HEROES Fail!! Big Wins For HOUSE & BIG BANG!! JAY LENO SHOW Now Lowest-Rated On The Big Four!! Monday Ratings!!

Published at:  Sep 22, 2009 9:02:44 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

All the big Monday night shows came on line last night, so it’s a good time to stare at those 18-49 ratings:

6.5 House
4.6 Big Bang Theory
4.4 Two and a Half Men
4.3 CSI Miami
4.1 Dancing With The Stars
3.5 How I Met Your Mother
3.2 Accidentally On Purpose
2.7 Heroes
2.3 Castle
1.8 The Jay Leno Show
1.2 One Tree Hill
1.1 Gossip Girl

* Fans have had it with “Heroes,” which took a non-heroic distant fourth place, falling another 46% from its season-three opener.

17 million viewers: “Heroes” second-season premiere
10 million viewers: “Heroes” third-season premiere
6 million viewers: “Heroes” fourth-season premiere

* Last week “The Jay Leno Show” was the highest-rated Monday show on the big four networks. This week it was the lowest.

* “Big Bang Theory” is, at least for the moment, now TV’s top sitcom, up last night 28% from its 2008 premiere

* “House,” up 14% from its 2008 premiere, gave Fox its first-ever opening-night-of-the-fall-season win, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

* Weevil Navarro > Chuck Bass. CW darling “Gossip Girl” pulled 2.1 million total viewers last night, while the final season of the CW’s “Veronica Mars” averaged 2.5 million viewers three seasons back.

* President Barack Obama's appearance on "Letterman" drew 7 million viewers, the biggest audience for "The Late Show" since Dave and Oprah patched things up on air four years ago.

It rerally was ok and more interesting than I thought it might be. It held my interest until the end. However I think they need to sum it up this season. If they do it now that might make the final season special. If they wait........

Fairly predictable turn of events for Heroes

    by rongorongomu

The only reason a show that performs as poorly as Heroes was renewed is because it gets more viewers than a test signal.

  • HEROES. Oh how far you have fallen. You have become the new template for diminishing returns. A first season so beloved that mediocrity is tolerated to escape the growing dread that It can only get worse and doing so with consistent enthusiasm. Tim Kring: you blew it.

    Yay for House

    by wandering_prophet

As much as I hate to see FOX succeed, House is the exception. Nothing about that show doesn't piss excellence. This was the first time I didn't tune in for the Heroes premiere, I said finit'. But I did give it a guilt watch on Hulu, and as far as Heroes episodes go, I've seen worse. Little appalled at the blatant ripoff of Carnivale (and its really funny seeing them try to emulate that vibe in a modern carnival setting!) But Ray Park showed up, and I din't see that coming, so that's always awesome. Little bummed his fight scene was in Blur-o-vision, no doubt to make Milo look like he knew what he was doin. It must be interesting being Ray Park, being forced to playfight and typically lose to people he could decimate in real life. Maybe he smiles on the inside. But Heroes may not be a total loss, even if it is, it may be a decent guilty pleasure until it winds down.

    by mponte10006

The Leno show is there when you need something different to watch. It will not be as competitive when up against premieres. Leno is the option in 2-3 weeks when the new shows stop and reruns appear before sweeps. NBC knows this.

I was such a big fan, but I gave up after about three episodes of Season 3. At least I'll always have my Season 1 box set to enjoy. I'll just pretend it was a miniseries or something.

Come ON. I'm glad to see it do well in the ratings, and I think the end result is a good launch for the season, but that was NOT a good episode by any stretch of the imagination.

    House, Big Bang and Fringe

    by wrath4771

That was arguably the best episode of House ever. It was great because House finally ran into someone has smart and clever as him and didn't win in the inevitable pissing contest. It was great because House actually made a connection with another person and had that relationship end just as it starterd. I'm glad Bang Theory did as well as it did - that's a great sitcom - especially for us dorks, dweebs and geeks. Screw Fringe - that show was much better when it was called the X-Files. For as bad as the last X-Files movie was, it was still better than Fringe.

VM season 2 on ch 1 on comcrap.House seems like a fine show, but it's too late to board that train now, methinks; plus, it's a medical show, though Braugher may tip the scales. Does he have a short or long stint? As for Heroes, it was no longer worth watching once the audience developed as much contempt for the characters as the writers did.In other news, Damages has added Campbell Scott and Martin Short(?!) as regulars, and Keith Carradine and Lily Tomlin in guest spots. Kristen Kreuk will appear on Chuck.

