Herc’s Seen ABC’s Braga/Goyer Sci-Fi Pilot FLASHFORWARD!!
SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!
The best part of the “FlashForward” pilot is easily its first 18 minutes, which you can watch right here right now:
It’s a lot like the beginning of “Lost,” is it not? Guy wakes up confused and gradually discovers and deals with the cinematic mayhem that has risen up around him. There’s even a difficult-to-explain kangaroo subbing for the “Lost” pilot’s polar bear.
So that first part with the wreckage and the corpses? Well-copied.
But the “FlashForward” pilot was adapted not by super-successful writer-director J.J. Abrams, but by Brannon Braga (creator of “Star Trek: Enterprise”) and David Goyer (writer-director of “Blade Trinity”), who previously created CBS’ “Threshold.” Which was not remotely as good or as successful as “Lost.”
Once the mayhem is dealt with viewers may start to notice two other major things that distinguish “FastForward” from “Lost”:
1) Everybody on screen is catching on to what’s going on a lot more slowly than the audience is. Which gets boring. And annoying.
2) None of the show’s many characters (or their flashforwards) is terribly interesting or engaging. At the end of the “Lost” pilot you were dying to know not only what was going on with Smokezilla and that bizarre French radio signal but also what the deal was with handcuffed Kate and evasive Charlie and the vaguely sinister Locke. Even less mysterious characters like Shannon and Hurley were so entertaining in their own ways that viewers were excited at the prospect of spending more time with them as well.
Less problematic for “FlashForward” is the fact that the “Threshold” series creators apparently took a couple liberties with the the sci-fi novel by Robert J. Sawyer
, in which, thanks to a super-high-energy experiment gone wrong, everyone in the world passes out and experiences two minutes and 17 seconds of his or her own life 21 years in the future.
The TV version of the premise, maybe slightly less brimming with potential, puts the flashforwards only several months ahead, and nobody knows what caused them. In the final minute of the pilot we are given a clue of sorts, and it makes for a great ending. If you’re impatient and don’t mind spoilers you can find how here.
The date everyone flashes forward to, April 29, 2010, is a Thursday, and a key new episode of “FlashForward” is currently slated to air on that date. If this series gets that far against “Survivor,” “SNL Thursday,” “Bones” and “Vampire Diaries,” that episode will likely NOT be the season finale, according to Goyer.
In the flashforward experienced by the Joe Fiennes FBI character, the Fiennes character is seen investigating the cause of the flashforward. But even though everyone learns the exact future date and time of the two-plus minutes their memories will capture, no one in the flashforwards makes an effort to surround themselves with useful ballscore tables and/or stock market charts. So apparently the flashforward event paradoxically changes the timing of -- or eliminates -- the big communal flashforward. Or something.
“Lost” vet Dominic Monaghan is not in the pilot but does turn up, I believe, as a superscientist in episode two. If you watched the clip above you may have recognized the doctor is embodied by Sonya Walger, who plays Penny Widmore on “Lost.”
Insufferable “Family Guy” mastermind Seth MacFarlane, who cameos in the pilot as an FBI man, is a horrible distraction. He uses for his “FlashForward” role the same obnoxious deejay voice he uses to play the dog in “Family Guy.” Let’s try to keep his particular brand of unfunny confined to Fox, shall we fellas?
I’m setting the DVR for episode two, but this pilot does not convince me “FlashForward” is season-passworthy.
Time Magazine says:
… I wish more attention had been paid to fleshing out the characters and generally bringing a fresher voice to the dialogue. (Someday, I want someone to bring a cool high-concept like this to a producer like Jason Katims, who can play it out realistically through rounded characters, as he did on Roswell.) … Do I Want to Watch Another Episode? Absolutely. But please work on making these folks as appealing conscious as they are unconscious.
USA Today says:
From its unsettling opening image to its startling final shot, FlashForward could be the best network movie you'll see this year. Now let's hope it's an equally good series. … may not keep you hooked for years or even months, but chances are good tonight's episode will bring you back next week.
