Behold The New DOCTOR WHO Logo!!

Published at:  Oct 06, 2009 12:49:13 PM CDT

Merrick here...

BBC America has unveiled the new DOCTOR WHO logo that'll accompany the arrival of Matt Smith as the new Doctor this Spring.

Per a press release on the matter:

A first look at the new Doctor Who logo, which will accompany Matt Smith’s on-screen debut as The Doctor in spring 2010, has been unveiled and can be seen at www.bbcamerica.com/doctorwho. The logo is the eleventh to have been used on screen in the show’s history.

Accompanying the logo at BBCAmerica.com is an animated insignia of the show’s initials, which will be used as branding for the new series in conjunction with the logo.

About the new logo Steven Moffat, the new Lead Writer and Executive Producer said:

“A new logo. The eleventh logo for the eleventh Doctor - those grand old words, Doctor Who, suddenly looking newer than ever. And look at that, something really new - an insignia! DW in TARDIS form! Simple and beautiful, and most important of all, a completely irresistible doodle. I apologise to school notebooks everywhere, because in 2010 that's what they're going to be wearing.”

Maybe. But any kid owning a notebook wearing that logo will most likely have the shit beaten out of them for it, so don't expect this fashion trend to last too long.

Here's what he's talking about!

It looks very much like the logo circa the Troughton years. And also like the McGann years. Weirdly, it looks very much like the logo that the SciFi er, SyFy channel was using to promote the show a couple years ago. It really feels like Steven Moffatt is going for a VERY classic, old-style, timeless (no pun intended) Doctor Who as his vision for the new era. I just hope that it doesn't get too fannish and lose it's mass appeal. I'd still LOVE a "10 Doctors" episode though!!!

I suppose geeky kids will always be picked on and, at one point, Doctor Who would have been exclusively geeky. But now, in the right age range, you obviously underestimate the popularity of Doctor Who. It regularly gets over a 50% share among children.

Although I ultimately realized how silly the show was and, basically, disowned it. It was fun for a few years though. I've only seen minutes of this new stuff and there was some fart joke, so I quit watching almost immediately. Everytime there's a Who story on AICN I feel weirdly compelled to check it out, even though my appreciation for the show ran its course back in the 80s.

Oh, Merrick... you really have no idea how popular Doctor Who is here in Britain, do you? I don't even know if there's a similar comparison over in the USA. Imagine a show that's loved by pretty much every age range, from 3-4 year olds to 70-80 year olds. A show that transcends simply popularity to become a much-loved national institution. Trust me, no-one is beaten up in school for loving Doctor Who, and Moffat's right - expect that insignia to crop up on every schoolbook in the land come 2010! Christ, AICN's finger is getting further and further away from the pulse with every passing day, and it's getting quite sad now...

Fucking JJ Abrams logo is GONE! Long live the new Logo!!!

    by spud mcspud

I hated the lens flare-heavy, Arial fonted blandness of the last logo - looks like something wanky a London based PR firm would dream up, which of course is why RTD loved it so much (wanky London pretentiousness being his style, of course). This does feel very Paul McGann-era ish, which is no bad thing - it looks like the Grand Moff is going old school with this Doctor, and the Tom Baker fan in me likes that. A LOT.

And Karen Gillan is the PERFECT choice for a Companion. Massively talented, virtually unknown. PERFECT.

    Buuuuuuut...

It's a bit TOO retro for the current fans - and if we lose those (yes, even the ones who enjoy Slitheen fart jokes and the gratuitous RTD PC agenda) there's every chance the Beeb will axe new Who if it goes downhill fast. So, as much as I like this new logo - I REALLY hope it doesn't lose the fanbase.

I do like the TARDIS shaped doodle, though. Very kewl!

    This gets the Spud vote...

    by kevred

The previous one was so boring and evocative of nothing at all. This one is classy, echoes some of the older versions, and I love the TARDIS-ness of it. It's not quite as cohesive as the classic Pertwee and Tom Baker designs, but I like it a lot, and was prepared not to after recent poor graphic design from the series.

