Lots of info on TRUE LIES 2 and Harry's excursion at LIGHTSTORM!
This latest trip to Los Angeles was quite fruitful. Not only did I manage to see END OF
DAYS. Not only did Moriarty and I become Regional Managers of Burger King and
attend their product tie in meeting concerning CHICKEN RUN. Not only did a 7 foot
Walrus give us tickets to see AMERICAN BEAUTY.... But I managed to gain admittance
to the first floor of LIGHTSTORM.
Now.... Sure.... One may think that there is a high level of security. That someone as
plainly obvious as Harry Knowles (nearly 300lbs of bright technicolor red and pink human
flesh) could do much of anything.
Well, waving high at the guard, I took the first immediate right and entered the waiting
room for Lightstorm’s Screening room. There was popcorn, sodas and mineral water. On
the walls in two frames hung gorgeous original promotional material for the 1934 Cecil B
DeMille CLEOPATRA featuring a gorgeous Claudette Colbert. I’ve always prefered this
version over the Elizabeth Taylor version.
I was told that I had only about 20 minutes before the secret society gathered in this room,
so I had to be quick.
Using a tibetan chant I learned from Marvel Comics’ DR STRANGE, I left my body and
astral projected myself up two floors to where all the goodies were. I walked past the full
size Terminator Endo-Skeleton, past the Queen Alien Macquette, past the various ILM
sculptures of the water tenticle from The ABYSS and through the glass wall and all the
sensors guarding James Cameron’s office. What a beautiful desk. I want that Terminator
forearm, but I could only take it’s astral residue... and only my spirit self can behold it.
So instead I began reading through papers attempting to learn everything I could about
TRUE LIES 2 so I could shut AB KING up when I got back to Geek Headquarters.
First I learned that in April of 1998 the legal issues the dealt with Universal Pictures and
TRUE LIES were resolved and this is when Cameron and his company first started
working on TRUE LIES 2. Soon as the company decided on this Cameron had a light
bulb go off over his head and contacted all of the original cast members and inquired about
their decisions to participate or not.
Some time passed. A lot of time, and Jim’s idea began to wither. So relatively recently, in
terms of geologic time anyway, Cameron decides to hear pitches from outside writers.
The development people at Lightstorm apparently set about locating these candidates and
found only 3 serious ideas to consider. There was one that sounded to me a bit like the
old Spencer Tracy FATHER OF THE BRIDE mixed with a Roger Moore Bond film....
That wasn’t the one they went with.
Well a few weeks ago, the Lightstorm staff met with the final TRUE LIES 2 nominee for
screenwriting... a Jeff Eastin. A quick scan of the materials illuminated me as to who this
Jeff Eastin was. Nothing has been produced yet to the end, so we haven’t anything to
really judge him by, but apparently he wrote a script called FREELANCER that got him
noticed in the biz. Mark Canton (producer of JACK FROST) is producing his LOVE
CRAZY at Warners, and is about a man trying to get his wife back after she’s convinced
of an affair.... hmmmm sound familiar folks? Well, ol Neil Moritz (producer of I KNOW
WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER) signed him up with a project called
INCONVENIENCED that is set about in Arizona. And the guy has a TV show he
co-created called SHASTA MCNASTY which will be airing this fall.
Hmmmm... So this fella seems to be hot.
But where the hell is the meat.... My eyes scanning, tossing the script for FREELANCER
out of my way. AHA! Here we go... The dirt.
The synopsis starts off with a Tagline as created by Jeff.
“Trust is the Foundation of any Good Marriage”
I wish I had more time to go through this stuff, but... Well I’ll give it my best shot. Now
the what I’m about to discuss won’t necessarily be in the movie... But it was a bit of the
pitch that got Jeff the job. It seems that Harry and Helen are having problems... ‘BIG
SURPRISE’.
Now that the secret is out of the bag and Helen is working with Harry all the time (I guess
she’s had some training since the last time, cause I certainly wouldn’t take that Spaz out
on any missions), Helen feels that work takes precedence over their marriage in Harry’s
eyes. .
