Roman Carnage, Neil Marshall Style, In This Image From CENTURION!!

Published at:  Oct 06, 2009 9:46:36 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Empire has a pic or two from Neil Marshall's CENTURION.

The movie speculates on the fate of Rome's reputedly 'lost' Ninth Legion*, who in this take are north of Hadrian's Wall, engaged in a bloody battle and facing a bit of trouble getting out of hostile Pict country.

...explains Empire in its article. Follow the slaughter to find Empire's article (and another image from the film)!

Marhsall, whose works seems to sharply divide Geeks (I personally thought DOOMSDAY was 1/2 cool, 1/2 really lost), was recently rumored to be the probable director of the PREDATOR sequel/reboot thingie. The gig ultimately went to Nimrod Antal. If you haven't seen Antal's KONTROLL, check it out - it's pretty interesting.

Yeah it was an over the top Mad Max rip off, but it was great fun! The Last Legion which had a similar concept, also had some cool pre release images...and sucked bad - so I'll wait to hear more before I get excited. Badass Roman action is always welcome though!

    by crow3711

But I thought Doomsday seemed really, really cheesy and tried way too hard to be cool. Seemed like a pretty boilerplate post-apocalyptic tale. But The Descent is one of the only movies I've ever seen that actually scared me even a little bit (I don't dig the horror genre as a whole usually), and I've always heard Dog Soldiers was pretty solid, so I will keep my eye out on this one. Not a bad production still.

... but The Descent really is the best horror film of this decade. Just a perfect mix of everything that makes horror cinema great. Half cool and half lost is a good way of describing Doomsday. It was fun, though. That movie and beer are two of life's joys that should be enjoyed at the same time. More Neil Marshall goodness is always welcome. Maybe he can do for Roman action what Sam Raimi did for Westerns.

    by crow3711

I haven't seen enough of his work, but all I know is he beautifully delivered what I consider to be the absolute best line of dialogue from easily any movie this year, and possibly many previous. In Inglourious Basterds, but he was in disguise and the jig was up, as he slips from German to British, "Well, if this really is the end, old chap, I hope you don't mind if I go out speaking the King's." All of us can only hope to get the opportunity to be that fucking cool even once in our entire lives, and he nailed it. Consider me extremely interested after his portrayal of Lt. Archie Hicox. Because that was the fucking shit.

"Thriller" (I use the term VERY LOOSELY) with overhyped black egomaniac? Unfortunately, cheq. Since he covered ancient times already with 300 he wouldn't look twice here anyway. Anybody see his audition for Dracula in the Dracula 2000 dvd? Man sure puts %177 in his work.

All the grunting of women exerting themselves while jumping from rock to rock was embarrassing. It was like being forced to watch a dozen Monica Selles wannabes try to outdo each other for who could grunt the loudest.
I can't even imagine how excruciating it must have been for crewmen working on that set. All that angry estrogen being whipped into a feministic furor! Oy vey!
Neil Marshall is a very hit or miss director. Mostly miss, if you ask me. If this has any redeeming qualitites, it is that it will be blessedly devoid of tons of grunting women with penis envy.

From movies to TV, this blue tinting of everything just sucks the life out of it. It will be the tired, stale, dated "look" of the 2000s, and every time I see it as in the shots above, I immediately lose interest and think, "these people just aren't trying". Do you really think that making everything a dull, slate blue makes your work "gritty"? No, it just makes you look afraid to use color.

Dog Soldiers was ace, and Descent (uk version!) was fucking incredible. But Doomsday was really crap. Just a total mess with too much taken from other movies and not enough originality. Centurion doesn't sound too bad but I really don't like the idea of the Picts being portrayed as the bad guys and the Roman soldiers as the good guys. Hopefully its not gonna be as 'black and white' as that.

Romans fighting barbarians in a snowy forest...are they just following the Gladiator shooting locations via a map or something?

... unless you count your habit for crawling out from your cot in your parents' service porch, dragging your 315lb frame upstairs, and flogging your limp 4-inches while feeling up your sleeping 9-year-old sister. You GO, Casanova.

What's wrong buddy? Dad not let you taste his cock today? Don't be so angry bro....your venom and bile amuses me but does nothing to further any debate....except continue to prove many of our assertions that you are, in fact, an ignorant cunt. Prove me wrong.

I would have preferred they go the David Drake route

    by fluffyunbound

...and speculate that the Lost Legion was actually abducted by aliens, and employed by those aliens in wars of conquest against low-tech species. Now THAT would be cool to see on the big screen.

    1. Another semi-black and white violence fest where the only color is red for blood?
    2. A bunch of people on this site who have to fall back on silly sexual insults rather than something intelligent.

C'mon guys, you can do better.

Doomsday is quite underrated in here at AICN's geekry. for some reason, the majority of the geeks here find the shit that Michael Bay excusable (because it's FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN!!!), while they bitch and moan about a truly talented filmmaker like Neil Marshall, who boviously really loves movies and loves making them. Can you explain this? Can you explain this madness?Yes, Doomsday isn0't as good as The Descent and evne dog Sopldiers, but it was still loads of true movie fun, and i still can't wait to see the next Neil Marshall movie. He alone is 10 times better then all the hacks supported by AICN and their geeks put together.

Neil Marshall should had directed the Star Trek movie

    by asimovlives

I'm certain he knows, loves and respect Star Trek, and would make a movie that would reflect that.

The Lost Legion didn't got lost

    by asimovlives

They just mixed with the locals, married to the local girls, and got their children, and died there, and their descendants now live in scotland and wherever the scots emigrated during the 19th and 20th century. Reality is far less dramatic. Still interested in watching an historical ass-kicker Neil Marshall movie, of course.

I share your opinions of Dog soldiers and The Descent, but i think you are a bit unfair about Doomsday. Doomsday's problems, for me, is not so much stor,y acting, or direction, but that, for the first time in his career, Neil Marshall seemed to have lost a bit of his usual self-confidence. He over-edited the movie, and he over-used the score, as if he was affraid the movie was being boring or something. It's as if he had directed the movie, which still shows his usual panache, but was edited by some bitch who works for Micheal Bay. It's weird to see that movie for me, good pulp story, very well directed, and edited like shit.Still, you can't say a mvoie is all a waste when you can get a pretty cool scenes with a Bentley Continental GT. Marshall knows which cars to pimp for good cinematic looks. Even in that he's far better then the supposed car expert director Michael Shit Bay and his horrid banal choice of cars in his movies.
