    Ian McKellen on The Hobbit

    by snikkar124

Rotten Tomatoes got a chance to talk to Ian McKellen at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain where he said he's looking forward to getting to play Gandalf the Grey again in The Hobbit. "Grey Gandalf is my favorite," he said. "Peter Jackson's too, we always preferred Gandalf the Grey. Peter liked him because he got down and dirty. He slept in the hedgerows; he was closer to the earth and not quite so spiritual. He's also funnier -- he's got more variety to him. We thought there was more scope in that Gandalf." The first of the two "Hobbit" films to be directed by Guillermo del Toro is hitting theaters in December of 2011, followed by the second in December of 2012.

KNB's Howard Berger on the New Predators

    by snikkar124

Moviehole got a chance to talk to Howard Berger of effects shop KNB about the upcoming Robert Rodriguez-produced Predators, directed by Nimrod Antal for a July 7, 2010 release. The new film involves a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors - that are not always from outside their group. "I just saw some photos today and they look absolutely fantastic!," said Berger, who got his start working with Stan Winston on films like Predator and Aliens. He added that they are now in pre-production and that they "wanted to have the Predator look as it did in the original film. We went back and looked at the original. I actually worked in the shop with Stan Winston on the first film. It was great to be able to go back to the series having not been involved in any of the sequels, and it was also great to be able to make sure we built them as Stan Winston did. "They look really fantastic. There's a whole bunch of cool [Predators] in the film, and everyone's going to be very happy that we've been very faithful to the Stan Winston designs... It's shooting very soon."

Raimi to Produce Supernatural Horror Pic Refuge

    by snikkar124

Sam Raimi has signed on to produce supernatural horror film Refuge, based on a pitch from up-and-coming British director Corin Hardy. The project has been set up at Mandate. Refuge centers on a remote town terrorized by a Yeti, the mythological creature native to the mountains of the Himalayas. Hardy will direct from a script by fellow British writer Tom De Ville. Blum's Blumhouse Productions will finance a short film with the same premise as the Refuge feature. Hardy and De Ville will work on that as well. The idea is to offer a teaser that can help Hardy refine his vision even as the script is being developed.

I LOVE how liberals make ultra violent movies the top of the box office every weekend and the best selling games of all time (predominantly war-based games, I might add) -- yet when a real war breaks out, it's time to break out the flowers and tie-dye t-shirts. If the Iraq War V.2 taught us anything, it's that even Middle Eastern people are useless at holding a cameraphone still at a dictator's execution.

...yes, we like make-believe movies and games a lot more than the real thing. Your argument is one of the most ridiculous ones I have ever come across. I love how conservatives assume because people are against the war in Iraq, they are automatically liberals and pussies. Actually, it's the conservatives that are pussies because most of them are chicken hawks and rather believe in a person, rather than idea. You know, the idea of truth. And the truth is: the Iraq war will go down as the biggest blunder and fuck up of U.S. history. Waste of human life and money.

I don't think the Iraq War was necessary. I just think its funny when some nitwit starts comparing Sodom Insane and his rapist thugs and the Iranian financed insurgents who lop off people's heads with the Wolverines. Even if I did support the war, its irrelevant whether or not I volunteered for it. I support fires being fought, but I'm not a firefighter. I support crime being curtailed, but I'm not a cop. I support the Coast Guard, Navy, Marine Corps, and the March of Dimes, yet I don't work for those organizations either. You must be one hell of a multi-tasker to be able to participate in 100% of all of the causes you support. We think it's funny when people like yourself start banging on those who are oppose to the war as liberals or pussies. Then make claims about how liberals want to tax everyone and fix everything.

