Capone Has A Gander At 2009’s First DEXTER – Now With Exciting John Lithgow Nudity!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!
My man Capone has graciously agreed to pinch-hit for me during this busy premiere season by reviewing the first handful of “Dexter” episodes:
Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago. Well, I've seen the first four episodes of Season 4 of everybody's favorite Showtime serial killer series "Dexter," and I'm happy to report that the show continues to impress me, especially now that we have another bone fide nut job for Dexter and crew to hunt down. This season, we are introduced to a character known as the Trinity Killer. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Allow me to remind you where we left off and where we jump into Dex's married-with-children lifestyle.
What's the title of "Dexter" 401?
"Living the Dream"
Who directed?
Marcos Siega, who has helmed seven previous "Dexter" episodes, plus the very good upcoming episode 403. He's also directed select episodes of "The Vampire Diaries," "Tru Blood," "Cold Case," and "Veronica Mars."
Who wrote it?
Series executive producer Clyde Phillips, who has penned three previous "Dexter" episodes.
Where do we pick things up?
The newly married Dexter and Rita have moved to the suburbs, with Rita's two children Astor and Cody, as well as new baby Harrison (presumably named after Dexter's spectral father Harry). Dex's sister Deb is still seeing her former C.I./jazz musician boyfriend Anton. All else in the detectives' squad room appears to be maintaining the status quo.
How does the episode open?
Dexter doing what he does best: driving around late at night with a very important mission. All of this late night driving is apparently sleep depriving our anti-hero, so much so that he screws up on the stand the next morning and gets a killer freed. But we know Dexter can make up for his mistake, right?
Do we actually see the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow) do anything exciting this week?
Fuck yes we do, and elements of what he does are so shocking, they are burned into my brain forever. We also find out that he kills in threes, and that the FBI has tracked his activities back 15 years making him the most successful serial killer to never be caught. But Dexter makes a discovery that may trace Trinity's killing back 30 years.
Any other cases for the detectives to fret over?
All of the episodes are blurring together for me, but I believe there is mention of a tourist being killed in this episode. If not in this episode, definitely in the next.
Is the status quo of the squad room really being maintained?
There's a surprising secret relationship that has sprung up between two characters.
Any other surprises this week?
I was completely unaware that a major character from Season 2 was back this season to really screw with Deb's life. I won't say who just yet in case Showtime is attempting to keep this under wraps, but next week I'm spilling the beans.
Any other special guests?
As a matter of fact, yes. Deb is still trying to find Harry's old C.I. that he may or may not have slept with. She doesn't realize it yet, but she's attempting to find Dexter's mother. She goes to interview another C.I. (played by the still-lovely Adrienne Barbeau), hoping this is the woman she's looking for.
Is that smoking hot Internal Affairs lady still stalking Quinn?
She's nowhere to be found, but that doesn't stop Quinn from flirting with another gorgeous woman, a newspaper reporter played by Courtney Ford.
Does Dexter confess his crimes to anyone this season like he wort of did with Jimmy Smits last season?
Yes he does. He tells someone close to him that he kills people, and he's not saying it as a joke.
What I liked.
The Trinity killing near the beginning goes beyond anything we've seen on the show in terms of brutality and shock value, for many reasons--nudity being one of them. The return of the Season 2 character is so welcome that words escape me…until next week.
What I didn't like.
Dexter's narrative observations about the sickening suburban lifestyle feel stale and never really goes anywhere in the first four episodes, even when it tries to. Gee, making fun of the 'burbs; very original. The jury is still out on the introduction of the reporter character. I can already see where that storyline is going--the same place every affair between a cop and a reporter goes. But I'll reserve judgement because Courtney Ford is a cutie. Everything else is solid.
How does it end?
Deb and the mystery returnee are finally reunited.

Herc here with my wish list for season four:
* More voice-overs generally (don't you wish every show had them every week? Wouldn't it be cool to always be able to hear what was going on in Don Draper or Michael Scott's heads?), but especially more voice-overs with Dexter thinking about how inhuman he is because he always wants to kill.
