Learn At Last About The Two New NBC Projects Bryan Fuller Left HEROES To Create!!

Published at:  Sep 09, 2009 11:15:58 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Bryan Fuller exited the writing staff of “Heroes” in mid-June to write two pilots for NBC, and he’s finally offering details on the projects.

Neither pilot script appears to have a sci-fi or fantasy component -- a shift for Fuller, who got his start on “Star Trek: Voyager” and earlier this decade scripted excellent failed pilots based on Stephen King’s “Carrie” and Mike Mignola’s “The Amazing Screw-On Head.”

Fuller (creator of “Dead Like Me,” “Wonderfalls” and “Pushing Daisies”) and director Bryan Singer (“X-Men,” “X2,” “Superman Returns,” “Valkyrie,” “House”) are collaborating on a proposed hourlong project based on Augusten Burroughs’ 2000 novel “Sellevision,” which deals with, among other things, a home-shopping channel host driven to a Valium addiction by a fan’s critical e-mail.

Fuller’s second NBC pilot script is for a prospective workplace sitcom titled “No Kill,” about an animal shelter that doesn’t destroy its tenants.

Major digression! I am hugely amused by the Fuller/Singer collaboration because at one time I had difficulty remembering which of the two Bryans (they’re both successful Hollywood fortysomething sci-fi homosexuals) was which. (During this same general era I kept confusing also Singer’s heterosexual “X-Men”/”Superman Returns” sci-fi singer-actor James Marsden with heterosexual “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” sci-fi singer-actor James Marsters.) End major digression!

    Two things...

    by yesiamaplant

    1) That Carrie pilot sucked terrible bad, boss.
    2) I can't imagine at what stage of either Bryan's careers one could have legitimately confused the two, Singer having been a film maker of note for about ten years longer than Fuller has been a TV writer/producer of note. Unless you're trying to imply that when talking about film/television personalities you refer to them by their first names and sexual orientations almost exclusively. Now the Marsden/Marsters thing? That I can understand. Throw in Jason Marsden, and you have a real clusterfuck of names right there.

    by starwarsredux

Perhaps Fuller wasn't as instrumental to "Heroes" as everybody thought. Between this and his twee-supernatural crap like "Pushing Daisies" and "Wonderfalls", it doesn't sound like he's had all that many cool ideas. Fuck'im and move on.

then again, i never would have guessed that 'girl in gift shop talks to toy animals' or 'pie maker with special powers plays detective' would make great shows either, so i'll definitely be watching.

The Homeshopping thing could be great dramedy

    by ev1ldead

on Showtime, HBO, AMC or F/X but on a network chances are high that it either sucks or flops. The sitcom doesn't sound to interesting but that counts for almost all comedies. Could be Parks and Recreations bad or The Office good.

I didn't mind too much when I heard he was leaving Heroes because I figured his own show would be better, but this doesn't sound like anything I would watch. Now I wish he would have just stuck with Heroes to make it watchable again. The promos make it look like another season of the "they just want to be normal" bullshit that so destroyed the last season.

    a) These both sound positively horrible. Like in a Relic Hunter kind of way. AND b) Herc...no offense but you're a little bit of an R-tard if you can't tell the difference between James Marden and James Marsters. Come to think of it that's fairly offensive...so nevermind about the 'No Offense' element. :P

before going off on what a bad idea it is. I think Sellevision was a very funny, offbeat book. I can definitely seeing it be more of a "30 Rock" type of show. And trust me, Fuller was the ONLY reason "Heroes" was palatable.

Fuller couldn't lick Kurt Sutter's balls

    by dead snoopy

every quirky thing Fuller creates withers and dies like a bad hero sandwich on Homer Simpson's nightstand...meanwhile Sutter's contributions to The Shield & creation of Sons of Anarchy blaze trails. Maybe if we gave Fuller less credit for being Fuller he'd get back into the game of overseeing his craft.

    Yeah, definitely "twee"...

    by pessimusgrime

...leave it to the Brits for a descriptive term that sums everything up nicely. Though I liked Dead Like Me and Heroes was great until Fuller left. Yeah his "come back" was a bust, but I don't think anyone could've saved that show by that point. Never saw Wonderfalls, but Pushing Daisies was "twee" on steroids... uh, well twee on estrogen, actually. I could never get through more than 20 minutes of that show without feeling like I had just poured 20 packets of Equal in my morning coffee... way too much saccharine. I know a lot of people liked it, but it just suffered from too much of a case of the terminal cutes for my tastes.

I can see why you might confuse them because they’re both successful Hollywood fortysomething sci-fi homosexuals. Would you have made the same comparison had they been black, handicapped, or jewish. I highly doubt it. And also, why does it matter if they are gay or str8, has nothing to do with the article. You have all kinds of readers on here, keep that in mind.

    by scrivener

And probably wouldn't make it through half a season, since it sounds a little too Bryan Fuller-esque (which is a great thing... provided you're not one of the short-sighted, narrow-minded studio fuckbags who canceled Dead, Wonderfalls, or Daisies). Sellevision sounds like it could be hilarious, too - but... yeah, same story - studio fuckbags, yada yada.
