CBS’ NCIS/NCIS/WIFE Combo Dominates!! MELROSE Dips 20%!! JAY LENO Still Bottom-Feeding!! Tuesday Ratings!!

Published at:  Sep 24, 2009 6:01:30 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

All the big Tuesday night shows came on line last night, so it’s a good time to stare at those 18-49 ratings:

4.8 NCIS
4.4 NCIS Los Angeles
3.5 Dancing With The Stars
3.2 Hell’s Kitchen
3.1 The Good Wife
3.1 The Biggest Loser
2.6 The Forgotten
2.5 The Jay Leno Show
1.0 90210
0.8 Melrose Place

* CBS had its most-watched premiere-week Tuesday since 1993, according to the Hollywood Reporter’s James Hibberd.

* For the second day in a row “The Jay Leno Show” was the lowest-rated primetime show among the big-four networks, though it was up from Monday (thanks probably to lead-in “Biggest Loser” pulling a better number than “Heroes”).

* Mac Mackenzie > Sydney Andrews. “90210” pulled 2 million total viewers last night. “Melrose Place” pulled in 1.4 million viewers, down 20% from its already-weak opening. The final season of the CW’s “Veronica Mars” averaged 2.5 million viewers three seasons back. (The CW just announced they’ve backed up the Brink’s truck to hire Heather Locklear to guest on an upcoming “Melrose.”)

Find all James Hibberd’s report on Tuesday night’s ratings here.

    Figured Leno Would flop

    by boynamedsue

I could understand his show being on prime time one night a week, sort of like Ed Sullivan's old show.........but FIVE NIGHTS A WEEK IS EXCESSIVE for prime time!!!!

    It's immaterial

    by the mcpoyle clan

I'm not the biggest Leno fan, and I hate the potential effects his show has on scripted programming, but this continual spin about his ratings is immaterial as long as NBC can profit from his show. And from what the ad men are saying so far, NBC has nothing to worry about.

NCIS - Strong characters in an entertaining show

    by dellsdontbounce

Seeing how Tony is such a film geek, it was great seeing him going all "True Lies"-y on the terrorist while under truth serum. Best line of the night "Remember when I told you my boss was a sniper?" Blam! Great TV!

    Leno's ratings are strong enough

    by useridgoeshere

Leno will still be really profitable, even if it hangs around the 1.8 it got on Monday. Plus, Leno has an easier time integrating promotions and sponsorships into his show than a scripted series. That's huge for profitability, thanks to TiVo. NCIS has no shot to do that organically.

    Agreed on NCIS

    by djjester

All the Law and Orders, CSI, etc they're all the same 'formula' as NCIS but where NCIS stands out (like the original CSI) is the characters are fantastic. There isn't a character on that show I don't enjoy watching. I havn't checked out LA yet (will watch it online soon) but the glimpse we got last season of them showed promise but like most sequels.. the second one usually sucks *cough CSI Miami cough*

My 10 p.m. local news could have better ratings...

    by spyguy

...and they'll still keep Leno around. He's like a cockroach juiced up on super-soldier serum and JUST WON'T DIE.

There seems to be a lot of Leno defenders

    by i_max_u_mini

But that's neither here nor there. NCIS is entertaining with the best series long character development on television.

    RE: NCIS

    by nekros

this show is fun to watch, it harkens back to 80's action dramas. this and burn notice are great shows, great characters who can be bad ass(when Gibbs is standing in silloette with the rifle and the camo that is just awesome) FUN interaction between characters and good story telling,

    NCIS >>>>>> NCIS:LA so far

    by centilope

The pilot was rather pedestrian, nothing to write home about. O'Donnell,LL Cool J, and especially Linda Hunt could carry the show, but the rest of the team needs to be replaced either way.

    Used to watch NCIS...

    by ciroslive

but there was never any arc with Gibbs. He just an asshole all the time. Also Dinozo never stood up for himself and hit Gibbs back. I know Gibbs is supposed to be a badass but if my boss slapped me all the time, I would either tell him to stop or I would have quit. never really saw any progression so I stopped watching...

Why no mention of Sons of Anarchy?

    by jack burton

After that stellar debut, where was it this week in the ratings? I'd like to make sure the best crime drama currently on television is going to be around a while.

Good to see some kind of scripted something

    by gotilk

beating reality TV of any kind, even though I did kind of find myself giving Amazing Race a chance and actually enjoying it. But I'm still very ant-reality tv and anti-Leno at 10pm. I don't want the *man* to fail, I just want the 10pm slot back to more adult themed scripted TV on NBC. I don't know how well Conan is doing, but the show has improved a LOT since the premiere week.

    Not a fan of NCIS, but . . .

    by royston lodge

. . . not because it's a BAD show. Just cuz the characters don't do it for me. I can see how other folk would enjoy it though.
Personally, I think the characters on Criminal Minds are more interesting, but I know other folk disagree.
The real point is that there are SO MANY SHOWS out there that follow the exact same formula, it seems silly for networks to keep putting out more from the same cookie cutter.
Final point: JAG was better than NCIS. Bring back JAG.

BoyNamedSue: Interesting point about Ed Sullivan...

    by royston lodge

Last night when I watched about 5 minutes of Leno, I couldn't help but think that some of the camera angles and aspects of the set were very reminiscent of Ed Sullivan.

Leno should go 2 days a week

    by just_some_guy

Leno woul be better 2 days a week, like a Tuesday and Friday. 5 days is too much.

BTW: Are his numbers higher or lower than his original 11:30, Tonight Show ratings?

NBC is on the right track with LENO

    by paulloch

CBS is losing money despite having the highest rated reality shows, late night shows, sitcoms, and drama shows on TV. They are very close to bankruptcy (according to Yahoo, one of the top 10 bankruptcy watch). Ad revenues are way down, not enough to cover costs, much less make profits. NBC needed to do the LENO move, just for profitablity sake