* More scenes in which Dexter’s dead dad explains The Code by which Dexter must live.
* More close calls where Dexter seems about to get caught.
* More scenes with murder-related double-entendres:
DETECTIVE: Man, that was one boring briefing.
DEXTER: Deadly.
That sort of thing!
Here’s hoping!
The Chicago Tribune says:
… “Dexter” has grown tiresome. In Season 4, Dexter’s life as a suburban dad feels claustrophobic, and the show has become repetitive and predictable. Despite Hall’s undeniable talent and a brilliant performance by John Lithgow as the “Trinity Killer,” this is one journey that feels as though it has dragged on too long. …
The San Francisco Chronicle says:
… As usual, the series kicks off with creeps and thrills - and humor. Lithgow is amazing, promising to upstage the Jimmy Smits cameo of Season 3. …
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says:
… The tension of "Will Dexter Get Caught?" created a rich atmosphere that helped make Dexter sympathetic despite his status as TV's blood-spattered anti-hero. But when writers went to that same well in seasons two and three, the plot repetition made it seem impossible for the series to regain the grandeur of season one. That's probably still true, but through the first four episodes of the fourth season, it's clear the writers have learned to move beyond the Dexter-in-jeopardy rut. …
The Boston Globe says:
… Thankfully, this season “Dexter’’ continues to play with our moral bearings, which is the show’s best quality. “Dexter’’ is definitely a well-made crime thriller that will keep you riveted even when, as happened last season, the pacing is off. …
Variety says:
… returns for its fourth season slowed a bit by the title character’s domestic bliss, as well as an uneven emphasis on his work colleagues’ social lives. Nevertheless, Michael C. Hall’s performance remains one of the juiciest on television …
9 p.m. Sunday. Showtime.

definitely glad Dex is back... now that True Blood's wrapped up, this is essentially the only show left on tv for me watch.
-
...play the Trinity Killer in that pretentious and over-the-top way that only he can make look good?
-
You forgot about the traffic accident. Unless that was only in the leaked copy.
-
Throws a nice wrench into Deb relationship with Anton and also ups the pressure on Dexter and on finding Lithgow. Not much of a surprise really.
-
Forgot about the accident. I was thinking the episode was fairly blah until then.
-
Yes. He sucks.
-
Showtime has made no secret Carradine's back. Between Carradine back and Lithgow on the docket there's no reason NOT to watch....it should be a great season....I missed Lundy. --G
-
like last year's Skinner story. That was a real disappointment how they didn't connect the stories until the last episode and then only for about 5 minutes.
-
...of a letdown, saved by Smits' fantastic performance. Still better than most of what was on, but here's hoping this season amps things up a little.
-
I had the slightest of doubts about Season 3, but my wife and I wound up enjoying the hell out of it. It looked like Jimmy Smits must've had a blast throughout the whole season.
Can't wait to see Lithgow at work. -
Anyone else think that the coax reviews NOT written by Herc are miles better than anything Herc writes himself?
-
season 3 was a B-. Not sure about season 4 yet, suspect marrying the character off will become the jump the shark moment though.
-
The Complete and Only Season.
-
Compalints that it's not fresh after three successful seasons are lame.
-
too bad I don't have showtime :(
-
and the damn "CODE" flashbacks.
We know he has a code. That's why he can be a serial killer that we root for! Thanks for reminding us for 3 season's.
Give it a rest now. -
I didn't buy the whole story with Jimmy Smits. Good performance, but weak plot.
Season 2 was the best, but they played all the best cards. Plus, the chick Dexter was banging was hot. To bad he killed her. -
Boring character, bland actor. Deb deserves better.
-
Jennifer Carpenter is one tight-bodied babe. And all that cursing...most girls can't pull it off and still be flaming hot, but it just makes her fucking hotter. Pay her more so she'll show some skin. Nobody wants to see John lithgow naked...I mean come on!
-
her cuntyness was a real turn off.
-
I gotta brush up on this show...
