HITCH-HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY tidbit
Here's a tidbit that I guess wouldn't really be a casting tidbit... but then again it is. Jay Roach, director of the upcoming HITCH-HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY, was recently doing an online chat and mentioned who Douglas Adams wanted to play Arthur Dent, waver of towels and all. Now the stating of this name does not mean he's got the part... it's just who the author wants to play the part and authors rarely get what they want in Hollywood. But I figured I'd put it out there for all of you folks to bandy about.

Hey there
You may know this nugget already, but when Jay Roach took part in a Yahoo chat event I questioned him about the 'Hitch-hikers guide to the
galaxy' film. The guy was annoyingly tight-lipped about it, but he did let slip that Douglas Adams was keen to get Hugh Laurie to play the part
of Arthur Dent.
Rumour? Who knows?

Leo should play Dent.
Only he could capture the absurdity of the character.

Leonardo would be a mistake. The only true thespian meant for the role would be Seth Green. Get with the times, Lew.
-
I'd like Bill Murray to play Ford Prefect. Maybe Harry can arange this for me? No pressure.

Anyone who'se seen "Black Adder" is familiar with Hugh Laurie as a comedic actor. He's brilliantly funny. At least Mr. Adams isn't thinking in the traditional Holleywood manner and trying to cast Hugh Grant for every part simply because he's British. Ah smeg it all, let's just get the bloke who plays Lister on "Red Dwarf" for Zaphod and it'll be a good day.
Cheers,
??Pseudo??

Hugh Laurie would be absolutely wonderful for Arthur, I had a complete vision of the movie unfold before me as I read the article. My sainted aunt, why didn't this occur to me before?
Laurie manages the wonderful comedic stiffupperlippness while nicely balancing it with a nice sense of helplessness. And he can act too, take a look at the meal he made out of his tiny part (2 scenes?) in SENSE AND SENSIBILITY. And if you want to see his sense of humour read THE GUN SELLER which he wrote. Ignore the dustcover comment, they are apparently about a different book. It is a nasty and thoughtful thriller written with the an incredibly sarcastic and quirky narration that leaves one of the strangest literary aftertastes I have ever enountered.
(Gee this is my second consecutive post where I have recomended books, I guess I'm revealing my lack of a cathode tube and should search for a more appropriate forum) -
Hugh Laurie? Well, to me Simon Jones will be the perfect Arthur Dent, but he'll be getting too old now, and Hugh Laurie seems like a pretty good replacement. If they can find anyone better, I'll be surprised. As for the person who suggested Lister (Craig Charles) for Zaphod. Yes. Slightly less grotesque, slightly more self-obsessed hippie. I never really imagined Zaphod as being black, but it could work. I can see that. Stephen Moore must provide the voice for Marvin. I love that paranoid android. Every time I listen to or watch an episode which he isn't in, I look forward to his next entry. And if they must have Americans in the cast, ONLY Zaphod please! Zaphod could play well as an American. Other than that, only cast Brits please. The shows and books are so reliant on the British view of life (I love the part where the ship is rendered vulnerable to attack because the computer is trying to understand why Arthur wasnts to drink tea) that to not cast Brits would render the whole movie nonsensical.
-
Hugh Laurie would be perfect as Arthur. Now, all we need is Liz Hurley for Trillian, Jeff Goldblum/Rowan Atkinson for Ford, and Michael Keaton+Bill Murray for Zaphod (he has 2 heads, remember?). And hey, Sean Connery could be a great cameo as Slartibarfast. OK, so this is fanboy dreaming...I've always wanted to see Hitchhikers done justice on the big screen. The TV series was an abonimat...abominat...was crap. Jay Rpach is the perfect director. The Austin Powers films have the same zany humour as Hitchhikers. Hey, maybe Jay could rope in Mike Myers to play my namesake, Gag Halfrunt. Oh, one more thing...somebody said Craig Charles (Lister from Red Dwarf) is black. Huh? Stay off the crack! *Gag Halfrunt*
-
It's a shame that if Hitchhikers does get made as a movie (all signs point to yes?) that many people probably will miss it as it won't appeal to everybody (Americans traditionally don't get British humour. I'm not saying that ALL Americans don't get it, but many do). I haven't read the books in a while but I do enjoy Hugh Laurie's work. I've seen a few shows he's done with Stephen Fry, as well as read his silly book The Gun Seller and watched most of the BlackAdder eps he's been in. I also caught his appearance on Friends last year when the gang went to England for Ross & Emily's wedding (he was the guy on the plane, nothing special really they just threw in British celebs haphazardly). However, for some reason I think Ben Stein (Nixon speechwriter(?)/Actor/Game Show Host) would be an interesting choice for Marvin. He sounds perpetually depressed, so why not? :)
-
stephen wright should do marvin's voice. he has the perfect monotone deadpan delivery.