The New York Times says:
… begins in such a spirit of bracing suspense that I am challenged to recall another pilot that lured me so quickly into addiction. … has the sobriety and charge of the best, early days of “24” but builds its tension more gracefully and feels reluctant to be get subsumed by its own philosophizing. And like “Battlestar Galactica,” its has a presumed message that is humanistic and uplifting: No single messiah can save us; it takes a village to save the world.
The Los Angeles Times says:
… a decent but not brilliant beginning. … Given the subject, it's almost appropriate how unusually difficult it is to get a fix on the show. The pilot is melodramatically eventful, though the dialogue can sound phony. But the show could go either way -- be kind of great or pretty awful, depending on what comes next, how the writers plan to explain this thing and whether we are going to have any fun on the way to the explanation. … we have seen a lot of doctors and FBI agents on TV -- four of the main characters work for the bureau -- and spent a lot of time on the streets of Los Angeles. We may need more than parlor tricks to take us out of that all-too-familiar world. My crystal ball remains cloudy on this matter.
The Chicago Tribune says:
… Elements that generally work in the two-hour pilot's favor -- a big budget, a flashy central concept and a handsome ensemble cast -- also work against it because those are the hallmarks of several ABC pilots that have crashed and burned in their debut seasons. … What "FlashFoward" lacks, at this point, is a Sawyer or a Hurley; don't look to this serious pilot for wisecracks or regular-Joe wisdom. …
The Washington Post says:
… Immediately apparent from the premiere of "FlashForward": The questions may prove more satisfying than the answers, a bad sign. … "FlashForward," with lots of flash-cut editing (oddly offset with long, slow dialogue scenes) and some eye-pleasing special effects, seems a show very much of today and today's version of tomorrow and maybe even tomorrow's version of today. But if it were a little less ditzy and a little more clear-cut, it might stand a better chance of seeing tomorrow itself.
The San Francisco Chronicle says:
… enormously entertaining and there's mystery galore here, with an expansive cast, an unexplained phenomenon and the tantalizing premise … Here's hoping it stays strong and compelling as it heads to April 29.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says:
… suspenseful, disaster-filled entertainment. But will what comes next be as entertaining? If only we could flash forward to find out. …
The Newark Star Ledger says:
Ambitious but not terribly engaging … An interesting idea, but placed in the middle of a bland cast of characters (including Joseph Fiennes as an FBI agent and Sonya Walger as his doctor-wife) and execution that lacks much urgency. …
The Boston Herald says:
… Every season there seems to be one water-cooler show everyone ends up talking about. “FlashForward” is it: Get in on the first episode. …
The Boston Globe says:
… Tonight’s episode is dramatic and well-paced, unfolding ominously and quickly explaining the issues at hand. The problem, of course, is the future. What “Lost’’ had on its side was a desert-island setting, plus a sprawling and quirky ensemble cast with a range of back stories to spin. … “FlashForward’’ is a good idea, and while that’s no guarantee of a good series, the first hour gives us reason to hope.
Variety says:
… Strictly grading the pilot, it's an intriguing, mind-bending concept that's mostly well executed, with a built-in payoff cleverly timed to coincide with the May rating sweeps. The bottom line is after one hour, there's a solid desire to see more, but not such wonderment as to proclaim unwavering fealty until the show peers a little farther down the road. …
The Hollywood Reporter says:
… The investigation of this consciousness-shattering global phenomenon is assumed by the Los Angeles bureau of the FBI, which is a little like giving Mr. Kotter's science class responsibility for checking out global warming. (In Sawyer's book, particle physicists tackled the issue, but when was the last time you saw one of those on TV?) … Well-cast and full of expensive-looking special effects, "FlashForward" should hook a respectable number of viewers with its combination of surprise and suspense. …

