Huge Starts For MODERN & COUGAR!! SVU Plummets!! BEAUTIFUL Numbers Ugly!! Wednesday Ratings!!

Published at:  Sep 24, 2009 12:19:15 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

The networks were all finally at full strength with fresh Wednesday episodes last night; the 18-49 scores:

4.3 Modern Family
4.3 Cougar Town
4.2 Criminal Minds
4.0 CSI: NY
3.2 Dancing With The Stars
3.0 Eastwick
3.0 Glee
2.5 Law & Order: SVU
2.5 So You Think You Can Dance
2.4 Gary Unmarried
2.3 Mercy
2.3 The New Adventures of Old Christine
2.0 The Jay Leno Show
1.3 America’s Next Top Model
0.5 The Beautiful Life

* ABC’s “Modern Family,” likely the best-reviewed new show of fall, came out on top for the night alongside slotmate “Cougar Town.” The pair took out a lot of tough competition at the 9 p.m. hour, including “Criminal Minds,” “Glee,” and “Law & Order: SVU,” which plummeted a terrifying 34% from its 10 p.m. 2008 premiere.

* In the sitcom realm, only Monday’s “Big Bang Theory” (4.6) and “Two and a Half Men” (4.4) have pulled higher numbers than “Modern” and “Cougar” this autumn.

* “SVU” has been the strongest of the “Law & Orders” for years now and was, if I remember correctly, NBC’s top-rated scripted show at the end of last season. Could this fourth-place finish finally signal the end of the 20-year-old franchise on broadcast television?

* “Mercy” debuted in the lower middle of the 8 p.m. pack, ahead of “Top Model” and “Old Christine” but behind “Gary Unmarried” and the two dance shows.

* “Leno’s” number, better than Monday but weaker than Tuesday, left him for the third night in a row the weakest of the big-four shows.

* “The Beautiful Life” drew an abyssmal 1.1 million viewers, compared to the 2.5 million “Veronica Mars” averaged during its final year three seasons ago.

Good on you, Nielson families. Now let's get that to none, 5 days a week and maybe next season we'll only have a handful. How many dance competition shows does the world need? Answer: 1. And it includes executions at the end, especially if politicians are competing. And nudity.

I felt the same way, like the editor had some sort of attention disorder and the original cut was 44 min. And they need to decide that the performers are aware of the cameras or not. This half-assed thing is bad. But it was VERY funny. Almost as good as Big Bang Theory, which has been consistently funny from day one. It reminds me of the old days of filmed sitcoms like Cheers and Taxi. Tons of quotable characters, laugh out loud moments and pure geek/nerd accuracy/attention to detail.

    by felwithe

I don't think I'll seek the show out again unless I happen across it while channel surfing, but I like that they're at least trying to do something new. A son walking in on his mother giving a blowjob to her date qualifies as edgy on network TV, so, good for them.

It feels like there's a good show in there somewhere, the pilot just wasn't it. Maybe if they don't get canceled they'll find a stride and become more watchable.

Christine Lahti as the new ADA and the dude from Prison Break as the "renegade cop" was excessive stunt casting. One of the cool aspects of L&O has often been breakout roles from lesser-known actors. I half expect the entire cast of Hill Street Blues to be given roles this year.

The Good, The Bad and The Lame

    by raromo

Modern Family looks really good. Lots of potential. And I really enjoy Glee. Cougar Town though tripped all over itself. Like the type of fake comedy we'd have if the pods start taking over, but don't want the non-pod people to know yet, so once they take over the airwaves they try to imitate what TV comedies are like. But don't let them fool you-- Keep watching the skies! The forgotten has an interesting premise, but the execution is unimaginative-- just like any other drab cop show on TV already (and did we really need [SPOILER] the fake poignancy of having Slater's own daughter be one of the missing?) [END OF SPOILER] We didn't even attempt to watch Mercy after seeing the promotions. Feisty lady nurse who really, really cares about her patients? Was the script written in crayon? I'd tell the producers and writers: No more banannas for you if you can't come up with an original idea and dialog. Observation: Ever notice on these gawd-awful shows how the direction and production value are competent -- it's just the writing that sucks? Finally, I hate having Leno hog 5 hours of TV that could go towards scripted shows, but the grim truth is that unless his ratings stay below 1.5 consistently, he's still making money for NBC, so they're probably popping a cork right about now.

NBC needs to borrow its sister Univision's Sabado Gigante Format

    by dailysportspages

And use that for Leno on Saturdays.

He could have a nice 3 hour show every Saturday, giving him a nice showcase for his little games, up and coming comics, musical number, his various segments such as jaywalking and the one with newspaper ads, etc... He could even incorporate some skits in there as well, why not?
It could be like a combination of his Tonight Show, an old fashioned Variety Show, and a SNL for old people :)

You put it on from like 7PM to 10PM, followed by one of those reality recaps or news shows, the regular news at 11, and then the old people can go to sleep and SNL starts.

