Speaking of ONG BAK 2 - here's the trailer!

Published at:  Sep 25, 2009 4:17:12 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here on Twitter during Fantastic Fest - and I just brought up ONG BAK 2 in my DAY 1 coverage. And here is the trailer that showed up in my email box - We did the North American Premiere of ONG BAK 2 back during Fantastic Fest's special programming at SXSW! And this movie kicked my ass hardcore - so I'm going to make sure I take care of some of you out there - and to help spread the word of Tony Jaa... Here's the trailer:

    by shalom82

I can expand, to the joy of the people. At the beginning of the movie, it looked like it could have actually been a Tarzan meets Conan meets Hero.
But then it just escalates into a series of pointless (but mostly good) fight scenes without even the hint of a plot.
I mean it, there is literally no plot, and by literally I actually mean literally. It is a diabolically awful film, with an "open ending" that is entirely pointless.
I think the highlight is probably a scene where Tony Jaa dresses up as a masked dancer in order to do something which I won't spoil but involves trying to kill the king but you see I didn't spoil it 'cause the king is alive at the end.
No words to describe how crappy this movie is, although I've used a lot, most of them more than once.

There's one awesome fight scene though. Which is more than once can say for "Youth Without Youth".

It's on DVD over here for a while...

    by derlanghaarige

...and it's, to say it nice, very underwhelming. The story is a huge boring mess, the movie ends exactly when it's getting interesting and while the fight scenes are well choreographed, they are everything else than spectacular or even something special. (Except for the "Elephant run") I even go so far and say that the fights in "Forbidden Kingdom" kick this movie's ass.

    by shalom82

(you know, he's in this movie!!) what the heck, the guy has no consistency whatsoever as an actor. like in the village fight where he kicks everyone's bum, why is he acting like he's insane? where was that coming from? i think he directed this movie, 'cause that's the only explanation for this level of quality control.

    Seen it.

    by barrignite

It was long, pretty incoherent but looked great. The fight scenes were decent but lacked the urgency of the first one or Warrior King. Its a fail, but no huge surprise considering Jaa is a first time director and he fucked off in to the woods for months during filming.

    by shalom82

what, you mean the comedy flick that had at least 2 asian-movie-clichè scenes with a fat arsehole sidekick with open shirt and stick runs angrily down a sidewalk only to be confronted by a rag-tag team of skinny asian hooligans dressed like they're in Michael Jackson's "Bad" video down the end of the road. He stops, freezes, look of disconcerted panic on his face, they point at him, he turns and runs screaming "AWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAWAAA!!" (which I guess must be Asian for "shit!jesus!fuck!"), arms flapping wildly while the skinny breakdancing emo hooligans run in hot pursuit.

    by the dark shite

Some fight scenes aside. The story is shit, the direction is all over the place, the acting is awful & the ending is ridiculous. It's a truly dreadful film.

    Possible spoiler.........

The ending is bullshit sequel bait. They basically say he's dead, unless the audience watching want to hope for his life. In which case there'll probably be an Ong Bak 3.

ong bak 3 set for a december 5th release date.
contains "unused footage" from ong bak 2. You know, like the stuff that was awesome, but not as awesome as the stuff in ong bak 2.
most of it was cut to make way for the 20 minute dancing scenes, so you can see it was worth it.

Wanna see a good thai movie? Watch "Mah Nakorn" (Citizen Dog) instead. Not alot of asskicking, but a movie with a zombie motorbike taxi, grandma lizard, helmet rain and recycling mountains has to be seen. Add to that the greatest opening of a movie ever(possibly).

