Is Michael Jackson's CAPTAIN EO Set To Return?? Seems So...

Published at:  Sep 11, 2009 4:00:01 PM CDT

Merrick here...

For a few weeks now we've been hearing indications that the George Lucas produced, Francis Ford Coppola directed, James Horner scored, Michael Jackson starring CAPTAIN EO (in 3-D) would be making a return to Disney kingdoms early next year - per suddenly renewed public interest in Mr. Jackson's work (i.e. to exploit his death).

As of yet, there's been no official announcement towards such ends - although scuttlebutt says work is already underway prepping the theater(s?) in which EO will be hosted. When will we know for sure? According to Al Lutz's MiceAge site, we should see a definitive announcement tomorrow.

Editor's Note 9/11: Captain EO Update - Bob Iger kicked off the lavish D23 Expo with no major news and a rather coy answer on the Captain EO topic, as apparently Burbank is furious both the Star Tours and EO info leaked ahead of Jay Rasulo’s planned announcements on Saturday. Meanwhile, executives at WDI and TDA continue to prep for the January opening of EO, and gab about it rather openly. The technical tests for EO this week in the closed Honey I Shrunk Theater went well, and now it’s just up to Jay to either announce on Saturday or hold the news until after new year’s. - Al Lutz

...says MiceAge HERE.

I've never actually seen CAPTAIN EO on a big screen - many of our readers probably haven't. As such, I'm guessing this might be a unique opportunity for a number of folks out there. Although, imagining the musical number featured in the second embed below...on the big screen...in 3-D...does make me question my resolve a bit.

when I was about 12 years old, guess that makes me pretty fucking unique, special and just all around awesome. I was crazy over Star Wars and MJ at the time but god damnit if that wasn't an epic dissapointment of film on every possible level, special effects, sound, writing, directing, song, and especially the horrendous acting. MJ's performance really brought home the fact that he needed to stick to the moon-walking and singing thang. Anyone else remember the talk of him playing the part of Edgar Allan Poe in some bio movie? Hmm maybe it was Sly Stallone that I'm thinking of, or was it mulled over by the both of them?...

Saw Captain Eo at Disneyland the night it opened

    by greggers

A dumb teenager, not exactly what you'd call a Michael Jackson fan, but my friends and I didn't want to miss the chance of being at Disneyland at 2 o'clock in the morning. Once we were there, I guess we felt duty bound to participate in the event, so we waited the million years it took to get in to see it.

The crowd was friendly despite the wait. The 3-d seemed pretty cool. The special effects were sufficiently Lucastacular. Michael seemed disappointingly feminine. (Would it have killed him to butch it up to, say, Thriller-level?) And I found Anjelica Houston surprisingly attractive at the end. (Special effects, indeed. Sorry, Angelica.)

Still have the commemorative t-shirt in the attic. I never really wore it, but it managed to get pit stains nonetheless.

    by mundungus

I would pass some off hours by altering my perceptions then going through Epcot to watch Captain EO and then the nightly fireworks around the lake in the center of the park. The firework show was such a better experience. I think I dropped EO from the routine after 2-3 viewings and only went back if I had brought a guest who wanted to see it.

Seeing it now, looks worse than a B movie, and there are no smoke generators or special lighting make up for the suckiness.

I wonder what that park is like now?

Will be cool for EO to have a return engagement, but honestly, Magic Journeys was the best damn 3D flick Disney ever had in its parks. More so than being somewhat dated, Disney pulled EO from the parks in CA & FL in the early 90's after MJ started catching heat for his "interest" in young boys (& a chimp). However, I saw it at Disneyland Paris after that -- the French apparently had no problem with a potential pedophile -- as long as he saved the world with song

I didn't like Captain EO in the 80s when Michael Jackson was still black and human. I don't want it coming back now. It wasn't enjoyable then and now would be getting put in simply because of the surge in interest surrounding his death. Let him rest in peace and let Disney find something new to do instead.

MICHAEL JACKSON DID NOT ABUSE ANY CHILDREN

    by bringingsexyback

When he died I joined the chorus of MJ bashers too. Had a lot of fun at his expense.

But then I did some research and I am convinced he was genuine in his affection for children and he helped untold numbers of them. Make-A-Wish Foundation made numerous supervised trips to Neverland, all gratis. They would not have continued to do so if there was any founded suspicion of wrong doing.

He was a unique individual. That much is true. A real tragic figure, but certainly not a villain. Quite the opposite.

How the hell do you know what he did or didn't do? Maybe the make a wish foundation went there because he was shelling them out boatloads of money and due to him never getting a court appointed "GUILTY" verdict, they figured "why not consider to do so?" I'm not saying he did or didn't, (like you are,) but don't just make assumptions... He shared his bed with children, more than one said he did do these things, and he was definitely an odd person. Go watch that documentary called 'Living With Michael Jackson' then come back and tell us how much you doubt he'd ever do anything weird again.

Saw Captain Eo when I was 8

    by bramton1

Near the end, there's some kind of crash, and they pumped mist into the theater to look like smoke from the crash. I thought we were being poisoned and held my breath.

Wow a lot of hate for Captain EO..

    by nuking the fridge

Am I the only guy that loved this flick? Come on folks, it was the mid 80's. And this was cutting edge back then. If I am correct, Angelica Huston's bad ass villaness came before the Borg was introduced in Star Trek Nex Gen. She was bad ass, and kinda hot in a weird SM/Cyber type of way. This flick was awesome and it played in Disneyland for decade if I am correct. The sound was awesome, great edits, good music, laser, and smoke blasting the audience. One of the greatest cinematic experiences when I bailed on my family and watched this flick by myself. Awesome stuff. Love Captain EO.

Yes to Captain EO, but no to Song of the South?

    by snake foreskin

Let me get this straight: Disney will re-release the beyond mediocre work of a sick, putrid child molester, but they refuse to allow the oscar-winning performance in a wonderful family film to be seen anymore? Tlak about having their priorities screwed up. Song of the South was a wonderful film. It was beautifully done and still holds great meaning. Captain EO was a load of crap when it came out originally. It is only made more putrid by Michael Jackson's perverse and pathological treatment of the very people Disney seeks to exploit: children. Up yours, Disney. Up yours.

I'd much rather play the PS1 podracing game on my PC with an emulator, especially if I had a set of VR goggles.
