Is DEXTER This Week Finally Caught And Brought To Justice?? Capone Appraises 4.2!!

Published at:  Oct 04, 2009 5:25:25 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

SPOILER!! This week’s installment? Disappointingly devoid of old-man nakedness! As are the next two episodes! Here’s our man in the Midwest with what to expect instead tonight:

Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago.

Well, I've seen the first four episodes of Season 4 of everybody's favorite Showtime serial killer series "Dexter," and I'm happy to report that the show continues to impress me, especially now that we have another bone fide nut job for Dexter and crew to hunt down. This season, we are introduced to a character known as the Trinity Killer (played by nudie boy John Lithgow) and reintroduced to now-retired FBI Agent Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine), causing strife in Debra's love life and seeking aide in solving the latest Trinity killings from none other than Dexter.

What's the title of "Dexter" 402?
"Remains To Be Seen"

Who directed?
Brian Kirk, who has helmed several episodes on such shows as "The Tudors," "The Riches," "Brotherhood," and the acclaimed British series "Father & Son."

Who wrote it?
Series executive producer Charles H. Eglee, who penned two previous "Dexter" episodes last season. Eglee was also an executive producer on "The Shield," "Dark Angel," and "Murder One."

Where do we pick things up?
Okay, for the record, I deliberately misled everyone about how last week's episode ended with Dexter in a terrible car accident with a trunkful of body parts and killing equipment in his car. It was just too good and ending to give away or even hint at. I won't do it again. This episode opens with Dexter waking up in an ambulance, immediately remembering that there's still something in his trunk. After getting word of a mild concussion from his doctor, Dex still sneaks out of the hospital to go deal with his mess

When the police and accident investigators look into Dexter's car, they find body parts, and send him away for life, right?
No. But when Dexter finally does make it back to the accident scene, he is met by Harry, which triggers dizzy spell and some seriously foggy memories about what the hell happened to those arms, legs, torso, and head.

Does the Trinity Killer do anything exciting this week?
Exciting might be too strong a word, but compelling and curious are certainly in the running. The first sighting of Trinity is him drinking coffee watching a woman nearby who we assume is his next victim. Later in the episode, Trinity has a creepy interaction involving the young son of his intended victim and ice cream. When Trinity finally meets his next victim for the first time, he's walking his dog.

Any other cases for the detectives to fret over?
Another tourist shooting finally gets the media's attention, making these cases more of a priority than Lundy's possible Trinity killing. Still, Debra does interview one potential suspect in the Trinity murder who has a connection to the first victim.

Is the status quo of the squad room really being maintained?
The secret relationship between Angel and Lt. Laguerta is still clearly a delicate balancing act. Also, Debra confronts Lundy to get closure on their history. Lundy reveals to Debra why he's really in Miami.

Does Dexter find his latest victim's body parts?
While pounding Red Bull and other caffeinated products, he goes back to the abandoned gym where the killing took place, looks around the bushes near the accident sight, and generally stumbles around in a half-awake/half-asleep state being hounded by the ghost of Harry.

What I liked.
For the second week in a row, the Trinity killer is the most interesting aspect to the episode, despite the fact that his storyline in no way intersects directly with any other character. Plot-wise, the episode feels like it's linking the strong opener with a launch into some serious investigating, but it still works because Lithgow shows us the kinder face of Trinity that is hiding some incredibly hideous shit. Sleep-deprived Dexter is fun for one or two episodes, but we need to reel him in so he can be functional on and off the job. And I'm digging the Angel/Laguerta sexual tension, mainly because I find Lauren Vélez to be a devastatingly gorgeous woman, and I have since she was the doctor on "Oz" many years ago.

What I didn't like.
Pretty much everything from last week still holds. Although there's less of Dexter the Suburbanite in this episode; he's back with a vengeance next week.

How does it end?
A baby cries. Someone says, "Fuck."

    Leno making Letterman jokes now?

    by flandersbum

Didja see the joke about Letterman's sex scandal that Jay Leno made Friday? I figured he would try and stay 'classy' and above it all. I figured wrong. Guess nothing is off limits when it comes to comedy.

I don't want it to be true (I love Lundy), but the way they introduced Lundy last week, he sounded like a man whose world was ending.Maybe it was just the way Carradine played him. I don't know.

you could very well be right. ausiello revealed in his column a few weeks back that a major character would die at the hands of the trinity killer early on this season. lundy would be the odds-on favorite, i think. also, am i the only one who thinks "dexter" is better when the season's main antagonist isn't so present -- a la season one with the ice truck killer? it's one thing when you have antagonists personally involved with dexter -- like lila and prado -- but i prefer the main bad guy/girl shrouded in mystery.

