Disney & Guillermo Double Dares You to Bring Your Kids To Something... Spookier than usual!

Published at:  Sep 12, 2009 4:08:33 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... I had a conversation with Guillermo back a couple years about how he hoped that this would be a deal that would actually one day happen. Disney has been flirting with Guillermo for years. With good cause. Most of you know the Guillermo of the smaller, more artsy tender horror-fantasies. Still others know Guillermo from his big HELLBOY films and BLADE II. But there's another side of Guillermo Del Toro. One that is deeply passionate about Walt Disney Company. Specifically their animated fare, but also their films like 20,000 LEAGUES and TREASURE ISLAND. Those Disney films were wonderfully influential in a way none of us have seen from Guillermo yet... save for perhaps that image of the Elemental dying in HELLBOY II. We're about to see something amazing there. Here's the press release....

DISNEY TEAMS UP WITH ACCLAIMED FILMMAKER GUILLERMO DEL TORO TO CREATE ANIMATED FEATURES WITH CHILLS AND THRILLS UNDER THE NEW LABEL “DISNEY DOUBLE DARE YOU”

Anaheim, California -- September 11, 2009 -- The Walt Disney Studios, in collaboration with acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth,” “The Hobbit”), is launching a new production label called Disney Double Dare You, to create new animated films full of chills and thrills for audiences of all ages, it was announced today at the D23 Expo by Dick Cook, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. All films will be produced under the guidance of del Toro, who originated the concept and the design of DDY and who will also direct certain projects. The first project in development for the new label is called “Trollhunters,” an original del Toro story which he will produce.

Commenting on the announcement, Cook said, “Guillermo is a brilliant and visionary filmmaker, and we’re excited to be launching this new label with him. His knowledge and appreciation for Disney films, along with his penchant for creating worlds of fantasy, presented a great opportunity for us to explore a whole new genre of filmmaking for moviegoers of all ages. We have admired Guillermo’s imaginative approach to filmmaking for some time, and now we’re proud to be working with him to create films full of imaginative delights and lots of thrills at the same time.”

Del Toro added, “As a director, I love to take audiences into fantastic new worlds and provide them with some anxious moments in the process. It is part of the Disney canon to create thrilling, unforgettable moments and villains in all their classic films. It is my privilege for DDY to continue in this tradition. To partner up with The Walt Disney Studios, with the support of Dick Cook and John Lasseter, is to belong to a storytelling partnership that I admire deeply. It is a true honor. I look forward to coming up with fresh and original stories that will take Disney films in a whole new direction. The emphasis is on fun, and we have some great ideas already on the storyboards.”

Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth received six Academy Award® nominations in 2007, including one for his original screenplay, and went on to win three awards. That film also received a BAFTA Award for Best Film not in the English language. His other directing credits include “Hellboy,” “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” “The Devil’s Backbone,” “Cronos,” and “Mimic,” among others. Del Toro is currently directing back-to-back feature film adaptations of the Tolkien classic, “The Hobbit,” for release in 2011 and 2012.

This is their way of suckering Del Toro into a development deal because he's about to do The Hobbit and if that movie is a huge hit then they hope to get him on his follow up picture. It would be fucking awesome if a major studio actually made some animated Horror flicks but it's not fucking likely.

    Del Toro needs a writer

    by flynn_lives

He really, really, really needs to work with a writer. Hellboy II was exactly the same story as Blade II with a script that worked half as well as Blade II's. I like what he has going on visually. His screenplays are messes that indulge in unforgivable cliches and contain loads of characters who exist for no reasons other than to deliver exposition, make plot happen, or look cool. Look at the part in Hellboy when Johann tells the audience they'll have to wait for movie 3 before he'll explain why he's motivated to do anything he does. Nobody gets a pass for writing that lazy.

I just finished an MA dissertation on him, and usually that level of work on anyone or thing would lead me to hate them due to over exposure, but I still love the guy. and FLYNN_LIVES, while Ill admit the Hellboy films are somewhat hokey at times (particularly storywise) the writing on Cronos, Devils Backbone and Pan's is pretty faultless...

and Labyrinth proved how great he could be, but right now he is way overextended. He's not superhuman but if you look at his entry in IMDB.com, you would swear he thinks he is. I'm worried he's going to be doing a lot of Hellboy IIs, which means movies where you can spot the movie -- look, there's Men in Black, there's Princess Mononoke, there's that scene from Star Wars. They won't be that original and a lot of these projects are going to crash and burn as a result. Less is more in other words.

    by the_first_rule_of_fight_club

i think the only thing i ever liked of his was "mimic". everything else - and i mean everything else - i have ever seen of his has been garbage. whether it's spanish language crap like "backbone" or "labyrinth" or big hollywood crap like "hellboy" or "blade 2" (perhaps the worst sequel to a good movie ever made), this guy has ZERO talent. it's one thing for harry to keep tea-bagging him but that doesn't change anything. he's still awful. i'm still surprised that i liked "mimic". i remember thinking at the time that this guy has real potential. boy, was i wrong. and, yeah, as some posters above have expressed, you are right to be worried about "the hobbit", people. in this moron's hands, i don't see how that's not going to suck.

    by deviant apex

I personally think it is a good direction for disney, but as a few have said before, I think it will become problematic. The douchebag parents who want their children growing up without "negative" influences, but let their kids watch gay shit like high school musical (even though it is well known nude pictures of a star actress showed up online), will more than likely boycott this film. What I would love is for these animated pieces to be somewhere between say Goosebumps and Tales from the Crypt. Not essentially gorey, but still fucking scary. One creepy TFTC episode I vaguely remember was about a ventriloquist who actually didnt carry his voice, but instead he had this little creature on the end of his arm. I keep thinking the guy ended up as the dummy in the end. Needless to say, Disney may just be doing more harm to themselves, but in the end Im all for it.

