THOR picks up a babe and a bad guy!

Published at:  Sep 23, 2009 5:12:20 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with news of Branagh's Asgardian marvel, THOR. The Hollywood Reporter and Borys Kit are reporting that Jaimie Alexander and Colm Feore are joining Kirk's daddy as THOR, Tom Hiddleston as LOKI and Padme as Jane Foster.

The gorgeous Jamie Alexander is gonna armor up for the role of Sif, one of the fiercest and most lovely warrior women of Asgard. She has also been known to get all kissy face with Thor. A love triangle? We'll see.

Meanwhile, Marvel is being coy with who Colm Feore is playing - with Borys Kit saying, "Feore's character is shrouded in mystery" Mhm. Well, looking at Colm - he has the perfect face and bone structure to play Mephisto if they go that direction in this film. In the originally wonderful Mark Protosevich draft, this character didn't exist. But then, neither did Jane Foster. The script has changed fairly radically - mostly due to Marvel's ambitious plan to move the various Marvel franchises into a collision course with THE AVENGERS.

In addition, we have our first look at the "press release" version of the story of Thor.

The movie's story centers on Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. Once here, he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends dark forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Which sounds like a proper basic structure for a THOR film. THOR is literally my childhood favorite Marvel property. As a Harryhausen geek from birth, throughout my childhood I was convinced that one day Harryhausen would make a Thor movie. I used to tell everyone this. I was, of course, delusional, but right now - I'm extremely hopeful that Branagh knocks this out of the park.

Crap. I was hoping for "superhero LOTR".Ah well. As long as they can make Asgard not look grossly out of place in a movie dealing with Earth, I'm still looking forward to this. And I've loved Colm Feore since "Storm of the Century", so his casting makes me happy.

I love Thor the comic book character

    by continentalop

But for me this is proof they are trying to make to many super-hero movies. Everything that makes Thor great in the comics (a character that travels from the Mythic to the Cosmic with ease) will be lost in a movie, plus I can't imagine them ever being able to make us suspend disbelief in such a truly comic book character.
On a side note, I am glad the "all Asgaard" thing has been shelved. If you are going to make make the Thor from myths, than by all means set it in Asgaard; but this is the Marvel Thor, which means he is a superhero.
It would be like setting Kal-El completely on Krypton.

Pathfinder isn't Norse mythology. That is based on Viking History (a bad version, but history non-the-less). It is closer to a movie about Alexander the great than it is about Zeus or Hercules.
And Beowulf has very little to do with Norse mythology, in that it features very little (if any) interaction with the gods. Beowulf is a hero, not god (or even Demi-God in the sense that Hercules was), and I think that is what Ingeld was getting at.

    But I was just thinking

    by continentalop

Sure there has been movies about Hercules, and Perseus and Jason, but has there ever been a movie ABOUT Zeus and the other big, completely divine Greek gods? I mean, they have all guest starred or played a supporting part in movies about Greek myths, but they have never been the focus of the story (there never has been a story about the war with the Titans or Hades abducting Persephone).
So maybe Ingeld should be asking for a movie based on Siegfried or Sigmund, or Ragnor Lodbrok or something.

    Can't Be Mephisto

    by jmacq

I don't think Feore can be Mephisto...wasn't Mephisto played by Peter Fonda in the Ghost Rider movie? That'd mean the rights for Mephisto are at Columbia Pictures, wouldn't it?

Since Loki is already cast, my guess is that unless he's a voice-only role (in which case he could be darn near anyone), he looks best suited for Malekith. A "Dark Elf" (not as stupid as it sounds in this case) sorcerer that's caused trouble for Thor several times in the comics.

    by dropdead

... Does not mean they should make it into a movie. It would seem as if the studios have absolutely no clue which books can be adapted and which ones cant. Comic books are a very particular medium. Just because its a popular comic does not mean it will be a good movie... Hell just because its a amazing comic does not mean it will be a watchable movie. There are elements and characters that work fine within the realm of comic book panels but will not translate well to the screen. I'm not saying that Thor cant be made into a kick ass movie... Hell, I hope they pull it off. I am however saying that they are going to have one hell of a time making it work.

Every version of Beowulf ever? The Zemeckis abomination aside, the only version that is worth anything--and it too is seriously flawed--was the Icelandic production that few if any know about. Moreover, while Beowulf is connected to northern myth and saga, the norse gods have no role or presence in the original epic. Sure there have been viking movies--quasi historical films, but few that involve the interplay of the gods and men. The 2004 German made, Ring of the Nibelungs was not very good. Beyond that one has to go back to the silent film era. Now count how many Arthurian flicks there have been. How many about Hercules and Greek heroes?

Awesome dude - brilliant and exactly. Seriously, Thor is going to come off so strange and aggressively gay (nothing wrong with the gays, just saying) to the general movie going audience, it is going to make people wonder what all this super hero crap is about anyway. Seriously, Thor is a strange character - winged hat, big weird hammer, humorless, always shouting, dressed up for a night in the Castro - wtf? Norton made Banner more of a guy (too bad because Bana could have done it with a better script and better direction) and Stark was always cool - smart, money, cars, women, etc.. You'd get a beer with those guys. Who wants to get a beer with Thor? Thor is an angry, scowling douchebag. This movie stars a bunch of unknowns (aside from Portman, who is going to wonder why none of the guys seem interested in her about 15 minutes in...) so there is no draw there. The material is some of the least approachable in the world of comics. I love Marvel and I still think Thor is ridiculous bullshit. They should have done a Hawkeye movie, or done the Cap movie (which could be cool) and thrown in the b team (scarlet witch, quicksilver, vision, yellow jacket, hawkeye, panther - no falcon, however) as gravy for the Avengers movie. That would have made sense to me.