I Still Think The Cliffhanger Sucked

    by crow3711

and can only lead to utter contrivances on the part of multiple police officers. There is no way his car is taken away, demolished, by a tow truck or whoever, without them checking his truck. It's just not realistic, and it was an incredibly forced and stupid cliffhanger. The only way out of that situation is through complete nonsense and convenient writing. I just don't buy it. Dexter should have realistically been caught long before this happened, but I was always willing to believe his ACTIONS managed to sneak him through each time. But this is just too much. He's unconscious surrounded by body parts. Stupid.

Well, I've been saying for ages that Rita might get killed off if she helped Dexter become too normal (hence ruining the premise of the show). But given that this would lead to Dexter having three children to take care of, he'd have no time to be a serial killer. So odds are she's going to live as long as they do (I don't think the writers have the audacity to kill the entire family). So given what you've said, Lundy is looking like a good candidate. Crap.As for the "shrouded in mystery" thing, it can go both ways. Sauron in "Lord of the Rings" not showing up on screen made him mysterious, and hence larger than life (good thing). On the other hand, mysterious villains can't do great performances. Imagine "The Dark Knight" if you didn't see the Joker until the end of the movie. I think it'd suffer tremendously.

    by crow3711

I said the cliffhanger was forced and dopey and the only way around it was through contrivance. I'm disappointed they took that route just to give themselves a decent cliffhanger for the premiere. I'd rather just have them tell the story than use bombastic events to up the tension. There are better ways. That has nothing to do with me watching the show or not. I really just wanted to hear other people's thoughts on said cliffhanger. I'm sorry if I came off a little harsh.

    predictions for this season

    by gavinvandraven

goddammit, i KNEW batista and Laguerta were going to hook up. i wish i would have said something on here weeks ago! i saw that coming a mile away

in every season so far, someone knows what Dexter is. his brother in season 1, Lila and Doakes in season 2, and Miguel in season 3.

Deb is already investigating her father's CI's, and will soon learn that Dexter's bio mother was Rudy's bio mother.... so Deb will know what Dexter is by the end of the season. in the first novel, she is already aware of the fact and actually helps cover for him. its the logical direction for the story to go.

Lundy's time is up, for sure... but hear is one you didnt think of. i also believe Dexter may split from Rita. Trinity is so successful in evading capture because he has no family, Dexter will see that having a family will be his downfall and he and Rita will split, and then of course get back together later. just my 2 cents. carry on!

It's still not as good at all, but its a fantastic show, and the Caffee brothers both are fantastically realized characters. I too am disappointed that Dexter gets all the hype and publicity, and no one even watches Brotherhood. Same thing happened to The Wire against The Sopranos. The weaker show won.

what Dexter is? That he knows what he does? That, since he isn't harming "innocent" people - actually doing the Dark Avenger work - that he's left him open and available to help him with Trinity? To make sure Dexter ends his obsession with Trinity in his own special way?

I don't get that impression. I feel that Lundy's the kind of guy with a single-minded pursuit of justice. . .and while this might mean he would use Dexter to his own ends to catch Trinity, Lundy's also the kind of guy that's obsessive about his work. He catches killers for a living, and working with one and having him loose like Dexter would be far outside his comfort zone.
I think, though, that Lundy *feels* something about Dexter--he can discern that Dexter has great hunches when it comes to murderers, and he can also discern that Dexter's great work at blood spatter makes him the perfect analyst. But that's probably as far as Lundy knows about Dexter. Although, your guess certainly seems valid, and would certainly make for an interesting dynamic.

Once again better than this seasons Mad Men

    by frodofraggins

I don't know what the point of Mad Men is this season, but it has focused too much attention on Betty Draper and that actress can't act for shit. I found early mad men interesting as it revealed who Don Draper is and was. And it also did a good job of representing advertising and the male chauvinist world of the early 60's. At this point MM is just going through the motions, I don't think Weiner really thought out the show in the long term. My problem with MM at this point is that I don't really care about any of the characters anymore.
Dexter does a great job at building suspense and tension. I'm hoping the Trinity killer kills Deborah, as the actress playing her is by far the weak link acting wise on the show.

    by thewaqman

that's not Dexter. Seriously that fat latin guy and his office romance with the head is just so corny. And Deborah's acting is way over the top. And the plotline with the reporter and Quinn is fairly predictable too. This show is completely reliant on Michael C. Hall's great performance. That and Keith Carradine is alright.