Tennant was fine, but Pertwee and Tom Baker were best

    by kevred

...in my opinion. The newer shows are smart and well-produced, but are too self-aware and suffer from a crippling need to undermine the Doctor for the sake of empowering the somewhat bland supporting casts. Say what you will about the low-budget effects and screaming girls in the old series, but they were packed to the gills with imagination and made the Doctor funnier, more capable, and more alien than anything we see these days. Plus, they weren't so timidly bound by fashion and trying to be cool as the newer shows are. Young Doctors with mod haircuts and present-day fashions = compromise.

    Why the logo matters.

    by royston lodge

Doctor Who street cred depends on the producers' ability to walk that line between nostalgia and modernity. When the show departs too far from its roots (as it arguably did the most during the Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy years) by fiddling too much with the aesthetic elements that make the show "Doctor Who", it becomes painfully obvious that the producers aren't actually fans of the show.
But of course the producers have to bring The Doctor into the 21st century.
When Russell Davies launched the reboot, he was very smart in the way he wrestled with the classic Doctor Who aesthetics and continuity. For example, his version of the theme song was MORE like the classic theme than the late 1980s versions were, even though it was also very moderized (You could say he "post-modernized" it, eh? RIGHT?!)
He also managed to bring in classic foes and characters without making them look too cheesy (within budgetary limits, of course).
While I don't universally enjoy Davies' vision of Doctor Who (many episodes do, indeed, suck) I have to give credit where credit's due when it comes to the show's art direction and the effort the producers made to find the correct "spirit" of the show.
So, with Davies gone and the show being subjected to yet another "reimagining", it shouldn't be surprising that fans should scrutinize every scrap of information regarding where the new mucka-mucks are taking it.
Sure, it's "only a logo". But it's a clue to the overall aesthetic of the new show.
And I, for one, do not see ANYTHING of the classic Doctor Who aesthetic in this new logo. Here's hoping it's not a bellwether for the overall aesthetic of the show.
FYI: Here are all the logos compiled together in one jpg, for comparison:http://tinyurl.com/ybegpdx
At least the new one isn't as bad as the Sylvester McCoy one.

Final point: Writing vs. Art Direction

    by royston lodge

I recognize that Moffat has been a shining light amongst Doctor Who writers, but that doesn't necessarily mean that his vision for the show's art direction will enjoy the same success.
Final Plea: Do something about the Tardis' interior. Sure, you don't have to go back to the THX-1138 all-white design, but I remember fondly the episodes from the Tom Baker/Peter Davison years where they explored the Tardis' vast back corridors, which even The Doctor had never explored fully! I'd love to see an episode with dialogue like, "Hey Doctor, what's back there?" "You know, I'm not really sure..."

Terrible. Looks like it was grabbed from a t-26 type catalog in 1998. The letterform TARDIS is a cute idea, but the typeface is just unforgivable. At least the previous, orange-oval one looked like money had been spent on it.

    by quantize

Tennant was just ok, but the production values in the current series (including half baked hollywood scoring) have failed to even vaguely capture the whimsical fun of the Pertwee and Baker era's.

    Reply to Talkback

  • At least, that's the current rumor. If the buzz is actually true, it'll be blue-ish (which would go with the new logo) and have more than one level. And given the new/old TARDIS exterior and Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor costume, the new interior will probably be a bit retro Hartnell/Troughtonesque in design as well.

BEST TO NOT-QUITE-SO-BEST (Because they're splendid chaps, all of them)

    1) David Tennant
    2) Tom Baker
    3) Patrick Troughton
    4) Peter Davison
    5) Jon Pertwee
    6) William Hartnell
    7) Christopher Eccleston
    8) Sylvester McCoy
    9) Paul McGann (Would be higher because of the Big Finish CD audio adventures but only had one televised story)
    10) Colin Baker (Also much better in the Big Finish audios)

    by hint_of_smegma

Every character will have to be gay, or at least bi-curious. From now on the Doctor will have to enter the Tardis through the back door, and the companions will all be 19 year old lads with sixpacks and fair hair. You just wait and see if I'm wrong. Look to The Bill for proof. Not that there's anything wrong with it. Well, except for the gayness obviously.

    by fexfx

Every doctor since the original got their own logo and their own version of the theme. It's a tradition. Its an immediately identifiable branding of a new era for the show. It has been repackaged because it is a new product. During its lifetime, Doctor Who has changed its entire cast, crew and writing staff many many many times. Each era has felt different from the one before it. Each has had its own relative values and drawbacks. I have seen every single episode of Doctor Who ever to air, and I eagerly await the discovery of what this next era will be like.

