X-MEN 4?? A NEW MUTANTS Film Also?? Lauren Shuler Donner Wants 'Em...

Published at:  Sep 21, 2009 5:42:16 PM CDT

Merrick here...

Lauren Shuler Donner spoke to /film about an X-MEN: FIRST CLASS film adaptation we heard about a while back (HERE) - basically stating that it wasn't as far along as some recent rumors had suggested.

But then the conversation headed another direction:

As well as the eventual New Class, then - whenever that might be - Shuler Donner revealed that she has been cooking up plans for several other mutant films. The two she named? An X4, reuniting the X-Men and a big screen outing for The New Mutants. X4, she said, had yet to be pitched to the studio, however.

...says /film HERE.

I'm assuming the first line of the above quote meant "First Class" - not "New Class" - but I presented it verbatim all the same.

I th x-men films. Yeah, sure, they got their flaws, but I like them, lots of fun. I really do not care how faithful they are to the source material or not, as long as they look cool and have some decent action. You nerds on this site care waaay too much about film adaptations. IF you don't like the way the studios make your beloved comics into movies, then make them yourself! Or, just don't watch them!

I'm in! As long as they keep to the early team and don't go all Rictor, Warpath, Domino, Shatterstar, Feral, etc. Stay away from the Rob (why can't he draw feet?) Liefeld era and I'm good. Oh, and introduce Illyana in X4 (and her disappearance) so she can join the New Mutants in their movie. One more thing, don't have them call themselves the New Mutants; it worked for the title of the book but as a team name it is lame.

    by margot_tenenbaum

...so I'm thrilled that they're considering a NM film. You could make a good movie from either of the major Chris Claremont & Bill Sienkiewicz stories: Demon Bear or Legion and then make a X-Men/New Mutants fusion film with the X-Men in Asgard story. The first 50 issues of NM are pretty underrated comics, IMO.
Warlock could be really interesting looking on film if they resist the urge to make him a cartoon and use the totally alien, constantly shifting, angular, black-with-yellow-neon-highlights Bill Sienkiewicz version.

shitty X-Men films. None of the X-Men films are great but whatever heart the first two films had was clearly because of Brian Singer. X3 and Wolverine are garbage and, while I havent quite proven this scientifically, people who like them are agents of Satan himself. Seriously what good could possibly come from this god awful production team making some unwatchable CW like mess, with that terrible CW media whore Josh Schwartz, with an awful CW cast making an X-Men first class movie? can somehow be FIXED through clever writing? None of these films have great writing, it would take a work of staggering genius to bring characters back to life and make Hugh Jackman actually start playing WOlverine, and reset the status quo as well as have its own stand alone story. Why would any self respecting X-fan even want that??Reset the franchise, the cast has never been terribly great and the direction of the film never really captured what the franchise is all about anyway.

Fox may not have X-Men & FF 4ever: Kirby's estate to sue

    by zardoz

That's right, Jack "The King" Kirby's family has notified their intent to sue for the copyrights to their father's works, which include X-Men and Fantastic Four. It's complicated, but the copyrights won't be up for those titles for about another 10 years, so it won't be happening immediately. Basically, this is falling under the same copyright issue as the creators of Superman vs. Time Warner. So Fox might just have to renegotiate the rights to X-Men or maybe, just maybe they'll go to a more deserving studio, say, Disney...?

    by autodidact

I don't see what all the hate is about. I have been reading X-Men comics since I was 9. I have more than an entire long box of X-Men comics, as well as half a box of just Wolverine comics. I know the universe and the characters. I found Wolverine to do a decent job providing background to the Marvel movie reality's Wolverine, while also offering some kickass superhero action and not dishonoring the comics.

Sure there were tons of problems, but none of the X-Men movies have been perfect either (well, maybe X-Men 2). It seems to me that most of the hate was misdirected. If you come to a movie called X-Men Origins: Wolverine expecting any kind of depth you're an idiot.
I'm very interested to see what the Usual Suspects guy could do with the next Wolverine movie. There is potential for it to be better than the first one, but again I don't see why the first one is getting so much hate.

Would be a great X-Men comics storyline for Fox to rape. It's got everything: time travel, sentinels, a mutant war. (Of course, the comic centers around the assassination of Senator Kelly by Mystique, who are dead and de-mutied in the movies, respectively, but I'm sure some quick changes could get around that problem) It seems like a no-brainer, to me...

    by disney_retcond_my_std

I would rather watch Jubilee Origins than X4. Where could you take it? Retcon the entire 3rd movie? Intro Sinister or AOA? The X-Men movies were all a bit weak (even X2 with that lame lady deathstrike) We need Kitty Pryde/Colossus/Nightcrawler love triangle mixed with Wolverine being silent but deadly, Gambit being fucking cool, and Storm with a white mohawk leading the team and proving it's more to that strong character than Halle in pleather. If you can't do that, just move on to an X-Force movie and blow shit up for 2 hrs.

    by cgih8r

He pays attention to quality and detail in a way no other Marvel director has. What I liked about X2 so much was I did not feel bombarded by crappy CGI, it was the perfect blend of live action footage mixed with appropriate CGI. He's not a lazy director, with X2 he made a solid Marvel movie. I only wish he could have made X3 because I know he would have presented the Dark Phoenix in a more impressive way, the wings of fire and all that. Angel would have looked alot better too I'm sure. I can forgive changing the source material a little as long as its justified and makes for a quality film rather than a shitty Cashcow like Wolverine was...no more of those please.