You need to put yourself in the life of an average Iraqi... What would it be like to have your country invaded for no reason? There were no terrorists until the occupier showed up. No WMD. NO links to terrorists. Then see how your families and friends have their heads lobbed off because of religious differences. Then see your country burn... how would you feel? Then again, when Americans ask that, we're pussies or liberals. I like to think that we give an actual fuck ... even if it's a Muslim or brown person. Or hell, I give a fuck when it's our government putting us at risk by invading a country that only increases the threat of terrorism (see 2003 NIE) and throws away almost a trillion dollars.

The war mongers have traditionally been on the left. Wilson, WWI. FDR, WWII. Truman, Korean War. Kennedy/LBJ, Vietnam. Nixon, ends Vietnam. Reagan, ends Cold War. Clinton, Kosovo (in addition to bombing a dozen other countries). Obama, expanding the war into Pakistan. As for the Bushes, they're neocons. The neocon movement was founded by a bunch of Trotskyites. So it ain't surprising when they massively grow the size of government, come up with "Homeland" security or start a bunch of liberal nation building wars.

I wonder if you would help them if one of your family members was killed by a blackwater merc? Or maybe a misfire from a U.S. fighter plane on your wedding day? You don't know what you would do because you're not an Iraqi and have suffered loss for no reason.

To state that Iraq will become Turkey or Jordan within 10 years is disingenuous at best. It is number 6 on the "Failed States Index" of unsustainable countries. It sure was run by a despot and a corrupt military government - but at least it was run. Trying to justify our illegal invasion and "dismemberment" of the country with "well, they're better off now" sounds naive and repugnant. Ask any of the 5 million estimated orphans, or 4 million refugees how they feel now - was it better having a relatively secure country run by a jerkoff yesterday, or today having an anarchy with a toilet-paper strong government that doesn't have enough power to prevent your neighbor from blowing the F out of you because he disagrees with your religion / political stance? We put that country on the path to chaos, with no justification whatsoever, and anyone that even tries to make it seem like "they're better off" should go try living there for a bit without the defense of the Marines and get back to us

I think to say that Hussein "ran" his country is disingenuous. The no fly zones pretty much kept his political reach within the confines of central Iraq.So have you actually asked any of the orphans and refugees? What did they say? Should I feel the same shame upon asking someone who was orphaned by an allied bomb in Germany or Japan if they were better off under their respective dictatorial madmen? And to state that Iraq can't be Jordan in 10 years, that its not even a 'possibility', is rather ridiculous. Jordan is not exactly Sweden.

It was a different time, as Mad Men always tries too hard to tell us. Yeah, Kennedy was a liberal, for his time. The major difference being that Germany and Japan (if you are, in fact, referring to their involvement in World War II) were two major powers actively invading and conquering other sovereign nations.

Iraq was a country that was no threat to the United States. Had NO weapons of mass destruction. Had NO active ties to Al Qaeda or involvement in September 11. And the United States illegally invaded, destroyed and conquered the country at the behest of it's Administration (at the time's) wish for whatever unjustifiable reason (revenge, oil, etc.). I'm not sure why you're trying to draw comparison. Iraq didn't attack the US or its allies. Germany and Japan did.

Kind of like how the modern "conservative" movement is nothing like actual conservatism? So if you're criticising liberalism that isn't actually liberalism, and I'm criticising conservatism that isn't actually conservativism, why are we still using these outdated labels if they don't actually apply-- and often represent the exact opposite-- of what we're talking about?

The Allies bombed innocents in the millions during WW2; we killed 100,000 Japanese civilians in one night during the Tokyo fire bombings. We bombed Dresden into the stone age even though it had no military merit. Your main point to me was that I needed to look at the outcome of the innocents who suffered during the Iraq invasion. So are you then saying that its okay that children were orphaned during the second World War because their governments were more belligerent than the Axis? Is it wrong to bomb innocents during warfare or not, keeping in mind that we intentionally targeted civilian populations whereas we tried, however half-assed, to avoid them this time around.I think the invasion was a bad idea fed by a desire to start changing the Middle East politik, groupthink ,and faulty intelligence. There are plenty of legitimate arguments from all sides as to why it shouldn't have happened. But if I talked about the glory days of Saddam when he "ran" his country and everyone was fine, as you are, I'd feel a little dirty inside.