-
For whatever reason the show just isn't as good as the first season. It's still really great, but it doesn't blow me away quite like season 1 did.
Hopefully the addition of another serial killer for Dexter to spar with this season they can finally get back to what made the show so great... -
... but I'm in the UK... so I am going to have to wait forever!!!
-
There are so many things wrong with that sentence. I can't count them. ...and I wouldn't want to.
-
that's why he isn't writing this. He's not too busy. He'd rather wtite about complete shit like the Amazing Race and other shit than a quality show like Dexter.
-
I think I'd have to re-watch Season One to really give a completely intelligent list, but I do remember it being the strongest of the three seasons, even though Season 2 was also might awesome. They really pulled all the stops out, I couldn't even really picture what the next season would be like after Season Two. They sort of blew their load with having the cops chasing Dex with him working in the Department. It's too perfect. Season Three had the weakest story, but Smits was awesome, IMO. The first half was better than the last half. When Dex actually had a friend he thought was true, that knew about him...best the show has been, possibly. The two of them were so excellent together. Now we'll see how Lithgow and Hall go at it, should be interesting. As for why season one is the best, that's what I can't exactly remember. I remember the overarching story, with the ice cream truck and his brother, and him dating Deb, etc and I remember totally loving it, but I'm fuzzy on the details.
-
LILA.
-
I was a big fan originally, because I LOVE Julie Benz, but Dexter married and falling asleep at the wheel, and fucking up his kills... That's retarded. It's on the border of sit-com territory.
I wasn't a huge fan of the Season 3 storyline either. I'm hoping this year is a return to form, but based on the first leaked episode, I have my doubts. -
...that is extremely difficult to successfully maintain. The last part of the third season definitely tipped on this, submerging Dexter the monster completely. Still one of the increasingly small handful of shows I look forward to.
-
...this is my primary fear, too. Some of the teaser material looks as though the show may be straying into self parody. Hope it's just the promos and will still be in front of the set tonight hoping for the best.
-
Rita being murdered by another serial killer? Hell yeah. (even though I love Julia Benz)
-
Season 4 will be the best ever if the Trinity Killer kills Rita, the most annoying character in the history of TV.
-
of john lithgow naked is disturbing
-
that would definitely put the show back in Season 1 territory. That would be damn intense. The only drawback I could see, however, would be her kids. Since they can't really drop them I feel like it would only create more domestic drama as Dexter has to decide what to do with them ("next season, he's a single father, and he wants revenge..").
-
the novels already have Cody being a budding young psychopath, so his mom getting brutally murdered could help facilitate that. I can't see a tv show being able to protray a murdering child though.
-
Did you really think it was Dexter's sleep deprivation that caused the court screw up? I may need to watch it again, because I got the feeling he did it on purpose so he could play with the guy later. I did think it was kinda risky to put his court rep on the line by throwing it, but I still got the feeling he took a dive on it to exact some real justice later.
-
without it, his accident later would just be too out of left field.
-
but I'm pretty sure he messed up in court on purpose so he could kill him.
-
I'm sure Lithgow will be awesome, he always is, and Smits deserved an Emmy for his role last year. But they've gotta do something new, and no, "Dex moves to the burbs" does not count as new.
Also, I don't understand the Rita hate. She's barely in the show anyway, and she's hot and has one of those husky girl voices. -

Personally, I've enjoyed the the HELL out of all 3 seasons of Dexter. People keep belly aching about why the first season was the best, and it's my favorite as well, and they don't know what seperates it from the other two. Well here's the reason...ITS BASED ON THE BOOK DARKLY DREAMING DEXTER!!! The other two seasons, 2 and 3, are not based on the books AT ALL. If you like Dexter check out the books as well...they are on a totally different story line than the series.
-
...but do you think the books are on a better one? With the half-hearted supernatural hoo-ha and the secret society falderal? And yes, I used hoo-ha and falderal in the same post. Not even wearing a bow-tie.
-
...Falderal, on the other hand, I had to look up though. And I am wearing a bow tie.