I gotta give them credit for cranking out a movie that was NOT that bad considering the circumstances, last minute Brett Ratner, rushed production, etc . To think I can honestly have that movie playing in the background while Superman Returns is collecting dust in the background. I have said it before, and I will say it again. Superman Returns was a piece of shit. X3 was tolerable tho. But Wolverine was a piece of shit. If they do another X-Men movie, I hope they quit with the Pre-Quel Treatment.

Fans will know what it is and kids will still be drawn to the movie. I hate to tell everyone but..WOLVERINE IS DEAD! Fox killed him. The character is over done. All opportunity with this current incarnation of characters has been used, misused and basterdized (Deadpool). Havoc, Banshee, Forge there is any # of places to mine from. MOVE ON! Here is my paraphrased version: Producer with a commodity wants to continue making money with said commodity. The X-MEN franchise started out mediocre and went downhill fast. Hopefully in 5 to 10 years the studio will take the BATMAN BEGINS/THE DARK KNIGHT route and have a complete reboot with new talent behind the camera.

Multicharacter sequels would be financially unviable to make

    by wayne6000

If they mean more sequels with actors like Pat Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Ben Foster, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming, Aaron Stanford, Shawn Ashmore, etc. it'd be awesome to see - if Fox had shrewdly signed them all to a 10 film contract (at the same salary) at the start, but Fox stupidly only made them sign on for 2 films.

To make an X-Men 4, they'd have to pay a 100 mill (or very close to it) just in actor salaries alone (especially from the first 7 actors), from all the actors all understandably wanting higher payments, so it's not viable.

X-Men 3 cost Fox $US 200 mill and made money, but not as much as they would've liked.

The only way to save the franchise...

    by thedarklinglord

    1. Pretend X3 never happened. Or, if need be, play it off like the whole thing was Xavier having a dream, an ill omen of the potential future. Bring back most of the cast (see #3) and tell the REAL Dark Phoenix story.

    2. Get Bryan Singer to write/direct, along with the writers from X2.

    3. Re-cast Storm. Halle Berry had no business being cast in the first place, and her pissy primadonna bullshit and demands for more money make her an easy and obvious cut where budget is concerned. The role should have gone to Angela Bassett from the very beginning.

    4. Keep Kelsey Grammer as Beast. It was the only bit of casting that actually worked for X3. (Really, what was the fucking point of Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut? With hardly any lines, there are any number of steriod freak wrestlers/UFC fighters who could have filled the role without the need for foam muscle enhancement. And considering they didn't even bother with the half-brother connection to Xavier, it's not like making the character British was important.)

    5. Fox needs to grow a set of balls that will give them the confidence to support X-Men as a proper franchise. Meaning, they should be fully prepared to tell a more epic, complex, layered story over 2-3 movies (each around 2:30-2:45 hours) rather than trying to wrap everything up nicely in a single 100-minute easily digestible pellet for the ADD masses.

    X-Men 4 and 5

    by miyamoto_musashi

Like the Idea of two connected movies.
No. 4 - Villians - Sinister and the Marauders (would include Gambit)
Also we would see the beginning of the Sentinels program.
The Team would be ; Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Shadowcat, Rogue, Iceman and Angel. Beast would be a supporting character. Definetely would be more of a team, a family, adventurerers feel, no school aspect.
Of course there would be a romance between Gambit and a captured Rogue. Experimentation on Rogue by Sinister would give her the powers we know. Gambit eventually joining the X-Men.
Would also see by the end a defeated but far from finished Sinister taking an almost dead Angel with him. And of course at the end acknowlegement/small cameo from Sinister's boss, Apocalypse.
No.5 would see an escalation in the drama with the rise of Apocalypse, accompanied by Sinister and his four horsemen (including Archangel of course), the Sentinel program in full flight, the X-Men stuck in the middle of it all and trying to end it.
Had thought about Cable or Bishop from the future always an option, but the whole time travel stuff might make it too convuluted.
Anyway plenty of good stories to tell, just need someone with the right focus, vision and professionalism to tell them. Sadly I could see Fox hiring someone like McG

    Days of Futures Past

    by dailysportspages

Movie starts in a future dystopia, with an older grizzled Wolverine being sought after by a new group of young mutants in need of leadership.

Wolverine recalls back to how this all happened. And it was due to the governments response to the power of the Phoenix.
That pushed the Sentinel program ahead and the world was eventually turned into shit after a big mutant/human war.

