Capone has details about free midnight screenings of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY in Chicago, NY, LA, and other cities!!!

Published at:  Sep 16, 2009 11:28:57 PM CDT

Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here.

So yesterday, I put up the trailer link to PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, and today is when I tell you about the ambitious way that this film is going to screen and open around the country. First off, let's talk about the Chicago screening. It will happen simultaneously with the Fantastic Fest screening on Thursday, September 24 at 11:59pm at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N Southport Ave. in Chicago.

It's a 750-seat venue that we've never done a screening in before, so this will be an interesting experiment. Now, I will not be in attendance for the Chicago screening, since I'll be in Austin, but our very own AICN @$$hole, Ambush Bug, will be running the show and filling in as host this time around.

Here's the other twist, but I think it's a twist that will make it possible for everyone who wants to attend this screening to get in. If you think you have the guts to check out what is reported to be one of the scariest movies in a very long time, you should RSVP to www.paranormalmovie.com/chicago. You can watch the trailer at this site as well. Each person attending must fill out an RSVP. This is not a +1 situation. But the good news is that if you have 10 friends that want to go, all they have to do is go to the RSVP site, and you don't have to write an essay for me to win. The only restriction is that all attendees must be 17 years of age or older. There will still be a guest list, IDs will be checked, same as always.

Here's another cool thing. Paramount wants you all to tell the world what you think of the film after you see it. There will be camera crews on hand to gather reactions; they want you to Twitter, write up the movie on Facebook and MySpace. Whatever you do to get the word out, that's what they want you to do. That covers Chicago. Good luck, and you probably want to arrive early.

There will also be screenings the same night at theaters in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, and Seattle. To attend any of these screenings, go to www.paranormalmovie.com/(name of city)--so Los Angeles would be paranormalmovie.com/losangeles, and so on.

You can see a list of cities where the film will actually be opening or screening on September 25, but if you don't see your town on the list, you can demand that it open where you are. Go to ParanormalMovie.com or Demand It and vote to bring this film to your neck of the woods. If the demand is high enough, the film will drop in your city. Simple as that.

I'm ready to soil myself at this one, folks. I hope you are to. Have fun getting to sleep after this one. See you on the other side. And for those of you in Chicago, treat Ambush Bug nice. He's a gentle soul. Enjoy…

They did a very similar trailer for 28 Days Later...

    by derlanghaarige

...and The Hills Have Eyes (remake). Both with the same audience ractions and people claiming they just saw the scariest movie of the year. I mean, I'm happy if it turns out to be a good movie, but at the moment I'm not really excited. Especially because so far it looks like an endless chain of jump scares. (And if you make a movie with an endless chain of jump scares, you better make sure that it's directed by Sam Raimi!)

They must be very confident about this film if they are letting the cynical masses promote almost themselves like this.

    Something smells fishy here...

    by dayman

Did you see the audience shots in the trailer? They looked like reactions of people at any moderately scary portion of any mediocre horror film. I saw people going absolutely crazy in the theater during 'Blair Witch' because they had been told by the marketing that it was going to be 'so scary!!!' We all now know, in retrospect, just how 'scary' that movie wasn't.

Moreover, it seems like Capone and AICN is WAY too far on board with this movie. Like, being paid to be on board with this movie. Maybe not in cash. But perhaps in access, favor, or some other Hollywood currency. Don't they remember hyping up Blair Witch? Don't they remember the disappointment? Why risk further risking the integrity of the site by jumping on the bandwagon of this movie and actively giving assistance in promoting and marketing the film?

    Something smells fishy here.

Don't understand the internet. Also can someone please explain to me how a showing the day before a movie comes out, is considered an ADVANCE screening? All the ADVANCE screenings near me have been on like 7 or 9 o'clock on a thursday when the movie comes out at midnight. I guess in a world where twitter exsits you can't let word of mouth get around.

    by bullet3

And I'm not someone who's easily scared. Its Probably the last time I remember being really creeped out by a movie.
You just get kind of pulled into it, and about 2/3rds of the way through I wanted to stop watching it, because it was making me so uncomfortable. Granted,it doesn't work nearly as well on repeat viewings, but that first time was pretty damn intense.

