‘Once You Choose, There Will Be No Going Back!’ The Trailer For Syfy’s THE PHANTOM Miniseries/ Pilot Is On YouTube As Well!!
I am – Hercules!!
The coming “Phantom” miniseries doesn’t appear to have any sci-fi in it, but that’s okay, because it’s not airing on SciFi.
Coming in 2010 from Syfy:
Can it possibly live up to the 1996 Billy Zane movie?

...very little of interest.
-
I'm a big Phantom fan, but I'm also a big hater of "reimagined" classics. I'll watch it when it comes out though.
-
this actually doesn't suck as much as I expected...
-
I can't even start to tell you everything that's wrong with this... and yes, I liked the Billy Zane movie. If the costume is changed, it undermines the entire "ghost who walks" premise. Where's the badass Skull Cave? Looks like they're giving it the Flash Gordon treatment.
-
Only someone that doesn't know how to spell Sci-Fi could think of this garbage.
-
it doesnt look vomit inducing.
-
His Costume looks Horrible.
-
Look amazing in comparison to that Billy Zane crapfest. Seriously, the 1996 version looks more like a TV show then this new one. I'll probably give it a shot.
-
Does that ever look like a smoking turd! Say what you will about the Billy Zane one, this one has the same monkey stink as that Flash Gordon redo from last year.
-
In fact, I watched it again the other day and, yep, still liked it. Actually I bought it on Amazon along with The Rocketeer and The Shadow. I was in a retro superhero mood. (Rocketeer is up there with Jurassic Park as one of my sentimental all time faves.)
-
I didn't hate. It's actually a lot of fun. Nothing about this new one makes me think Phantom. Plus the 1996 version had Patrick McGoohan. Can't go wrong there.
-
is fucking hideous. Why do those classic purple tights catch so much shit? Purple is regal, bitch. Phantom is the king of the fucking jungle.
-
I liked the Phantom 2040 cartoon.
-
I'm right there with ya. I was really hoping for franchises from all of those films you mentioned.
-
The living knife in The Shadow is one of the most devilishly deadly concepts in movie/tv history. I put it up there with the awesomely scar living smoke in Lost.
-
about that Shadow knife when she was little. Scared the bejeesus outta her at the time.
-
thiiiiiiiiiiisss suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks!
-
And this is coming from a HUGE Phantom fan. Bring back Phantom 2040
! -
and Stan Lee's Lightspeed comes....The Phantom....
-
Phantom 2040 was done by the same guy that did Aeon Flux, correct?
-
The one and only.
-
It had the same vibe as The Shadow; old school radio serial writ large on the silver screen. Which is how they should do The Green Hornet, by the way.
-
1) The new costume looks God awful. He appears to be wrapped up in foam like a knight at a Renaissance fair or someone's homemade riot gear.
2) I agree that the purple costume could work on film. They just need to change the shade of purple to something less "gay".
TV/Film isn't limited to the same POW colour choices you have in newspapers (and later comics). The reason the suit is the shade it is isn't because that the colour it was supposed to be, but instead it was the shade of purple they could make for the Sunday newspaper comics.
Leave the suit purple but make it a darker shade of purple. Or a bluer shade of purple.
Look they got around the X-Men spandex with suits that looked fine even believable. You can tweak the purple suit without getting rid of it. -
Looks like cheap Canadian crap. I'm not in the habit on hating things out of the gate, but I can't help but hate this (right out of the gate). What a mess. I mean, the commercial shows that it's trying to be "young," "hip," "edgy," and taking every other hacky approach the lunkheaded producers could think of (after watching SMALLVILLE). And instead, it just looks lame. Who asked you to "reimagine" anything, motherfuckers?
Props to LastOfTheV8Interceptors on comparing it to the godawful FLASH GORDON from a few years back. I predict it limps through syfy's intial order of episodes before mercifully being taken off the air. -
HAAARD!!!
-
The point of wearing the same old costume is to make the Phantom's enemies believe he cannot be killed, or that he always returns from the dead.
And that's besides the fact that this new costume sucks donkey balls. -

Fucking GOLD.
-
Only someone that doesn't know how to spell Sci-Fi could think of this garbage.
-
A timid, cheap-looking "modern" version that lacks the courage of its convictions. And it's from Robert Halmi, who brought us that earlier stinker. Pass.
