hot Chick, it just takes away his bite. He goes from lovable wisenheimer you root for to just a jerk... I don't think Jim is funny at all anymore. I hate the choices they've made from firing Jan, then writing her off the show, then inexplicably making The Temp Regional Manager, then firing him for embezzlement, then letting him come back to work at the office, then getting Jim and Pam together 3 seasons too soon, then getting them pregnant, then not allowing them any troubles or fights or anything. They're living happily ever after right in front of us and it's boring. Oh, plus I think it's stupid Pam's now a Salesperson...

    by coughlins laws

halfway through the show's shelflife was a particularly bright idea. Unfortunately, two people getting together and being happy after the entire set-up of the show was how they flirt with each other and the timing being off makes the show kind of boring, now. This show has nothing to do with the show that it was based on, now...

You say that like it's a bad thing. The US Office is its own entity and it kills me that here we are in Season Six, and there are STILL knobs like you whining that it's nothing like the dreadfully boring UK Office. It's still funny and moving and very entertaining. I like that it's a show that cares about its characters rather than thrashing around for cheap humor like 30 Rock, Scrubs, and Community.

For those of you advocating for the end of The Office, what would you replace it with? I hope it carries on for years because without it, there's not much funny on TV.

    Babies and Weddings

    by steve young

Most of you assume, even if a show is "about" a particular person or couple, that the series must end
with a wedding or a birth.

It is a cliche that - despite its own weddings and births - this show has consistently avoided. It's like some of you can't have "closure" unless you're handed the standard climax on a plate.

Not to say this show has handled everything perfectly. It has always been a bit of a cartoon, but this season has been really steady. Some of us loved this season's focus back in the office - yes, even the so-called "inert" episode from last week (love you Herc, but the glib asides accompanying most of your articles are usually pretty far off), which to me was funnier than watching some sort of pratfall or another obvious Kelly talking-head punchline.

This is much better than Season 5 so far, which stumbled majorly in the middle with its "Angela / Dwight / Andy" triangle and "pregnant Jan" storylines...

The wedding episode was a little saccharine, but this show has really only had two of them so far, and it's not like the show didn't earn it after so many years of undercutting emotion with idiocy.

Write Jim and Pam off the show

    by dapper swindler

I'm serious. It would be a bold and risky decision, but it's the only way to save the show before it becomes completely stale. Introduce new characters while phasing out Jim and Pam. After the baby, have them move completely. It's not that I don't like Jim and Pam, it's that the show has this problem with making its characters become more and more outrageous with each episode. Soon they will become so outrageous the show will suck. The subtlety in the humor is gradually disappearing. Compare season 6 with season 2, the characters act like lunatic versions of their former selves. The only way to save it is to bring in new characters and have them go through the process fresh from the begining.