Meanwhile, they are crossing the chunnel on one of them nifty Chunnel trains. Apparently
there is some biochemist character that has invented some deadly biological weapon and
there seems to be some wrong hands that want to procure it. Harry and Helen have to
stop that and protect the good Doctor.
There seems to be some sort of terrorist group that blows the two entrances of the
Chunnel and begin flooding it. To make a long story short, they completely botch the job
and lose the Dr and possibly have doomed the world. It seems that some strange Chinese
Communist group is out to obtain the Dr’s work and hold the world in terror.
Tom Arnold has been doing his usual nosing around Harry and Helen’s life and seems to
find out evidence that points that Helen may very well be being turned into a double agent
for some sort of Eastern European agency.
This of course sets of an inner paranoia inside of Harry. And his ultra-keen powers of
observation begin watching for the slightest chance that she is out to... do him in. Afterall
she has been irritable towards him, etc.
Meanwhile, they must work together to get this Doctor back along with his secrets... all
the while, Harry doesn’t trust Helen and is always on pens and needles believing that at
any second she’ll draw a bead on him and kill him.
Unfortunately I only got about 3 pages into the pitch before I felt someone nearing my
body down below and had to return, but from what I saw I liked it. It sounded like a
good strong premise and a fun take on the characters. I noticed as flipping through the
pages that Harry has to move in with Tom Arnold’s character and a couple of other tidbits
that caused a smile or two, like a serenade that Arnold must do to try and when Jamie
back. Arnold can sing? This is going to be interesting.
Well, I see that Variety beat me to the screenwriter’s name... But... heh heh heh.... I know
more about the project. From here, Jeff must finish up a draft, and I imagine that the
earliest this movie will be shot will be after Arnold does the Frank Darabont/Chuck
Russell DOC SAVAGE.... So at the earliest I imagine this film will come at some point
2002, unless they flip flop.
So there ya go. A big scoop not involving Chickens!

Well, It disgusts me to say this but t looks like I'M first...
Script looks kickass so far... -
Well, True Lies 2 might just be worth seven bucks. As for that Dr. Strange astral projection trick... c'mon, everyone knows how to do that one, Harry. Try something a little more original, like that cool invisibility outfit from "Ghost in the Shell," an "eh" anime movie with kick-ass animations and hella cool gadgets. Or even better... change yourself into a spirit-thing like that guy in "Big Trouble in Little China" and walk through a wall!
-
We really don't need another True Lies, really. Why, out of all of Cameron's movies (save maybe that boat movie), does he think that he can do these characters justice by telling another of their stories? I would be much more interested to see more about the "aliens" from The Abyss. And speaking of aliens, could I finance a movie in which the carcass of the Titanic comes to rest on that huge undersea city from The Abyss, and the "aliens" utilize several different forms of plasma based weaponry to pulverize the remains of the ship? and Leo? and maybe Jar Jar for good measure? and while they're at it, maybe all personnel involved with Alien 3? Ok, I've got some anger management issues, I'll go take a nap.
-
If I were as skinny as the girl in GHOST IN THE SHELL... I might be able to afford one of those outfits, but in my size... they are prohibitively expensive. Besides, it wouldn't allow me to get past the card key access pads. As for the Lo Pan trick.... It would be visible to the cameras and I can't let that happen, lest my time alotment become compromised. For this particular mission, it was instrumental to Doc Strange out.
-
Why, Why, Why ?
I want to see something different.
I didn't think the first True Lies was great, there were some obvious mistakes in that one.
I didn't hate it, enjoyable but not great.
-
Harry said it sounded promising to him, can't say I feel the same. I know that only the first few pages were read, but it sounded to me more like a cheap sit-com to me. "THE NEW ODD COUPLE" Arnold, the big neat and tidy perfectionist, moves in with Tom, the short fat slob, as Jamie, his superspy wife has thrown him out of their home, because he thinks she's sleeping with and Iranian terrorist! Hilarity ensues!!!!! (I think not) It doesn't seem to be an action movie like the first, more like a dumb comedy with a few action scenes thrown in to prove that it is a True Lies film. BTW didn't they do this story line in the first one? You know Harry thinking Helen was having an affair? That was funny, but only cause they played it for only a third of the film. Now it looks like the are going to play for the same laughs but make it last the whole film. I hope I'm wrong as I loved the first film, but I haven't heard anything that excites me the least bit what so ever.