But bitch slapping Hercules for not knowing anything about TV, is like shooting fish in a barrel.
Most people have seen this pilot weeks ago, as it leaked online. And consequently formed opinions about it already.
I think it's worth a look. It interested me enough to read the book, (which was good, but you can tell the TV show will not go the same direction, plot wise.)
I will probably give it until Ep6 or November sweeps. That's usually long enough to judge a show these days. Whether it was the shit-tastic Bionic Woman, or the decent Journeyman. -
True - and this show does look fun. But please... it's NOT LOST. They've already said their aiming to answer most the mythology questions raised in 101 by the end of S1, then branch into a new mythology. That's the anti-Lost.

South Park. Family Guy is something I enjoy as lounge TV, South Park tries to tell stories beyond 'heh - Peter bought the wrong steak.'

If it IS going to happen and he still wants to do it, an update would be nice. This topic would have been perfect for that. Too bad.Miyamoto, as much I would love a TB devoted EXCLUSIVELY to Supernatural for once, asking for it after 5 years of neglect on Herc's part is pointless. Let it go, move on. Family Guy and South Park are different shows, but I consider both to be great television. Comparing them is pointless, because they are aimed at different audiences.

I don't really get what the point of moving the "future date" from 21 years to 6 months is. 21 years seems too far away for a TV show but 6 months? That seems really limiting to me. Unless every episode of the show, like Lost, is going to take place over the span of a day or so, it seems like a weird decision
-
is the billboard for oceanic.
maybe harold sees nothing because he wiped from his brain the image of kumar shaving his pubes in the future. -
In the book, once they reach the flashforward date, everyone gets another flashforward, so they recurr. I'd bet that in April there'll be a cliffhanger involving all new flashes.
-
I am on the fence about watching this show. It looked decent, but I needed to be swayed by the reviews. And the consensus is that it's good, but not "LOST" good. It seems to be in the same boat as "Invasion," "Daybreak," and so on. To me, it just serves as a reminder of how great & special "LOST" is. Sure, the show had the occasional standstill, but when it's great, it's one of the best, most entertaining FILMED PROGRAMS I've ever seen. That includes movies. I'd stack up the "We have to go back!" scene with some of the greatest twists I've seen in a movie. Easily. So, I probably won't be watching "Flashforward," just waiting for the final, kick-ass season of "LOST" in Jan. '10.

I was joking about the God thing, you fucking tool. Holy fuck. The fucking anti-religion whackjobs are getting as fucking stupid and obnoxious as the fucking religious whackjobs.

this is the second time in a week Ive singled out their "reviews" for their ridiculousness and inaccuracy.... first he reems community, then openly felates this crap? Someone fire him or her.

...but it can't be as bad as The Forgotten. Absolutely. Freakin'. Horrible.
Thursday is proving to be a bad night for my DVR - too many shows to try to record. I'll watch the pilot tonight, and maybe give it unitl the third episode. If it hasn't impressed by then, it's gone from the DVR forever.
BTW, I actually liked Invasion a lot. It wasn't perfect, but I would have liked to see a second season. -
They are both quite similar in personality, natch.
-
That is the ultimate problem for the series. It would be fine for a movie...but note for a ongoing series unless there was something to carry it beyond just the initial concept, or the flashes of the future. I see this show getting a huge audience to styart, and the then the audience dropping off sharply...over the coming weeks and months!!!

