HEROES In Ratings Basement!! LIE TO ME Plummets 41%!! TRAUMA Tanks!! Monday Ranks!!

Published at:  Oct 01, 2009 12:15:40 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Only two premieres, of “Trauma” and “Lie To Me,” last night. The 18-49 rankings (last week in parentheses):

5.7 (6.5) House
5.1 (4.6) Big Bang Theory
4.7 (4.4) Two and a Half Men
4.1 (4.3) CSI: Miami
3.6 (4.1) Dancing With The Stars
3.6 (3.5) How I Met Your Mother
3.1 (3.2) Accidentally On Purpose
2.9 (----) Lie To Me
2.3 (2.3) Castle
2.3 (----) Trauma
2.3 (2.7) Heroes
1.8 (1.8) The Jay Leno Show
1.2 (1.2) One Tree Hill
1.2 (1.1) Gossip Girl

* “Big Bang Theory” hit its best number yet.

* “Heroes” looks like it’ll soon be grounded.

* “Lie To Me” lost almost half the audience of “House,” its Fox lead-in. It was down 44% from its January premiere. Fox pays Tim Roth a weekly fortune for this series.

* “Trauma,” with its helicopter crashes and freeway mayhem, opened weak but still pulled better numbers than NBC’s other Monday-night shows, “Heroes” and “Jay Leno.”

Whether it's Conan or Leno, someone's about to get paid the fuck off. Conventional wisdom says it may be Conan, with Rocky Dennis moving back to The Tonight Show. I hope they don't go that route. There is no guarantee that Leno's audience will return with him. He might have such a stink on him, that it taints whatever comeback he may have. They should pay Jay off, and give Conan a chance. I know his ratings suck, but it's a good show. He's been down before, and succeeded. I think if you let him dig in and really take aim at Letterman, he can eventually beat him. Or, maybe NBC is just irreparably fucked.

Heroes should have had a new cast every season

    by nasty in the pasty

It's dragging out all of the characters that has killed the show (aside from the bad "re-set the show every eight episodes" thing). They kill Ali Larter's character...only to bring out her TWIN SISTER?! That's total soap opera bullshit. It's amazing how well Lost handled time travel in it's fifth season, and how ineptly Heroes has handled the same concepts. If they had set a new storyline that BUILT upon the first season, only following an all-new batch of heroes (with the occasional cameo from Hiro and such), the show would have been a lot better.

    by thedarklinglord

I was actually hoping this season would shake things up, or even just change the scenery and that it would be an entire season - or even half a season - devoted to the atmosphere of the mental health clinic and exploring the inner workings of House, with Andre Braugher getting a substantial role. Instead, it looks like it's just going to be business as usual. Don't get me wrong, even at its worst House is still infinitely more watchable that most of the shit on TV, but it seems like a missed opportunity.

    Digital TV = Falling Ratings?

    by arzbest

I haven't heard this idea mentioned yet. I know a lot of people (including myself) who, ever since the switch to digital TV, have lost access to at least some stations. I have a tiny TV I watch about 5 minutes a day in the morning and am able to pick up only 2 out of 14 stations with any consistency. That's with an antenna, re-scanning, etc. I figure if I'm having this problem, others are too, to varying degrees. If you're not able to pick up the channel anymore, you can't watch the show. Just a thought...

I wish I could find the link, but in the last week or so, I read a tech article that blasted the conversion. Seems the lower channels 2-6 are having a hellish time. Something to do with the bandwidth in the lower number range. Anyhow, the gov won't let them use more power to boost the signal, fearing interference, and they won't let them go back to analog. In my market, the NBC affiliate is the highest numbered station and it comes in crystal clear. ABC is low and now, all i get is a blank screen, where before all I had is a little snow. FML

It still has nothing to do with Nielsen Data though...

    by mr. profit

The system is flawed. Having worked for a network when I found out how bullshit the ratings system really was it was a real shock to the system. They use statistics to pretty much assume what the larger number is based on a small percentage of Nielsen homes. It's all bullshit. There are no accurate ways of counting the ratings for a show unless each television was made with some sort of electronic counter to count what is watched. But that won't happen. Also certain demographics are underrepresented. I heard about an idea for the future for a built in sensor that would count how many eyeballs watched a screen. Sounded crazy but you never fucking know.