A friend and I saw Blair Witch with super minimal knowledge of what we were walking into and it was a creepy and uncomfortable movie to watch. Even though the sneaking suspicion of fakeness was there it was still genuine crying and screaming from the actors. Paired with the handheld camera, it was really effective. When the movie ended, the whole theater stood in unison and walked out in silence. It was visibly obvious everyone was disturbed. Repeat viewings now are comical, but nothing can change that initial feeling. Hopefully this one recreates that.

saw it free at a preview before it got wide release... we walked in laughing and joking and making fun of the "witch" crowd that was there...then... that movie made people whimper. It was truly the last scary movie I saw that had a level that matched when I saw in The Shining and Exorcist and Halloween as a kid.

Saw it opening night in a packed theater knowing very little about it (wasn't award of geek sites like this at the time) and it creeped me the hell out. By the time I heard that baby cry, I was so damn unnerved. I can't stand it when people who waited for it on DVD always make fun of it and call it lame. I hope to hell P.Activity gives me the same feeling, but I'm afraid it will never live up to the hype.

it seems that most movies feel that the only way to genuinely scare the audience is by placing them in the movie via the handheld/documentary method. REC did it and i loved it but man it's happening a lot and it's beginning to feel like an overused gimmick. what do you guys think?

Boris Kodjoe, who stars in the upcoming Surrogates and was previously seen in Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion, has joined Milla Jovovich in Screen Gems' Resident Evil: Afterlife. He revealed the casting on his Twitter account:

In Toronto meeting with the director of my new movie 'Resident Evil: Afterlife' Very exciting!!! Lots of stunts, shooting guns, monsters...

That director is Paul W.S. Anderson (who is married to Jovovich). Anderson directed the first film in the franchise and wrote and produced the other two.

    by harrycalder

...that trailer does not churn my butter. Those audience reaction clips always come off silly to me. The bits of the film they do show are promising, but still I have to wonder... when they resort to this gimmick in trailers, it has almost always meant (to me) "not scary at all, unless you've never seen a horror movie before this one." Ah, well, we'll see... For the record, I'm a HUGE Blair Witch fan. So maybe.

I think the reason they're marketing it like that is

    by bullet3

for this type of movie (same with blair witch), most of the fear comes from the building of tension over a period of time, with probably several jump scares thrown in.
If they tried to do a traditional trailer, they'd end up spoiling the whole movie. Its true though, that you can't tell at all if its good or bad from a trailer like that, but with so much positive buzz I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

We were terrified after that movie. He stayed at my parents' house after the movie, and we slept on couches in the living room, which overlooked the woods. We turned a light on. I went into the kitchen and when he came in a few moments later to see me standing in the corner, facing the wall, he freaked. Oh, and we were 21 at the time.I think what you can't see is a lot scarier than what you can see.

Alien Abduction Youtube series similar to this...

    by sk229

    http://bit.ly/6rOE6

Hi, I did a web series about a character who has previously written books about his experiences with alien abduction. He is suffering from writer's block and decides to put down the pen and pick up a camera. It's been getting some good traffic so far on youtube, but I've taken what would have been the third and fourth episodes and trashed them, because I want the rest of the 'season' (will be 12 episodes and an HD non-character POV short film) to live up to the first. Should have all of it up by mid-December.

Let me also say that if you know anything about web series, most of them are terrible. I consciously figured that I could do something really good with no money (first four eps, Alien Abduction included, cost less than $500) and this concept would sell itself since 'real alien footage' 'alien abduction video', 'ufo's, etc. are organic searches that happen a certain number of times per day no matter what. I figured, make it good, and they will come and so will the search rank. That is pretty much what has been happening as I've done almost NO promotion on this. We've slowly inched up in certain search terms and had a few blips where 300-400 hits per day happened because someone posted it somewhere. I think if the entire season was up at once, it'd gain even more traction.

All the web series entertainment companies that would normally finance a web series rejected it, so my goal now is to beat them at their own game and become the first truly successful web series. I also wanted to show that doing emo, reality-style trash and snarky shows about characters who all live in Brooklyn and their annoying observations could be trounced by ALIENS SCARING THE SHIT OUT OF YOU.

