UPDATED!! ABC Extends V Hiatus!!

Published at:  Sep 27, 2009 10:47:03 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

UPDATE! The Hollywood Reporter has word that production of a fifth episode of "V" will not commence until AFTER the first four hours air in November and ABC can see how they do in the ratings.

Original post:

Entertainment Weekly reports that the production hiatus on “V” has been extended from two weeks to six weeks.

ABC will air four hours of the sci-fi drama in November. Any additional episodes won't begin airing until March.

The EW story doesn’t mention whether more than four episodes have been shot at this point. With only four in the can, I can imagine ABC forgetting about airing more in March if the ratings aren’t that great.

“V” debuts Nov. 3. Its Tuesday 8 p.m. competition during sweeps will include “NCIS,” “The Biggest Loser,” “90210” and “So You Think You Can Dance?”

    by bobbyjoe

It's toast. Too bad; I was looking forward to it, but that schedule looks like something's seriously screwed up. And even if the show turns out to be brilliant, I don't see how it can gain any ground starting up, stopping quickly, and then trying to start up again so late in the season. Oh well, maybe we'll get more Juliet back on 'Lost.'

    The Other Theory...

    by bobbyjoe

...is that ABC liked the ratings for Flashforward and maybe even Eastwick, and decided they've only got room for a certain number of SF or Fantasy shows on their schedule, so they're shoving V off into limbo. The timing of this announcement could possibly fit with that scenario.

    Could backfire

    by renonevada2000

If those first episodes that air in November prove extremely popular, ABC is stuck not being able to capitalize on that until the spring, risking losing all the momentum they had before Thanksgiving. Remember how a lot of new shows had problems getting their audiences back for their second seasons after being interrupted by the writers strike? While the gap won't be as long, the potential is still there.

Sounds like ABC is telling us "Why bother?"

    by starhawke

With this shit now added to all the delays in production, the "retooling" of the pilot and shifts of production/creative personnel, it doesn't bode well for ABC bothering with the series past what's in the can. So I'm wondering why I should bother to watch. They've already shown they're not going to stand behind excellent, creative shows (no, I mean Dirty Sexy Money and Defying Gravity!), so even if this revision of V is worth a damn, it's meat anyway. That being the case, why then should I even give it minute one of my valuable time if it's GNDN before it even hits the air? Any answers, you ABC pinheads looking in? Any of you have the balls to respond?

    Always Being Cancelled...

    by v'shael

Geez ABC, why do you even bother? Acts like this just tell the audience that its going to be cancelled. So they won't watch. And it will be cancelled. The ultimate self-fulfilling prophecy.

Your network is run by the dumbest fucks in America.

Were they following to close to the original story that they had to start over and take it in a new direction? Or were there just too many beautiful but BLAND actors in this show? Hard to care about them, or fear them, when they all look like catalog models.

They're Changing Their Gameplan to Make It Longer

    by crow3711

Which will inevitably ruin whatever awesomeness they had planned. All this time off and re-planning I guarantee they are doing in order to extend it past one season is going to make this suck. The first four will be awesome, and then it will be nonsense after that, if anyone even remembers to keep watching six months later. This is so stupid, and such a blatant attempt to capitalize on the excitement they built around this series. They are going to fuck this up now, I know it. They're going to scrap their original plan and make it meandering and try to make it last forever. This is really disappointing. Not everything is meant to go on for multiple seasons. They are going to dilute this to the point of boredom.

    Has Potential

    by thorin01

I saw the pilot at Comic Con and thought it showed potential. The pilot did feel VERY rushed, like they crammed a two hour story into a one hour show. The writing also tended towards telling us what was happening rather than showing us what was happening.

The Visitors show up in the first five minutes, big mistake. There was a big deal made about how the Visitors showed up just as the world was on the brink of major disasters and chaos, but no sense of that is given in the show. If they had spent 10 minutes or so establishing the pre-Visitor world it would have gone a LONG way to making the rest of the pilot work better. Give a real sense that the economy has really collapsed that wars are threatening to break out but they didn't do that.

The acting for the most part was good. The female lead was solid.

The FX were good by TV standards but I did get the impression that the show has very tight budget and it is being closely watched. There are no real WOW moments after the Visitors first appear and a couple of places where it would have been natural to show some high-tech toys opted instead for quick-edit hand-to-hand fight scenes.

Overall thought it did show potential. It accomplished the primary goal of any pilot in that I want to see the next episode.

    Huge Mistake

    by _maltheus_

That hiatus will destroy this show, so I guess we better hope it sucks. They should have just moved the first four eps back as well. Although premiering a show in March is pretty stupid too. I strongly believe that's the reason Kings died. Nobody expects new TV in March. Premieres should come in September, January or June (in that order). Especially shows with flagship potential. Regardless of quality or promotion, this show is now done.

    reason for the delay

    by kaiser soze

Don't know why they're not showing eps. in December, but the full article herc quoted said the delay till March has to do with the Winter Olympics. No new programming airs on any network during the olympics because they generally slaughter everything else in the ratings. The sad thing is, for those of us that could give a fuck less about figure skating and the lube...er, luge...we get stuck with crappy programming for a month. I knid of wonder if the start of 24 will be delayed, or if there will be a break in eps. during that time. THAT would suck diseased donkey balls.

V works as a series of "whatever day" night movie. NBC scored big rating that way, and when they took it to series.......well it lasted only a year. Make the four episodes in the can to a 4-hour mini-series, ans if it gets good ratings do another, almost like what the BBC does with that helen Mirran series about a detective.

    by jamf

with you guys watching a few eps of a show that you know isnt sticking around? you cant spend 4x45mins on a show just because you read this article and think 'they're gonna cancel it' or something? i watched pushing daisies and like it a lot, sought out wonderfalls for that reason. heard about carnivale years after it ended and enjoyed that too even though it never resolved anything due to cancellation. just watch it anyway. jeez.

and when did defying gravity get cancelled?! i started watching it coz its my kinda thing (futuristic science fiction space shit) but it was really irritating i think by the time i got to episode 3 or 4 i was just fastforwarding through 90% of it to get to the main story scenes (stuff about beta). really lamely written - then i wikipedia'd it, turns out it was pitched as grey's anatomy in space. grey's fucking anatomy. no wonder i couldnt stomach it. shame though i wanted to know what happened with beta.

the explanation for why their hair doesnt float was the lamest thing on television.

    by lv_426

and put this on the SyFy channel. That way they could've really pushed it thematically and not been cancelled before the show had some time to breath. Also, the effects on BSG look quit a bit better than what I've seen in the V previews. Zoic, who did BSG and Firefly/Serenity's digital effects could probably knock this one outta the park.Oh well, I'm still interested in this and hope I can see at least more than one or two episodes before it will most likely get canned.