-
Cameron's gift is in story flow and structure ( dialogue not his crowning virtue). When I saw TRUE LIES, I was disappointed by the potential wasted (what if Bill Paxton turned out to actually be a spy? And a super cool one at that? What if the whole family was on the harrier jet?). The story never completed clicked because the seperate elements working working against rather than with each other. The story clicked into gear when Jamie Lee was brought into the action... but then they took her out of the entire last sequence!!! But I always saw where the story could go and this sounds like it.
Me excited.
Harry, while you were in LA, did you check out the Samuel French bookstore on Sunset? You -
I find this assertion a little hard to swallow. Granted, T2 is damn near perfect, but for me, watching The Abyss and True Lies is like flippin' channels (especially The Abyss). Neither one sinks to the level of The Rock, but they come close.
-
You may not agree with his stylistic choices, but the guy is a hell of a storyteller. I personally remain in awe of the way he fused the REAL timeframe of Titanic's sinking with the FABRICATED story of Jack and Rose. Im am an obsessive Titanic buff (the real tragedy) and the man did a minute-by-minute, perfectly realized structure to superimpose over, not only the timeframe of the sinking, but the geography of it (the level-flooding is accurate to a T), you tell me if that's not a feat of structuring genius.
-
I loved the first True Lies, everyone was great & brillant in it. I don't really see how they would make another one, but I still would like to see it. But I pray that this just remains scoop, that just sounded lame what they said. I want everyone back on board including Eliza Dushku who played his daughter in the first, she has gone on to develop into a major hottie. She was Faith in TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

What I'd really like to know is, why is there an ad for "Love Stinks" on this site?

Harry, True lies 2 would be 2001 summer; Doc Savage 2000 Novembe
by abking
Harry, how in the world do you figure TRUE LIES 2 would come out 2002??? Cameron has a film slated for 2001 summer and he has all the time in the world before next June to start filming TRUE LIES 2. Also, DOC SAVAGE should end up coming out 2000 November after Arnold does THE SIXTH DAY for summer 2000. Arnold has enough time to film two films for next year. Anyway, GREAT scoop and keep up the great work at getting more info on TRUE LIES 2.
-
to match the subtley of TRUE LIES, i'm hoping there's a scene with some squinty eyed asians who shuffle about menacingly while ahnold's wife is again threatened with rape from her husband while the other fascist arnold bullies everybody in his path and they make a pathetic character piss his pants. if the second one has all those wonderful elements that made the first one so memorable to frustrated little boys, then it will kick ass!! gee, i wish it was 1985 again...
-
Remember the rumor that said Harry and Helen go to Russia and there were the Russian Mafia that they have to fight or something. I guess that was a big rumor or an earlier draft. Anyways, this new draft sounds good and should KICK ASS like the first film.
-
Even though I'll probably get flamed for this, I (as well as many others) had some problems with the portrayal of a certain ethnic group in True Lies. Anyone else worried about the possible portrayal of the Chinese if this version of True Lies 2 comes to fruition?
-
I would rather see somthing new!
-
True Lies was fucking goofy.
A sequel could only be twice as goofy.
-
... why do they have to make a sequel to this one? I mean, excluding Phirana 2, it's probably his worst film. Poorly constructed, poorly written and awfully sexist, especially from the man who wrote some of the best female characters ever in big-budget movies. The only thing it had going for it was a great horse-and-motorcycle chase sequence and a riveting last quarter-hour (unless, of course, you're big fans of Arnie one-liners, in which case I feel sorry for you). I have a great idea for Jim's next film - something completely original. Can you guys handle that?
-
Okay, so maybe the invisibility outfit and the Lo Pan trick wouldn't work. I'm sorry; you are, after all, the Head Geek. By the way, did you ever get my letter concerning Project A-ko, the unbelievably cool '80s anime flick that makes fun of all other '80s anime flicks? If you didn't, then allow me to say, *SEE PROJECT A-KO!* There. That's my only statement for the day. Aside from the fact that I want T3 more than TL2... but we can't have everything.