Herc thought Tiffani-Amber Thiessen on Funny or Die was hilariou
by tall_boy66
That's all the proof you need right there. Never trust this man's instincts on comedy. Period. you can also dredge up his "Funny People is one of the funniest movies of the year". Drama, okay, he's much better, I'll admit. But 90% of the time when it comes to The Funny, Herc should be called Hercules The WRONG!
-
His books are classic bait-and-switch jobs. Start with a neat sci-fi concept to get the suckers to buy the book, then throw any semblance of scientific logic out the window and spend every second paragraph with politically correct lectures on the importance of being a "progressive".
I'm surprised it's taken this long for Hollywood to embrace the guy. He should fit right in at cocktail parties with George Clooney, Martin Sheen and Susan Sarandon. -
...that is how McFarlane fucking talks. Let's hear your voice.
-
How was it explained it in the book?
If everyone sees their own futures and then are taken back to the past again this will obviously totally change the futures of all those people. The experiences they have during those 2 minutes when it eventually occurs in real-time will bear no resemblance to the original flashes. If for exmaple you saw yourself get hideously injured in a car crash in your flash then you obviously arent going to get into a car on the day its going to take place are you? Was anyone in the flash aware that the flash was about to take place - since they all know 2 months previously thats its coming. World governments would prepare for the time of the flash by banning any type of dangerous activity like driving during the 2 minutes. As Herc points out it makes no sense and the only possible explanation is that we're watching the characters in a branched timeline in which case the flashes are a bit pointless since they cant happen that way anymore. -