    Tardis interior

    by royston lodge

Hmm, I hope they don't completely abandon the steampunk control room. I liked the IDEA of the steampunk tardis. I just didn't like they way they implemented it. It was too obvious that the knobs and levers weren't attached to anything. The controls needed some satisfying clickety-clack sound effects. More like the dashboard of the time machine in Time After Time.Plus, the control room was too big. Why would the timelords design a control room like it was a ballroom? Sure, the interior's supposed to be bigger than the exterior, but making it that big just reinforced that it was really just a soundstage!

He'd be an excellent Jamie-type. But having an older Doctor would help. Though something tells me that very young Matt Smith will have a bit of precocious Harry Potter in him. I like his slightly more classic look, hopefully that's a sign of more love for the Who tradition and less PC nonsense to come.

When you say "who" it sounds like "hoo" in your brain so it's thinking "DH," which of course would be a very 'tarded way to go but when you see "DW" ur brain doesn't automatically think Doctor Who. Anyway, this is the first to use initials. I always preferred the 3rd iteration, the one in red & orange with the bold WHO over a diamond.

My other requests for this new season . . .

    by royston lodge

    1) Give us more cool historically-plausible stories set during neato periods of Earth's past.I really enjoyed the Agatha Christie episode, and the Queen Victoria episode, and stuff like that.
The original series dwelled so much on sci-fi and outer space (trying to capitalize on Star Trek and Star Wars and stuff like that, I guess) that they neglected to explore the possibilities for laying a little historical education on the kiddies.
Seems like a pretty big oversight, considering that the show revolves around a freakin' time machine!
    But I digress...
This new season should strike a nice balance between stories about the Doctor Who mythos (daleks, cybermen, Gallifrey, The Master), cool new future/galaxy far far away stories (I wanna see the Face of Bo one more time!), and historically-plausible (if not completely accurate) stories in earth's past.
    2) I think getting The Doctor to repair the Tardis' camouflage abilities would be a decent idea. At worst it could provide for a few cheap laughs. At best it could be used for some interesting plot points. The police box really is quite conspicuous when the Tardis materializes in 2009 London. Repairing the camouflage wouldn't mean saying good-bye to the police box completely, since it would still be an appropriate disguise whenever they touch down in post-war Britain. But coming up with interesting disguises for the Tardis on other planets or in future settings could be an interesting exercise for the writers and the art direction team.
    3) Could we have a male companion again? I liked that kid from Coronation Street. And/or a companion from a different time period, like the Second Doctor's highlander pal Jamie.
    4) Bring back Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and UNIT. Screw Torchwood.
    5) I just read that Moffat's favourite Doctor is Peter Davison. That gives me a lot of hope for the new season! I loved Peter Davison.
(I still say Rupert Grint would have a damn good Doctor. They seem to be following the apocryphal convention that the Doctor gets younger with each regeneration, and I think Grint would jump at the chance to play a character that's hundreds/thousands of years old but looks like he's in his teens/twenties. Of course he wouldn't play the character like a Ron Weasly wuss. His delivery would be mature and "Doctor-like" but his appearance and movement would be more Ron-like. I really think it would work! He would be way too much of an obvious cliche as a companion.
That being said, I would PREFER an older Doctor, but it doesn't look like they're going in that direction.)

Can't see it happening though, he's too big an actor. Plus the show itself is way to kiddified and weak. If they rebooted it as a dark and serious sci-fi...which the material really supports when you think about it - then he would be utterly perfect. Never going to happen though, unfortunately. And Dark City rules dude. Speaking of which, his Dark City colleague Richard O'Brien would make probably the greatest Doctor ever.

I like it's retro feel. I am really looking forward to seeing the show evolve under Moffat. I grew up on Who and I love it dearly, but while I would not have done some of the things RTD did, most of it sicne the relaunch has been great and it's just good to have it back. Plus, when you go back and watch the old stuff (which I do plenty) there was some great swathes of shit at times! Memory does wear rose tinted glasses!

And to my fellow Brits who can't see it: just go on the British BBC site and look it up you whiney gits!

