UPDATE!! New York Times: LETTERMAN Garnered More Viewers Monday Than LENO Or Any NBC Show In Primetime!!

Published at:  Oct 06, 2009 7:29:14 PM CDT

UPDATE!! A surprising stat outside the 18-49 demo. Bill Carter writes in the New York Times:

Mr. Letterman, who again addressed his admissions that he had sexual relationships with some of his staff members, attracted 5.7 million viewers Monday night, his biggest audience since President Obama was a guest two weeks ago. That was easily more viewers than Mr. Leno, who scored his lowest audience total yet for his new 10 p.m. show, with just 4.5 million viewers.

NBC’s two other prime-time entries, “Heroes” and “Trauma,” both finished with fewer viewers than Mr. Letterman, 5.5 million and 5.4 million.

Original post:

I am – Hercules!!

No more Monday premieres! The 18-49 rankings (prior weeks in parentheses):

MONDAY PRIMETIME:
5.1 (5.7) (6.5) House
4.5 (5.1) (4.6) Big Bang Theory
4.3 (4.7) (4.4) Two and a Half Men
4.0 (3.6) (4.1) Dancing With The Stars
3.9 (4.1) (4.3) CSI: Miami
3.4 (3.6) (3.5) How I Met Your Mother
3.0 (2.9) (----) Lie To Me
3.0 (2.3) (2.3) Castle
2.8 (3.1) (3.2) Accidentally On Purpose
2.3 (2.3) (2.7) Heroes
1.8 (2.3) (----) Trauma
1.4 (1.8) (1.8) The Jay Leno Show
1.1 (1.2) (1.1) Gossip Girl
1.0 (1.2) (1.2) One Tree Hill

MONDAY LATE NIGHT:
1.3 The Late Show With David Letterman
0.8 The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien
0.7 The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson
0.5 Jimmy Kimmel Live
0.5 Late Night With Jimmy Fallon

* “Letterman” apparently benefited from an alleged real-life blackmail attempt and visits from Steve Martin and Martin Short; it crushed “Conan.”

* Primetime’s “Leno” fell to its lowest rating on any night to date, now only a tenth of a point ahead of “Letterman’s” late-night show in 18-49.

* ABC’s Nathan Fillion hourlong “Castle” posted a BIG (36%) gain at 10 p.m. as timeslot competitors “Leno” and “CSI Miami” gave up ground. (The Hollywood Reporter suggests however that the ABC overnight figures may have been inflated by pre-emptions at ABC's Milwaukee and Minneapolis affiliates that allowed them to broadcast ESPN's Monday night Vikings-Packers game.)

* In this football-enhanced TV environment ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars” ascended while “House,” CBS’ comedies, NBC’s dramas and The CW’s young-adult dramas all declined against it.

* “Lie To Me,” which plummeted 44% last week from its January premiere, was the only non-ABC show to post an increase over its prior Monday.

    Thot: Letterman hypocrisy

    by nem_wan

Letterman's Monday monologue played off his obvious hypocrisy with a little play-acting of himself trying to tell a joke about Mark Sanford but being too embarrassed to finish it, then moving on to a setup about Bill Clinton and stopping, etc. He's well aware of his situation. Letterman's fans appreciate that he lets the audience in on the joke even when it's on him. When Letterman isn't the funniest he's still more intelligent and interesting personally.

    by chromedome

good chemistry between the characters all around (Castle/Beckett, Castle/daughter, mother, other cops). The "Wager" stuff last week was fun.All of the murder mystery shows rely on a crime-solved-in-one-hour formula of some sort, so nothing earth shatteringly good on that level in any of them. What matters is the longer story arc and the character interaction/development. Castle has fun and like-able characters. They make fun of themselves, and other crime shows, writers... It is the only must-see show on Monday's for me.Heroes? I remember a season years ago that was good....

    Leno stole Conan's thunder

    by cylon_conspiracy

I'm old enough to remember watching Johnny Carson. When Leno took over from Carson, it was a big deal that the baton was being passed.

When Leno got his 'new' show, it completely undermined the significance of Conan inheriting the Tonight Show, and made both Conan AND the Tonight Show, seem not so important. Sad that Leno just can't stay off late night tv.

I'm not sure if these ratings take Hulu into account though. I never watch tv on tv, only through Hulu. I watch Conan clips that way.