If only he knew then what he knows now... he would have been able to stop Jean from becoming the Phoenix and averted this whole disaster.

He finds the remains of Cerebro and uses it to contact Xavier back in the past.

I love the original team of Cannonball, Sunspot, Karma, Mirage, and Wolfsbane. Wolfsbane (Rahne Sinclair) and (Mirage)Dani Moonstar are my favorite New Mutants). I also liked the addition of Magik (Ilyana Rasputin) and the alien Warlock later in the series. No Feral please. This film could be a great addition to the X-Men Universe if it is done correctly.

X-Men seems to me like one of those worlds where you can do pretty much anything, so the most powerful thing a director can do is say no. Keep things small. Not just do 'cool stuff'. Also, if you get the blu-ray you also get a free DVD copy and a free digital copy. Once I sat down and re-watched it I was stunned how great Liev was as Victor. And I actually liked the ending when Xavier came and rescued the mutant children from Col Stryker. The only thing I hated after my second viewing was the Super Deadpool abomination. Its not my fault you have seen every genre movie ever made 100 times and don't understand telling a story cinematically, you hated Superman Returns for not containing enough action and straying into new areas, you hate X3 as it was too actiony and presented a classic comic book fight story and now people hate Wolverine for being clichéd, news flash there are no more original stories to tell so if your gonna critique at least try and remain relevant.

Maybes: Shadowcat, Phoenix. Phoenix would be hard to translate for TV, and casting for Kitty Pryde would have to be pitch-perfect for it to work.
Possible additions: You could throw in any mutant with tv-friendly powers who has a fun attitude. The key to translating Excaliber to TV would be maintaining the goofy fun of the title's original run, not so much about which team members you include.

All in all I think people were too harsh on X3 anyway ( except for some obvious missteps ) I thought the casting was excellent in that movie for example... surprisingly so.

    oh and Jackman as Wolverine

    by murdermostfowl

And for those jackasses that think Jackman was wrong for Wolverine, you need to travel back in time a bit You owe the entire franchise to him and Ian McKellen. They absolutely sold the first movie. They gave a legitimacy to the first film that really jump started all the super hero movies we've had in the last decade. If Xmen had been a bomb do you really think we'd be here bitching about #4?

Cyclops needs to be the Hero this time around.

    by ganymede3010

So the movie can reflect the reality of the comics. Cyclops always came through with the clutch optic blasts, seems like he was one of the few mutants who was effective against the sentinels. Brian Singer better make him more formidable this time around.

Personally I never cared for Jackman as Wolverine. I thought he was miscast from day I saw the first movie, but at the time I admitted freely I was in the minority.
People have turned against him now because X3 and Wolverine were such disappointing movies. Put him in a hit, they will love him again.
But once again, he never worked for me as Wolverine. I am an old X-Men fan. and there is nothing sexy about Wolverine IMO. I see him the way John Byrne drew him - gruff, rugged, short, stocky and as hairy as George the Animal Steele. More Charles Bronson than Jackman.

And why the Sentinels could and could not work

    by continentalop

Pulling off Giant Robots is going to be hard. Very hard. It is one thing to suspend disbelief about Mutants, but having giant robots thrown into their universe is suddenly going to break the internal logic. It would be like doing a vampire movie and suddenly having aliens pop up - you could do it, but it would be harder to take the fictional universe seriously.
So, I would suggest they change the Sentinels into something like cyborgs/transhumanist. Now, a lot of comic book purist will cry foul (and I understand their pain, since I could be considered a comic book purist) but really, it wouldn't be that big of leap from the X-Men universe.
    1) the only reason the Sentinels were picked for Days of Future Past was because they already existed and fit the criteria for a villain that fit the need to make a dystopian future - a robot intelligence that would take over. Well, if you have something else similar, it would probably work just as well without suspending disbelief.
    2) You already have the White King (Donald Pearce) and the Reavers, so why change them from anarchistic cyborgs into government made cyborgs designed to hunt/eliminate mutants? You could even have some of them be the humans Wolverine dispatched in X-Men 2.
    3) It would be easier for the audience to accept something like cyborgs or men in armor than giant humanoid robots. For one thing, it would make it less like a T5 ripoff, and secondly the image of a giant humaniod robot would just be laughable. BUT, they might accept transhumanist (especially if it was established that Trask or someone else felt that was the only way humans could compete against mutants) or men in armors (Iron Man).
I can understand if people disagree with me, but personally I see this as a better option than the Master Mold variety of Sentinels.

The Demon Bear Would Make a Good Story

    by shadowcat_664

If they decide to do a New Mutuants movie, the Demon Bear would be an awesome storyline. An New Mutants animated film or television show would be even better than live action IMHO. They could feature the Demon Bear, Sentinels, Asgard, the Mojoverse, or even the Brood in an animated televison show format.

The White King was featured in the New Mutants graphic novel if I remember correctly. He was a partial cyborg and one evil dude. He kidnapped Professor X and tried to kill Wolfsbane. He would be a great opponent for the New Mutants to fight again.
