Remember The Glory Of Hand Drawn Animation!! Unfinished Footage From Disney's THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG Hits The Net!!

Published at:  Oct 06, 2009 9:24:50 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Per the headline...

5 minutes (ish) of footage from THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG have appeared on YouTube - the film marks Disney's return to hand drawn animation.

In the interest of fair play: while evaluating its merits, please keep in mind this material is (quite clearly) unfinished.

To me? No matter how good the film ends up being, it sure is nice to see this gorgeous hand drawn stuff again.

The footage below gives us a nice sense of the film's atmosphere (at least in its opening moments). We also catch some hints of Randy Newman's score.

This one's from Ron Clements and John Musker (ALADDIN and THE LITTLE MERMAID).

If it's unfinished, that was not a very smart move from Disney.

They're not ignoring racial issues. Good stuff. I loved Aladdin and Lion King as a kid. Today, poor suckers are stuck with Chipmunks and the Shrek sequels (hey, the first one wasn't bad). Put me down for more hand drawn animation.

The animation's accomplished, but uninspired. The cat "comedy" was over the top. And the dialogue was kind of...icky. BUT...I realize this isn't for me. It's for li'l girls and maybe some li'l boys who don't have issues with gender identity (in other words, boys who won't think they'll get cooties from watching this). I'm not as hyped about PatF as I once was. Ah well...maybe after this another Lion King-quality 2D toon will arise. So I hope this'll make the bucks.

Item 2: what we are really talking about is the 2d look instead of rendered 3d realism. Feh. I'll take the CGI features.

Roll out the little-girl princess merchandise, folks! They've run out of ideas of how to re-issue "classics" every 2 years for parents of girls with "Barbie/Princess/Mermaid" or every other type of annoying song-based fairy freaking tale stuff. Gotta mine what worked and rake in the dollars at the expense of the insanity of little girls parents who have to undo the non-empowering damage this crap inflicts on them.

but hell, what is? The little white kid looked kind of freaky... guess they tried to give us a more modern look, but then the rest of the film looks like an attempt at old-style Disney. Odd. Anyway, guess if I was 6 I'd love it.

    by dennismm

one of the great American songwriters of the 20th century. Check out his albums from the '60s and '70s. Now he's something of a hack.

I like the hand-drawn look. To whomever referred to 3-D "realism," I must guffaw. Stuff does not look more real because it has curves or because they can make the elements appear to have depth. It's a trick!

The movie takes place in New Orleans, The Birthplace of Jazz, so they get Randy Newman. They couldn't find any jazz musicians? Did they all die in the hurricane? It's like having Bryan Adams doing the songs for that horse movie.

    3-D "realism,"

    by powerring

I must guffaw at hand drawn. They can't possible do lighting, transparency, explosions and other complex things (water) anywhere near as well. Realism? Toy Story! GMAFB! Nothing hand drawn looks that real. As to motion: so early Disney rotoscoped over real actors. I must Guffaw, because mocap works better. Pixar animation > Disney hand drawn.

So does every company have an internet douche that is hired to just look at these sites and report back to them like the fucking dogs they are. Maybe I'm nitpicking, but it still looks a little too "polished"

    by royston lodge

Obviously, I presume they're scanning the hand-drawn artwork into the computers and rendering the image electronically, rather than the traditional method of photographing each frame on something like an Oxberry.
I'm not blaming them for using a much more efficient process. It definitely creates a really really really polished final product.
The question is, is that such a good thing?
It's like, hand-drawn vs CGI could be compared to analog instruments vs. synthesizers. It's a totally different medium. So it's good to see hand-drawn again just like it's good to know that synthesizers haven't totally pushed aside things like guitars and drums and wind instruments, etc, etc.
But maybe Princess & Frog shows how digitally-mastered hand-drawn vs. photo-chemical hand-drawn is like compact discs vs. vinyl. Many people say they like the "warmth" of vinyl better, but it ain't EVER going to be the dominant format again.

The songs are usually what turns me off of these films

    by cylon_conspiracy

Randy Newman, Elton John, Phil Collins... yes in their day they were all quite innovative, but now they are just watered down composers. It's like Eddie Murphy. Sure he used to be an insanely funny and raunchy comedian. Now he's a watered down "family film" actor.

Maybe we just aren't in the age of musicals anymore, but it seems to me the classic Disney movies (say pre 70s)have timeless songs that just sound good. You can tell real composers and songwriters wrote them. These days it's more about giving the parents a name they remember from their earlier years so they can think they're being entertained.

Ever since The Little Mermaid the music has been watered-down adult-contemporary pseudo-broadway. The sort of musical pablum that people like David Foster inflict upon us.
Before The Little Mermaid, Disney's movies often featured rich jazz numbers, many of which have become standards that jazz musicians still record. Songs like "Everybody Wants to Be A Cat" or "Bear Necessities" or "I Wanna Be Just Like You".
Twenty years from now, I don't see too many artists eager to record new versions of "A Whole New World" or "Be Our Guest" or "Under The Sea".

Seriously. OK, so they hired some people who can DRAW... phenomenal. Like, THAT'S never been done before. These a-holes GAVE UP on this medium, then Miyazaki smacks their asses HARD with some amazing films- films so good DISNEY HAD TO BUY THE DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS- and now after years of shitting on 2-d, they think they can just jump on back in with this tired, formulaic crap and all will be forgiven?
NO WAIT, let's REALLY cash in- make it SET IN NEW ORLEANS!!! Then everyone will think they're HEROES.

    by ahoi

Jeeez, what's wrong with you guys? Where does all that hatred towards this great composer come from? All these people thinking that he's a fading artist have no idea what they're talking about. Just listen to his latest stuff. There is still relevance and truth in his songs and he's one of the few american artists who have strong and inconvenient opinions and are not afraid to put them in his songs. His latest movie scores were great and he deserves each and every oscar nomination he's ever had. Toy Story wouldn't be that emotional without his contribution - and Disney films wouldn't be the same without the singing!