-
If you can, find Abyss' novelization. It's done by *Orson Scott Card*, the uber-cool writer of Ender's Game and a zillion other great books. Speaking of Ender's Game... I really want a movie of that. Maybe they could get the kid from Sixth Sense, or even the one from Searching for Bobby Fischer (How old is he now? When was that made?). But please, no Jake Lloyd. Please.
-
What goes around comes around. Seems to be in fashion these days to bash Cameron. Well, I'm not ashamed to say he is my favorite filmmaker. I really don't care what kind of speech he gives (he just won Best Director, why wouldn't he feel like the King of the World. What would you say? 'I'd like to thank a whole bunch of people that nobody has ever heard of.'), the man conceives great movies. Even his weakest, True Lies IMO, is better than a lot of other directors' best. Love 'em or hate 'em, he has given us epic love stories (The Abyss and Titanic) and balls to the wall hardware flicks (Aliens and Terminator). My favs:
1. Aliens - Great film.
2. The Abyss - In my mind, the theatrical version doesn't exist. The Director's Cut on LaserDisc is the real film. Solidly acted, from the one and only Ed Harris right down to Chris Elliot. Cameron is excellent at giving us ensemble characters that feel real.
3. The Terminator films
4. Titanic
5. True Lies - Sure it's fun (btw, let Cameron do a Bond movie!), but I don't feel it's as much as an experience as the others. -
I think Bill Paxton should retunr in True Lies 2, maybe not as a star, but at least a cameo or something. After all, him and Tom Arnold were the best charecters in the movie, (no disrespect to Arnold or Jamie Lee).
-
Why not spend all the money on something else? This sequel stinks just as much as the first movie did...
-
I hope we see: Arnold's daughter (what is her name?), Charlton Heston, Bill Paxton, and Grant Heslov (Fisle, the Arab partner that worked with Tom Arnold). Am I forgeting anyone in the TRUE LIES universe? I wonder who will be the bad ass terrorist's this time.

IF ANYBODY FROM LIGHTSTORM IS READING THIS, I HAVE THE PERFECT I
by el duderino
Okay... get this!! Helen Tasker... the wife... will turn out to be a FemBot and Harry will have to kill her. He'll be sad, but then he'll realize that he's a bachelor again and he goes on a shagging... wait.. oh yeah, this was already used in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and it sure didn't fix things up in the story.
-
Since that other thing didn't work.... get this!! The story... based on the original True Lies... will actually turn out to be a prequel about Harry... the spy husband.... okay... yeah... and... get this.... he'll be played by... you'll never guess it... LEONARDO DICAPRIO!!! Killer huh.... and listen to this.... he'll also play all of the villians... and it will take place on a doomed ship donned unsinkable. Just toss that idea around the office....
-
Umm, KS, I think your comments are rebuttals to mine. True, the internet didn't exist back then, but the internet didn't give birth to people offering opinions on movies. When Terminator and T2 came out, I remember them being very popular; I can't remember anyone not liking them (and I associate with people of many tastes). That's not to say, of course, that there aren't people on this earth that do not like those films...we're talking in generalities. Even trade mags praised the then-unknown Cameron for making such a powerful film (Terminator) on a shoestring budget. I'm not sure what your T2 references mean (T2 = movie of the week?), but it seems you don't feel Aliens belongs in the franchise. Hmm, okay. I guess you can call Aliens an 'action' movie, but in the 240 minute version, how much actual screentime is dedicated to action? About 30 minutes. The rest is setup, character interaction, and tension. If you wanted the Alien series to go in a different direction, that's fine, but that doesn't take away from Cameron's execution. And it seems you oppose to having marital problems as the source of dramatic tension in a story. Again, your preference, but again, that doesn't take away from The Abyss' humanity. I don't think there is a writer out there who doesn't draw at least a little from their own experiences; The Abyss may have even been Cameron's lamentation for the way he handles his own relationships. He may wish to be more like Bud Brigman. Anyway, I admire Cameron's work ethic and passion. He may demand %100 from his crew, but he gives %110 (watch the making of The Abyss).