The HOUSE season opener was great

    by newc0253

until the second hour, when they got into the fucking talent show and the rap.

I don't know why House doesn't get more love on coax - Herc liked it enough back in the first season. It's a procedural and is trapped to a degree by its formula but it's still one of the best character-driven shows on tv.

I think season opener showed House at its best and worst: best when funny and clever, worst when they can't figure out where to take such a great character so hit the reset button instead(he's out of hospital, Famke Potente leaves to Arizona). I think the idea of a happy House is bullshit and, hopefully, so do the writers.

Cranky, miserable House > Happy, well-adjusted House

    by spyguy

Character development be damned, because House is always more entertaining when he's fucking with people and pulling shit that would typically get his ass kicked, fired, or landed in jail. Having him well-adjusted and sociable could be interesting for a couple of episodes as Wilson, Cuddy and the rest try to deal with as a functional human being, but any longer than that and the show will become as vapid as GREY'S ANATOMY.

    by catvutt

I really am blown away by the continued Season Premiere love. WTF. There were so many ways to got with the House-In-Rehab thing, and to only come up with the completely unbelievable premise, followed by cardboard lunatic characters, the requisite connection-with-some-broad and cop-out of having her be married so they could quickly dispose of her...It was also so horribly mundane. Granted, seeing Braugher back on TV is ALWAYS a good thing, but he was largely wasted too. I dunno. I think you guys got a little too wrapped up in the novelty of the break in formula. It simply wasn't very good at all.

Nice to see quality and ratings are more or less in line.

    by royston lodge

This season's House looks way more promising than last season. Last season was all about the "new team", which isn't that big a deal. This season is about Dr. House and his demons, which is far more interesting. Plus, Fox promoted this year's premiere more than last year's, if memory serves.
I grudgingly admit to being a Gossip Girl addict during its first season, but there hasn't been any meat on that show's bones for quite some time. It fell into the old trap of having characters jumping from bed to bed to bed until everybody's had sex with everybody else so the viewer can no longer relate emotionally to anything that ever happens on-screen. Plus, they've juditiously removes any story element that ever provided actual conflict on the show. They ruined the class conflict by having Rufus marry Lily. They ruined Chuck and Blair by making them an item. They got rid of one of the most interesting aspects of the first season by removing any of the semi-realistic pressures and dilemmas of high school, and showing how rich douches deal with them, like SAT exams and college admissions interviews and stuff like that. So, no surprise for me if fans have abandoned the show.
Kinda sad that Castle is doing so poorly, but from the few episodes I've bothered to watch it's not surprising. Fillion is wasted on that show, and there are too many other shows that follow an almost identical formula but do it much better (The Mentalist, Lie to Me, Bones, etc).
Big Bang Theory: I'm kinda surprised that it did better than How I Met Your Mother. On the other hand, does anybody really care about sitcoms anymore?
I, for one, only watch sitcoms in reruns during the "after school" timeslots. I almost never watch them in prime-time anymore.

    by royston lodge

Considering that the whole gambit is based on Leno's low budget compared to scripted drama, are those ratings "good enough" for NBC to make money off of it?

"Happy House" Oh, I have faith...

    by royston lodge

I have faith that the writers will go heavy on the "be careful what you wish for" angle.
Surely, if House is truly "cured" he will become insufferable. Like an ex-smoker who won't shut up about the dangers of tobacco.
Wilson will miss being "the stable friend", and won't be able to look down his nose anymore. Poor guy.
The preview for next week showed that Forman get's House's job. Whattayawanna bet that he fucks it up royally, and that the mortality rate at the hospital takes a turn for the worse?
How much you wanna bet they add the hospital's chief lawyer as a character, to deal with malpractice suits?
On the other hand, maybe House isn't "cured". He's just sober, and no longer psychotic.
Judging from real-life friends who gave therapy a shot and started taking anti-depressants, their personalities didn't really change. They were still grumpy and cynical in the way we knew and loved them. They just stopped being frighteningly unpredictable, impulsive, and moody. In some cases their vicious sarcastic wit became MORE entertaining, because it was informed from a clear head and not weighed down by dark depression.