But of course we'll soon have TV-to-movies!

    by flurryofchocolateglazedkrispykremedonuts

Yeah... thanks to the success of the Three Whores and Their Mother movie (Sex and the City) there's rumors of a Friends motion picture. Sure, it's just a rumor from the out-of-work actor who played the coffee shop guy, but I'm betting it'll happen. Then, if that abomination is a success, TV shows-to-features will replace superhero movies as the next big thing. We'll have a Frasier movie, a How I Met Your Mother movie, a Scrubs movie (probably scored by the Shins if Zach Braff has any say in the matter... and he will). And since these movies will be cheap to make, they'll soon dominate the market, the beancounters at the studios won't be able to resist. It's going to be a fuckin' cinematic fuckpocalyse, I tell you... just in time for 2012. Maybe we'll get lucky, Roland Emmerich will be right, and the world actually will end and put us all out of our misery!

NBC needs to move Heroes to another night

If they still care about making one last attempt to salvage it rather than outright cancelling it, then they need to move it away from House. This new season shows promise so far, but House is KILLING it in the ratings.

surprising to see the comments here

    by meadowe

I usually just visit the movie articles here, so to see the comments on Heroes is surprising; I thought people still loved it but I guess if they do it's a lower # of people. I love Conan, I don't have dvr so it's nice to see him earlier and then watch Craig Ferguson who's actually excited instead of jimmie fellatio who probably sneezes when he sucks lorne michaels' and nbc executive cock just like he laughs before he can tell an unfunny joke. I'm surprised at how leno is fairing, but I truly hope that if he cancelled he doesn't get Tonight back, imo he was the warm up act for Conan back in the day. We've had tough times and haven't had cable/satellite since 11.2006, only recently did we figure out that any rabbit ears with our flatscreens (yeah I know weird combination) will give them reception. So because of that my mom has turned me onto cbs, I love mentalist, big bang theory (nice to see homey from roseanne with another show after so many years) even 2 and 1/2 men which I initially thought was just charlie sheen limping off to another project after taking Michael J Fox's sloppy seconds in Spin City. I even watched csi:miami's premiere yesterday and liked it despite me not liking mr. Kiss of death. Anyway that's my 2 centabos.

I once thought HOUSE was a gimmick where EVERY fucking week some mystery case would come in and Dr. House would be right about what's wrong, while for 45 minutes everyone else would say "Pop another pill, you jerk!" until they realized he was correct. And there's definitely some formula to the proceedings, but HOUSE is great character material- and there's a lot of depth and contradiction to their lead character. They take him down far darker paths than your typical tv show goes. That's why this season's "rebirth" arc is so interesting. Definitely give it a shot, I was a skeptic myself and now I am found.

    My only problem with House...

    by maelstrom_zero

...is the fact that, as others have hilariously mentioned, it's too repetitive. It's so formulaic that for any given episode, I could essentially tell you what happened without even watching.
To it's credit though, House is still pretty entertaining--the actors are pretty good, the dialogue is good, the cases are generally interesting, and House himself is a fascinating character. I just wish that the writers would dispense with formula every so often.

maelstrom_ZERO, as a HOUSE fan I agree with you

    by yackbacker

The formula is very repetitive, but there's a certain comfort in that to a degree. Another formula show that comes to mind is BURN NOTICE- all very by the numbers, and intentionally so. That being said, a little deviation from the formula makes for excellent storytelling. Remember when ST: TNG went crazy and turned Picard into a Borg? Similarly, last season's HOUSE finale and this season's premiere was a very good break from their formula. Things are realigning a bit and excellent character work is coming from it. And as I mentioned BURN NOTICE earlier, they too are going into new territory...