-
skip straight to the 4th book, it's back to form, dropping the super natural rubbish.
-
How is he gonna explain that?
-
Glad to see Lithgow back to form and not selling soup. I would watch that guy do dishes...even if he is more naked.
-
it's entertaining. But it's also dragging on too.
-
What he did to that woman was really disturbing.
-
Lithgow does an incredible creepy job,,, can't wait to see whats next
-
Doesn't sound like many people are happy to see Dexter change at all, to see how he deals with a double life that now involves a hot wife and kids.
For me Dexter is in my top 5 (currently being broadcast) and whilst I wait for Lost and True Blood is over, the only thing that I can't wait to see the next episode. -
balderdash?
-
im on the second book right now and my wife is reading the third. she doesnt really like it...i'll still give it a read though. i personally wish the first season was more like the book. no realtionship with deb and his brother and laguerta bites it.
-
Or maybe not.
-
seriously? nobody's going to comment on that?
"bona fide"i don't have any clue what bone fide is capone -
Homophobes.
-
... where's the "Cleveland Show was another laughless turd from what could only charitably be called the Seth MacFarlane 'creative' team" thread?
-
I watched this after the new Mad Men and Dexter just blows MM out of the water. Glad to see Carradine return and I have no doubts in Lithgow.
-
p.s.: what does "like he wort of did with Jimmy Smits" thought. ("sort" perharps?). (And is Aquatarkusman not seeing the other article on the Family Guy's spin off?)
-
cool if he ices Rita and the kids.
-
Rita and the kids is 4, lol... BRING ON SAME OLD SAME OLD... that's what a "series" is for otherwise I'd stick to movies
-
With no possible way out except some terribly contrived events. If you place this in any form of reality, even the dumbest fuck on the planet would catch him now. Decent premiere, but whoever said this blows Mad Men away is nutjob.
-
I think that'd be too much. Plus it's easier to change baby in future episodes
-
It's not Julie Benz's fault, the damn writers are going to make her and the kids a constant annoying thorn in Dexter's side.
If I find out she doesn't have a job but she's forcing Dexter to be up with the baby at night then I'm going to kill her myself.
And before you go apeshit ladies, I was a stay at home Dad with our daughter all 3 months of sleepless time, and I let my wife sleep all night EVERY night. -
Just say'n
-
Does this mean we get to see John Bigboote?
-
Also, Dexter's voiceover helps because he has practically zero emotion and spends most of his time alone. Wouldn't it be fun to watch a guy stare blankly at every situation season after season? No, it wouldn't.
This new season seems promising. John Lithgow is fantastically weird and the idea of Dexter maturing into a more dangerous serial killer is exciting considering that he spends a bulk of his time on the defensive.
I don't know how much more of Dexter there can be, though. The Dexter in prison season could be entertaining. -
Just awful, unwatchable. I hope he gets killed off ASAP, and I hope that when he goes to bed at night, he at least has the decency to be embarrassed at what a piece of shit actor he is.
-
I let my rage at that shitty actor take over for a moment, and it made me forget Lithgow. I'm tingling over the potential he has this season. The rew scenes he had this episode were boss.
-
No matter what side of the political spectrum you're on, she's just... awful. As human beings go, I wish she would.
-
so.....Trinity Killer shocking? nope.....big returning guest a surprise? nope, been in all the adds for the new season....the end with car? that was a bit of a surprise if only because they did it-WHEN YOU COULD SEE IT COMING FROM A MILE AWAY!!!!!!
what a let down, none the less i am glad DEXTER is back, at least now Sunday has something worth watching..hope it get better next week.... -
Can't resist Lithgow. In any performance he's a joy to watch.
-
...I'm completely with you on the relationship between Deb and Dexter's brother. Would have agreed with you about the other too, but Laguerte's character got more interesting and rounded in season three.
-
But I'm encouraged that it -- and in its own way, the show -- back away from that ridiculous, shall we say, "outside influence" that was mentioned in the third book. That was a cop-out, and weak, lazy, writing to me.