i agree that jim carrey has the smile necessary to play ford prefect, but i hope that the cast is mostly-unknowns.
i can't wait to see this movie. i've never seen the BBC version, so my memory isn't tainted by something else. i've read each book...oh, something like a half-dozen times.
running out of steam. stop talking now. -
Rowan Atkinson as Ford? Heh, that'd be funny, but Rowan always comes off kind of pathetic and cute, I don't see Ford that way. When is this movie coming out again?
-
The only person who could the voice of Marvin perfectly would be Ben Stein, think about it.
-
Trillian is such a tough role to cast. Even Douglas Adams admitted that she turned out to be a pretty useless character in the whole scheme of things. Also, she HAS to be British. The oddest sounding line in the television series is the American woman who plays Trillian saying, "It was either this or back to the dole queue again on Monday." I guess they didn't realize most Americans have never "been on the dole" or "stood in a queue." Americans. We so zany! Also, Simon Moore IS the only Marvin. "I wish you'd stop trying to engage my enthusiasm because I haven't got one."
-
Ok, having actually PLAYED Arthur myself in a staged version of the radio scripts (for charity)I feel a bit of a connection to the character. (I also played Marvin in one production and Zaphod in another. Just bragging now, sorry) Laurie is screamingly funny. Try and get a hold of "A Bit of Fry and Laurie" if it's available in some obscure video dungeon, it is nothing short of brilliant. Although he's not who I pictured, I'm sure he'd be terrific. If He plays Arthur, why not Stephen Fry for Ford, make it a matched set? Originally though, my dream casting went like this.
Arthur: Jonathan Pryce or Rowan Atkinson
Ford: Richard E.Grant or Eric Idle
Zaphod: Gary Oldman or Jeff Goldblum. Or both! One head each.
Trillian: Catherine Zeta Jones (she's described as being of a darker complexion, I think she can pull it off)
Slartibartfast: Sean Connery or Ian McKellen
The Book: Patrick Stewart
Prostenic Vogan Jeltz: Rowan Atkinson or John Cleese
Marvin: Never thought of Ben Stein, that's very good. I thought Steven Wright.
Questions? Comments? Counterpoints? Then bury them under soft peat for three months and recycle them as firelighters. No really, I'm interested in your comments -
Seriously, back when Disney first snapped it up, my choices for Ford & Arthur were Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. Admittedly, I tended to see Fry as Arthur and Laurie as Ford, but I could see it the other way around, too. Hopefully, DNA will be able to get Disney to consider this, since there are not a whole lot of people funnier than Hugh Laurie.
-
To some degree, the nationality of certain characters is not too important (especially the ones who originate in outer space) but Arthur Dent *MUST* be British. Hugh Laurie would be a fine choice. Hugh Grant, despite the shudders it might invoke because he's "hot" right now, would also fit the role quite well. The suggestions of Ben Stein and Steven Wright as Marvin make me chuckle, but I happen to believe that Marvin must also be English. His dialogue is uniquely British. Ford and Zaphod and Trillian could be American (though not all three, please). Douglas Adams himself suggested Jeff Goldblum for Ford. Trillian works a bit better as a Brit, I think; Liz Hurley would certainly work, especially if Hugh Grant played Arthur and the film was directed by Roach, who worked with her on the original Austin Powers. Zaphod I have no idea for. He's one of those characters I just can't get a lock on. He seems like a bizarre cross between an incredibly shallow Hollywood type, a pothead, a stand-up comedian a la Dennis Miller, and an insane asylum inmate.