Hiro = Trunks from Dragonball Z

    by turketron_2

Trunks came from the future and was a total badass. Wasted the Big Bad from the previous season in one move (after it had taken the main characters an entire fucking season to defeat him the first time, and he still came back!). He went on to try to stop the menace that would later ravage his future and ended up becoming an even more uber badass, returning to his own time (which was still fucked up because he could only return to his timeline for some reason) and doing away with the threats he had been fighting there.
Meanwhile, the trunks in the new timeline grew up to be an unimaginable pussy. Sounds a bit like Hiro to me.

However, After he went back to his own timeline, Kid Trunks became more powerful then Future Trunks ever was. He went SSJ while he was still a kid. heroes

    by ryanbraun14

heroes used to be the show where i counted the days until a new episode. Its not just that its bad, its that its INSULTING TO THE VIEWER kind of bad. Case in point: early in an episode, Nathan is giving like 40 soldiers who he doesn't personally know powers... then at the end of the episode, he's in a limo and decides all the people with powers need to be rounded up at imprisoned... hmmm, so random soldiers with powers aren't a threat, yet the people who HE SAVED THE WORLD WITH need to be hunted down??? in one episode!??!?!?! That's just insulting. Kring is also insulting to comic books and comic fans which heave a wealth of great stories he could have drawn from, yet because of his douchebag ego he rips of The Fly, the 440- and other shirtty storylines. Also, one of the biggest rules of writing is don't make promises early that you won't keepk. Its a simple concept taught at the freshman or at the very latest sophmore level of an english-creative writing major... heroes breaks that rule soooo many times. First, they set up a season finale that would have an epic fight, but the fight was an afterthought. One of the best moments of season one was seeing how badass hiro would become in the future, yet he only gets incredibly stupid... then they make him even MORE stupid by giving him a childs mind, except hiro was so stupid anyways you can easily forget that he had a 10 year olds mind. There's also ZERO action... it wasn't hard for buffy, angel, supernatural, smallville, even chuck to put in action. They also kill off characters which is making a promise that a death would change things and have reprecussions that would progress the storylines, except people don't stay dead. We all know there's more, but fuck kring for making a show so terrible it might be a long time until we see another superhero show get a shot. Oh yeah, in one of the SHITTY comics they put online, peter had a costume and was a superhero... what happened to that???? Heroes has become so ba it is like they are trying to kill it.

Heroes season 3. 1st half abyssmal 2nd half good ....

    by u.k. star

    ...to great.

It took us an age to watch series 3. We watched the first 3 or 4 episodes then just gave up as it was utter garbage. All that making all of the characters virtually the opposite of who they were before... Crap, shit, shite. But the second half had us hooked again and was realy interesting.

Did a lot of you do what we did, watch the first half and get sick of it, but not watch the whole show? We only went back to it because we'd heard that the "reboot2 or return of Kring or whatever had made the show interesting again.

Ray park asside the 4th series seems to be suffering from being mind meltingly sloooowwww. Not poor like S3, but slow, slow, slow. A show that is in danger of being cancelled HAS to kick on much quicker than this.

    by ghostdad

Is like being a fan of a terrible football team. Every once in a while, they put together a nice drive, they march down the field and get to the goal line and you think "Hey they may score here!" but then they throw an interception in the endzone that the other team runs back for a TD. Nathan as Sylar is unforgiveable.... you have a fucking healer who's blood can and has brought people back from death before, but instead you do a retarded plot twist. Considering how little we've seen of Nathan, it's pointless... the Parkman/Sylar stuff could have been exactly the same without having the retardation that was Sylar as Nathan. I don't understand why they go to these extremes to keep Nathan and Nikki/Tracy around, yet completely ruin Suresh, who was basically the heart of the show in it's best season. I haven't hated the first couple episodes this year, but that INT is coming.