-
I will also gladly admit that James Cameron is my favorite current director. He gets a lot of flak, and I think I know why - STAR WARS DIDN'T TOP TITANIC!!! He he. You KNOW that's why. Anyway, I did like True Lies a lot. It's far from his weakest film. I would have to put Abyss in that spot. Go ahead, flame me. But I only felt the need to see it once, and the special edition director's cut whatever, well, that was BORE-ING!!!!! Ok, I've never seen Pirahna 2. But I'd like to. Even though the studio re-edited it on him. From what I hear, he broke in and tried editing it back HIS way. Go James! ANYWAY! My point is, I have complete faith in Jim. He's never let us down. Never. Can you think of any other director that can make 6 (not counting Piranha) films in a row without dissappointing? I mean, I don't care for Abyss, but a lot of people love it, so it succeeded. And he's made 'the most expensive movie ever' 3 times in a row and CAME IN BLACK EACH TIME. Heck, the average movie can't do that. Also, believe it or not, I think True Lies is the best 'family values' film ever. It involves someone with a family, and their job, and the way his job affects his life. It's very relevant, in an extreme way. I actually find it very powerful when Harry's daughter, Eliza Duskha (sp?) gets kidnapped, and Harry has to be the Ultimate Parent, and get her back! It actually sends chills up my spine, she's yelling "Someone help me! Please! Help me!" and then her 'boring, lame' DAD comes to save her! What devotion! How after so much ignoring his family he now has to save it! That's 10 times better than all the Mel Gibson "You killed my wife/son/dog so I'm gonna kill YOU" shit that I see. Yup, I DID just say that I like True Lies better than Braveheart. But hey, did they shoot anyone on missles in Braveheart? PS. I have so much faith in Cameron, I KNOW Bill Paxton will be back in TL2. Heck, he's in every Cameron movie anyway.
-
will The Man return? sheesh 2002 would make him a pretty old Heston if this movie gets made...
--McK -
flaming cameron has nothing to do with his technical skill--he's obviously in total control of the medium. what he chooses to control, however...'true lies' is a vicious, mean-spirited, bully movie. it's for those who get their kicks at watching COPS--or for those who were picked on and feel that the sight of the fascists played by the two arnolds are cool. bring bill paxton back? for what? to pee his pants?
-
Eliza Dushku played Arnold & jamie lee's daughter in the first movie. It would cool if she came back and she somehow got involved with the bad guys.
-
but the rarity of a sequel that is as good, or even better than the first part is so unusual, that there is no way we can trust in this sequel. TRUE LIES is a very good and entertaining movie, but things ended just right and there is no need to change them. A disaster like THE FRENCH CONNECTION 2 or THE KARATE KID 2 could happen, I think. Anyway, if Cameron and Schwarzenegger join forces, it can't be that bad, but unless they come with something like THE TERMINATOR 2, Cameron better work in another TITANIC-like project. Anyone interested in visiting my homepage, type http://go.to/gmdb (Gon's Movie Database). -Gon.
-
You saw it here first!!! Http://members.tripod.com/~blthomps/Lookfirst.mpg
-
Imagine the great plot twists Cameron will come up with in TL2. I really hope Bill Paxton is in it. Cameron can use him to great effect. I really want to see some bad ass villians like the Arab bad asses in the first film. I hope Cameron makes Helen Tasker into a tough as nails killer like he did with Linda Hamilton in T2. Remember, Cameron is known as the master of making sequels, especially BIGGER and BETTER than before. Expect never seen stunts and action when TRUE LIES 2 hits summer screens in 2001. "May I see your invitation"? "Sure, here's my invitation"--BOOM!!!
-
... James Cameron did actually not make Piranha 2. He was fired after two weeks!!! So do not refer to it as a "Cameron-Movie". By the way, TL 2 should be as great as the first one, and if not, just entertaining. Since Actionmovies went down the toilet after the 80s (come on, you don't want to compare for example CON AIR with RED HEAT), I can't wait for any new Schwarzenegger-film.