-
Hugh Laurie is FINE.And why can't the cast be all Brits? The TV series worked.Jim Carrey, well hes Canadian so I suppose he could JUST be Zaphod but Chris Barrie [Rimmer from red dwarf] should be Ford and if Stephen Moore is NOT Marvin then I think you ought to know I'll be very depressed
-
Last time i visited this site the trypods, another ex-BBC series was/is being considered by hollywood. After reworking the cult sixties series is hollywood now looking across the Atlantic at Aunty Beeb (The BBC's nickname in tellyland) for ideas and inspiration?
I mean we also have LOTR's-posters keep quoting from the beeb's radio play, Doctor Who is also being mentioned for the big screen so is Blake 7 and now Hitchikers. I know a lot of the above has been a book first but the BBC did it before Hollywood.
Dont get me wrong i'm not moaning cause i think all the stuff will make great movies.
Here's another one that hasn't been metioned in a while Day Of The Triffids a great 80's series done by the Beeb (also a movie in the 50's).
Oh gotta agree with the previous poster about Patrick Stewart as the book, good call.
-
...and i seem to be the only one who realizes that stephen moore was marvin...is marvin...and should be marvin...unless he's now defunct-ed, which would be terribly sad, but fitting. i do hope i'm not getting you down.
-
You suck!
-
I agree with you, Withnail: Trillian *is* Catherine Zeta-Jones. I just don't see how Rowan Atkinson came in - only because he's British?
-
My god! Who said Catherine Zeta-Jones for Trillian? You're brilliant! Never crossed my mind, but gorblimey she'd be perfect! As for the British/American debate... Zaphod's dialogue sounds very American, but the rest of the main characters should really be English. (And Welsh is close enough! Anyway, she's good with accents.) The Jonny Lee Miller (Sickboy) rumour I heard for Ford sounds quite interesting, but none of these guys I hear being attached to Arthur seem to click. If only Graham Chapman were still alive! On that note, I think Michael Palin would make an exquisite Slartibartfast. Zaphod's a tough one, now. I'd have to go for Jeff Bridges, who showed in "The Big Lebowski" that he can play an extremely relaxed ex-hippie better than anyone.
-
Okay, the guy who suggested Steven Wright as Marvin, you should be working on the movie. But the thing with Zaphod is that he is an American. That's how the character works - he has distinctly American attitudes as opposed to Arthur's total Britishness. Laid back versus uptight. Has anyone thought that Myers might end up playing Zephod re the obvious connection? But the only American character that comes close to that particular coolness of Zaphod's is the great Buckaroo Banzai, but Weller might be getting on a bit. You really need a young cast to bring justice to the project - take a look at the BBC version, read the book again and you get the impression they're supposed to be thirtysomething, rather than fiftysomething. Zaphod is terminally hip, remember, as Ford isn't too far off. Laurie IS getting on a bit, and let's face it, there are going to HAVE to be some NAMES in the cast. It strikes me that Robert Downey Jr might fit into the mix somewhere, maybe Zaphod, maybe even Ford. I would expect that he's downed a few Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters in his time. How about Christian Slater as Ford or Zaphod? Or Stephen Dorff? The whole 'young Nicholson' thing? Minnie Driver is the perfect Trillian as far as I'm concerned. Ted Danson as Zaphod? (sorry, I said young, didn't I? But he could do it. He DID do it for eleven years!) Craig Charles as Zaphod? Are you insane? I can hear the studio execs now. Craig WHO? Wesley Snipes as Zaphod? How about Tim Roth as Ford with Hugh Laurie as Arthur? Too old? How about Ewan McGregor as Ford? (he does bring some positive sci-fi baggage). But all this leads me back to wondering who would be a young Arthur, as opposed to a Hugh Laurie generation Arthur...? All the young Brits are so slick these days, who has screen presence and can do 'uptight ' anymore (besides Hugh Grant?) Any suggestions?
-
Catherine Zeta-Jones as Trillian? Its been a few years since I've read the book/listened to the radio plays, but isn't Trillian some sort of physicist? I cannot see Jones playing a role that requires her to play "smart".