    18-49

    by karuma

In 1981 the advertising firm of Melton, Beecher, and Holcomb (NY) was having trouble attracting new television clients. A junior partner, Hailey Jane Barkum took to her bosses a new scenario that would change TV advertising forever. She claimed that research done by her and her staff indicated that the firm should start to divert itself to clients that skewed toward the "middle years" range because they were more likely to buy the products their clients offered and they would be longer living customers. MB and H bit, and they developed the 18-49 model that is in use today. The firm took the numbers to the networks and they also bit. Since then most programming has been skewed toward this age group and advertisers look for these shows to sell ad time on. There is just one problem. The research never existed. Barkum and her crew made it up because, get this, they were tired of working half a day on Saturday and they figured if they could get their department split into another section they would have those days off. Needless to say, it worked. And today, advertisers push their products to that group. There is, however, another problem. There is absolutely no evidence anywhere that advertising to this group has raised sales numbers. As a matter of fact, this group ranks near the bottom in purchasing new products. Why? 1. Because they don't have any money. They are raising a family, paying off college debt, buying a house, etc. 2. Mostly, research shows they buy the same products they grew up with because they know it works and they are familiar with it. Who then, buys the "new" stuff? 10-17 and over 55. And guess what, a greater percentage of them watch TV than 18-49. By the way, only the last part of this is true.

    The Curse of Ben Silverman

    by rob0729

Ben Silverman put a deathnail of a fall schedule up and then went running for the hills. Leno will bring down ratings for all their shows. L&O:SVU vs. Criminal Minds, the ABC comedy block, and Glee sends them scrambling for rating scraps. It would hold its own at 10PM, but Leno is sucking there.
Leno may be profitable with a 2 share, but it send their legacy 10 PM shows into the 8-10PM log jam. A weekly procedural that deals with rape and other sex crimes probably isn't appealing at 9PM.

level ratings may be just enough to make that stupid Leno show profitable enough/low risk enough to stay on the air. 1.6 will certainly kill it. At least 2.0 probably isn't enough to inspire thoughts of replicating this horrible experiment in the empty echo chambers of the other networks.

I loved "Veronica Mars" Herc, but...

    by mr. profit

You have to admit that while "90210" and "Gossip Girl" seemingly pull in lower ratings, they are 2 of The CW's most illegally downloaded shows. If you do a YouTube search the next day after each show airs, you will find the full episodes illegally uploaded on the site with thousands of views. Also both shows are consistently in the iTunes Top 10. "Veronica Mars" was a well done show with top notch acting and a strong female lead. But it never had the online following or presence both "Gossip Girl" and "90210" have. And it was rarely a top iTunes download. Oddly, "Gossip Girl" is their most buzzed about show this season, but "90210" has changed it's entire tone and became a completely different animal since Rebecca Rand Kirshner Sinclair started overseeing it. No longer is it a show where the writers throw the characters into stupid issue driven plots. Now the characters are defined and drive what's happening. And that's a good thing. I never watched "Gilmore Girls", but I guess this Rebecca Sinclair chick knows what the fuck she is doing. "90210" has become their best show (and dare I say it, better than the original).

I agree with many of the talkbackers. L&O shows are perfect for the 10p.m. slot. You didn't need to watch them every week if you were too tired or could just toon in if there was nothing else on.

    I'm enjoying Glee

Guy. Married. Watch it with my wife. Any guy on this board whining about Glee must not have seen the "I bust the windows out your car" musical number.

That'll teach those fuckers to cancel Veronica Mars

I hope every single new show they program continues to tank in the ratings, because these exec's need to learn their lesson somehow.

Surprised How Much We Liked CougarTown

    by deandome

My wife & I both laughed out loud SIGNIFICANTLY more than we did w/Modern Family (which we both like, too!). We like Glee, but (as always) Robert Bianco..the best TV critic working...is dead-on in his assessment of the bipolar nature of that show; the entire baby plot(s) has to go. On what freaking planet would a father not touch and LOOK at his pregnant wife's belly on a daily basis? Now they're actually looking to EXTEND the impossible charade to the point where a baby-swap w/the cheerleader might be plausible? OH...the funniest show on TV is..hands down...Psych.

I still like the show, but I think more of Finn and Much would help. Mariska is always a goddess and a good actor, but it seems the show stresses Benson a little too much.

The CW execs are just pain dumb

    by alpha

The top rating show they had was WWE Smackdown, now people can think what they like about wrestling but cutting a show that rates about twice as much as your next best rated show is just plain stupid especially when production cost wise it's relativly cheap. They used the excuse that they were targeting young womenbut clearly these people have no idea what young women actually watch.

kabong: Agreed that Leno should be earlier.

    by royston lodge

Leno's content isn't appropriate for 10pm. It's a family-friendly show. So by pushing everything else to an earlier timeslot Leno is forcing all the dramatic writers to water down their stuff.
NBC's nightly schedule could go something like this:
    8pm - Stupid reality show.
    9pm - Leno
    10pm - Something decent.
    11pm - Local news.

    Or, run Leno at 8pm and . . .

    by royston lodge

. . . use the show to PROMOTE the rest of the evening. His guests could all be whoever's guest starring on the shows running after Leno.

I expect a written apology on my desk by 4pm.