Seriously though, fuck you dead inside haters. Listening to you guys tear down every genre director alive for failing to live up to your completely unrealistic expectations of novelty and creativity (like any of you could make anything as creative as the worst 5 minutes of even Mimic) makes me wonder why you guys even bother to watch movies? Now if this actually works out, this is something to really get excited about. I don't always like Del Toro's movies - one or two just never gelled for me - but he's got an amazing style, huge imagination and the ones I do like, I LOVE. Having him out there working to fuck up the minds of young children whilst giving us a thrill too is never going to be a bad thing, and let's face it - kids these days don't get kids horror flicks like Monster Squad, Gremlins, Critters etc. They NEED this to ween them away from being sucked in by the mountains of banal Twilight shit aimed at them.

"Felt" like they were directed by Spielberg? Are you high? Not one of those felt like a Spielberg movie to me at the time. And much though I love the film, Goonies is the only one you could say was 'similar' to a genuine Spielberg directed film due to the subject matter, but even then, it never felt like he directed it. Spielberg's producer-credit films felt very, very different to his directed films to me. That said, I wish he still had the style he had in the 80's. He still makes great movies, with the obvious exception of the skullfuckingly awful Indy 4, but fuck me, that magic he had is gone.

It probably wasn't clear, but I meant that this isn't the 80s (and it especially isn't the 90s) in the sense that there's less of a cultural push than ever for "protecting" kids from horror concepts. There was a time when someone threatening a boycott of a "Satanic" series like Harry Potter would have been treated as a credible threat, at least as a PR liability. Those films have grossed billions of dollars now and no one even remembers the way elements of the far right complained when the series started to gain popularity.

    by revenge_of_fett

It was pretty to look at, but the story was pretty predictable. I've only seen a few minutes of Delgo, but this reminded me of that. Also there were some weird plot holes. So man and these giant machines all wiped each other out except for this robodog and these little beanie babies?SPOILER!The girl is a super-ninja (somehow) and dispatches the dog in about 20 seconds. Why didn't she do that a long time ago?Plus the whole "soul" subplot just doesn't make a lot of sense. A lot of dues ex machina type stuff just shoved in there for plot convenience. It's not a bad movie, I enjoyed it, but emerged from the theater with a pretty blase feeling towards it.

I can see where D.Vader is coming from. I can see the difference, in directing styles, but he said as a kid they felt like Spielberg directed. In the 80's he had a strong influence over his productions. All the films had high production values, they had the best people in every department, just like the films he directed. Spielberg approved the hiring of all department heads and was often on set suggesting shots. On some of the films, he did some of the directing. Spielberg was second unit director and directed the entire opening jail break of The Goonies, including the introduction of the kids, and the film was edited by Michael Kahn, Spielberg's editor. Spielberg started out only doing second unit directing on Poltergeist, besides producing of course. the dynamics changed with Tobe Hooper and he ended up directing more and more of the main unit. Poltergeist was also edited by Michael kahn and that film, more than any other of his "producing only films" does feel like Spielberg directed it. Robert Zemeckis style was always similar to Spielbergs, so BTTF really had a Spielberg feel.

I said that "as a kid" I always thought those were Spielberg films, and they still do. They're Spielberg-lite. And I forgot to add Poltergeist to that list as well, though for all intents and purposes, he did direct that one.

Eh I'm hoping Guillermo doesn't leave too much...

    by thewaqman

of an imprint on The Hobbit. His style certainly has alot of fans here (which I found out the hard way), but it just doesn't seem to fit right with the Jackson-LOTR way. One person here said his style was more real, while Guillermo's was ethereal. I hope WETA and Jackson have him on reins creatively. These disney films should be quite good. I'm not fond of him as a writer and find his stories to be almost secondary, but he's got good style. And it would be cool to see what he brings to Disney animation....preferably with someone else writing the script.

    Mimic

    by turingtestee

One of my favorite of the giant bug movies. Gets silly towards the end (I think every character risks themselves for someone else in the last 20 minutes or so), and I honestly wanted it to rip off both Aliens and give us a queen, and rip off The Swarm and give us a huge cloud of bugs eating NY.The WWII bomber section of Heavy Metal is very definitely animated horror.

DEL TORO TO DIRECT EVERY FUCKING MOVIE

    by lockesbrokenleg

  • Sep 12, 2009 6:24:24 PM CDT

Del Toro should make a Matterhorn movie.

    by dailysportspages

With the Yeti being a great way for Del Toro to flex his monster making muscle.

