I saw commericials for Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters the other day and was shocked to find out they were still on the air. Sort of like I'm shocked that they still make new Simpsons.

Herc, I'm getting REAL SICK of these "ratings" stories

    by d.vader

Don't get me wrong, I like you Herc, you're a good guy, but these stories are UNNEEDED. If anything, you're only helping to perpetuate this terrible idea among today's TV execs that if something has lower ratings than another show, then its a failure. You're helping spread the idea that "Oh shit! This show's ratings are low! Time to cancel!" Its that kind of bullshit thinking, and the refusal to allow a show to grow or to have bad periods, that got Arrested Development and Veronica Mars and Firefly and Undeclared cancelled. Had that mentality prevailed in the past, then shows like Seinfeld would never have lasted more than one season. So please, as a fan of TV, I beg you to drop these stories on ratings. I don't want to hear it, and I don't want execs reading this site to see it and think it means "failure".

    Ratings/Quality

    by supertoyslast

Herc, I think D.Vader's point was that buzz and fan appreciation may have a role in extending a show's life. So, in terms of encouraging quality TV, it may be more positive to have stories saying "this show is really good and deserves to stay on the air" than "these shows are failing because of poor ratings".I'm not saying that I entirely agree because network execs are ratings-obsessed enough as it is without AICN's input and I, too, like to know how well certain shows are doing in the ratings. But it is dispiriting to note that success is now judged almost solely in terms of ratings, box-office takings and sales. Instead of... oh, I don't know... quality?

    by tall_boy66

That's really the only think I was excited for Family Guy this year (like the show quite a bit, even though it's wildly uneven and can get tedious). It's Empire Strikes Back parody "Something Something Something Dark Side" was SUPPOSED to be the season premiere, but the DVD is coming out at X-Mas and it's not airing on TV until May as the season finale. Way to screw job me personally, Fox. As for my TV last night, I watched Entourage and Curb. Gonna get my illegal download on for FG and Simpsons (and, what the hell, I'll watch the pilot episode for Cleveland Show and probably never watch it again)

Fox wants your green. They saw how enormously successful Blue Harvest was, and they know that if buying the SSDS ep on DVD is the only way people will be able to see it, they'll make a mint. Why give it to us for free when they could sell every viewing? That's good marketing. Also, FUCK YOU FOX, YOU GREED-CUNTS. We would have bought it anyway, just like Blue Harvest.

    by lenny nero

And on the flipside of the complaints, Herc letting you know that one of your favorite shows is getting middling ratings could potentially get one moving in spreading the word about said favorite show, which would of course affect DVR and online viewings (which don't count in a Nielsen sense but are stilled weighed by the networks).

Besides, I really want the Jay Leno Show to fail, and I've been having a good time tracking its demise.

And of course it was written by guest writers. There were some seriously good one liners and the plot actually had a structure to it. Plus, Seth Rogen does some decent voice acting. I think like a lot of people he and Evan Goldberg grew up with this show at its peak so they respect the sense of humor more. Even stuff in the background was funny (Poster: Alvin and Chipmunks, Alvin gets rabies.)

These things cost money, and it is expected they will bring back a profit. To them, quality means little if they are not showing a profit.

Also, to those illegally downloading these shows, remember, you are costing people jobs. Networks need advertisers to pay for these shows. If people are downloading, and not watching those ads, the networks lose out, and then the actors, writers, producers, directors, and other crew lose their jobs.

Last night's American Dad is a good example of why

    by big jim

I prefer it over Family Guy. Family Guy will make a reference to something that will have little to no relation to the episode's plot, it will simply be a sight-gag. Perhaps they might have a character making reference to, for example, the Vietnam war, then show a short take-off of Apocalypse Now, Platoon, or First Blood. American Dad, as they did last night, does the same thing but integrates it into the plot. I was laughing throughout the stuff with Steve on the golf course (the B-story with Roger was, at best, mildly amusing). That said (as Harry says), I did really enjoy last night's Family Guy, probably because all the "asides" were actually part of the plot. The Disney world was very well done and I'm glad they did it in this episode and didn't just randomly insert it into some episode with Peter saying "Say Brian, I had a dream last night we lived in a world drawn by Walt Disney".

The people who like Family Guy are the same people who thought Transformers 2 and Wolverine were good movies and that Nickleback and Creed are good bands. Had no idea Rogen wrote it aswell as appeared vocally. It wasn't great. I'll always love The Simpsons though.

Transformers 2 and Wolverine were both bad movies...AND I like Family Guy....so how do you classify me you fucking ass clown? Creed & Nickelback....doesn't matter if I like them or not, what the fuck does that have to do with my taste in TV and movies, are we to believe that YOU set the standards as to who likes what and why? Here's an idea...go fuck yourself.