    Cliffhanger

    by watch_the_world_burn

I haven't seen this second episode yet, but I figured the danger Dexter faced was his trunk would bust open during the crash. If the trunk is still intact the cops wouldn't search it - all the accidents I know of with police involved, they never once searched any of the cars (quite a lucky thing for one of my mates!). Not sure if that's relevant, just responding to Crow above.
A few people have mentioned Brotherhood and got me intrigued, I will definitely check it out.
Oh, and please don't compare the writing of Dexter and Mad Men - MM has so many layers to its writing, it's not a show you can just "sit and watch" like Dexter. Don't get me wrong, I think Dexter is well written with some sharp stuff in there, as well as some hilarious yet dark moments. But the writing on Mad Men is more significant, the humour more subtle and hence (to me) more rewarding. And the underplay of MM gives its shocking moments more impact. I always give each episode a second viewing, to pick up on anything I may have missed. Not many shows make me want to do that.
By the way Waqman, did you know the "fat latin guy" used to be a cop? Just seems funny to me because he's the least convincing! Then again, I've never worked for the Miami PD so what would I know.

    I Was Right, Utter Contrivance

    by crow3711

So you are all right, the body wasn't in the car. however, do you all realize we just got an entire episode of Dexter, the serial killer manhunter, forgot where he PUT THE BODY. Bullshit. I'm sorry, I still love the show, it was still more enjoyable than a lot of other things, but I can't buy the episode if I don't buy the most basic premise it is based on. That would never fucking happen. I get high and lose my keys sometimes. Dexter is a serial killer, a hunter and a predator. I don't care how tired he is, that would never happen. And the writers fucking know that. So they shoved some of the most heavy-handed garbage down our throats with that shit about Harry. Those were some of the dopiest lines trying to force in a thematic resonance of this all being connected, and then because they know it doesnt quite work, they cant do it the smart way and show us how everything in Dexter's life is connected, they have to TELL us with the worst dialogue ever. I'm sorry, everyone is gonna rip me apart, I know. The episode was good, but I can't like it because its basic premise is completley fucking retarded. And who didn't know they were gonna be in the rafters from the beginning? I mean come on. And Dexter would have figured that out about 2 days before I did. I can't stand that. This little arc was the definition of forcing a situation to up tension. Silly. I said the only way they wouldn't find the body was utter contrivance, and I was right. Dexter climbed up in the rafters, hid the body way out of the way, and then managed to forget that he did all of that work. I don't care how tired you are...no.

    by itrainmonkeys

he didn't just forget like....."now where did I put that body? I coulda swore I left it here somewhere.". No....he hid the body on purpose with the intent of going back and finishing the job. Then, in the middle of a sleepy haze he gets into a brutal car wreck that definitely jarred his memory and left him with short term memory loss like the doctor said. It's not like Dexter of season one forgot where he put the body. The whole point of this season is to show how the new baby and family life will affect his killing. Is it "utter contrivance" or a well-written bait-and-switch. I thought it was fine.

The Only Way to Get Rid of Rita...

    by _maltheus_

...would be to kill Dexter's son. Gruesome, but then you can have a thing where she couldn't forgive him (cause it's related to his job or some shit). It would also steer him darker, which this show needs to keep from losing its edge. I know they won't do that however.
This season seems to continue the trend of being worse than the previous one. I still think of it as one of the best shows on TV, but I prefer my shows to improve and become bolder with time.
And Brotherhood does indeed rock. Especially the last season. Even if the series finale had a bit of a Sopranos finale vibe to it. I'd compare it more to the Wire than to Dexter though.

    by thewaqman

was way better than Sopranos. It had actual closure. With Tommy Caffee going higher up in office (by making sacrifices you thought he wouldn't have been capable of at the start of the show) and Michael Caffee in exile once again. The final scene when Tommy tells his brother he has to leave, and Michael understands, was one of the best in the series. What's all this about another season?

There is no season 4 of Brotherhood...

Showtime said they ended it at season 3. Because the moronic dickhead viewers liked Dexter more....I made up the last part.

What the hell? What's up with the bad performance. Usually life experience and such tends to translate well when you play the same role.

Just because you made it up doesn't mean it isn't true. People almost always like the inferior series. Sopranos vs The Wire. Same thing. At least HBO let The Wire run its course though.

    Brotherhood's 4th Season

    by _maltheus_

I didn't know it for sure, but both epguides.com and tv.com have a placeholder for season 4, episode 1. However, I'm seeing articles from this past summer talking about it being canceled, so I guess those sites are incorrect. Sorry if I got anyone's hope up.

I agree with you, maelstrom, that Lundy feels something about Dexter... maybe that is all I'm sensing. And I think Hairy Nutsack is right about Lundy not letting Doakes take the fall for Dexter - had not thought of that.