-
Cameron instead of making another True Lies(his worst film), should really be making With Wings as Eagles with Arnie. Firstly it is an original, secondly it will be a new genre for Cameron ie World War II. Thirdly it is an absolutely awesome script by Randall Wallace, which Cameron could turn into a an awesome War film. Or he should make his once favourite project Spider-Man, I mean the creator of Spider-Man no less endorsed Cameron to be the right man for the job after reading Cameron's scriptment. The directors who have been mentioned to direct Spider-Man now are prople like Ivan Reitman, Stephen Sommers, Tim Burton or Ron Howard, with the possible exception of Ron Howard, the thought of the other three directing Spider-Man makes me wanna puke. If Cameron is not directing Sipder-Man then it should be either Spielberg or Zemeckis as these 2 with cameron are the only 2 who can do justice to this project. But looks like Universal are going to ruin this dream project by handing to a complete hack. Personally I think that Spielberg should drop the much delayed Minority Report and pick up Spider-Man. I would be interested to hear other people's views on who they think is suitable to replace Cameron on Spider-Man.
-
I wish Cameron would one day direct WITH WINGS AS EAGLES. Him or Paul Verhoeven. Cameron will never direct SPIDER-MAN so you can forget it. TRUE LIES 2 is next so expect BIG action.
-
overlooking the historical innacuracies in titanic (i haven't actually seen the film) i pretty much lost any respect for cameron when he ripped off the terminator from harlan ellison. harlan ended up getting his credit, but to this day, cameron claims it as "his creation" (his reason for not doing spidey, etc.) and that annoys me to no end.
-
AB man, Cameron will never direct With Wings As Eagles, I would say that after True Lies 2, his next project will be "Avatar". By the time the cameras roll on that one, the extraordinary fx Cameron wants for this project, will be ready. As for another director for WWAE, come on man you would have to pick Wolfgang Petersen ahead of Paul Verhoeven, the movie I wanna see from Arnie and Verhoeeven is "Crusade". AB can you tell me why the hell is Arnie screwing around with movies like "End of Days" and "Sixth Day" and not working on ultra cool projects likw WWAE and Crusade with directors like Petersen and Verhoeven I mean the studios know that these movies are gonna kick ass and bring in bring in big time cash at the box office. Do you have any news on why these projects are not going ahead.
-
Litestorm, I think WWAE is searching for a director (I want Verhoeven) but Peterson would also kick ass. CRUSADE is Arnold's project so it will get made sometime soon.
-
I wonder if I can make a link here, let me see: Gon's Movie Database. Maybe I did, maybe I didn't. If I did, click on it, will ya?
-
AB you should check out the cinescape site, the address is www.cinescape.com, it has an interview with Arnie on his future projects. Next up he says is Sixth Day with Roger Spottiswoode, who made Tomorrow Never Dies, the best Bond film for a long long time. Arnie said that the scripts for Doc Savage and True Lies 2 are being written. He said that T3 is in legal mess and so is Crusade, Arnie said the Crusade script will have to be updated and then he will look for a studio but he said that Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer are interested, which is good news. Also for With Wings as Eagles, he said Frank Drabont is interested in directing this film, this last bit of news about Darabont was depressing, he did a great job on Shawshank Redemption is, I was hoping for Petersen or then Verhoeven, let me know what you think.
-
Hi Litestorm, thanks for the tip, but I also saw the Cinescape article. Jerry Bruckheimer is a major plus to CRUSADE (too bad it's in legal hell though). T3 will happen thank god, but not for now. TRUE LIES 2 is next for Cameron and Arnold so great. THE SIXTH DAY will be a kick ass sci-fi ride like TOTAL RECALL and THE MATRIX. Now regarding Darabont doing WITH WINGS AS EAGLES. This is GREAT news. WWAE is a dramatic action film and he is a GREAT dramatic director. Plus, he already worked with Arnold on ERASER (he wrote some action scenes) and will also help do DOC SAVAGE. Forget about Cameron, Verhoeven and Peterson helming WWAE, Darabont will make it a kick ass action ride.