When did AICN start tracking ratings like this?

    by slder78

I know there used to be sporatic news of ratings, but this is the first time I can recall that there's a regular update on the overnights. I used to respect AICN for not reporting Box office grosses and ratings because I thought actual news was more important, but now I'm a little disappointed. I guess I'm really turned off by Herc's snide remarks for the shows he's ;isting in the TV ratings. It's one thing to give your opinion when you're reviewing a show, it's different when you're reporting numbers. I'm specifically referring to the ratings post for last Thursday night. Yeah, we get that you hate Flashforward and you think Goyer is an asshat, why do you feel the need to hammer your point? Herc's attacks (and make no mistake they are attacks) at specific shows and writers just seem out of place in a post such as this. Though I suppose his unyielding defense of all things Saturday Night Live should have exposed his mental instability.

    by thebaxter

everyone knows that leno only appeals to the AARP crowd. only showing the 18-49 numbers obviously skews his numbers downward. if he reported the 50-69 numbers, or the 70-dead numbers, leno's ratings would look a lot better.

I mean it was entertaining... I actually recall the father/daughter angle as being the best part, but it's a mostly forgetable show. Okay to watch, but gone from the cerebellum the next de-frag. I don't think Leno's going to last over the long haul; he's doing the same damn show he used to do at the appropriate time slot for it, and now Conan is really sucking, because he's NOT doing his own show but some pale mish-mash.

    Conan has sucked recently

    by series7

Its Leno's fault. Becuase he was coming back, old people didn't invest in Conan. So during the summer break when Conans ratings where down, he came back and was a lot more like Leno. He's jokes have been dog shit recently. Also Leno just seems bored with his new show, like thinking in his head.."why did I do this?" While Leno wanted respect the sanctimony of an American Top Gear show, he was willing to shit all over The Tonight Show? Seriously Leno hosting American Top Gear once a week at the early primetime spot would have worked and would have been fun. He would be able to get cool cars, he knows his shit and he would get tons of celeberties out for it. Now its being done by Adam Carolla. I don't even know if it got picked up from its piolet but I saw something at Best Buy showing clips of it. Adam Carolla is fine....but I'd much rather see him and Leno trade places (or stick Adam Carolla as a perment fixture on Kimmel).

I'm not here to bash Leno, even though I prefer Conan. But Leno's show seems so edited. It's jarring sometimes. And the bits go on WAY too long. Leno seems like a nice guy, but the interviews come across as so awkward. Why can't people just root for Dave, conan and jay. It's like people have a vested interest in these personalities. Its silly.

Series7: OMG I am SO in agreement on a Leno Top Gear show.

    by royston lodge

A weekly Leno-hosted Top Gear show would have been great.
    Unfortunately:
    1) That's the sort of concept that might get picked up by PBS, but could even Jay Leno convince the executives at NBC?
    2) The whole point of The Jay Leno Show is that it's cheap to produce. I have a sneaking suspicion that Top Gear with Jay Leno would be too expensive, considering how many cars they DESTROY on the British show.
On the other hand, a lot of the cars they destroy are purchased for $1000 or less, so maybe it could work.
The car companies would certainly THROW sponsorship money at it. NBC could brand every single minute of the show for a different company.
"Coming up, the Chevrolet First Guest of the Night, followed by the Chrysler First Guest of the Night. But first, the Toyota Stupid Skit of the Night, right after the Ford Monologue."

If you're an unmarried man having sex with women, that's not a scandal. It's not an affair. It's just a guy having sex. And I'm guessing the "staffers" are employed by CBS--not David Letterman personally. I don't put much stock in any arguments that Dave was their "boss" and may have used undue influence to pressure them into sex. I highly doubt that.

Whether the employees were CBS or Dave's production company, the idea that he isn't there boss would be laughed out of court. He can have them fired or hired on the slightest whim. I doubt though that he did use pressure on them, the more likely problem was whether they got promotions after sleeping with him. Look for the lawsuit from the person who didn't sleep with him and lost out on a promotion to someone who did.

It's too early to tell if Letterman is getting a permanent boost

    by coughlins laws

from this scandal. People like watching a train-wreck. Remember, Jon & Kate Plus 8 got huge ratings for their first show since they separated but now they don't even have a show. Letterman may get extra people watching for a couple of nights seeing if any new revatlations happen, but once they start watching the show and see he's not funny anymore, just a partisan hack like Kieth Olbermann instead of an actual comedian, his ratings will level off again. Not saying Conan will do any better, though. It's just that Letterman is NOT funny anymore and unless you lean Left-Of-Center in your politics, all his jokes are aimed at you...
