Malkovich, Walsh, and Glenn Race To Randall Wallace's SECRETARIAT!!

Published at:  Sep 22, 2009 11:58:01 AM CDT

Merrick here...

John Malkovich, Dylan Walsh, and the mighty Scott Glenn will join Diane Lane in SECRETARIAT - which is based on the true story of the race horse who won the coveted Triple Crown in 1973.

Diane Lane stars as the horse's owner Penny Tweedy, the housewife who broke though a gender barrier to usher Secretariat to greatness.

Walsh plays Lane's husband, a successful attorney who is accustomed to his wife being at his beck and call.

Malkovich plays a charismatic trainer who underestimates the power of Secretariat; Glenn is a southern-bred aristocrat who loses the horse in a coin toss.

...says The Hollywood Reporter HERE.

The film will be directed by Randall Wallace (who wrote BRAVEHEART and PEARL HARBOR, and wrote/directed WE WERE SOLDIERS), so maybe Secretariat will dodge incoming mortar fire lobbed by competitor steeds, fire side-mounted machine guns, and be slowly disemboweled/martyred to inspire future generations of race horses.

SECRETARIAT is scripted by Mike Rich, who brought us FINDING FORRESTER and Dennis Quaid's under-appreciated THE ROOKIE.

I saw an ESPN doc on Secreteriat

    by bass ackwards

I've never been into horse racing, but watching that doc's coverage of the horse just going full bore with no let up on the last race choked me up. I don't know if I'll find the people in this story that interesting, but it was a helluva horse.

    by bouncy x

maybe that wallace dude was just involved in another capacity. but when you put movie titles next to a director's name it usually means he directed them. or was this one of those instances with two directors? anyway as for this movie...yeah no.

Barbara isn't good enough for Elmers Glue

    by kraven morehead

It only won a third of the triple crown. Only 11 have won all three and Secretariat owns the record in two of those three. Long story short, his stud fees would make getting a facial from him a decent idea.

With that said, the story of Secretariat isn't all too different from Seabiscuit . . . other than the speed of the horse.

Mr. Ed played for the Dodgers, and slid into homeplate.

    by azultool

Great episode. Hell, Sandy Koufax is even it. Mr. Ed hit an inside-the-park homerun. When he slid, it looked like they took a plastic horse (or maybe even a dead horse) and just threw it across homeplate. To this day, it's the funniest thing I've ever seen.

Seabiscuit was an underdog story; Secretariat, not so much

    by feralangel

Seabiscuit was an undersized runt with sprung knees who nevertheless blew the doors off nearly every better-bred, better-looking horse he raced. Secretariat was tall, handsome, and built for speed. He was physical perfection as far as racehorses go. How do audiences identify with that?

    Its less about the horse

    by kraven morehead

and more about the horse being owned by a small time horse farm and not one of the super farms. What makes it most like Seabiscuit is that it takes place during Vietnam and Watergate and something as simple as a horse was able to get everyone's spirits up.

And though he was a super horse it had been 25 years since the last triple crown winner, which at the time was the longest drought ever and some people thought it would never be done again. It remained the longest drought until the one we have now since we haven't had a winner since '79.
