Hercules Has Seen The First Three Episodes of The Brand New SEINFELD-Centric Season Of CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM!!

Published at:  Sep 20, 2009 7:22:16 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

The first new episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” since 2007 hits HBO tonight, and it’s funny stuff, the first installment of a season that will see the cast of “Seinfeld” reunite for an NBC special in the “Curb” universe.

None of the old “Seinfeld” cast appear this week or next, but they have meaty roles in episode three. The first two “Curb” episodes of the season are essentially an elaborate segue from the Black-centric prior season.

Spoilers for the first three episodes lurk in the text invisible.

Larry David, who built his sitcom career on coincidences, keeps running into his estranged wife Cheryl, who is not unfriendly to the funnyman.

At the same time David’s girlfriend, Loretta Black (Vivica A. Fox), is diagnosed with cancer. Horrified at the prospect of having to sacrifice valuable time on the golf course to help care for a cancer victim, Larry stumbles on a ingenious scheme to quickly extricate himself from the relationship.

Then, when Larry learns Cheryl’s going on auditions in a frustrating effort to revive her acting career, he hatches another plan: get back into Cheryl’s pants by taking NBC up on its longstanding offer to mount a “Seinfeld” reunion, and cast Cheryl as George Costanza’s ex-wife.

Incredibly, no one pulled a Merv Griffin Show; Jerry's old apartment set was stored, reclaimed and refurbished and looks now exactly as it did a decade ago. No reference is made to Michael Richards’ headline-making Laugh Factory rant in the first three episodes, but word is the series will be making sport of it as the season wears on. One of the funniest things about the third episode is how Larry’s perception of the “Seinfeld” finale differs from the cast members’.

Plus? Catherine O'Hara plays Funkhauser's crazy sister tonight. I deem it all splungeworthy.

9 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

Because they sure need a do-over for the original cringe inducing finale.

    by wereplatypus

That are basically clip shows. But I'm not sure that anything could have lived up to audience expectations. I DID think the last lines were perfect though, repeating their first conversation from the pilot. 9 years = we didn't learn anything.

    It's So Awesomely Meta

    by crow3711

I hope this is also Curbs Final Season (well, not really cause I almost hope it never really ends), but it almost seems too good to have the guy who created basically the most popular sitcom of all time, create a show that takes place in the same universe where he did create that show, and then to have the reunion of said show on the sister show he created as a sort of meta-continuation of Seinfeld. This is basically something that could only ever happy and work on television, and I applaud L.D. for being such a fucking genius. It all just ties together so perfectly...almost like an episode of Seinfeld.

Basically, since no one else here will explain, if you didnt go to wiki already, the gang commits some sort of mild crime, I don' remember what exactly, but they get put on trial. Basically ever recurring character appears as a character witness during the trial, and basically sums up that these are four of the worst, most selfish people who have ever lived. They get sent to jail for like 15 years or something. It ends with them sitting in a jail cell.

    The Crime

    by crow3711

They witness a car jacking in some small, quaint town, and then don't do anything about it, just watch. They are arrested under a good samaritan clause for standing idly by, and then combined with the witnesses, gets them sentenced to jail time.

    The Seinfeld finale

    by monkey butler

was clever, but not really all that funny. The metacomment about finale cliches was kinda cool (the clip show, the main characters leaving, the plane crash, the admission of love etc.) and it was funny to see sitcom characters (this pretty much applies to all sitcoms) get called on how they're basically all dicks, but beyond that there wasn't a whole lot to laugh about.

    The Seinfeld finale

    by i am_notreal

They were going on an overseas trip, but (I think due to weather) had a layover in a small town, in CT if memory serves. There they saw someone getting mugged and, instead of helping him, they stood by and watched and made fun of it. Failing to assist the victim of a crime turns out to be a crime itself in that town, and they get put on trial -- and characters from previous shows all turn up (the Soup Nazi, Teri Hatcher's character, etc) to testify about how bad they are, and they end up in jail. The last scene is Jerry doing standup in the slammer. I just caught it not that long ago, and the fact that I can't remember many details just underscores the forgettability of it all. It all felt very forced and obvious and was quite far from the show's shining hour.

    Now we've gone overboard

    by i am_notreal

with explanations on the Seinfeld finale, but I think the consensus is pretty much that it was a huge letdown. Can't wait to see what Curb does with it. Curb is the most wonderfully acidic comedy in TV history -- since George Costanza was based on Larry David, Curb is basically George Costanza Unbound.

It tied in nicely with the rest of the show, IMO. It was nice to have David back writing for the series at the very end. Also, I believe they were sentenced to only one year, but Christ knows how long they stayed in there due to bad behavior...

    by danielkurland

That all sounds AMAZING, but how does Cheryl playing George make any sense? I can't wait to hear Larry's "interpretation" of the Seinfeld finale. I still laugh in the second season when he's describing how he saw George: "He was just a cool guy, that got into problems."

Seinfeld finale is great in concept, and...

    by danielkurland

it would have been better had they not had the clip show beforehand. But the whole idea of them all going to jail because of 9 years' worth of shitty things they did is pretty much the perfect way to end the show. Could the script have been better? Yes. But damn if I don't love the last line.

Point is, there is only one genius and it's fucking Larry David. Not saying anybody is arguing it but like I said above I here from time to time my friends try to tell me it was mostly Seinfeld that brought the magic. I couldn't disagree more w/ that. What has Jerry done since the show? That dumbass Bee movie. Look what David did when he didn't' need the money.

    Seinfeld finale...

    by bizarrojerry

I will say that, yes, the finale just wasn't very funny. But I've always admired the idea to complete throw out any hint of being sentimental. The main point seemed to be, "Why should they get a happy ending? They're all horrible people!"I'm still unsure whether that fainting was real or fake. I think Jeff turned out be much worse than Larry when without hesitation he agreed the woman should be sent back to the institution. Even Larry hesitated for a minute.