Harry, do you know Branaugh or anyone involved in the production well enough to make a phone call? I know it's pretty far along in the conceptual process, but I agree that Harryhausen would make an AMAZING visual and conceptual consultant. Maybe he could draw a couple of concept pictures. I'm guessing Branaugh respects the history and work of Harryhausen and his knowledge and experience with mythical subject matter, and might warm to the idea of having his ear for a few days.

They soiled the image of the Silver Surfer to make it an appealing project any time soon. As far as epic scope, and the easiest movie to fuck up, THOR is the top Marvel character in my book. My fear is that they won't just stumble on the locations and story, but fail to capture the true scope of his power. I was sickened by the weak as a kitten Thoe in "UA" direct to DVD. Hulk vs thor (DVD): hulk beat him like a child. Thor needs to be THE defacto Marvel hero. Mjolnir needs to summon storms, split mountains and be that iconic power. I am hoping for a non-watered down version of this character.

So you've got a virtual unknown playing Thor. You've got the set up love triangle with the human woman and Sif in the Princess Aura role. Throw in Brian Blessed as Odin and there you have it. Hopefully it won't be as cheesy.

    Thundersmurfs

    by boe

Yes, things have gone quiet - I too noticed that. No one wants to talk about it. There was an episode of Flava of Love like that. One of the lucky ladies vying for Flav's affection got a little agitated and, rather than go to the restroom like a grown up human being, she dropped a deuce on film in a room filled with on-lookers and then pretended not to know anything about it. It was one of those TV moments that is so sad and disappointing it actually makes you lose faith in mankind as a whole. That is kind of how I felt when I saw that big blue animated delgo thing Harry has been going on about for the last half decade. I think the best thing is just to move on and pretend it didn't happen. Eventually we will all be dead and none of the really embarrassing stuff will matter anymore.

    by ominus

World of Warcraft is heavily based on the Norse Mythology.in Lich King there is one major quest chainabout Thor,Loki and Sif.(with changed names ofc).in fact u r the one who help thor to come over his depression, ignite his warrior flame and decide to take reveng on his brother who killed his wife and manipulated him.u even repair his hammer (which throws ligthings all the time) and his armor.one of the best epic quests i have played in any rpg.

I thought the "Hulk-v-Thor" Thor was spot on (aside from the non-descript accent). Hulk is Marvel's heaviest hitter... period. Thor did his best (and it was damned impressive), but simply couldn't stand against a Bannerless, raging Hulk. Sif was badass in that toon as well. Enjoyed it much more than the Wolverine offering. I vote Malkeith for Feore as well.

My understanding of the Thor mythos was that sans hammer, Thor and hulk were supposed to be toe-toe toe equal. (Odin even depowered Thors hammer once so they may fight that way) Then, when in possession of Mjolnir, that lightning, God-essence or a powerful hit would overwhelm Hulk. I lost track of the point in which Hulk simply became too powerful altogeather.

    by thunderbolt ross

Marvel can't have copyright on the name, can they? Their version of the mythology has plenty of, er, quirks, but the names I'd imagine are public domain. Also an all-Asgard movie would have defeated the superhero aspect of it. I want to see MARVEL's Thor, not Proper Norse Mythology Thor. I mean, I'd like to see that too of course.

    by carl xvi gustaf

You gotta love Marvel's commitment to make a real Avengers movie. Someone above here asked "why a Thor movie?" Marvel could've easily picked another, "more real" hero to replace Thor in Avengers. But they stick to it. Respect Marvel for that, even if you think it's a bad idea. And there's been complaints about the other, "reality based" heroes mixing with Thor. Even from Mr Iron Man himself. Well, that's just what makes Avengers so great, and it will make the movie feel new and exciting. It's not just another movie with people in power suits or an action movie with some slight sci-fi in it. This one will go all the way baby!

    Ultimate Thor

    by miyamoto_musashi

Haven't read Ultimates, a) is it any good ? , b)what is the portrayl like for Thor ?
Basically we have Marvel's Superman (though Captain Marvel is probably a better fit) in Thor, an alien who also lives in the our world. So Branagh and the gang need to learn from the Superman movies, what works, what doesn't work etc. As I have said before there are lessons to be learnt from Iron Man and Dark Knight, but this is on a very different scale.

They kind of subscribe to the hyper realism that Bogs Down too many of the Fox Comicbook movies they feel uninspired and forced, robbing the franchise of it imagination. As far as Ultimate Thor I believe he just a human Nutjob with a super suit that thinks he's Thor the Thunder god Much like Zues The batman Villian thinks he's Zues and he's a enviromentalist if I remember correctly.

    by beane2099

If you read volume 1 and 2 you see Thor's complete story. He starts out arrogant in volume 1 and gets knocked a ton of pegs by Loki in volume 2. The bit with him praying to Odin to save him whilst laced up in a straight jacket in glass prison was cool. But I like regular Marvel Thor a little better.

    Adventures in Babysitting...

    by macready452

surprise..!..not that great. I watched this movie on steady rotation with Remo Williams as a kid. Recently went back and realized the only thing that had me hooked was Thor. At that point in time it was literally the only Marvel hero in live action so in that regard it was the greatesst thing ever. Don't for a second think that if you are old enough to NOT have a babysitter that you will want to sit through the movie though. I always thought Thor was to fantastic even for a comic book. No reality at all which removes me from connecting with the character on any level. I hope this movie does well but Branaugh is fighting an up hill battle.