AWESOME analogy. We must be two of the very few sports fans on this site... but based on how alot of these people post, I'd be happy to keep them here as I would not be able to stand their mentality on sports blogs.Your analogy was perfect, but for fun I'll do another--heroes is like an overpaid struggling pitcher who turns out to be a bust--in his last four starts he has an era of 8 but then has an outing where he allows one run over 8 complete, and you think, ok--if he can get on a roll and pitch this way, it might be enough to get us to the postseason. But he doesn't rebound and the team finds themselves 10 back going into september... the team is out of it, so i stop watching every game and the few i decide to watch either a) remind me why this team fell out of the race by playing terribly, or b) the team plays a great game and I think 'where was this two months ago???' Either way, the team is out of it and i find it hard to care about the game, but since I'm a baseball fan (=comics fan) I watch occassional games (episodes of a superhero show) but the team still sucks--i've just come to expect that at that point.

    by big jim

if there are commercials or some sort of advertising. Either way, it's irrelevant to broadcast television and, more importantly, to those that advertise on it. If some company is paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to advertise during Heroes, all they care about is how many people are watching it at that time. If 9 out of 10 people watch it on Hulu instead it doesn't help the advertiser at all. And if they aren't getting eyeballs on their ads, they aren't going to pay (or pay the big bucks networks love so much) to advertise. As a result, the networks will look elsewhere for something to attract viewers and advertising dollars.

    Big Bang Theory

    by boopybeepy

I saw big bang theory once for about 15 minutes. One of the "guy" characters really liked this girl but she was way too busy to go on a date because she was a doctor with a kid. So to get her to go out with him he setup a two minute date in front of her office. He had a dinner setup, a movie, and some other stuff setup. But of course because it was a two minute date they could only do those activities for about 30 seconds each. Oh boy ,it was cute, quirky, fun, and of course hilarious and off the wall. Imagine a 2 minute date? I haven't seen it since.

    Heroes - Fall / Chuck - Spring

    by dookiemercury

You do realize that this year because of the Leno show. Heroes will only be shown until New Years after that when shows come back for the second half it'll be replaced by Chuck and some other new show. This pretty much put's the nail in the coffin for Heroes anyway because once it's shown it wont be shown again, unless you have iTunes or Hulu. Trauma I assume was already planned for one season (or technically half) so if either of these shows fail this fall they will already be replaced for next year.

BoopyBeepy, I believe what you saw was

    by big jim

"How I Met Your Mother". Probably a good thing you didn't make a point to watch it again. You'd spend every episode tuned into "The Big Bang Theory" waiting to find out what happened to the guy and girl who'd been on the 2 minute date.p.s. The girl was Sarah Chalke, once on Roseanne, now on Scrubs for the past 7 years, in case you were curious.

Very late replying to this post, but going to anyway...
I thought the FU was more the way they killed Trip. Having Riker and Troi watching it, not so much. Sure, it seemed wrong to have the end not feature the characters from the show, but at the same time, I think they were going for an "even hundreds of years later, this crew will be remembered" type of thing. Just handled it poorly.

    HERPES

    by repo_man

They don't even show it in the UK anymore. The BBC dropped it after struggling to sound enthusiastic about it every week last year.
With regard to ratings, I haven't watched a single show on TV for five years. I don't even own a TV. Anything I watch is either streamed or downloaded, and I doubt I'm the only one. I tried watching the new episodes of Heroes on youtube but they're all backwards with the last ten minutes missing. If they're like that on the TV no wonder nobody bothers.

    Don't know about anyone else.

    by skydemon

But if most others are like me, they're too busy to sit down and watch much TV at all. My DVR is packed, and I still don't have time. So it's really got to be worth watching before I can devote the time.

    No shit-who has time??

    by spiceybiscuit

I agree with skydemon-I either DVR or Hulu and watch them when I can...everyone fucking works 10 hours a day and has to take care of family-ratings are bullshit...reason they have them is to charge for comercials so they can sell us more shit we don't need. Fuck NBC-nothing shocks me about this stupid Cock network...Jay leno will burn in a firey flame of failure and go back to 11:30

and I hope it has another 12 seasons!! It's awesome, and I can't believe people complain about it so much. This season rocks.

I've watched every HEROES ep and I'll keep watching

    by snapt

but it's SO BORING this season. If Hiro and Ando aren't on screen I can barely keep my eyes open. Why does each scene stretch on so long?! HEROES could literally be a 15-minute show. It SHOULD be a 15-minute show. That's about how long it takes to read a comic book.