CAPONE - PLEASE HELP ME PLEASE

    by thusspakespymunk

Capone, I'm trying to find out about a movie that was advertised on AICN. It's not DEATH OF A GHOST HUNTER or PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. This was I -think- a Canadian movie AICN made a huge deal about that featured footage of an older couple talking about their lost son/daughter something, and the big payoff of the slow-moving trailer was the end wher after the discussion with the family it pans right during a shot and reveals a tiny person's face in the darkness off to the side of the filmed footage. I believe the trailer was on film stock but I could be wrong, it had a weird IN SEARCH OF quality to it, like real interviews and a faux documentary. I lost the name of the movie, want to see it. It was about a FAMILY, not a single person, and ithere was talk of it coming out soon, but I can't find a trace of it. What was it called? Do you know?

    by thusspakespymunk

It was LAKE MUNGO. I encourage anyone who plans to see PARANORMAL ACTIVITY to compare the ads for PARANORMAL ACTIVITY with LAKE MUNGO. The latter features realistic people talking like real human beings, realistic imagery, realistic backgrounds and settings, people trying to cope with the supernatural and being legitimately-confused-seeming, as opposed to the "WHOAH - DUUUUUDE!" feel of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. Here's the trailer to what appears to be a far superior film on the same subject: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzAbnIFoMqU

    by acid_frio

I have to say, I was underestimating this movie. I've had enough of movies that "claim" to be scary and NOT deliver, and I have seen TONS of those. Well, this movie is THE exception. It blows The Blair Witch Project out of the water and into space. Paranormal Activity is THE SCARY MOVIE TO SEE. But please, see it in a movie theater...your experience will be worth it. Every single time the couple records themselves sleeping, more and more momentum and tension builds. I won't spoil anything, but this movie is building towards something FRIGHTENING. Also, there is some humor in the movie, but it does not take away or cheapen the story at all. I highly recommend checking this movie out.

    Loved it but

Harry, the introduction beforehand where you're telling everyone its not real completely detracted from the experience. This movie would be better off benefiting from "Blair Witch" type of hype, where everyone going in should be lead to believe it's found footage.

    Dreamworks/Paramount = MASSIVE FAIL

    by dickballsworth

RSVP'd to see this at the Arclight Hollywood (that's Los Angeles, natch) and we got there about 2 hours early to find a line stretched outside, down the sidewalk, and all the way into the parking garage. Ever hopeful, we still got in line and sweated it out. At 11:30 as the line started moving, we managed to get as far as the exit to the garage and were then told that they weren't going to be able to seat the rest of us, including the several dozen people that were still ahead of us in line. They claimed they tried to get some additional screens but it didn't work out. Apparently there were people in line to see it since 2:30 that afternoon... bad on us for assuming RSVP meant we had a shot with a two hour wait in line. Ultimately we were cool about it, but then today I find out that this isn't playing in Los Angeles until sometime in October?! Are you kidding me? Fucking Hollywood California and we don't get an opening? Guess what, Paramount. I'll be happily waiting for the rental (or just downloading the torrent) on this one, thankyouverymuch. If you're gonna shit on the public like this, don't be surprised when you get a backlash. What the fuck!

    NY screening was the worst

    by jobafet

I went to the NY screenig of Pranormal Activity this past Thursday, and I have to say it was one of the worst screenings I have ever been to. Now just to let you know I'm not talking about the film because I didn't get to see it. I was in line at 8:30pm for the midnight screening, and I shit you not I was only 50 feet from the door, but when midnight came rolling around I was not even close to getting in. I stood on line with my bro and two friends, and all was well, till this huge douche bag working for I would assume Paramount can out and started yell at the top of his lungs that the screening was closed, and that we should take a paper with an email address that would inform us about the next screening. Now I've been to a million of these screenings and I understand that they are first come first serve, but i was 50 FEET from the door and I was there since 8:30. So I have to admit is was a bit pissed when the anouncement was made, but what rerally made me want to blow up was the fact that this Paramount ass wipe just starts yelling at us about taking this paper and how if we don't start listening to him we he would just pass us by. Now to make this clear he had not come out once before he went on this crazed yelling power trip. He literally just came out and started yelling at people in the line. Now I wish I could tell you it ended there, but not 5 minutes after this ass wipe started yell another one of his partners came out and said" wait there might be some seats left". oh how I wish we didn't listen to that whapper, because like idots we waited, and guess who came back out yelling about there being no more seat. That's right you guessed it. The ass wipe. Only this time he started talking abouut a possable 2am screening. Now normally I would think, hey thats cool of them to try and do, but not on this night because it only led to more madness. Any way to make a long story even longer the promissed 2am screening only led to another line forming that we didn't know about, and that just led to people getting into the screening that were on the line after us. So to sum it up THE WORST SCREENING I HAVE EVER BEEN TO, and like i said I've been to a lot. p.s. I apologize for the poor speeling and grammer, but I wrote this fast at work.