..and get laid. Pay for it if you have to. Empty your nuts and chill the fuck out, people, seriously. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean those who do are retarded. Okay so "The Cleveland Show" wasn't great but is that any reason to start ripping into people? No. Now, before I give my own opinion of the other three shows let me say that I'm almost 35, married, hated "Transformers" & "Wolverine", I've never heard "Creed" and I absolutely LOATHE "Nickelback" (but at least I can spell it). So... "The Simpsons" was okay, had a couple of funny moments, "American Dad" was pretty good but "Family Guy" was in my opinion one of the best episodes in ages, and bugger all like the "Time & Punishment" episode of "The Simpsons".

    Nielsen Diary Story

    by kdog629

When I was a kid, my family was selected to fill out a Nielsen diary for a week. One Saturday night, I pre-filled the diary out with what I thought we'd be watching, and I filled in 9pm with The Golden Girls (NBC). What we actually watched was A Man Called Hawk (ABC), which was cancelled in less than a season. I always felt I should find Avery Brooks and apologize.

Wow...that was cathartic. Like a call to 888-OOPS-JEW.

    by cherryvalance

Think about it. What if it's all just a conspiracy to keep Americans stupid. You give the worst shows the best ratings convincing the network to keep those and the worst ratings to the smart shows so the networks will get rid of them. So people have to watch crap. And then everyone stays stupid and keeps buying barbecue equipment.

    by kaiser soze

While I agree with whoever said your ratings stories could help spur people to get the word out on their favorite, albeit weaker shows. However, the ratings stories really are pointless filler on this site (or in general, for that matter). Here's why: Last night's television viewing options also included Mad Men, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dexter, and Californication, each of which is 10 times better than any of the shows that were on the ratings list. When ratings don't count the better-written, better-acted shows that are now consistantly on the air, the ratings really count. Desperate Housewives has been on a steep decline (although Dana Delaney is still cute as a button), Simpsons, while historically excellent, has not been even decent in years (kind of like Saturday Night Live). And the Seth Macfarlane trilogy of shows is humor written for the LCD (Lowest Common Denominator) demographic that includes drunken fratboys and retarded teens (basically all of them). It is absolutely awful humor that stems from the basest, most crass, and easiest humor to write, while never really having much of a plot beyond continuous pop culture references. Whereas Curb Your Enthusiasm found humor in trying to open the modern theft-resistant packaging, and had me in tears with the running car-BJ gags, or as Ron White calls them, mouth-hugs. But the point is Herc, when the best shows on television are not included in the ratings, then the ratings are horribly flawed and posting stories about them is a waste of both time and space.

The Only Reason for these Ratings Stories

    Neilsen Families Do Exist

    by mrstinger

We were one. Not in the national ratings, but in the local ratings for New Orleans. They dropped us after Hurricane Katrina when they had to recalibrate their deomgraphics and randomly select new families. One interesting note: they have no way to meter TiVo. The problem is that TiVo records things the user may not be interested in seeing ("recommendations") and that may not reflect their families' actual viewing habits. I know my TiVo's recommendations (I waited until we were no longer a Nielsen family to get one) don't reflect my tastes. Hulu must be driving Nielsen crazy.

    Emmys in 10 years time

    by miyamoto_musashi

Given the quality of shows on cable tv, given how people will be accessing cable more and more I could conceivable see a time, when all Emmy nominated drama/comedy shows are on cable tv
For best Drama this year House and Lost were the only two from Network TV, IMHO House should definetely be out and The Shield in. As much as I Love Lost, In Treatment had better acting and direction and should have been in instead of Lost. So there Drama already covered.
For Comedy, 30 Rock and the Office (at times) are the only ones that are really competing. Though I think Californication should be in there, Curb will be next year and never going to happen but should be there is Venture Bros.
As I said I love Lost, but for me the only network tv show of recent times that has really competed with cable in terms of acting, direction etc is The West Wing. Nothing since.

    CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM

    by thegreatwhatzit

is classic TV (the dialogue is actually improvised?). The ROBOT CHICKEN parody of STAR WARS was lame (Geo Lucas participated, hence the ass-kissing; timid burlesque in lieu of satire). Loved THE SIMPSONS (wickedly skewering Clinton when he was in office) but it eroded into a cash cow. Prefer AMERICAN DAD over FAMILY GUY but, exempting CURB, TV is akin to watching bowling.

"Road to the Multiverse" was one of the best Family Guy episodes in ages - Disney-guy, Hot Meg, the Flintstones segment, Brian being liked by the human chick on a leash, and a lot of other moments were spot on. The Simpsons was good, not great, but the past few seasons have been something of a return to form. The Cleveland Show, on the other hand, had about two laughs, period.