Kung fu movies generally have shit stories...

    by sonnyfern

I don't watch a kung fu movie for a goddamn story, good acting...or fucking character development...matter of fact too much of that shit can RUIN a good kung fu movie...I watch a martial arts film to see people getting kicked in the head. There are rare acceptions (The Rebel had a great story AND killer fight scenes) but generally, if you chopey sockey flick tries to have too much story, it gets bogged down and boring..

i get not watching a martial arts movie for the story, but there's a big gap between what you call "too much" story and no story whatsoever. at the end of the day this is still a movie, and as such i want to feel excited. for me to feel excited when watching, something needs to be at stake. y'know, like in real fights, something is at stake. like an athlete's honour, or a championship title or simply reputation. this is a movie, it's not real, it's staged, so i'm not holding my breath 'cause i don't know who kicks more ass between tony jaa and evil henchman #16.
So, the stakes must be provided by the plot, whether Tony Jaa wins or loses, it's gotta mean something.
Here there's no story, no plot, nothing is at stake, it's just a collection of meaningless fight scenes without anything holding them together. If I want that I'll just watch some MMA on youtube.

    by the dark shite

I'm assuming she was his love interest (although she could have been his sister for all I can remember, as the plot was non-existant). He finds her, he saves her..then she vanishes & isn't seen again.

I am still laughing with the idiots who proclaimed

    by ominus

that Jaa is the successor of Bruce Lee,when Ong Bak first came out.
I enjoyed Ong Bak and Tony Jaa is indeed a very flexible and skillful athlete, but u know what? the guy is a stuntman, like jackie chan,he is not a martial artist, and even his stunts dont compare to Chan's stunts, mainly because he uses what he has learned: Muay Thai. and in my knowledge Muay Thai is based mainly on kicks and hits with your elbow.and that is shown clearly in Ong Bak (i havent watched the bodyguard yet),since his choreographies, although impreesive, the get very soon repeative and boring because he only uses kicks and elbow hits.
I am sorry but that guy isnt Bruce Lee,not even his little finger.

jaa does a lot more traditional(though still exceptional) stunts. The long shot if him in the hotel is mind blowingly awesome and something chan would never do(out fo safety's sake). He also branches out into new styles against some more varied opponents, his capoiera battle is anotehr highlight. But even so his movies generally suck. Where as even jackie's old movies like drunken master are still enjoyable to this day.

It's been out in Thailand for more than a year and HD-quality copies have been available on the net for almost as long. I watched it with some friends about half a year ago and had mixed feelings about it. While the fight scenes were Jaa-wesome, the story was all over the place. But the REAL pisser, the one that made it hard to wholeheartedly endorse this movie, was when the movie ended in the middle of the story. It just stopped. I half expected to hear a voiceover, "Tune in next week...same bat-time...". I mean, when the story was finally showing the slightest bit of coherence the movie's over. And all of what the "plot" was leading up to was never resolved. That bugged the hell out of me! So for fans of Tony Jaa, it is definitely worth seeing, but be prepared for story-disappointment at the end. For those who've never seen Jaa before, check out the first Ong-Bak or The Protector before you watch this one.

    Better recent Martial arts movies

    by charyoutree

    Ong Bak 1
    Flashpoint
    S.P.L
    Ip Man
    Even lesser movies like
Fearless, The Seven Swords and Rob-B-Hood were better than this. This movie was a fuckup, some decent but unmemorable fights in a poor mish-mashed (but great looking) movie. I think it was on Twitch about what happened with this movie and with Tony loosing his mind under the pressure running of into the jungle, being found and then appearing on TV crying, stories of gangsters interfering and wild demands. Something or someone happend to Tony after his new found fame.

    by sokitome

I have to agree with the majority here. OngBak2 is a mess. A mess with some good fighting but when the plot of the movie is so bad (or pretty much non existent as in this case) it then starts to take away from the beautiful violence. Ultimately this movie is a fail.

Instead of calling it Ong Bak 2: The Beginning, they could'vejust called it Ong Bak: The Beginning. Ong Bak 2 would imply a direct sequel, so they couldn't just go with that since it's a prequel, but not it's a sequel prequl sounding title that... you know what, fuck it...