My Review that I sent to AICN. I saw this in NYC last night
by toughguyrizzo
Hey all,
I just got in from a screening of the pilot in NYC. The NYTVF had a full day event of different shows and as a co-organizer of the NYC LOST meetup group, we were offered a bunch of tickets to see Flashforward, Sept 23rd.
Helping the atmosphere was the awesome serving of free beer at the lounge, which we were mostly 2 fisted the entire night. Hey, recession, free beer? No-brainer. But the crowd was fun and loose. Lots of Sci-Fi and LOST fans. I think we got 30 NYC Losties in our section.
Ok, if anyone hasn't seen the 17 minute preview on ABC, it starts out with the actual event of people blacking out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds. The only 2 similarities to LOST is that FF's pilot opens to mass-hysteria and also that there's a Oceanic Airlines billboard advertisement on the side of a building after John Cho is taking surveillance pictures.
The rest of the episode is retracing the minutes up until the blackout, then the rest pieces together the main characters dealing/coping with it. It's crazy most of the day, but it's not the end of the world.
The FBI soon starts to realize many of their flashforwards have pieces/visions in common. They get the ball rolling and start to organize all the agents that shared something in common, and form a division devoted to it.
An interesting note is that people in different time zones saw farther into the future, (but only by hours) than people in LA.
BTW, everyone that spoke of a vision said they saw the same date of April 20th, 2010.
Also, John Cho does not share what he saw and claims to not have had a vision.
Joseph Fiennes, (who we joked was Richard Alpert) an FBI agent, also John Cho's partner, begins an investigation based on his own vision, which looks like it will involve discovering the cause of the worldwide blackout.
BTW, Seth MacFarlane makes a cameo as an FBI agent. No voices, but just damn funny to see him. Lots of Stewie and Giggity chants!
No appearance by Dominic Monaghan this ep. Didn't see a preview for next week either.
They basically showed the major event, did some character building and set up some interesting stuff. Everyone there from my group enjoyed it and we gave it great reviews.
How's it end spoiler boy?
Who from an FBI agent's vision wears a ski mask at a Detroit Tigers game? (And doesn't blackout?)
I'm Toughguyrizzo from the talkbacks.
Thanx if you have time to use this!
Nope, they already had a report set, so no worries, but a good reaction from the crowd. Shit, im sure the free beer helped a bit, but it was actually good. -
reviewer, but to not recognize the hilariousness of Family Guy is strike one. To bring it in to a review of an unrelated show is strike two. And then to refuse to believe that's his voice?
Maybe you should flashfoward to some decent reviews... -
Cause that's major heat. And why would you write about shit you dont know. Seth's normal voice IS Brian's (the dog). Damn dude. Regardless of Seth, he was in it for maybe 3 minutes and had 2 lines maybe? What was the fuckin distraction?
-
Farlane. Wireless keyboard.
-
glom onto one tiny tidbit, like the very presence of macfarlane (how DARE he exist!) and blow it the fuck out of proportion during a poorly written review that amounts to little more than "this show is flawed because they didn't let me write it". the characters seem to catch on pretty fucking fast to a mindbender of a concept, and the way they figure out it's real (tiny spoiler warning, the phone call to britain) is a nice little reveal.
-
Fuck you. He's funny. Get over yourself.
-
I'm sayin' Seth was in it for like a 3 minute span/scene. Ok, he was probably on screen a TOTAL of 10 seconds. Really, no joke.
-
I don't know anything about this show, but what paradox is he talking about regarding the flash forwards and stock markets?
-
who fucked around and talked shit all period in high school english class was. A little funny and little annoying.
-
...the changes that people attempt to male to avoid the future will ultimately and ironically lead to said future.
Of course, the show is entirely allowed to establish its own rules as long as it's convincing and consistent (unlike, say, Heroes, which tries to have it both ways). -
oh, i know, i've seen the episode, because in my flashforward to april 2010 i was watching a rerun of it. and i know he's only in it a tiny bit, and seems perfectly fine, yet herc gets his panties in a knot over that very indiscretion. i wasn't talking about anything about your review (though i think everyone was seeing the exact same point in time, which was different in different timezones), it was about herc's typically useless attempt at a review.
-
Attempt to "male" is something completely different.
-
I didnt mean to sound like I was flaming you. All good.
-
Heres my thoughts. http://mosaiccollective.blogspot.com/
-
Many have said that Flash Forward is the next Lost, well after watching the first episode for an ABC House test screening at the D23 Disney Convention I would go as far as to say that it is Lost, literally. Flash Forward borrows quite a bit from the Lost pilot, but it does so with a lot of skill and runs in its own direction.
Both start off with major catastrophes, in Lost 815 crashes and in Flash Forward theres a major Blackout with the effects of all vehicles being unmanned for over 2 minutes. When 815 crashed Gary Tropp got sucked into an engine turbine and during the blackout a guy runs out of a car and runs around on fire. Just like Lost, Flash Forward uses each characters blackout dream to tell more about them. But while Flash Forward copies Lost it has found a way to ramp things up to a level that Lost hasn't really reached, the effects of the Blackout are global rather then just confined to the island.
The cast is great with Joseph Fiennes as Mark Benford who plays an FBI agent whose vision helps him become head of the investigation of this occurrence. Sonya Walger as Olivia Benford , both her vision and her husbands have elements that seem to be a ticking time bomb for their marriage. Olivia is a doctor. John Cho as Demetri Noh is Marks partner and didn't have a vision so thinks that he will die. There are so many other great characters also like Marks AA sponsor, another doctor who wants to end his life and ends up having a vision of a happy life and many more.
Flash Forward could prove me wrong and just go downhill from here, but its off to an awesome start and its my opinion that it has the potential to take Lost's place after Lost has ended. One promising thing is that the creators has said they have learned from the mistake of Lost not revealing whats in the hatch and has promised that we will learn what the blackout really is IN the season 1 finale. Also keep an eye out in the background for a huge Oceanic Airlines billboard. That happens after a fun car chase. -
That can work for a single story but its going to be a tough sell to explain away 6 billion of them like that id think.
Im going to watch it here in a few mins but ill be looking to see if anyone was expecting the flash to happen when it takes place as they all obviously knew and should have been prepared.
Like you say tho its mainly about the shows own internal rules and ill happily let slide inconsistencies if its still fun. -
...from what I gleaned, since I didn't finish reading it: It has to do with quantum physics. Remember, the people in Flashforward don't visit the future, they merely observe it. In quantum physics when you observe an event, you change the event. So by observing the future, they've changed the future. Which is why the future might not happen exactly the way they observed it.
-