Book 3 could have killed the whole series for me if they'd left it at that. Glad to see it was apparently corrected. -
The part where a shabby Dexter tries to go through the title seuqence "business as usual" and epically fails had me in stitches. It was especially fun with the music warping and slowing down to match the atmosphere. Angel and Laguerta = BARF
-
When did Rita go from being terrified-of-being-touched domestic abuse victim, to being some sexual dynamo?
-
Naked kung-fu grip, that is.
Ew. -
Maybe the worst written character on tv right now. What the fuck is she doing with all her time? Why does Dexter put up with her ridiculous demands? "The baby is in a lot of pain and needs the medicine NOW!" It's a fucking baby, it can't tell you its in pain, nor can it need something immediately. That was sooo forced to get Dexter to hurry. Also, "all that matters is his father is here for him" or whatever, worst line I've heard in a long time. I hope she gets whacked.
-
was a bit crap. It felt toned down and not much happened from episode to episode. Saw the leaked episode and it seems a lot better. They have certainly upped the ante in the horror department anyway. Nice cliffhanger too.
-
...though I agree with you that Rita for the most part functions as a plot driver rather than a character you have just made it absolutely clear that you have never been a parent.
-
it'll be boring. Part of what made the first season great was the mystery of who the ice truck killer was. But I guess there will be tension as Dex tries to hide his identity from Lundy as they team up to find Lithgow.
-
Wasn't caused by driving at night. It was caused by waking up to take care of the baby, something very believable to those who have actually had kids. And I love his struggles with his family: Dexter has the same struggles we all have: to integrate his inner life and needs with his external actions. Brilliant stuff, not always perfect, but no show ever is.
-
Who gives a fuck what they think Dexter is the best thing on the box at the moment fuck the haters
-
"It's a fucking baby, it can't tell you its in pain, nor can it need something immediately."
You must not have any kids :^)
Excellent start - Lithgow in just a few shots is outstanding (and the slightly spoilerish previews look like he's going to some crazy/fun/insane places with the character), I totally dig on the evolution of the character. Any speculation about time between the S3 finale and the S4 kickoff? I ask because Rita does seem to have transitioned pretty goddam quickly.
Also, neither of use picked this up, but Dexter kept his old digs, and I'm assuming Rita doesn't know, but what kind of financial burden is that? I figure she's pretty dialed in to everything and that apartment can't be cheap.
Deb's response to Lindy showing up was amazing, hahaha, whoever said she's one of the few women that makes swearing sexy was dead on. -
Careful with that nuditity!
-
Not dead.Should the show end with Dexter getting caught, getting away with it, or just quitting?
-
and if i never see lithgow ass again, it will be too soon. love his addition to the cast though. it can turn the freak dial up pretty high so i hope they give him free reign to do so..... and i agree with the above people who said rita should be killed. she really does suck.
-
That man is terrible underrated. He cna do anything. He can play anything. Have him play a timid loner, a comic fool or a deadly killer,,and he can play all of them with utter conviction. This guy can play anything. He truly is one of my favorite actors. This guy is a treasure for american acting profession. Dude should be more honoured.
-
I have found Rita to be a very anoying character since the first episod eof season one. And while at first i understood her porpose for the stor,y sinc ethe end of season one she is nothing but an anoyance, and no amount at glamourazing up the actress and make her play with a deeper voice then she did in the first season (to try to make her lok like she is now of a stronger personality) is doing any help. She is anotying like shit.I really hope the serie sdevelopes to Rita cheatting on Dexter with the neighbour next door and thus make her into a complete bitch, instead of just an anoying complaining bitch, and then she gets killed by john Lithgow, preferably with lots of violence and hurt. And then Dexter kills the brats and he's off to be a free man for the first time in his life.
-
...end up killing Dexter's wife and baby, and then Dexter slaughters him but gets caught doing it, is arrested as a distraught husband exacting revenge and the whole thing goes to trial but Dexter's other murders aren't discovered at all?