-
..That movie makes me smile every time i see it. And Treat Williams is sooo over the top i can't help but laugh whenever he's on screen.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the purple suit. All they had to do was darken it a shade or two and it would have worked. -
... any SyFy in it? Inquiring minds want to know. But in fairness, the costume looks like a ballet outfit. It ain't the color, it's the tight-tights. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
-
... I mean the original costume looks like a ballet outfit. Something a little bulkier and protective wouldn't hurt so that the Phantoms don't need to get replaced so quite often.
-
Every time they showed the Phantom's inner sanctum, there were always the pictures on the walls of all the previous Phantoms before him. And they all looked exactly alike. White guys in purple suits. You know the natives that worked for him used to switch them around on the walls all the times and laugh when the grimace-lookin' douchebag never noticed the difference.
-
B & C-level "guest stars", e.g. Robert Wagner, Bruce Boxleitner, Michael Gross, Burt Ward, Mike Farrell, Jeff Conaway, etc.
-
Really, it looks silly, as does the old one!!!!!
-
I was willing to go along til the guy showed up in a purple snowsuit. Awful. The co-called "cheesy" original suit looked 10 times better.
-
Prince fucking owns all your motherfucking asses!
-
Couldn't they make a suit that looked like the old one, but appeared mostly black with a sheen of purple? Black normally, but with a hint of that dreaded lavender? Like really, really dark purple? In the comice Daredevil's suit picked up the shadows all the time and sometimes didn't look red until he was on top of motherfuckers ( I know it's a comic, but give it a try, man!)
-
They want their hero character arc back. Thank you.
-
1) What hero gets bested by snowballs? and 2) look at the package on that skull-wearing villain! 70s cock right there!
-
It got it right, it didn't talk down to the audience, and had style to spare. This, the Billy Zane nonsense, and pretty much any other incarnation is crap.
-
this miniseries looks horrible and that new costume is smallville stupid.
I actually would rather see a sequel staring Zane again. Probably more so than Rogans Hornet flick. -
Saturday matinee fun serial adventure throwback flick. it was even better than the last indy flick.
-
Terrible new costume.
-
Like The Shadow or The Rocketeer, although both of those are far superior, but the Phantom is great switch off the brain and watch on a lazy afternoon.
-
Looks better than whatever SWAT outfit he's got on in that trailer
-
Because i went to see the debacle that was the Billy Zane version at the cinema.
The Shame! The Shame! -
As others have mentioned, the 1996 PHANTOM is fun entertainment in the same vein as THE SHADOW or THE ROCKETEER. Treat Williams can't act for shit in it, but Zane is a solid Phantom and the supporting cast of Kristy Swanson, Patrick McGoohan and a smoking-hot-in-her-prime Catherine Zeta-Jones more than make up for Williams' hammy so-called acting.
-
By the way, love the purple beanie dude. Looks like it belongs in the same TV puniverse as Smallville if you ask me!
-
I tend to feel that the Phantom was one of those characters whose costume hasn't aged well. On the other hand, the above suggestion about doing blackish purple could work.
-
I always wondered what would happen
if one of the Phantom's sons wanted
to be a bicycle repairman instead of a superhero. -
The only classic hero i want to see on tv is The Shadow.. i for one love the baldwin pic and I would love ti see it on tv fuck the Phantom
-
But fell short of being great. The fights, I remember, were awesome.
-
Forget what I said about the fights.
-
He's a cool dude.
-
10 bucks says this Phantom is snowboarding by episode 3.
-
Movie was cool, as were the Rocketeer and (to a lesser extent) The Shadow. These are the types of movie Hollywood seem to be turning their back on; solid, fun entertainment chasing instead the flagpole blockbuster... Not every movie can gross $500 Million you know!
-
Doesn't look like complete shite. Looks like a SyFy miniseries. If you're the kind of viewer who can put up with the flaws inherent with a SyFy miniseries, it looks like it might be a good one.
-
Acting and production values look like crap. Just ain't gonna work with this type of material.
-
...he'll wear the unbelievably retarded mess of a 'superhero' suit that the 'SyFy' channel whipped up for him? Probably the worst suit ever put on film. The movie looks like predictable action-film/superhero fodder but production values look pretty good. Won't be tuning in. Btw, I've always liked Zanes' 'Phantom'. He was cool.
