Morricone Conducts Morricones At The Hollywood Bowl October 25th!

Published at:  Oct 04, 2009 10:15:29 PM CDT

Greetings! ScoreKeeper here to tell you a little secret where you can discover gold! No, it’s not buried in an unmarked grave next to Arch Stanton’s final resting place…It’s at the Hollywood Bowl!

One of the greatest and most prolific film composers to ever grace our fine planet will be making his debut at the Hollywood Bowl on October 25th, 2009. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood will feature the legendary Ennio Morricone conducting his own music along with a new piece composed by son Andrea Morricone entitled “Adesso for Strings” which Ennio commissioned specifically to commemorate this event.

Although this is the first time both father and son have collaborated on a live performance, collaboration is a practice both are familiar with. Andrea Morricone wrote the magnificent “Love Theme” from CINEMA PARADISO (1988) which won England’s coveted BAFTA award. Father Morricone composed the score.

“For anyone to have the opportunity to score a piece of music commissioned by Ennio Morricone is obviously an honor and unique pleasure,” said composer Andrea Morricone. “What makes this special for me is that my father has never conducted in Los Angeles, the home of American film, and it is truly an honor just being a part of this historic event. We first were able to collaborate together on the film CINEMA PARADISO more than twenty years ago. It will be a thrill for both of us to hear my music conducted by my father for the very first time next month.”

The elder Morricone will conduct music from his scores from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (1966), THE UNTOUCHABLES (1987), CINEMA PARADISO (1988), ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA (1984), THE MISSION (1986), ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968), A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS (1964), SACCO AND VANZETTI (1971), THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS (1966), A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE (1971), and U TURN (1997).

I'm still disappointed that Morricone didn't score Inglourious Basterds, but at least Tarantino used a lot of his classic tracks.

Only fools and/or rich people pay $25+ parking. Park for free and take the shuttle in ($4 or free with Metro Monthly Pass) : http://tinyurl.com/3bnypg

Wish I could be out there for this

    by retlaw kciuq

I'm not a Morricone listener. As big as a film fan as I am, I'm sorely lacking in watching the films he's conducted. I've seen everything else but.. I'll change that soon. Wish I could go. I saw Williams at the Bowl and while I would have appreciated more than an hour of Potter (just make the announcement that you're doing the last FILM, please sir) and then whatever was left after, I still really like these soothing film score sessions. Would love to attend this but a random trip out would cost mucho mucho dollars.

    CHEAP PARKING TIPS

    by s0nicdeathmonkey

The Hollywood Bowl has a great program with the MTA whereby you go to most any train station in the larger LA region and pay a buck fifty for a bus ticket. Then you get on a comfy bus (NOT an MTA bus but a travel bus) and get taken directly to the front of the bowl. On the way back tickets are another buck fifty. Meanwhile, you can park at the train station/bus depot for free. It's easy, it's cheap, it lets you drink at the show, and it's super low stress. I never drive to the bowl anymore.

Well, I was in the parking lot of the Hollywood bowl, and not at an actual concert, but hey, it was still Bill.

Tickets on sale since September 20th????

    by traumnovelle

I really appreciate the link and the heads-up and all, but fuck. There were probably cheaper seats the first few days the tickets were being sold. REALLY could have done with an immediate notice. God fucking dammit.

I would have paid for a round-trip ticket from Seattle to LA in a heartbeat. I would flown right back that same night.

Well, now I know to keep my eyes peeled from now on. It sucks to say, but Ennio is not going to be around much longer, and I really need to see him conduct live. That would make me immensely happy.

I totally fucked it up when I searched for tickets. Now I'm seeing some nosebleeds for $35 a pop. That is definitely do-able. Hmmmmmmmm.

I would give my left testicle to fly from the UK to Hollywood to see that concert, just to hear the finale music to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and For A Few Dollars More.

Unfortunatly, I'm poor, live in the UK...and not that attractive!

I stumbled upon a CD at the library of Yo-Yo Ma covering classic title tracks from Ennio's filmography. Ennio conducted and had a hand in the production process, as well. If you're a fan of soundtracks you'll like it a lot. If not, go get your shine box you mook.

    cheap seats -- traumnovelle

    by guy grand

Dude, if you're flying in from Seattle to see and hear this, just lay down the credit card for the $150 seats. We're all in debt, I'm poor as shit, but this is once in a lifetime. The cheap seats at the Bowl suck because that far back there's invariably a bunch of fuckers talking all around you and the music tends to not carry as well as it does at that venue as it does at the Greek Theatre. Just go into debt like me and sit 8 rows back in a box seat and drink it in. I'll find some way to fucking pay for this down the road. Ennio, he's the Maestro! And not here much longer....

I went to the London show a year or so ago, it was incredible. He had about 30 musicians and another 30 choir belting out the hits, plus I got to meet the maestro (and Richard Stanley) afterwards. Just drop everything and go, it's not the kind of thing that will happen that often.

I doubt Morricone even talks about "The Thing". Ever wondered why the opening theme to "The Thing" sounds remarkably like the opening theme to "Escape From New York"? It's because Carpenter recut Morricone's music and added his own synth backbeats. Morricone, quite rationally, asked him afterwards why he'd bothered to hire him

    by scarywaitress

Untouchables was FLAWLESS, as is the Mission theme. Cinema Paradiso will break a grown man's heart. This man is a god.
Unfortunately, I, like FreeMonk, am also poor... although I'm kind of cute. Not cute-enough-to-score-free-airline-tickets material, maybe, but maybe cute enough to shake my ass into one of those $35 seats if I got there...

Main theme and the musical fob-watch melody. Jesus H. Christ on a Kawasaki. Incandescent. Envy people who make this: the NYC one a while back was locked down within seconds.
