THE OFFICE!! SNL THURSDAY!! PARKS AND REC!! NBC’s Autumn Begins Tonight And Hercules Has Seen A Big Chunk Of It!!

Published at:  Sep 17, 2009 7:31:52 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

NBC returns from repeats tonight with its strongest comedy block in many a year.

Some notes on “The Office,” which launches its sixth season tonight in hilarious form:

* The episode gets a lot funnier after the first act.

* 6.1 begins with Michael, Dwight and Andy acting like nine-year-olds, practicing what they claim to be parkour. NBC doesn’t forward HD screeners so we’ll have to wait to see if Ed Helms did his own stunts.

* I deem Helms the episode’s MVP.

* We pick up on “the last day of summer interns,” which suggests Pam’s been knocked up for a while.

* Kelly Erin is still the Scranton branch’s receptionist.

* “We have not told people about Pam’s situation,” allows Jim.

* We learn big news about a member of the Scranton branch’s staff. (Hint: not Angela.)

* We learn Kevin in unlikely to win big on “Wheel of Fortune.”

* Michael begins making up gossip to further his very weak-minded agenda.

* Andy’s reaction to the rumor Michael makes up about him is really funny.

* Many of Michael’s rumors got laughs out of me, but the one he makes up about Dwight was my favorite.

Outtakes from the series’ 100th episode from last May, “Company Picnic”:

***

Some notes on tonight’s “Parks and Recreation,” which gets off to a strong second-season start:

* Despite the fact that Anne and Andy are no longer a couple, “Everwood”/“OC” vet Chris Pratt has been added to the title sequence.

* Andy’s storyline has taken a pretty funny turn.

* Leslie becomes a hero of Pawnee’s homosexual community and the scourge of Pawnee’s anti-homosexual community when she accidentally marries two male penguins.

* While it’s not cool to say the word “Basterds” on CBS at 7:30 p.m., it’s totally cool to depict two male penguins having sex on NBC at 8:30 p.m.

* Offal is flung, but not by the penguins.

* Leslie is surprised to learn The Bulge is Pawnee’s gay bar.

* “They might die, but it would be so cute!”

***

NBC launches tonight also a revival of “SNL Thursdays,” which was the network’s top-rated scripted series last autumn. I think only six live episodes have been ordered, but if it somehow does as well as it did during the election year I suspect “Community” or “30 Rock” could be bumped to another night.

If “SNL Thursdays” doesn’t beat NBC’s sitcoms (and who knows what’ll happen now that it has to compete with “Survivor,” “Bones,” “FlashForward” and “The Vampire Diaries”), well, we’re only three years from another election.

“SNL Thursday”: 8 p.m. Thursday. NBC.
“Parks and Recreation”: 8:30 p.m. Thursday. NBC.
“The Office”: 9 p.m. Thursday. NBC.
“Community”: 9:30 p.m. Thursday. NBC.

To anticipate the question, “30 Rock” returns Oct. 15.

and I was about to say that there's been enough political stuff to cause some interest (health care, "you lie!," tea-baggers, glenn beck, et al), they still don't have a strong Obama, or at least haven't cracked how to make fun of him.

Like countless others in the past. I mean, what do you do when the baby is born, oh right, oh here is a cute baby, that's good for laughs, no it's not, unless it's like the Hangover then that works, but most other times babies in comedies = FAIL

    by boe

Outside of firing the cast (aside from Aziz and Aubry Plaza) and the writers and scrapping the premise, I don't see how they can salvage this show. Last season was so unoriginal and relentlessly mean it was genuinely hard to watch. Too bad - Poehler was pretty good on SNL (and I don't think women are funny as a rule). I might watch if Poehler could convince Will Arnett to join the cast, but I imagine he has better things to do.

Amy Poehler's character going to a park to condemn kids for throwing bags of dog shit at each other.....then unwittingly being pulled into the fight and having fun throwing the dog shit back at the kids was hilarious. The supporting cast of guys are all great too. Poehler's boss is whacked out of his mind and very funny.

    by canuck815

I really think Michael got a lot of redemption last season with how he handled the Michael Scott Paper Company. Now I feel like we're gonna revert back to kooky old Michael inappropriately handling Pam's pregnancy. It was good that he could pull his act together and be a savvy businessman, but now we're gonna have him awkwardly trying to get into the delivery room or some shit

Has always been portrayed as a savvy salesman but a terrible manager. The same quality of wanting to be everyone's friend is good in one job and a disaster in the other.
Anyway - looking forward to that and community. Not at all to PR and SNL. Can't wait for Flashforward.

P&R didn't improve, and I don't see how it can, unless they dump or de-emphasize the lead. With exception of a fleeting Creed moment, Office was flat. Community was OK; not ready to write it off yet, but less of the guy whose only function is to spout pop-culture references would help.

    by jjensen9971

The Office is a show rooted in awkward hard to watch humor. That was last nights episode, seeing Michael screw things up for Stanley then fix his problem only to screw it up again and watch Jim and Pam fix it to only once again watch Michael screw it up was pure old school Office joy.

It's not a main stream comedy.