-
It almost looks as bad, as the Flash Gordon TV series, from last year. I agree, the new costume looks bad, Batman nipple bad.
-
And I thought Nipples on the batsuit were Gay..this has Joel Schumacer's and Uwe Boll's Musky Man stink all over it
-

Reminds me of that crappy Reb Brown Captain America from the 70s
by thecomedian
Your father was a great hero blah blah blah...
-
Was in the film, Titanic.
-
but they really need to make a live action Phantom:2040. Batman Beyond owes it's whole existence to that and Spider-Man 2099.
-
r a rough crowd!wasn't the fan of zane's like u fellas.i think it looks pretty good.remember-no one thought galactica would work.@ least give it a shot before crapping all over it!
-
Trashing it even before you've seen it. Oh wait, this is Talkback. It looked violent, bloody, and interesting. The suit needs work, but I am kinda impressed by the production value. Count me in.
-
That's how I was first exposed to this franchise, seeing it on channel 5 ktla on Sundays way back when.
-
"oh, that knife" my god, the way Baldwin says it is hilarious. its extremely terrible and yet awesome at the same time. i crack up everytime i see that scene.
-
Actually, if memory serves, there was a line in that scene where Shiwan Khan talked about knives in general, then pulled out the phurba. In that context, Cranston's line made sense (as in, "Oh, you were talking about THAT knife.")Thing was, they deleted the original line (I think it was in the theatrical version, but deleted when they put it on VHS and such), so Cranston's tone makes no sense.
-
...is kinda special in that it's one of the very few movies to take liberties with a well known character's origin and kind of improve on it IMO. I usually hate when movies mess with the source material.
-
When the Flash was on CBS, they costume was terrific. Bright red, didn't skimp on the authentic design. Tone down the purple, make it Flash style, and it could work. Slight tweaking is necessary not this snowboarding moron. I think they went with this costume so they could hire the pretty boy nobody without paying a trainer to get him into superhero shape and wear the purple tights.
-
...meet up with Sucky SyFy Flash Gordon, and get introduced to Sucky SyFy Mandrake and Sucky SyFy Lothar?
-
Nolan. More angsty re-imagining for the Justin Timberlake set. It'll be over before you know it.
-
I always thought that some lines were removed from the theatrical version, but just figured i saw it as a kid and didnt remember correctly.
Do you remember the scene with the scientist where Baldwin names the "atomic bomb" and it kinda made sense after what the scientist said in the movies but not on VHS? thats been bugging me for a while now. -
So does that mean this is a sequel to the 96 film?
-
the "new Goblin" costume in Spider-Man 3 that Harry Osborn wore...pitiful.
-
Will it be "Reimagined" for the next generation?
-
I agree. Doesn't look too bad but then i'm a chick and the guy's kinda hot. I'll watch it for that alone.
-
. . . the new Phantom Limb show.
-
I agree 100% with the new suit, it's just another rubber\leather impossible in real life to move in thanks to Tim Burton ala Batman piece of crap. As for a real "Phantom" movie? Go find the 1940 Republic serial. They were not afraid to wear the purple (even nif it was in black and white)!!
-
The Shadow was a pretty lame movie, and I'm a big fan of the character. It was just a big mess. The Phanton was just plain fun. I think people hate on it because it didn't star a big name in the title role and also a lot of people just aren't that familiar with the character at all. This new stuff looks like typiical SyFy crap and I won't even bother watching it. All their original stuff sucks mega-ultra-hyper-giganto cock.
-
I thought Shadow was good too
-
ROY TAM: I guess you could call it an implosive/explosive submolecular device.LAMONT CRANSTON: Or an atomic bomb.ROY TAM: Hey, that's catchy. That scene? Made sense to me, but then I haven't watched the movie in a while. So maybe you're right.
-
Yeah thats it.
I kinda remember Roy giving more detail and some of the words making up atomic - so Lamont just shortened it or something. -
WHAT a judgmental group. We haven't even seen the series yet. If you are going to do Phantom...yeah, you've got to have the purple suit. Any guy who will wear that in the jungle is probably NOT to be messed with. The man is greater than the shade!
-
The phantom of my childhood was in black and white - but the covers always showed him wearing a suit much more towards the dark blue end of the spectrum. Always hated the purple shade used in the movie, which otherwise was quite fun and campy.