-
It really seemed to me to be fatigue that caused Dexter to screw up in court. He said (in voiceover) that Quinn provided him with a new subject when he gave him the murder files. I love Deb coming to Dexter defense after Quinn was going off on him. Deb's reaction to Lundy was my favorite moment. ijs
-
Because of the damn kids. On any other show you could kill Rita and be done with it, but not with those kids. Dexter can't handle being a single dad of three, it would never work and it would ruin the show. If Rita did die, I think the entire audience would be disgusted at any way the writers to get rid of the kids. You certainly can't kill them off, not even on a show like Dexter. You can't murder kids on television. He also couldn't exactly put them in foster care or something. It's unfortunate, but we are stuck with Rita for a long, long time. Until the show ends, really. There is just no other way around it.
-
I had always hoped the Rita storyline would have a conclusion, but the pregnancy ruined that. Dexter shouldn't become more capable of maintaining a relationship over time. He should be less. The baby humor is going to get old real quick.
I think this would have been a much stronger show had it been about Dexter slipping away from his code and becoming a true, evil serial killer. And the final two seasons should be about hunting him down.
Although Lithgow has really upped the excitement factor for me this season. I was never excited about Jimmy Smits, but when I first heard Lithgow, I knew he was going to knock it out of the part. But if he only kills three at a time, I don't see how they're going to use him effectively. And I want to see interaction between he and Dexter before Dexter figures out who he is. -
sorry but i have got to disagree..Rita(the kids and Deb) and the CODE make the show...it would be all too easy to turn this into another slasher parody or to have Dexter become a BAD guy, but these ties to the " normal world" give Dexter balance and help to show that in the end he is a GOOD guy that just happens to take out the trash for society .....
-
The code was about keeping him from getting caught. Hell, Dexter was even weighing the possibility of killing his own sister before he finally turned on Rudy (who he very much wanted to be). But by the end of the second season, he realized the code was BS. He chose to continue following it, but it would have been more interesting if he used that as an excuse to play with the code to rationalize what he really wants to do.
I like Dexter but that's the problem. They've humanized him too much already. He's not suppose to be a good guy. He's a serial killer and that's a degenerative disease. They've lost the moral ambiguity of the first season. His normal side isn't what draws people to the show, so why are they drifting it in that direction? I want a little more darkness and a little less comedy. We have enough family sitcoms out there. The only show that was ever like this was Profit. And quite frankly, I'm thinking Jim Profit would destroy Dexter in a heartbeat. -
seriously...Dexter is killing people who deserve what they get how is that not being a good guy? yes he is a serial killer, but he is a serial killer who kills the "right" people...in season two when he had visions of how people would react if they knew the truth one of them was of people cheering and calling him a hero..personally I think that would be most peoples reaction- people like it when those who deserve it ,get it. after all who was upset when Dalmer was shived in prison?
-
They've always made the point that he wasn't killing out of a desire to take out the trash. He kills because he likes to kill. Harry tried to steer him in a safe direction and focus his impulses on bad people, but that's a fiction, as Rudy pointed out. And if this were real life, it would just be a matter of time before he crossed the line, as Doakes pointed out. Dexters' actions may have resulted in good, but it comes from a place of evil. His dark passenger. That's kind of the whole point of the show and it disturbs me when people don't see that. Dexter spells it out in his internal narration, now they just need to get there plot-wise. But they'll probably go the with the safe, Hollywood happy ending. The show's too big a hit now to have any of that pesky darkness lingering around.

Dexter about to be caught tension is not want we need more of - as The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said, they need to move on from that device, if only for the majority of this season.Same goes for the 'Burbs' voice over; it may not seems as compelling as the usual 'dark passenger' stuff, but it needs to be different. In the big picture of the whole show this is a necessary movement in Dexter's arc that compliments the 'dark passenger' stuff. You just need to step back a little.Ultimately the bless will need to end tragically to push the character into refreshed dark passenger arc. But we'll see - Now that BSG is dead, Dexter is by far the best thing on tv.
