It's all a popularity contest. The modern pasteurized/processed corporate bands get the VMA like the "It's MY TURN award." never mind musical talent, meaningful lyrics or composition. It's all about who can yell out nursery rhymes about dicks, ho's and bling. True songsmiths and epic bands get ignored in favor of who generates the most revenue for MTV inc. It's the barest of meritocracies. It's about who made the flashiest video/confused wet dream and sold commercial ad space. Look at the bands that appeal to teenyboppers and chicks and you have your winners. Largest mass audience=best video. It's all manufactured, formula irrelevance.

In one of the biggest gaffes in music video history, the Beastie Boys (directed by Spike Jonze) greatest video ever made, "Sabotage" never won, so there's a category about "Videos that Never won But should have" and Sabotage is in there. This needs to be corrected. I'm not even a Beastie Boys fan, but that video is fucking genius. Foo Fighters Everlong is in there too, directed by Michael Gondry and that's a cool pick, but, really, it HAS to be Sabotage. HAS TO BE.

I've been trying to watch Against Me's Thrash Unreal for months on youtube and it keeps getting pulled down. Only site I see it on is AOL music... and that's for US customers only. It used to be great to watch MTV (for the videos) and then watch artistic (and yes sometimes just popular) videos be awarded for what was put into them. Now it is just a show and to be honest who actually has a shot at winning, when so many videos go unplayed.
How can we really gauge true artistic talent anymore? MTV is all about reality shows, why not just change their awards over to something like that? That would then make the whole West?Swift think more sensible in that venue.

Look, I am sure you have a sister, a girlfriend...whatever, my point is this--you have heard them sing before, and I bet you have to admit, they can probably sing just as good or better than Taylor Swift. Now, we both know that when we are talking talent, you shouldn't be easily able to say that when comparing someone you know, to a so-called superstar or mega star except in the most uniquely rare and unusual case, and Taylor Swift, well, you could compare her vocal abilities to most any girl chosen at random, and they probably, at least most, could meaure-up to, and or, surpass her--and that is the sad realization of all this. I go back to my comparing Taylor Swift and Beyonce to one of the Jonas Brothers...to Eddie Van Halen, there is just no comparison in terms of talent--and that is what I think Kanye was trying to say in protest of the award selection process. He didn't have the proper words to do it, nor did he deliver a side by side comparison...other than his statement, but his effort...although self serving, was accurate, and thus worthy. As far as industry conspiracies go, I have been in the industry, on and off since I was a kid--and these conspiracies are real, I have witnessed them. Once I was directly told by a record exec of a very serious criminal conspiracy, or should I say, I was witness to it--it was like something straight-out of a movie, but very real.