    Another idea for House...

    by royston lodge

Up until now, House clearly "cares" about his patients even though he claims not to. They haven't been merely lab rats to him. He sincerely wants to save their lives, even though he always talked about the inevitability of death.
What if, now that he's on psychiatric medication, he becomes much MORE clinical and LESS empathetic?
What if having a clear head for a change makes him more analytical and less emotional?
    Dr. House, meet Dr. Manhattan?
    Just an idea...

Maybe the reason this season of House looks so good...

    by royston lodge

... is precisely because we can't predict how it's going to play out. The way they've set the season up there are way too many variables and way too many paths the writers could take for the show to be predictable.
Unlike most of the plot lines from the last couple of seasons...

Thank you for ruining Conan. Because of your crap comedy old people eat up, Conan is having to dumb down his stuff in order to get ratings to appease the NBC gods. Also why couldn't you pick up Top Gear instead of Coralla? Ben Silverman's legacy

    by rob0729

The guy really screwed up NBC royally. With Leno at 10PM, he is going to sink both their overall ratings and late night ratings. Conan is going to get about the same ratings at 11:30 that he was getting at 12:30. NBC affiliate's local news will suffer too.
I wonder how long it will be before local affiliates try to dump Leno for 10PM news. The Boston affiliates already tried before the Leno launch, but now that his ratings are quickly diminishing, he will be an advertising dollar loser for them.

    HOUSE

    by hipperson

will fall back into the regular rut. House will NOT be allowed to treat patients--but he never really did anyway...he just told the team what to do. So he'll do that here. And the team will fight back--and House will prove to be right. I'm just waiting on House to start sneaking pills. The whole premise of the show is that he's a pill popping genius. Take away the pills, make him nicer, and they kill the whole premise of WHY we love the show.

    Royston Lodge

    by rob0729

I agree that for the network, Leno only needs to get like a 2 share to make money. Leno is getting $20 million a year and is doing 5 shows a week. Charlie Sheen is getting $17-18 million to do 22 shows a year for a half hour comedy. Leno puts more hours on the air in a bout 3 weeks than Sheen puts in an entire year. So that is why NBC isn't upset.
But there is a problem. The affiliates aren't going to be happy with their 11 PM news (which is their biggest advertising dollar maker) having a lead in with a 2 share. I see many local affiliates consulting their lawyers trying to see how they can break their deal with NBC and broadcast the local news at 10PM rather than Leno and then run a repeat of Seinfeld between 11-11:30 before Conan.
Speaking of Conan, he cannot be happy either. The 10PM lead in can be huge for the late night shows. Since people are tuning out on NBC at 10PM, it will hurt Conan's already struggling ratings.
So yes, because of the low production cost of the Leno show, NBC is benefitting at least right now. But if affiliates start to bolt at 10PM especially in larger markets and Conan starts to get lower ratings than Jimmy Kimmel or Colin Fergusen, then they have hurt themselves for the long term.

kring is the biggest douche--he's too proud to turn to comics for ideas for a show about people with superpowers!!! Instead he has no trouble blatantly stealing the fly and now i hear carnivale, and there's been more. No one with a disdain for comic books deserves to have a show about superpowers... if comics are so beneath him, then how can he explain how he only knows how to tell origins while comic books have been spitting out new ideas to keep their superheroes going for like 70 years... what a tool and a douche who has no idea what he's doing and feels dirty because he is above superhero stories. Why does Kring suck so much at life???

    by gunsandsmoke

I really enjoy Heroes. I know that's not the "Cool" thing to say nowadays but I can't help it. Now, I'd admit that last season was weak. They let the storyline get waaaay too confusing. It was obvious they didn't have an "editor" in the writer’s room. Any idea was thrown into the show regardless if it was good or bad. I really enjoyed watching Sylar descend into his own insanity due to all of his powers. The encounter with his father was great, but I could have gone without Luke the Boiling Boy. Sylar never needed a sidekick and I was happy when he ditched him…the 2nd time! I won’t get into ALL the things I liked and disliked but I think you get my point.
I would have to say that if this is indeed the last season of Heroes this is how I would end it… Samuel will end up being a righteous character who’s methods are considered “villainous” by most standards. He will eventually get Hiro (it might end up being Peter tho) to go back in time to the first moment a human met a hero & instead of that exchange going badly (which set the idea that heroes must remain hidden from humans) they help mediate it to a good exchange. Then when they jet back to present day they find that humans & heroes are assimilated like the True Blood universe where Vampires are the norm. There’s no need to hide or run anymore. It lets the Heroes finally get what they have always wanted – a normal life.

    by skidmarkedundies

Big time. The only good parts involved the Sylar in Matt's head. That was some fun acting/writing there. They are setting the Carnival up to be the next Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, they have Ando and Hiro copying Heroes For Hire, and Peter is basically mimicking his namesake Peter Parker. It's really just a bad rip-off of Marvel Comics. Shame really. Season 1 had such promise.