And the more I think of Dennis Miller as Zayfod, the more I like it... their egos are about the same size. -

JIM CARREY?!? FUCKING JIM CARREY!?! I SHOULD HUNT DOWNHE MOTHE
by gary2012
Anyone who thinks that Jim Carrey is good enough to be anything in HGTTG is a fucking retard! Actually I'll make that anyone who thinks that Jim Carrey is anything but a huge steaming turd is a retard!!!
-
Hugh Laurie is a brilliant writer and performer and would be excellent for the role. I an see him as the British every-man that is Arthur Dent. I would love to see Rick Mayall as Ford Prefect. He could easily achieve that somewhat British, but not quite right feeling that I have always pictured Ford having, what with him being an alien and all. Craig Charles is a good idea for Zaphod, as Red Dwarf is one of my favorite shows, and I think that he would fit the role very well. Speaking of which, I think that if Huge Laurie doesn't get the role Chris Barrie would be an excellent alternative. Is there any place for Elexie Sayle in the story? I love hm and would love to see him in it somewhere, but I can't really think of a role.
-
First of all, if you haven't seen A Bit of Fry and Laurie, go get it now, it's one of the funniest things ever done. Laurie is perfect.
For Zaphod, only one man has ever been in my mind, ever since I first read the books -- Bruce Campbell.
Zaphod always seem written as the American surrounded by Brits and confused by them...and Bruce already has the two headed thing down. -
...that in order to keep kids from hitchhiking they are renaming the film to "The Person's Guide To The Galaxy".
Seriously, though, I personally think Chris Barrie would make a smashing Zaphod (even if he IS English).
I guess that's all I have to say... oh, wait a sec. Roach? This guy has the talent of a vomit ice cube (what the hell am I talking about?) They shoulda given this one to Terry Gilliam or someone else with a sense of style... -
Gag - you should be the one getting off the crack. Craig Charles IS black. Well actually he's a half-caste but that's a really horrible way to describe such a nice guy. Oh and before you cast any doubts I've actually met the guy after one of his rare stand ups here in Britain. Believe me - he is not caucasian.
As for whether he'd be right for Zaphod? Nah. I agree with all the posts talking about how Zaphod should be American. He WAS always portrayed as a flash, brash, no-holds-barred American. -
And I think he played the general in the Madonna version of Evita.
He's a bit older than Dent, but they can fix that easily enough.
Oh and I can definately see Jim Carrey in a slimy green frog suit reading Vogon Poetry to a captive Dent and Prefect.
Or even Mr. Proffer - Carrey could take a part like that and really make it something fun. -
...would relegate the film to a minor curiousity.
The sad fact of life is that the big money is in the American audiences. If you want the film to have more of an impact than a PBS telethon, then two or three well placed American actors, to augment the stars, must be present.
Also, when casting Brits (and having lived there for a number of years, I know there are many talented actors), they should really keep to those who have some recognition in the States. (I'm not talking about those the fanboys and geeks know, I'm talking about general public recognition.)
Captain Red Beard -
Zaphod: Gary Oldman and Jeff Goldblum I like; I like that a lot, Withnail. But I was thinking more along the lines of Qwiblet. Jeff Bridges would be perfect for Zaphod. But, my friend, you should think a little longer and be more ambitious. Jeff Bridges as Zaphod's left head and Beau Bridges as his right head. Now with a little CGI that would be amazing. Also a some knowlegde for you from the UK, Eternal. Yes Peter Jones is still alive, regularly appearing on comedy panel shows on the radio here, and is just like the book in real life - dignified incomprehension at all times. A genuinely funny old man. Any other choice for the voice of The Book would be foolhardy indeed in sight of these facts. And speaking of radio, if there is anyone out there who thinks of themself as a fan but hasn't heard the BBC radio series they should remedy this at once. The radio series is the original Hitchhiker's, it was written before the books and the TV series. Oh, and it's the best of the whole lot.I kid you not. Comic hysteria, like having your brain bashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick. Seek it out, available on tape and CD from the BBC. Life? Don't talk to me about life.