It's all about context, and in your case, apparently taking things out of it. My point was not about declaring Saddam's reign over Iraq the "glory days" (which they were certainly were not), my point was to dispel any rationalization that what the US did to Iraq was a GOOD thing. You're comparing the US's wars with Germany and Japan to it's invasion of Iraq, which are in no way, shape or form the same thing. Germany and Japan were powerful nations that set out in either greed / insanity or desperation to conquer their realms of influence, usually at the cost of their own citizens. The United States eventually bombing of either nation was just as horrendous as any war. The difference being we were responding to an outright attack on the World itself by two powerful enemies. The US, in 2003, was a massively powerful nation demolishing a country that could in no way or how pose any threat to it (or mount any sort of defense). My comments on "ask these people" was to dispel your earlier statements that seemed to indicate the US invasion and occupation was a noble effort for the benefit of the Iraqi people - when that was darn well not the intention, NOR the result.

You don't know the result. It may end up being a continued disaster, or it might end up being the best thing that happened to the middle east since Ataturk. To imply that the intention and the result (not known yet) was 100% malevolent and will be 100% bad for Iraq is a gross oversimplification that is just plain wrong. Many people in Iraq are better off, and will prosper not living under Hussein.Does that justify the invasion completely? No. But I'm not going to make the absurd claim that absolutely no overall good will ever come out of the deposing of Saddam, which is the claim you seem to making.Deposing Saddam Hussein is a noble goal, but was it worth the cost and the damage? That is the question you should be asking.

To Omarthesnake: Nothing Im saying is jingoistic at all and I have a DD214 that shows my pedigree. I like the point that violence in its cinematic and video game incarnations seem to have a vast appeal with the basement dwellers who are the same folks that would shit themselves in real life. This only backs up my theory that most bleeding heart liberals WANT to have the balls to risk it all for something they believe in but their lack of cajones relegates themselves to jealous spectators living vicariously through HD avatars. Another point I should make is how many hot liberal hippie chicks I banged that loved the uniform. Its funny how these chicks preach and protest peace an love but will hop in the sack with a soldier in a heartbeat. Theyre probably tired of the testosterone impaired effeminate liberal males planting organic gardens and watching LIFETIME. You can call it arrogance but at least its based on experience. So, occupy yourself with your Modern Warfare 2 while you wait with anticipation for yet another big screen spectacle with booms and bangs and revel in teh fact that you have lived a tepid colorless life where your belief system is valueless because youre unwilling to risk anything more for it then your shallow words and shaking knees.

We're seeing the result right now. The facts are in. The information is there. Of course, the US News Media has grown tired of the whole thing so it's not played out on TV screens every night. But the results are there. There was nothing noble about US intentions in Iraq. It was entirely self-serving. The "noble deposing" of Saddam Hussein was a side-effect that was counted on, but not the main priority. More people are dying monthly in Iraq today than under Hussein. Saying that "many people" are prospering is to be completely ignorant of what is going on over there. Hoping that a utopia will spring up out of nowhere. And even if 20-50 years down the line the country manages to finally pull itself together, it will be no thanks to us. So to try and justify, AT ALL, the invasion as a noble effort to "free" the good people of Iraq "for their own sake" is complete BS. The facts are there. "Deposing Saddam Hussein is a noble goal, but was it worth the cost and the damage? That is the question you should be asking." Asked and answered. No, it was not. If a majority of the people of Iraq rose up to free their country, and we went in and supported them, then it would have been a noble effort. Instead, we took it upon ourselves to invade and effectively destroy the place for our own selfish goals. There's no sane method to sugar-coat it.