I quit watching House after season 3 ended. Didn't watch season 4 except for the as it turned out great 2-part finale. Seeing those episodes convinced me to give this show another chance. I'm glad I did. Generally the main appeal of this show is House himself, what's he gonna do or say next, and how will his co-workers react. Despite the formula rarely changing, his antics are always far from boring.
Hugh Laurie got the Emmy nomination for a reason. With this type of show the main appeal is always the protagonist(-s)
That's why I also enjoy a formulaic procedural such as The Mentalist - because Patrick Jane is an interesting enough character, to keep me watching without getting bored.

as much as I down Heroes, I can't condone using ratings

    by turketron_2

I know I'm stating the obvious, but fuck it. Much like box office can't be used to tell whether a movie is good all the time, ratings isn't a great indicator for what's good on television. There is a lot of absolute SHIT that gets good ratings/B.O., while really good shows/movies get ignored by the live television viewing audience.
Bash Heroes all you want, but ratings is a weak way to do it.

JAMF, the first 3 seasons of House were like that

    by big jim

Season 4 it changed. Most formulaic shows, after the event at the end of the third season, would revert to the status quo by the end of the first episode of the new season. House instead spent the majority of its writer's strike-shortened season with House picking a new team. They played it like a reality show where, after starting with roughly 40 candidates, he narrowed it down to a dozen or so, then each week someone would get fired in order to get to the 3 he would eventually hire. That's why for me the show has really worked the past couple of seasons - they do the mystery-of-the-week illness but they also have season arcs or at least multiple-episodes arcs. Some of the series' best episodes have been the past couple of seasons.

    by slappy jones

i will bash it for having some of the worst acting to ever grace television screens. for the unoriginal storylines. not just the shit they rip off from other BETTER shows/books/films but also the repetitive nature of their own storytelling (this season ON NBC'S HEROES syler loses his powers A-FUCKING-GAIN) i will bash it for having what I consider one of the worst season finales of all time in season 1. the ratings bashing is just the cherry on top. the show got so bad so fast it was breathtaking. and it will be cancelled this season.

Industry insiders say that's right where they expect Leno to be on a consistent basis and it looks like that is going to be it's range.

I watch HOUSE for HOUSE; Heroes to Zeroes

    by tomonicker

As someone pointed out earlier, and I told my roomie they'd be doing it... House was not going to stay in the looney farm long. They got to get him back to the regular cast ASAP; it's not only to keep us in formula, but also economics- you can't have House stuck in a whole new cast of re-curring characters for long! Heroes is like a relationship that started off grande with much promise, but stalled out and blew up ridiculously... I've got those Heroes episodes sitting on the DVR unwatched. I wonder sometimes now, if "they" are keeping track of what is DVR'd, and when, and if, it's watched. I've got a ton of unwatched Conan, basically, I just check to see who's on, and if I'm bored enough, maybe I'll watch it. That's so sad. :-( Timeshifting is the game these days, even moreso than when the pioneer of it, the VCR was king.

The House premiere works better if you...

    by kevred

...remember that the show is about House. It's not about the other characters. The cartoonish fellow hospital residents are just there as foils to show us House's temperament and reactions. Franka Potente is there to show us that House is always looking for the quick fix, but that reality is messier and he can't have what he wants. Braugher is there to defuse all the typical House combat with authority figures. Everyone in the episode is a road black to House's usual escape routes. Now, personally, I think they could have done all of this without making so many of the patients silly stereotypes. But when I think about that, it seems like the result would have lots of integrity but be depressing as hell, which brings u to the final House-ism: entertainment. It's not a grim, dreary show about the cold. hard realities of medicine; it's a character study and mystery show. And as much as I enjoyed Potente and Braugher, bringing them back would somewhat defeat their purposes.I'm looking forward to seeing where they take this, and what they do with the "old crew" back to prominence.

Heroes should have only gotten the 12/13 episode run for the season and Chuck should have gotten the full season pickup. Heroes has so much potential, but they always screw it up. I think they don't realize by trying to make it so deep, it makes it shallow and boring.