-
Trillian was totally mis-cast in the TV series, unless her lines change (tampering with the script???oh God, Nooooooo!!) she should be played by a Brit. But I think that Jeff Goldblum for Zaphod would be kewl - he's class and is the master of one-liners. Hugh Laurie's a good bet for Arthur and I think someone like Terrence Stamp for Slartibartfast would be cool too. As for a role for Alexi Sayle - hows about the cow in the restaurant at the end of the universe?? I can just picture it now...
-
I'll probably get my ass kicked for this, but, hey. Why not.
Arthur Dent would be a perfect role for Rowin Atkinson to showcase his looks of utter dumbfoundedness.
Ford Prefect would be a good role for Jeff Goldblum, true... but I hafta go with John Cleese on this one... He simply rocks and can make anyone think they're an imbicile.
Zaphod would be a great role for Jim Carrey. I know, I know but he did this kind of thing in the Mask and the first twenty minutes of Liar Liar. A completely self absorbed assertive know it all. And I think he could do the two headed thing easily. Especially if he can pull off the multi-personality role he's been attached to in the Farlley bros. pic "Me Myself and Irene".
Marvin? Steven Wright. 'Nuff said.
Trillian-British: Liz Hurley. American: Heather Graham.
Well, that's it for me. See you.
-
Carey Elwes. Plain & simple.....
-
OK, we're all looking for somebody different to play Arthur. So, I'll put my two cents in: How about Tim Roth? Compare his role from "Four Rooms" and Arthur Dent. I'd say that the character traits are there, they just need to be transfered from a hotel to a Vogon Poetry Reading, or the bridge of the Heart of Gold. Any thoughts, questions, comments????
-
This is a minor part, but I'd love to see Sir Alec Guiness as Slartibartfast, and I think he'd jump at the chance to spoof his Obi-Wan persona. Besides that, he's a great British comedic actor, for anyone who's seen his non-SW roles.
-
I think a Jeff Goldblum/Dennis Miller Zaphod would be a sight to
behold. The trouble with Craig Charles is that he's not funny. Although, yes, it would
infuriate people, Hugh Grant might
not make a bad Dent. And I've always wanted Tim Roth for Ford.
It is sort of a shame Terry Gilliam won't be directing this, isn't it? I think it's much better
suited for him than Fear and Loathing ever was.
-
...perfect! So far that seems the only decent casting for that part that I have heard. Laurie and Fry as the leads, oh please, oh please, oh please! (Go read Fry's brilliant "Making History")
-
Is there anything more American than getting Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey back together on the big screen?
-
This guy will be the BEST Arthur Dent. He's a great subtle comic actor. Everyone who is complaining should check out the Fry & Laurie video tapes at their local video store (in the British TV section.)
-
Here are my ideas for the casting of a HHGTTG film - Arthur Dent - Hugh Grant (Easily recognisable to a world audience as slightly bumbling Englishman) Ford Prefect - Alan Cumming (Goldeneye, Eyes Wide Shut)or Paul McGann, Zaphod Beeblebrox - Antonio Banderas (In Zorro mode) Kevin Bacon, or Ben Chapman with his Thin Red Line american accent, Trillian - Samantha Janus, and as the voice of that Paranoid Android - Will Self. I also think that Marvin should be a man in a suit rather than some CGI thing.
I think Douglas Adams should also produce a rap single for the movie with DMX and Alec Guiness on Vocals. Alec Guiness is a bad mutha and all you kids should stop writing to him about Obi Wan cause it's making him a bit crazy. I know cause I challenged him in the street to a lightsaber fight and he wet himself. That's not true. -
Arthur Dent: Rowan Atkinson
Ford: Rik Mayall
Trillian = Kate Winslet
Slartibartfast = JOHN CLEESE!!!
Marvin: Steven Wright
Zaphod: is there a wayans brother we don't know about who could play this?
-
Peril-sensitive sunglasses ON:
Jim Carrey - computer & doors on the Heart of Gold, James Earl Jones - Deep Thought, John Cleese - narration and/or voice of Guide. -
Thinking of the american budget outlay only Arthur and Trillion are going to be brits - and knowing Hollywood all of the US actors playing aliens will be bankable stars (rather than superstars) and one will probably be bla.. sorry african american
So I would guess Chris Tucker or Eddie Murphy as Zaphod, with Dan Ackroyd as Slarti...