Its A Small World: Those puppet things are pretty creepy if you ask me. And that song starts getting under your skin in a very warped way, kinda like if it was being played by the Joker at his most terrifyingly batshit.

Tower of Terror: A group of people stuck inside an old Hollywood hotel that is haunted by the ghosts of dead celebrities from the past, lots of traps and clausterphobic pieces... right up Del Toro's alley.

    D. Vader - RETURN TO OZ

    by thusspakespymunk

Yes, parents did indeed boycott both RETURN TO OZ and THE BLACK HOLE, the latter for its religious ending, the former for its "inappropriate scenes that scared my little Timmy." Whem Momby took off her heads, parents were left with a theater of screaming children who they had to drag out of the theater in agony. So, parents, being vengeful idiots, boycotted the movie saying Disney's name and the rating did not indicate just how disturbing and terrifying the film would be or that it would feature severed heads. The result was that Disney backed off as a sort of 'last straw" (this coupled with bad box-office for Disney's "dark" movies) from making scary movies for kids. What worries me isn't that they'll be making horror - I couldn't be more thrilled. But in terms of long-lasting success for Disney, this is a classic bad move. I'd love to say "Yeah, making horror is a great idea!" And that's what I think. But the fact is parents today are even bigger morons than parents then, incapable of accepting anything that differs. In other words, from Disney they want BEAUTY AND THE BEAST over and over and nothing else. Making horror will result in a massive backlash and may hurt Disney. And I do love Disney, too.

Or how bout a Tomorrowland movie?

    by dailysportspages

Tomorrowland: This could be Del Toro's big sci-fi epic. You can take the names from the Disney attractions and use them as names for locations in the movie.

Space Mountain could be the name of a space station central to the story. With fighter pods designed after the rockets you sit in, and the launch sequence designed after the one in the ride.
Space Station X-1 - could be its official designation, but its called Space Mountain by its citizens based on how it looks.

Golden Zephyr - could be the name of their "Millennium Falcon".
EO -could be the designation used for Executive Officer, instead of the usual XO... it would be a nice nod to Captain EO.
PeopleMover - could be the name of a device used in the space station to shuttle people to and fro.
Rocket Rods - could be the name of a restaurant inside the space station.
Astro Orbitor could be the name of a satellite system used in the movie.
Starcade - could be a hologram type simulator used for training.

    DDY = Marvel Part 2

    by boogel

This is just the next part of this new Disney/Pixar/Marvel story. Everyone focused on the A list characters when the Marvel story broke. But marvel has a basement full of second string characters and stories published under the Marvel brand. Just think how much fun it would be to see something like Strange Toasters on the big screen. If you could keep this DDY somewhat autonomous from the Disney bureaucracy this could be great. There is no reason DDY couldn't produce something like MirrorMask every year and never spend more than 10-30 per picture. If I remember right the Henson kids were able to get MirrorMask to the theatres at well under ten million. I would love to look back a few years from now and see a bunch of Del Toro/DDY movies sitting next to Dark Crystal and Gremlins.

    by tomonicker

But I agree, this looks like a major over-extension, unless his involvement will be more figure-headly. HellBoy 3 needs to be done at some point doesn't it? I think some are overly critical of Guillermo but they're certainly entitled to say their opinion.

    Del Toro Unleashed!

    by fatjesuschrysler

I can understand why people want Del Toro in check for The Hobbit, wanting the films to mesh and what not. I say let him of the chain! Jacksons LOTR was a nice classical telling of the story and I've always liked how he treated the movies as a historical epic rather than a fantasy one, but let Del Toro do his thing. The man obviously has a huge imagination, let him run rampant on middle-earth! Really. Prince Nuada from Hellboy 2 was infinately cooler than any elf in LOTR(Legolas) and I hope his Elves in The Hobbit are AT LEAST that cool! Fantasy is what this guy does, so for chrissakes let him fuckin do it! Also, is anyone really gonna be confused or care if the movies look a little different? Probably not.

Disney has learned from its mistakes.

    by royston lodge

These recent moves really encourage me to believe that Disney has learned from its mistakes and will emerge as a real creative force in Hollywood. They seem to have gotten the message that the corporation's strength is in distribution and marketing, not in the creative side. So, turn as much responsibility over creative to the creators, and let corporate do what corporate does best - make sure the product gets on the screens and has enough marketing power behind it to make enough profit to keep making movies.
    I think Walt would approve.

    by violator90

There were a bunch of creepy movies that were great back in the day; when being a kid didn't mean that you were safeguard from everything in the world. Disney use to have some creepy movies that were still fun. Now that the Mouse has Marvel, why not add Del Toro for some good spooky films. But as some people already sad it, lets hopet the Mouse keeps his over-sized white mits off Del Toro anc Co. and we might get some quality scary movies.

    Creepshow!

    by chuckimania

One of the reasons Creepshow is one of my favorite horror movies is because of the cool animation sequences; if they could somehow make the animations resemble that then I think they'd have something, but if this whole series revolves around Goofy shit bagging some old mans porch as a Halloween prank it'll bomb miserably.