    Colin Baker

    by steve t

I am just watching through the Colin Baker stuff, it's not great, but mostly for the production values (the beeb was chopping it's budget year on year by then). There are some good ideas in there sometimes that never get realised. And I like the idea of of a Schizo slightly arsehole Doctor, Hartnell's Doctor had an arsehole streak in him early on.

    nervous!

    by candy ass monkey suit

I continue to be extremely nervous re Who now davies and Tennant have left. I know Moffat is hugely talented and have loved his stories but virtually every choice he's made since he took over ive hated..from Matt smith, the ridiculous costume, the new logo, the newer looking tardis..the list goes on. Russell T Davies was no joss whedon but he did embue the series with 2 great doctors and some smart choices along the way. Ive seen nothing from Moffat so far anywhere near as good. Nervous nervous nervous.

    Royston Lodge...

    by fexfx

Ah yes, but you see the usage of the logo as part of the title sequence was changed to some degree even if the font and graphic were not. Each title sequence was unique, either because it contained the face of the current doctor, the music had been changed, or the logo had been utterly revamped. The least changed logo would have been the second doctor.

Here is a link to a nicely done history of the title sequence...nifty info...

I'm ready to get into Dr Who, don't think I've ever seen more than a few glances. Where would a perfect starting point be? Not at the beginning, not enough time. What's this Russell Davies reboot I saw mentioned above?

    by annoyyou

However, "The Waters of Mars" looks scary as hell - at least as scary as "Blink." Brrr. God, I'm going to miss Tennant. And in this ep. he's teamed with Servillia! No romance, just a bad-ass woman. YES. Not looking forward to Smith's tenure. He's a pisher.

    Logo is pretty decent

    by dejectedrobot

The old logo was pretty ugly, this one is simplistic and emulates the TARDIS. I just hope the show gets better. I love the concept of Doctor Who, but the execution has been pretty terrible. I do not blame the actors as I loved both Eccleston and Tennant as the Doctor but the writing (save about 6 or 7 episodes from the recent series) and production value has been atrocious. Hopefully the new season will be a step in the right direction.

you can get to design a tardis console. the winner will be chosen by matt smith and cryptically the console will be in keeping with the show. so I think this is a new modern dr who. with a twist.

My previous positive comments on RTD notwithstanding...

    by royston lodge

...I've been rewatching a few episodes over the past few days, and paying closer attention to who writes each episode.
I started to get the impression that RTD doesn't really LIKE Doctor Who. He seems to get pleasure from killing classic characters!
I mean, all the other Time Lords are dead, Gallifrey has been destroyed, K-9 was blown to pieces, and The Master refused to regenerate, making him dead-dead instead of just mostly-dead.
Steven Moffat seems to be way more of an actual Doctor Who fan, as evidenced by the "Time Crash" mini-episode where Tennant meets Davison and says, "you're MY Doctor."

To those who dismiss Doctor Who as a "kid's show".

    by royston lodge

For much of it's history, Doctor Who received much criticism from the usual suspects for being much too violent for children. There was a study done which showed that Doctor Who was the most violent program to ever be broadcast in the UK, according to the average number of violent-acts-per-episode.
From Wikipedia: "It has been said that watching Doctor Who from a position of safety "behind the sofa" (as the Doctor Who exhibition at the Museum of the Moving Image in London was titled) and peering cautiously out to see if the frightening part was over is one of the great shared experiences of British childhood. The phrase has become commonly used in association with the programme and occasionally elsewhere."
I remember being scared shitless by one episode where people were being killed horribly by some sort of tree creature. The visual wasn't so bad, but the screaming really got to me.
I will concede that the new series doesn't QUITE pull off the suspenseful/scary moments of the classic show.
Here's hoping Grand Moffat will be able to ramp up the scary bits!

    Rex_Nimrod: Replicating Doctor Who effects

    by royston lodge

I keep telling myself that, one of these weekends, I'm going to set up my old Super8 camera and figure out how to create the old-school Doctor Who/2001 Space Odyssey wormhole effect.
I just think it would be fun to create the effect the traditional way instead of throwing it together on my Mac.

Royston, here's how to do it.

    by rex_nimrod

Hi Royston Lodge, I don't know if it could be done with a super8, or any other film camera, it's a video feedback effect. The way I did it was to run the video camera out to the video in on the tv set to aux in, then point the lens at the screen. It looks alot like the Who openings from the first 4 Doctors. If you twist the camera around, it gets a wicked vortex like effect.