For me Jane Horrocks would be a fantastic Trillion though perhaps a bit young to play a girlfriend (?) of Arthur.
Mike Myers IS a superstar but bearing in mind his much-repeated love for British comedy AND that the new HH director has just done the Austin movies he might be in the frame. Could Adams deal with his add-libbing though ?

I wish that Jay Roach would read this Talkback. There are just some awesome ideas going around here. Cary Elwes as Arthur... wow, totally out of the blue, but give him dark hair and a frumpy look -- a la Liar Liar, perhaps -- and that's just crazy enough to work! He's uptight! He's funny! He's good at looking daft! Wow! And Alan Cumming as Ford, another great idea. Boy, do I sound enthusiastic! Wow! Now Ewan McGregor wouldn't be half bad as Zaphod, with excellent American accent in tow. I can't say I like the idea of two actors playing the ol' Former Galactic President, though. Zaphod is a single character. He may have two brains, but he's got one mind. I say just a nice, high-class prosthetic sweetened up by CGI in post-production, not two people. I still like Zeta-Jones for Trillian. And I didn't say Jeff Daniels, I said Jeff Bridges.
-
Arthur HUGH LAURIE is OK
Ford CHRIS BARRIE
Zaphod JIM CARREY
Trillian CATHERINE ZETA JONES
Marvin STEPHEN MOORE

The Book PETER JONES or JOHN CLEESE
Deep Thought BRIAN BLESSED [sorry I put him in every wishlist I make] -
Actually, the guy pictured (Hugh Laurie) looks like a good choice. He was also Wooster in the British TV series JEEVES AND WOOSTER, and Doug Adams has always cited P. G. Wodehouse as a major influence. Stephen Fry might make a good Marvin, come to think of it.
My other ideas:
Ford- Jeff Goldblum. I believe Adams himself suggested it, and I agree.
Zaphod- James Woods. He's cool, fast talkin', and I can totally see him delivering lines like "Ten out of ten for style, minus several million for good thinking", or "Zaphod Beeblebrox, this is a very large drink. Hi."
Trillian- Jane Leeves. Nice mature age, but still hot. -
Yes Jim Carrey could do a great Zaphod - but he's a headline star and unless you want HHGTTG to be Zaphod's story instead of Arthur's I'd steer well clear. A comedian would suit the part, Chris Rock, Denis Leary maybe. Or just someone you believe has the ego - Christian Slater / Wesley Snipes? Laurie would be great as Arther - and deserves to be a movie star far more than Hugh Grant! Jeff Goldblum as Ford, nice. Also Mike Myers or Ben Stiller could work.
Finally, the one North American who could play Arthur - William H Macy -
What the hell do you tell about Jim Carrey? Haven't you seen the "Truman Show"? You fucking idiot!!!!!! He made the best performance of the year 1998! So you are not very intelligent, you bastard, you lemondick, you cocksucking shithead!
-
I thought it would be cool if the Kids in the Hall comedy troupe did the HHGttG movie. Scott Thompson could be Zaphod, Kevin McDonald could be Marvin, Mark McKinney could be Arthur Dent, Dave Foley could be Ford Prefect, and Bruce McCulloch could be Trillian.
hehe
As for the suggestion that the British English in the dialog would be lost on American audiences, I am the exception. I watch too much BBC comedy. I admit it. It's taught me a few colloquialisms. Still, there's no reason that dialog can't be rewritten for the American release. The British version can say the line about the dole que, and the U. S. release can say something about welfare or the line at the unemployment office.
-
It's just my humble opinion, but I think John Cleese should have at least a cameo in the movies. He already was in Starship Titanic (as the voice of the bomb), ans since he's worked with Adam's before I could see it happening. I think he'd make a good Slartibartfast.

I just finished reading the series for the first time, and from Zaphod's first intro where he stands up in front of all the scientists and says "Hi", I was imagining him look like George Clooney all through the rest. I don't know how British Zaphod's supposed to be, but I think that would kick ass.