But Olbermann, O'Reilly and Beck are all fucktards. They substitute actual news with high school bullshit. Seriously, what a waste of time that no major news personality has sat down and talked soberly about health care. There's a wealth of information that we could consider which would reshape the debate and make for better policy. Instead, what we saw at those town hall meetings was a product of the information the major news outlets is delivering to the people. No, we can't expect Jim Lehrer to take over the nation's airwaves, but do we need to hear about the sexual proclivities of any politician, R or D during this time in our history? As long as they're not raping, sexually assaulting anyone OR abusing their office for personal gain, no we don't.

And while there are places and forums for this, it hardly adds anything to a more reasoned understanding of the issues and facts surrounding them. The reality is that we now live in the world of the 24 hour news cycle. Yet ironically enough, there is probably no more than 2-3 hours of genuine, concrete news (depending on the scope of national/international topics discussed) worth reporting on any given day. That means the rest of the cycle is nothing more than a constant rehash of a select group of items told in a sound-byte format which are then put through the editorial/entertainment meat grinder. Who knew that the press (aka media) was as good at making sausage as our beloved politicians.

    Oh yes, the good wars

    by _maltheus_

WWI and WWII may not have been war mongering, per se, but it was most certainly about power mongering. It's recently been proven beyond doubt that we were transporting munitions on the Lusitania. So there goes our casus belli. WWI was none of our business, and if we would have stayed out of that one, the Treaty of Versailles, would not have been so onerous, and the odds of a psychopath gaining power in Germany, promising vengeance for Versaille, would have been greatly diminished.
As for Lincoln being another anomaly in my theory, that's going back so far that the modern day liberal and conservative labels barely apply. Regardless, in the 20th century, most wars were brought to us by liberals. Both in this country and abroad. You can't deny the facts.
I will concede that, in saying Nixon ended Vietnam and Reagan ended the cold war, I was exacerbating somewhat to make a point. But those wars did end as the result of their actions. Even if they weren't particularly good presidents.
As for Bush, I'm not sure if I really think of him as commie, but it is an indisputable fact, that the neo-con movement was founded by former Trotskyites. It wasn't ever a secret. Bush expanded government to unprecedented levels. That is the polar opposite of conservatism. He hired the former head of the KGB and former head of the Stasi to work on internal documentation programs for Homeland/Motherland/Fatherland Security. If it quacks like a duck, it's a duck. Just like Joe Isuzu, when he says he's a conservative, HE'S LYING. You judge a person by their actions, not their words.
And lastly, Glenn Beck is the worst thing to happen to the conservative movement, since Bush. That is all.

    by grinning white skull

Haha! This is the most idiotic remake, and there are so many, that has ever been done! Just rent or buy the original film on DVD. It'll be a million times better and cost you a lot less to view. Biggest indication to how bad this remake will be? It's directed by a stuntman/first time director. The Sci-Fi Channel (or whatever it's called now) has a ton of movies directed by such that make absolutely no sense...which they try to make up for with a lot of mind-numbing explosions and stuntmen flying through the air.

And there are a lot of people who are either maniacs or pisstakers. Something I always wanted to know: why do conservatives take issue with Obama's tax policy? Would they rather he ran up a gargantuan national debt like Bush and mortgaged the country's crown jewels to old enemies like China and Russia?

    What's Truly Funny

    by sgt.steiner

is John Milius' politics are far more complex and interesting than any of the one-dimensional views laid down here. The dude is a self-descrobed "zen anarchist" who said Rush should be hung for defending Wall Street goons who helped bring on the recession. He is pro-choice, pro-union, and was a critic of the George W. Bush Administration. He is also a ranking member of the National Rifle Association. And while many of you argue about the Cold War, but if "Red Dawn" was 100% a serious "propaganda" film, would the invading Soviets be showing "Alexander Nevsky" and taking guns from the "cold, dead fingers" of guys who have bumper stickers with the very same slogan?