Which means, a really funny gag they SHOULD have done...
by royston lodge
... in the premiere would be to have a character's premonition involve a cat in a sealed box.
-
observation changing an event is not a quantum physics phenomenon, it's simply a normal scientific premise.
and when you're talking about time travel, which is not currently possible, we can all agree, the whole deal is pretty speculative. -
I didn't write the damned book.
-
and the show isnt that bad, a tad slow perhaps, but the characters are engaging enough. My concern is brandon braga, he';s done some fine on star trek but completely drove it into the ground. his pilot for threshold i think held a lot of promise but it quickly went into a by the numbers story with no hook.
i hope for his sake this doesn't turn into shit as it could do very quickly we need twists and turns asap and a proper framework for the season with no reactive filler crap. i need my lost replacement lined up and ready! -
WTF is he doing there? Go back to your 3 other TV shows, asshat.
-
So Olivia/Penny has a child, this time a daughter, named Charlie? Is this deliberate just to give us insider chuckles?
-
Seth is in the fuckin show for 10 seconds of screen time. HOW is he a distraction?
-
Jeezzz he's a cool guy why the hate? Anyway Personally I liked it

Isn't Robot Chicken supposed to be some good show?

I've been trying my damndest to get the joke for a solid 3 minutes. Please just spell it out for me.

-
Herc I feel the same way. That obvious no talent hack DOES have an annoying voice. I don't give two shits if it's real or not-it's annoying. Some people DO have annoying voices-get over it.
-
It appears that the flashforwards take place in a timeline where the flashforwards happen. That is, the lead character flashes to a point where he is investigating the causes of the flashforward.
Given that, everyone would know exactly when the flashforward was going to take place. So you could wait 6 months, then write a note to yourself in the past, and be looking at it when the flash-forward moment came about.
Your past self would then see you, reading a note to yourself.
The note could be anything. Stocks to buy. AIDS infected whore not to fuck. Whatever. -
He is referring to Schroedingers Cat, a thought experiment by Erwin Schroedinger to show the absurdity of quantum physics on the real world scale.
Imagine a cat in a box. Also in the box is a jar of poison, which will break if a particular radioactive atom decays or not.
According to quantum physics, you can't predict if decay happens. You can only give probabilities. And the particle exists in both states simultaneously. Which means the cat is both alive and dead at the same time, until someone opens the box, observes the cat, and the probability waveform collapses into either dead or alive.
Quantum physics is weirder than we can understand. -
Start was good, sagged in the middle, and kinda recovered by the end. As long as they don't end up on an island colony with hippies, or have Jesus shows up as Jordan Collier, I'll try to see it through. Seeing Chah-lee as a baddie might be fun.
-
Seems no one else mentioned that it said
"Perfect Safety Record"
815 didn't crash. -
And yet NOBODY names why they specifically dislike him. EVEN Herc.
That's like saying "nah, bro, I hate sushi. Have you ever had it for dinner? Well, no, but, uh..Well I just dont like it."
Thats a haters reply to MacFarlane. Anyone of you dudes name a specific thing that you dont like without saying he's just pretentious or annoying. Cause THAT does not ruin a show. FF is pretty fuckin good retards.
Herc, is an industry thing? Did Seth snub you guys at some point? Call you fanboys or some shit? Wheres the hate coming from?

I fell asleep before the end (late-night time-slip), but thought it was only interesting to see what they would rip-off next from LOST. I guess there has been far worse pilots, but I hate being told how good something is before it's actually aired...like, hype from the network, not reviews. It's like that Glee show - for weeks we had ads leading up to the premiere that said it was the hottest new show on TV, and I'm like WTF it hasn't even aired yet! Fuck you, I'm not watching bitches. When I watched the Lost premiere, I had no idea what to expect and got my ass handed to me by one of the best pilots I think has been ever made. I was hooked from the start, and I can't say that about FlashForward which just seems like a weak attempt to grab Lost's audience before it comes back. Meh.

How about this for a FlashForward drinking game: Take a shot every time Joe angstily stares into the distance slightly to one side of the camera.

You have to read about what a great writer he is to write this great story that is great and that is why he is a great writer.