If you like Milius, you may want to check this out:

    Commies galore.

    by flurryofchocolateglazedkrispykremedonuts

Seems like, yeah, there's still a few regimes around that lay claim to being "communist" such as Cuba and North Korea. But they're really just your average nutbag banana republicans (small "r" here folks!). Definitely not of the caliber of the old school Soviet Union. It's a good thing for the world that the Cold War was fought via Third World proxies and crazy ass spy games, if it had turned hot, we'd all be particles of radioactive ash blowing around (Harry'd be a LOT of particles of radioactive ash blowing around). China claims to still be communist, but they're too busy cranking out DVD players, and everything else, to spend too much time obsessing about it. What's twisted is how most conservatives still miss the Cold War. Hell, I remember when the old time communists tried to stage a coup to regain power in Russia back in the early 90's, that blowhard Hillbilly Heroin addict Limbaugh was actually rooting for them, he had such a hard on for the Cold War to start up again. Sure now you've got Putin in charge, but again, dude's no commie, just a two bit mobster, got lucky. And hell, with a basket case country like Russia, who else could or would want to try and run the place and actually have some success doing so besides the mob?

To give credit to the original movie, the opening crawler does portait a world in a slighlty near future where there was conditions enough to justify the russian invasion of USA, as the USa were totally isolated form the rest of the world and russia suffered a terrible drought and needed farming land urgently, and because neither the USa or USSr were open for dialogue and commerce, the russians took a desperate action.I'm a left-winger guy, pretty much a real left-winger, of the type there isn't in USA, and i really like the original Red Dawn. There's a quality to the movie that surpasses whatever political differences i might have with John Milius. Basically, it's a good movie.

Chineses don't need to invade USA to rule it

    by asimovlives

All they need is to call in the loans. Then, both China and Saudi Arabia would own the USA, with Canada, Germany and France as minor partners.

It's about time the USA finally understand they do not own Asia. tha tpart of the Pacific Rim has it's own overlords. WWII happened a long time ago, you ar eno longer justified to think you own the place or that the asian natives owe you anything.

to read all the anti-American bullshit. You bet we suck. What a stinking shit-hole of a country this is. I do really wish that for just a few years we could pull all of our interests out of the rest of the world. All of them. If there is some disaster or catastrophe the rest of the world is on their own. Pull back all the military and bring them home. Whacko nut-job dictator invading your country? Tough. Go ask France for help. Gigantic tsunami/volcano/earthquake devastating your populace? Call up China and have them send the humaitarian aid. Nobody else in the market to buy all your electronic goods? Why don't you buy them yourself. We'll get back to making our own and buying it domestically. Like we should have been doing all along. I know I sound like a raving lunatic, but as a citizen it get's discouraging to be part of a population that does try to be a good partner with the world and get mostly criticism in return, if not outright hatred. News Flash: ALL of the world's governments are corrupt to some degree. We're just the most famous. Oh yeah, this flick might be OK.

to see the right wing as apoplectic and pissed off as I was from about Feb 2002 till...I dunno, let's call it October 2005. After the 2004 election and Katrina I just had outrage fatigue. Dick Cheney could have ass-raped a 10 year old boy on TV while gutting a still-live kitten and I couldn't have managed to get angry.

Sooner or later the right wing will end up in the same place. So I have only two comments on a political discussion in the one place I hoped to avoid it: 1) How's it feel to be on the other side, fuckers? 2) Does EVERYTHING in this country have to be about hating the other side for not thinking like you?

Oh, and as for Red Dawn...why? Just why? They should just do a remake of Roadhouse. That movie is BEGGING for Keanu.

Not specifically you, just the right in general. And I can admit to going through much the same phase as you, but then after a few months you realize that isolationism just ain't practical in this world.

    THE COLD WAR IS OVER...

    by chishu_ryu

...thus, this stupid remake won't truly resonate with anyone outside of stupid right wing-nuts who see the Chino-Russo invasion as a stupid metaphor for Obama subliminally turning us all into communists...
